Thank you to past Presidents Tracy Wong (member firm Insurance Solutions, LLC), Susan Tanigawa (member firm C.S. Letter from the President

Happy Holidays EWI of Honolulu! We are officially into the holiday season with Thanksgiving upon us and the Christmas and New Year’s holidays right around the corner. This is truly a time to gather with family, express your gratitude, and to celebrate.

We celebrated last month on November 12th at the KCC – Ka’ikena Dining Room for EWI of Honolulu’s 47th anniversary. Chartered in 1967, EWI of Honolulu became the 54th chapter in EWI. We heard from 12 past Presidents about their personal experiences in EWI. And, we had the privilege to reconnect with four past Presidents who have moved on to other careers or have

stepped aside to allow for others within their company to experience EWI. Thank you to past Presidents Tracy Wong (member firm Insurance Solutions, LLC), Susan Tanigawa (member firm C.S. Wo & Sons), Valerie Tanaka (member firm Outrigger Enterprises Inc.), and Gwen Fujie (former member firm, The Queen’s Medical Center) for joining us in November. We truly appreciate their continued support, words of wisdom, and fellowship.

A special “thank you” goes to Doreen Tavares, Past President-Year 2000, of member firm Pacific Business News. Although Doreen could not join us that evening, she sent in a monetary donation to be used toward the ASIST Scholarship Program. Thank you, Doreen for your continued support of EWI!

Your professional development is a key component of the mission and vision of EWI. Please take advantage of these opportunities to network with other representatives and guests at our monthly dinner meetings, participate in your committee assignments, and take advantage of the monthly webinars offered by EWI Corporate. All webinars are no cost to members and also open to any employee within a member firm. Log on in December to hear Sylvia Helper, President of Launching Lives, LLC speak to Employee Engagement. You will learn how to engage and inspire your employees in order to obtain higher levels of success for your company.

Francine Lee-Kadota of member firm, Meridian Properties, and Wendy Kia, of member firm Marie Louise Fine Garment Cleaners, past and current Philanthropy Directors, conducted a fun and engaging reading rally for the children of Family Programs of Hawaii. The children were excited as they participated in book readings, received balloon animals from Vernon Nakamura of member firm First Hawaiian Bank, and played games to win Halloween themed prizes. Each month I’ll remind you of our word for the year – excite. December 2014

Sergeant-at-Arms – Karen Choe • There were 35 representatives and six no shows at the October 8, 2014 membership meeting held at Hilton

Waikiki Beach Hotel.

Ways and Means – Karen Garcia • Festival of Giving tickets were distributed and deadline to submit monies is

October 31, 2014. • The committee suggested a possible option to have an earlier shotgun time

of 11:00 am or 11:30 am for next year’s golf tournament. There was brief discussion that it may be difficult for golfers to get there by that time and keeping a 12 pm shotgun might be best.

Unfinished Business:

• The Board agreed to maintain their decision that future individual memberships will not be allowed. This recommendation will be presented for membership’s approval at the next Business Meeting on November 12, 2014.

New Business:

• Wanda Sanchez, 2013-2014 Ways and Means Committee Chair, presented the final Ways and Means Committee report for the 2014 Golf Tournament. Total net profit of $42,439.79 was our best ever.

• A recommendation by the Ways and Means Committee to put 85% ($36,073.82) towards the BCDP account, $15,000 towards EWISP and $15,000 to ASIST was approved. This 85% would be an additional $19,420.82.

• The 2014-2015 proposed budget was approved for presentation to membership for approval.

Next Meetings:

• The next membership meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 12, 2014, 5:30 p.m. at KCC’s Ka Ikena Restaurant.

with the foster kids of Family Programs Hawaii!

On Thursday, October 23rd the Philanthropy Committee held our annual “Reading Rally” at the Oahu Veterans Center. Wendy Kia,

along with her committee members and other AMAZING EWI of Honolulu Volunteers entertained 20 children, ages 3-17, from the Foster Children Program. They came dressed in Halloween costumes, played games, read books and had a great time impacting the lives of these

keiki. We’d like to say a BIG mahalo to all who donated books and small toys for this event. We appreciate you all and thank you for

helping us in our philanthropic efforts!!
