Christina Clark and Anne Teravainen, writing for the National Literacy Trust, conceptualise reading in three domains:

1. Cognitive Processes: proficiency to use technical skills; & has good comprehension skills

2. Behaviours: reads widely; reads frequently; discusses reading; & uses self-regulatory strategies

3. Affective Processes: enjoys reading; is motivated to read; thinks positively about reading; is a confident reader; identifies as a reader; & relates to texts

The explicit teaching of the Cognitive Processes for reading is a core responsibility of any school. Relevant skills and strategies for reading that are taught include phonemic awareness, letter-sound relationships, word parts and whole words, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. At Ashfield Public School, explicit teaching of reading includes the Learning and Literacy (L3) intervention program for the early years and Guided Reading for Years 2 -6.

Developing appropriate Behaviours for reading at Ashfield Public School involves the Accelerated

Reader Program. This program is about students reading more frequently and developing the ability to monitor their reading practice. It is about setting targets to encourage sustained and regular reading and enabling teachers and parents to engage in focused conversations with students about what they are reading.

Developing the Affective Processes for reading is an area for improvement, with research showing this area to be an often undervalued and overlooked part of the curriculum. Therefore, as part of our ongoing school improvement we quite appropriately and importantly ask how our school community, both parents and teachers alike, are developing in our children the Affective Processes for reading - how do we instil in them a love and joy for reading.

Educational research shows that reading aloud to children positively impacts on the Affective Processes for reading. One particular report identified that reading aloud is the single most important activity for building the knowledge required for eventual success in reading. Other research shows that reading aloud to children increases their learning engagement, motivation and enjoyment of reading.

Inspired by this research, Ashfield Public School has introduced Out Loud, a home & school initiative to promote and sustain reading aloud to children. This initiative involves teachers and parents reading aloud to children every day in an engaging manner that promotes emerging literacy and language development.

If our students enjoy reading, their reading skills will improve. Out Loud is Ashfield Public School’s commitment to adults modelling positive reading practices to children, to making reading a shared time of relaxation where children enjoy and value reading and are develop as motivated and avid readers.

Once again Kindergarten have been busy bees learning about reading, writing, numbers and of course mini-beasts! We have been so impressed by the caliber of information reports this term and have been practicing our public speaking skills ready for the competition. Thank you to parents and caregivers for supporting your child to gather all the information and the time you have spent practicing at home. It has been fantastic to listen and learn from each other, let’s keep up the good work! We have also made some gorgeous mini beast artworks and teachers are very proud of the results.

In the last few weeks teachers have been busy writing Kindergarten’s first ever reports and we feel so proud of the effort children are putting into their learning and wellbeing. We have a lovely and diverse cohort and we are making some terrific achievements, well done Kindergarten!

Another win for Kindergarten are the results from the Walkathon with KK being the class who raised the most money for our school. Congratulations KK, what a great achievement! KK hosted a fantastic pizza party as a thank you for their effort and what fun everyone had. Thank you to everyone who sent in Walkathon money, it is greatly appreciated.

Last week we had the Bake Sale, yet another successful fundraiser where we raised over $500. It was such a treat for children to choose from the wonderful array of cakes, biscuits and sweets, reports were that everything tasted delicious! Thank you to the Kindergarten parents and caregivers who made sweet contributions of baked goods, your support is very much appreciated.

Can you believe we’re already half way through the term? These past few weeks has been very eventful!

Stage 1 classes participated in a local walk around Ashfield Public School to get ready for Walk Safety to School Day. We learnt how to stop, look, listen and think before crossing roads and walking along foot paths. It was so much fun walking to school with our teachers and friends. Thank you also to all the parents who came to help!

Our Athletics program is always a highlight each week. We have been learning skills such as running, throwing and skipping. We will soon be ready and in shape for our Athletics carnival in Term 3.

Throughout the weeks we’ve heard and seen some amazing minibeast presentations. There are some very talented speakers in Stage 1. It has been so interesting to learn about each other’s minibeasts in anticipation for our Taronga Zoo excursion in Week 7.

Hello from Stage 2,

We have been busily working our way through the term and have been enjoying many exciting things that are happening in our classrooms and school.

In our Science Unit, Stage 2 have been enjoying moon gazing. We have been exploring the different phases of the moon and learning the technical vocabulary, looking at daylight hours and the effect winter has on the daylight hours and how daylight causes our shadows to change and why. We are very keen to observe the changes throughout the term and look forward to making many more discoveries!

We are also enjoying a brand new kind of homework, this sees homework now done on a weekly basis and encourages all students to participate. The response from the students has been very positive and allows them to consolidate learning at home while also challenging themselves. Stage 2 teachers are very proud of the effort being put into homework each week, well done to all.

For art we are looking at the artist Piet Mondrian and studying his work called “Broadway Boogie Woogie”. The students are enjoying the concept of creating such a fascinating artwork.

Stage 2 teachers and students are continuing to work hard throughout the term.

State Library Excursion

Stage 3 students visited the State Library of NSW in Weeks 3 and 4. We participated in the ‘Striking Gold’ program, related to our history unit ‘Australian Colonies’. Students took turns at dressing in period costume to create a short film set in the Gold Rush era. We travelled to the city by train and got to spend some time learning in the sunshine at Hyde Park. Students were required to be responsible, respectful, and safe to make this excursion a success, and Stage 3 made their teachers proud!

Zone Cross Country

Representatives from Stage 3 along with Stage 2 attended the Zone Cross Country in week 4. All representatives had a successful day competing in their age race against students from other schools. All students displayed exceptional sportsmanship and respect towards others involved, which made the Zone Cross Country a wonderful day out. Well done Ashfield representatives!

Debating

Our Stage 3 debating teams are participating in the Premier’s Debating Challenge and the Sydney Region Debating Competition this term. The Sydney Region competition team have already completed rounds 1 and 2 of their competition, and are continuing to pursue their first win for the year. The Premier’s Challenge has seen Ashfield teams debating Canterbury Public School and Canterbury South Public School in round 1. We wish good luck to our debaters in the next rounds!

We have many exciting music events coming up. Our recorder group are busily preparing for the Instrumental Festival of Music. They will perform in the Jacaranda Concert at the Opera House on Sunday 17th June at 7pm. Our senior choir are sounding fabulous and will perform in the Open Choir Eisteddfod at the Concourse Concert Hall, Chatswood on Monday 18th June. This will be good practise for the Cantabile Festival next term.

How do children become fluent in Addition and Subtraction facts?Children need to be explicitly taught the mental strategies and recording strategies for addition and subtraction. Here is a range of strategies:

• counting on from the larger number to find the total of two numbers example 5 + 7: 7 + 1 + 1 +1 + 1 + 1 = 12

• counting back from a number to find the number remaining example 16 - 4: 16 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 = 8

• counting on to find the difference between two numbers example 11 - 4: 4 + 1 + 1 +1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 (7)

• using doubles and near doubles example 5 + 7: double 5 and add 2 more

• combining numbers that add to 10 example 4 + 7 + 8 + 6 + 3: (4 + 6) (7 +3) + 8 = 28

• bridging to ten example 17 + 5: 17 +3 = 20 (+ 2) = 22

• the jump strategy example 23 + 35: 23 + 30 + 5 = 58

• the split strategy example 23 + 35: 20 + 30 + 3 + 5 is 58

• the compensation strategy example 63 + 29: 63 + 30 is 93, subtract 1 to obtain 92

• using patterns to extend number facts example 5 – 2 = 3: so 500 – 200 is 300

• bridging the decades example 34 + 17: 34 + 10 is 44, 44 + 7 = 51

• changing the order of addends to form multiples of 10 example 16 + 8 + 4: add 16 and 4 first

If children are not fluent in these facts, then when they are solving more complex problems, their working memory is taken up by calculating basic addition and subtraction facts, and children have less working memory to focus on solving the actual problem. So fluency in basic facts allows children to tackle more complex maths more effectively

Book of the Week

When You Reach Me

By Rebecca Stead

Miranda is just your ordinary, typical 6th grade girl. She enjoys things that most 6th grades girl do and she talks about things that most 6th grade girls do. Miranda and her best friend Sal know every path through their neighbourhood. They also know who to avoid, like the crazy guy on the corner.

One day, things change. Sal is punched in the mouth, and he shuts her out of his life. Then her

mum’s hidden emergency apartment key is stolen. She then finds a message.

I am coming to save your friends life and my own. I must ask two favours. First you must write me a letter.

The person sending the message appears to know all about her, and he seems to know things before they happen. More messages come, seeming to defy time and space. Each message brings her closer to believing that she can save someone’s life, until the last note makes her think that she’s too late.

The Newberry medal award winning book, When You Reach Me is a thought provoking book for people from about 9 years and above.

SRC Executive ReportLast week we had the Bake Sale. It was very successful. We hope you all had a wonderful time. Thanks to all those that bought something from the Bake Sale. And a special thanks to the people that donated to the stall, and the teachers that helped us organise the great day. We are ecstatic with the amount that we made. We will be saving the money so that we can buy some special things for you and help your experiences at school.

Also, recently we had the Zone Cross-country. Well done to all those that represented our school. A special mention to Chloe, Tonya, Thomas and Zeyad, who all came in the top 20.

We look forward to announcing our next fundraiser that will be occurring later this term, or early Term 3.

Hope you have all had a great few weeks!

From the SRC Executive team.

Library NewsOur Book Fair this year was hosted by Better read Than Dead Bookshop at Newtown. It was held in the Library. In the past, we have used the hall. Thank you to all the students and parents who supported the fair.

Unfortunately we did not make very much money to supplement our book collection. If you wish to make a donation to the Library, either with pre-loved books or money, it would be gratefully received. Last week we had our first Book Club held on Thursday at Break 2. Year 5 students

loved sharing novels with one of our parents, Rachel, who has extensive experience in Children’s Literature. Year 6 have the opportunity to come this Thursday and enjoy reading and popcorn too!

I would like to thank Michelle, a parent of Mila Class of 2017, who is assisting with Library administrative tasks. The Library is a very busy place and we appreciate Michelle’s assistance.

Visit at lunch times if you are in Years 3-6 or pop in after school for a chat.

What is recycling?

Recycling is the process of converting waste materials into new materials and objects. It is an alternative to “conventional” waste disposal that can save material and help lower greenhouse gas emissions.

Green Team - Foxgloves (Digitalis)This plant has a very nice purple colour to it, however, this plant mostly likes shade. Unlike most plants it grows faster in shade. The plant has more evil names like Dead Man’s bells and Witch’s Gloves. We find this interesting since it grows in shade rather in the sun.

Technology ReportHyperVSN RGB Fans

Now you might be wondering why we are doing a tech report on fans with RGB lights on them, but these fans are special. They have a lot of small LEDs on them, so they are capable of displaying images in the air that look like they are 3D and floating. This is useful for advertising or showing a product for a company which would look very modern. For example, the company Apple could use this fan to showcase an iPhone outside of one of their Apple stores. This would make the store or advertisement look visually appealing and modern. This product can also be a computer screen which can be surprisingly high resolution and clear with 3D capabilities. A downside with buying a RGB Fan screen is that it would cost an incredible amount.

At a price of A$1330, would someone like you get it? I would expect probably not because it doesn’t benefit you but owning one would be cool. Wouldn’t you agree?

Volunteer of the Year Award

On Wednesday 23rd May Mrs Peshos accompanied an Ashfield Public School volunteer, Reverend John Hawkins to the Inner West Council’s Volunteer of the Year Awards. Mr Hawkins has worked in Mrs Peshos’s class over the last few years, for one hour each week, to support learning including listening to students read. Congratulations Mr Hawkins – volunteers are a valuable and must appreciated aspect of life here at Ashfield Public School.

One day there were three aliens, they came to earth to learn English, the first one made friends with some self-obsessed people, so all he learnt was: Me! Me! Me! The second one went to some dinner parties with greedy people, so all she learnt was: Knives and Forks! Knives and Forks! The third one joined a choir but could only sing: Hallelujah! Hallelujah! __________________________________

Later that month, they all went on a walk together past the prison, when they came across a hole in one of the cells. A policewoman had been called to the scene and saw them there, so she asked them “Who did this?” And alien 1 replied “Me! Me! Me!” So she asked the second alien “How did he do it?” And she replied “Knives and Forks! Knives and Forks!” And finally, the policewoman said to the third alien, “You’re clearly all accomplices, so you’re all going to jail.” To which he replied “Hallelujah! Hallelujah!”

Advice with Expressive Eli and Patient PrekshaI’m having trouble on making friends because my friends are excluding me. I am trying to make new friends and, it is not working that well. Every day they want my help and, I say ‘yes’ . I do this because, I think my relationship with them would get better. Though I am wrong every single day. I do hope that my connection with them does get better day by day as I help them with their classwork.

From No Friend Person. Dear No Friend Person,

We believe there is a solution to this problem that you have. Firstly, tell the friends that you do not like them much, since they are not treating people properly. Secondly, wait a little while. See if this happens again. If it does, well then tell the teacher. Thirdly, wait again a little while and see if the situation changes.

From Expressive Eli and Patient Preksha.

P&C Funding Priorities

At the last P&C meeting on Monday 21 May we agreed our support plans for the school to fund the following priorities:

• Construction of a slab and new shed (approx. $3,000)

• Shade cloth replacement for the Wangal (approx. $25,000)

• Laptops ($10,000)

• Sing Music Program materials ($1600)

• iPads

• PA system upgrade ($10,000)

• Courtyard shade structure, picnic tables and play equipment ($20,000)

• Financial support for all students to attend the Year 5 and 6 camp ($5,000) (supplementing fundraising efforts by the kids)

• Interactive Whiteboards for the Demountables ($8,200)

• Books ($2000)

By agreement, $5000 was released at the meeting to fund half the requested laptops for the school. At the moment the school has a very limited number of laptops. By increasing the laptops available more classes at a time will be able to use laptops in class.

We also released $1600 to fund the Sing music program. This will provide important music education materials for the whole school.

The P&C is holding fundraising events throughout the year to help raise money for the remainder of the list of priorities. We are also looking into various grants and business support requests to help achieve some of this. Grant applications are currently underway by the P&C for the PA system upgrade and there are a few more being considered.

If you have any suggestions or can support the school to achieve any of these priorities please get in touch with Sarah Vickers P&C President on 0477764765 or [email protected].
