Building Belonging in the Curriculum (2011) puts forward the importance of an inclusive curriculum whereby all students access the same learning experiences, regardless of their ability.

In any student cohort it is typical to have a very wide and diverse range of abilities. As a result individuals have different levels of success and interest across the key learning areas of the curriculum. For example, a student with an aptitude for mathematics might find the skill of a team sport challenging, while a student who is frustrated by visual arts might have a talent and passion for writing.

Regardless of an individual’s particular ability, engaging all students through quality teaching and an effective, inclusive curriculum is not only essential but actually mandated by law. Under the Disability Standards for Education 2005 all students must access and participate in education on the same basis as other students.

Engaging the diversity of abilities is also a requirement of the Australia Professional

Standard for Teachers. To maintain accreditation teachers must differentiate teaching to meet the specific learning needs of students across the full range of abilities.

Therefore all schools must deliver an inclusive and effective curriculum that makes the necessary allowances to enable all students of all abilities to successfully participate alongside their peers and show growth in any particular learning situation.

The notion of universal design for learning underlies delivering a curriculum that is inclusive of all abilities. This is where a teacher sets a learning intention, reflects on the barriers that might apply to individual students and then designs ways to maximise accessibility. This includes the way information is delivered, the way students will participate in the lesson including demonstrating what has been learned.

Also important in an inclusive curriculum is to focus learning for the group on a core concept as the fundamental area of knowledge with the idea of differentiating to challenge students at their individual level. A good way to perceive this is a swimming lesson with the learning intention, for example, of developing an appropriate breathing technique. All children, regardless of ability, are expected to be in the water with some students in the deep end, some standing in the shallow end, and some with an adult by their side. For some students the differentiation might be correct breath technique for competitive racing, for others it might be how to hold breath under water.

Universal design is the art of quality and differentiated teaching that allows a child to access a lesson and develop skills, knowledge and understanding of their class. At Ashfield Public School we continue to be committed to the implementation of an inclusive curriculum that is adjusted to engage diversity and enable the full participation of all students, whatever their ability.

Thank you for a wonderful year Kindergarten. The teachers have enjoyed every day at school because of your enthusiasm, willingness to try new things and zest for learning. Every child has made progress in all Key Learning Areas. We are thrilled with the outstanding Reading and Writing results. It feels like only yesterday that we had children feeling unsure about a new reader or a blank page in their writing book. Now we have 60 confident Readers and Writers! Congratulations on your hard work and love of challenges.

Week 8 was all about SWIMMING! We had a great week at Ashfield Pool. All of the children participated in the program and loved every minute of their time in the water. We are so proud of the children who had never been in the pool and were understandably nervous and a little scared. They gave it their best shot and were successful in learning lots of water safety skills along with some swimming. The students who could already swim had the opportunity to refine their skills and it was great to see them zipping up and down the pool.

Thank you to our delightful parents and grandparents. We couldn’t have done it without your support and smiling faces every afternoon under the tree. We wish you all a happy holiday and look forward to hearing all about your adventures next year. Merry Christmas!

Swimming week is such a fun time for Stage 1. Swimming skills, water safety and building confidence in and near the water is so important to keep kids safe – don’t let our precious children become a statistic over the Summer holidays. They need all the skills they have been learning this week and they also need you to always keep an eye on them when they are near water.

Everyone has now received their child’s report now and we hope they sound like your child. Teachers have spent many hours preparing these for you. A good idea is to put them somewhere safe so you can keep a record of your child throughout their school years. Remember, there is always time for a parent/teacher interview if you wish to make an appointment to discuss your child’s report.

We hope you all enjoyed the fairy tale unit of work as much as we did. The students are always fascinated by these stories that tell us so much about history, writing, illustrating and just the enjoyment of reading.

Thoughts about holidays are also on the agenda but we still have lots to learn about: road safety, personal safety, celebrations and persuasive writing.

Keep a look out for the coming events because there is a lot happening at this time of year.

Year 4 had an amazing time meeting our new OC students showing them how fabulous and friendly Ashfield PS is. There were lots of quick hands on activities which were really engaging and required lots of team work. Among our favourite activities were the spaghetti and marshmallow towers and floating boat

End of the term is approaching soon! 3/4K and 3/4P have been actively involved in all subject areas. Our maths focus was multiplication and chance. We have worked on activities such as a ‘Pokemon Multiplication Go’ and creating ‘Chance Dice’ which is interest based and interactive. Most importantly, students were highly focused on their learning while having fun, too. Students enjoyed working cooperatively in pairs and teams.

In addition, 3/4K and 3/4P have been working hard on creating puppets for our Drama unit. The students have creatively written their own scripts and look forward to performing their puppet shows in front of their peers. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank Mirabel’s parents for providing the resource to create our wonderful puppet theatre.

Year 5Last week Year 5 students attended the Berry Sport and Recreation Camp. We all had such an enjoyable time participating in various activities and building stronger friendships amongst us all. Our camp instructors taught us some valuable lessons around the importance of teamwork, collaboration and facing our fears. Some activities we participated in were the Giant Swing, Rafting, Archery and the Photo Challenge. Our time away went really fast but we are so thankful to our parents and our teachers for letting us experience such a great camp.

Year 6As the end of term and year quickly approaches us, Year 6 are preparing to finish the last two weeks of primary school. It is an extremely emotional time for us all however we are definitely ready for the next chapter in our lives. As we reminisce on this last year we recently shared some many amazing highlights with each other and for some even tears with one another. From diving into the frightfulness of becoming the school leaders, to collaborating to sell business ideas during our studies on Indonesia, to successfully completing the best mannequin challenge yet at Ashfield Public School, to our continual efforts with running the school newsletter and fundraising initiatives and to making new friends from other primary schools during our week long transition program at Canterbury Boys. This year has definitely been a rollercoaster of ups and downs for us,

however through it all we have stuck together to support one another. For those of us whom end a 7 year chapter and for the rest of us whom end a shorter chapter, we would all like to say thank you. Firstly we would like to thank the teachers at Ashfield, you have all help shape the students that we are today. Secondly to Mr Moran, thank you for your support and for your interesting lessons in life that you taught us. Your wisdom, knowledge and care for us is something we will never forget. Finally a immense thank you to our parents for believing in us, for supporting our education and for always being there for us. Ashfield we will miss you!

venture into the next chapter of your own lives we both want you all to remind yourselves of the values we have so frequently discussed in class and to remember you all that life is a journey, just so you know. It is up to you to decide where your life will go. Up a mountain or down a hill, people will always go where they will. Spend your time with loved ones and friends just as long as your’re happy, that is all that we recommend.

At the simplest level, skilled reading requires word recognition and comprehension. A deficit in either aspect will result in poor reading ability. If a child can read words aloud correctly but does not know what they mean, the child will not understand and therefore is not really reading. Conversely, a child can have a large vocabulary and good listening comprehension but these will not be of use if they cannot decipher the words on the page.

Explicit instruction in phonics is the most effective way to teach children to read words accurately; by teaching them to decode words. When children know how to decode, they will be able to read almost any word they encounter.

Phonics instruction is one of the most researched aspects of education, in terms of both the volume of research over the past few decades and the consistency of the evidence. Numerous reviews of scientific studies of reading (excerpted below) have recommended that early reading instruction should have a well-developed systematic and explicit phonics component.

In all stages we have been enjoying playing recorder and I have been impressed with how many students have shown an ability to play. It was very fortunate that our P & C has been so helpful towards funding for new instruments. As a result we not only acquired new drums, but the new treble recorders will assist with the school’s endeavour to start a new Senior Recorder Group next year. Due to student interest we have already registered to participate in the Festival of Instrumental Music for 2017 at the Sydney Opera House.

Last week the Senior Choir members recorded video audition submissions for next year’s Primary Proms and Choral Festival events. We will find out early in term 1 next year regarding our success. Thank you to KT for taking the time to do the recordings.

At the same time we recorded the choirs for the purpose of producing a CD that parents can purchase for the benefit the school. We will schedule more recording sessions to include some of the seniors that were unable to attend and the Junior Choir as well. Thank you to Lachlan for giving us this opportunity. I can’t wait to hear the finished product.

As a school we are learning carols that will be performed at the Talent Quest on the last day of school, Friday December 16th. It’s been a fantastic year at Ashfield Public School. I look forward to seeing everyone again next year!

Elvis Presley

Elvis Aaron Presley, born in January 8, 1935, was an American singer and actor and was regarded as one of the most significant cultural icons of the 20th century. He is often referred to as “the King of Rock and Roll” because of his taste of Rock and Roll. He made over 25 songs and

starred in over 25 movies. Because of his popularity, he also became visible in a lot of games and movies; therefore he was referred to the name “the King”.

Elvis and his parents moved to Memphis, Tennessee, in 1948 and then he graduated from Humes High School there in 1953. Elvis’s musical influences were the pop and country music of the time, the music he listened to was very addicting and then decided when he was older, “should I be a rock star?” And so he did exactly that. He later became a millionaire and had a whopping net worth of 6 million dollars (meaning how much his life was) and got married to a woman named Priscilla. Elvis Presley was famous for his handsomeness and fantastic music at the time, but everyone got really disappointed when he died from overdose of drugs at the age of 42! And here are some facts about him!

In and Around the Library

The Library has been a very busy and dynamic venue at our school this year. Through weekly Library/ RFF lessons, students have the opportunity to read, explore, create and research using books and PCs, laptops, iPads and personal devices. The Robotics and Green Screen after school program extended the use of the Library facilities and gave students access to equipment to extend Visual Literacy.

Our many other Library activities this year included the Book Fair, Book Week Parade, author talks, visits to Ashfield Library, participating in the National Simultaneous Story time, Premiers Reading Challenge and hosting many school and library meetings. The weekly homework club increased to over 60 Ashfield students being assisted by 10 tutors from Western Sydney University every Thursday afternoon. This was a great opportunity for students to gain individual attention and help with their homework. Thank you to Mr Moran for his continual support of the program and Ashfield teachers who assisted too.

Holidays are an excellent time to take the opportunity to read and explore. If you don’t

already belong to your local library, now is a good time to join. There are many beautiful libraries to visit in our city including the State Library and some very unusual libraries….

If you want children to want to read then read amazing books aloud every single day.

Vivah Panchami is a festival celebrating the wedding of Rama and Sita. It is observed on the fifth day of the Shukla paksha or waxing

phase of moon in the Margashirsha month (November – December) as per Nepali calendar. The day is observed as the Vivah Utsav of Sita and Rama in temples and sacred places associated with Sri Rama in Mithila region of Nepal.

This week I decided to draw a girl with purple and blue hair with a flower crown. I love the fact that she’s turning around to face towards you and how some of the hair is overlapping one of her eyes. I also enjoyed doing the shading of the purple and blue in the hair and blending them together. The flowers were a bit difficult at first but after I drew the first one I got used to drawing it. I’m very proud of this artwork.

I decided to draw Flame Prince this time. He’s the gender bent version of Flame Princess from Adventure Time. In his series everyone has been gender swapped. For example: Finn and Jake are Now Fiona and cake, Marceline is now Marshal Lee, etc. I decided to draw flame prince because he’s my favourite character from the gender swapped series. His overall design is really cool and I especially love his flame Mohawk. His outfit is also really cool; I love his cape, baggy pants, boots and all the other aspects of his outfit. Again I can confirm he is definitely my favourite character from the gender swapped Adventure Time series.

Volunteer Ethics Coordinator Ashfield Public School

Dear Parents and Carers,

Ethics classes have been available at Ashfield Public School for a few years as an option for children who don’t attend Special Religious Educations (SRE/scripture).

The NSW government has authorised Primary Ethics, a not for profit organization, to create curriculum and recruit and train volunteers to teach these classes. In Ethics classes, children consider ethical decisions that affect them, their friends and family and learn how to think logically, disagree respectfully and support their arguments with evidence.

We need a new volunteer ethics coordinator to help organise classes.

The volunteer ethics coordinator is an administrative role coordinating the ethics teachers and liaising between the school and Primary Ethics. It requires a commitment of up to two hours per week. The time is flexible and the work is predominantly online. Training for the ethics coordinator is provided online.

WE NEED YouR HELPk-2 Hindu Special Religious Educator required at our school.

Dear Parents/Caregivers

Our highly committed K-2 Hindu teacher has moved out of the area and is no longer available to instruct Hindu lessons at our school. I am seeking a Volunteer who can commit to instructing approximately 26 Kindergarten to Year 2 students under the supervision of a classroom Teacher. As a Volunteer you would be required to instruct the students each Wednesday, of the school term, from 2:05-2:40pm. Volunteers also need to be registered with a recognised organisation.

The Department of Education recognises the following organisations: Chinmaya Mission Australia (Castle Hill)The Saiva Manram (Mays Hill)Vishva Hindu Parishad of Australia (kellyville).
