Dear Sir,
We are Year Five from Kent Park Primary School and we have been learning about Sustainability.
We have started running a Nude Food Day and are encouraging everyone to bring their food in containers instead of
wrappers. We are trying to reduce the amount of rubbish we produce in our school.
We are running a competition to encourage everyone to participate. Each Nude Food day the classes are asked to count
their wrappers and the class with the least amount of wrappers for the day are given tickets for each child to go into a
raffle draw. At the end of each month we will draw the raffle and give containers as prizes.
We hope that you may be able to assist us with the donation of lunch boxes, small containers or drink bottles for prizes.
Thank you for your support,
Chloe Martin, Caitlin Quinn and Heetal Varsani
Year Five
Kent Park Primary School
Inquiry Letter for Year 5 Sustainability
To Mrs. Macaulay, Mrs. A’Vard and School Council,
Grade 5 is learning about Sustainability. Our sustainable action is to build a chicken coop for Kent Park for students to
enjoy.
The sustainable feature is that we can collect our own free range eggs and sell some in a raffle; we can also cook them at
the canteen.
The chicken can eat food scraps from the class room compost bin. This means that there will be less rubbish in the yard
and in the class room.
The chicken will help other students get interested in Sustainability, learn about the environment and become more
sustainable people. The students will also learn to care for animals and be responsible for feeding and locking them up at
night.
Grade five plans on doing some fund raising to cover most of the cost but we would like School Council to contribute
towards the cost of the coop, food, chickens and the fencing.
We would like to invite you to a presentation on Thursday 15th of August at 9:30am in Room 21. We are sure that that
after the presentation that you will be as excited as we are about getting a chicken coop.
We are looking forward to seeing you at the presentation.
From Connor Payne 5A
on behalf of Grade 5

Year 5 WRITERS OF THE WEEK
CERES On Friday the 24
th of May the year 5 students and teachers went CERES in East Brunswick. We travelled in 2 buses. We
went To CERES because grade 5 students are learning about Sustainability. CERES is an Environmental Park for the
community; it shows you all the different things to help the environment.
For instance we looked at a Solar Powered car. Solar Powered cars are great because Co2 doesn’t come out of the car. We
went to Ian’s car and he brought a big bag. Ian told Ty to put the bag over the exhaust pipe and Ian turned on the car. The
bag started to get bigger, because all the Co2 was going into the bag. We timed how long it would take to fill one bag, it
took 31 seconds. That gave us a rough idea how much Co2 enters the atmosphere from every car on the road.
We talked about E waste with Ellie, we sat in a circle and she was explained what E waste is. She told us to grab out a
battery and she told us to see where it was made, mine was made in China. Most of the batteries were made in China and
Japan; there were only about 3 or 4 in Indonesia and U.S.A. When we watched a video that was a bit sad because people
were pulling apart TV’S that can kill you and these people were doing it with their bare hands.
