StStudents are individuals who learn at different rates and in different ways. These differences influence how they respond to instruction and how they demonstrate what they know, understand and can do. Individual differences may include:

• cognitive abilities, including students’ current level of understanding and ability in relation to a particular topic or skill

• prior learning experiences

• learning styles and preferences

• motivation and engagement with learning

• interests and talents

While it is the job of the classroom teacher to prepare and teach lessons that are differentiated to the ability of the individual, catering for the learning needs of each student also takes a coordinated whole school approach.

To support teachers as they cater for the diversity of student learning needs, a school typically forms a Learning Support Team. At Ashfield Public School this team includes the principal, school counsellor, assistant principals and teachers.

The Learning Support Team meets weekly to make decisions about the use of school resources, including staff time, expertise, funds, facilities and materials, so that they are applied in a targeted manner to meet the learning and wellbeing needs of all students.

At a school level, it might be the decision to purchase a whole school reading program such as Accelerated Reader, or provide training for teachers to learn how to conduct a Best Start Kindergarten Assessment. At a particular year level it might the decision to use school based funding to employ a part time teacher to run numeracy groups or teach a cyber-safety program. At an individual level it might be the decision to enrol a particular student in a Triple E (engagement, enrichment, extension) initiative or create for an individualised education program.

The Learning Support Team is also responsible for coordinating a whole school assessment schedule. This is about collecting educational data to understand what’s working, and what areas may need improvement. It gives the school, teachers and parents the information required to make informed, evidenced-based decisions that will help all students make measureable progress.

Classroom teachers attend the weekly Learning Support Team meeting, at point of need, to discuss the student assessment data that has been collected in class, barriers to the learning of individual students, and ways to engage identified students so as to improve their performance.

Understanding how students learn, and providing an appropriate level of challenge for each individual is a sophisticated job. It requires that all teachers know every child in their class and how they learn so as to create and deliver quality, differentiated programs. An effective Learning Support Team is close at hand to coordinate the resources that enable teachers to improve student learning outcomes.

We have had yet another action packed few weeks in Kindergarten. The Bring and Buy Sale was a huge hit with us all. There were some very enthusiastic parents and grandparents, supporting their children and grandchildren in their quest to become successful entrepreneurs.

Students thoroughly enjoyed the swimming program and have learnt many new water skills!

Teachers are pleased to report on a very smooth transition week and heard some great feedback about the experience of being in Year One. On the whole Kindergarten are excited and ready!

It’s amazing to look back and think about all our achievements and how we have grown. For most of us we have learnt to read and write and so much more. Children have formed some lovely friendships and teachers have just loved getting to know every student. It’s been a fantastic year!

As we wrap up the year we have also been singing up a storm ready for our end of year Assembly. We wish everyone a Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year, a fantastic holiday and a good rest!

2019 nears to an end with excitement and anticipation for what’s ahead in the holidays and 2020 for our Stage One students and School Community, especially teachers. We spend time reflecting on our progress, events, achievements and successes. As teachers and parents we can see how well all the students have done and how far they have come in their literacy and numeracy skills. It has been an amazing year of learning for Year One and Year Two.

Year One had a fantastic time at swimming. We really enjoyed watching the progress and confidence that students made over the week. We hope all students continue to develop their swimming skills over the course of the Summer holidays.

Over the course of Week Eight, Stage One had their library visit at Ashfield Public Library. We highly recommend spending some time there. It is such a great space for all to enjoy while they are on holidays, read and borrow from there.

We have been very busy preparing for the Christmas Concert happening on Tuesday the 17th of December at 9am in the Hall. Please encourage your children to wear Christmas attire that they will need for their performance. Come and join us as we sing up a storm for you. The following the day we will be having Ashfield’s Got Talent at 10:30am in the Hall.

It has been a productive year for all our students. It is hard to believe how much progress they have made in all areas. The confidence and skills in all Key Learning Areas displayed by the students are always making us proud. We have appreciated your support throughout the year, from reading with your children, preparing costumes for events, science experiments and homework. The support for your child is evident in their learning. Ashfield Public School students always astonish us.

What great opportunities will 2020 bring to our school?

Stage 2Stage PageIt is Week 9 of Term 4 - hasn’t it arrived quickly! Our past few weeks have been very busy with exciting learning experiences happening in every class.

Week 8 was our last week of the Gymnastics program. It has been a great 8 weeks of fun and active learning for all Stage 2 students. Stage 2 students have gained so many health benefits of Gymnastics.

The students also had the opportunity to visit Ashfield Library for reading and borrowing books. They thoroughly enjoyed discovering the library by browsing books, learning new vocabulary and making connections between texts and their own experiences.

We are looking forward to the Whole School Picnic and the Talent Quest in Week 10. Many of our Stage 2 students are performing in the Talent Quest to unleash their talents in drama, dancing, comedy and many more! Parents and families are welcome to join us.

Lastly Stage 2 teachers would like to say congratulations to all the students and how wonderful it has been teaching your child. We wish you a very Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and a safe and fun holiday.

Differentiated Teaching Differentiation is a key high impact teaching strategy used by teachers to craft lessons that provide the right amount of support and challenge for every student.

Differentiated teaching enables all students to master their individual objectives and continually grow even if they aren’t necessarily at the same starting level.

The purpose of differentiation is to look at the relevant skill levels of students and ask: “What are we going to do to increase depth, broaden, extend and improve upon the knowledge and the skill base of every student in the class, regardless of the starting point?”

It doesn’t matter whether the student is at the top end of the academic spectrum, or whether the student requires additional support, it’s relevant to their starting point..

Differentiated teaching explained: Adjusting content, process and product

Teaching isn’t differentiated when a teacher sets the same task for every student, provides little variation, assesses all students against a general criterion, applies differentiated teaching techniques only for gifted students, and consistently establishes inflexible teaching groups.

Differentiated teaching occurs when a teacher plans a lesson that adjusts either the content being discussed, the process used to learn or the product expected from students to ensure that learners at different starting points can receive the instruction they need to grow and succeed.

Differentiating a lesson by adjusting content

By adjusting content, you deliver different parts of the curriculum to different students depending on their starting level and what you expect them to learn in that lesson.

Practically, this may mean refining foundational areas for students or supporting others to extend themselves deeper into the curriculum.

Differentiating a lesson by adjusting the process

When you adjust the process of a lesson, you are changing the methods you use to teach and how you expect students to learn. This adjustment could look like employing collaborative learning with excelling students and explicit instruction with others, or using modelled approaches or multimedia.

Differentiating a lesson by adjusting the product

When you adjust the product of a lesson, you are changing the specific success criteria for students to demonstrate what they have learned.

Teachers can differentiate the product of a lesson by asking some students to teach another student how to complete the object of the lesson, or to use the specific learning outcome to complete an authentic task. This can be comparable evidence of success and achievement.

Human Rights Day annually falls on Tuesday 10th December. Human Rights Day symbolises how all people of all cultures, religions, genders, and ages, should be treated equally. This year, Human Rights Day marks the 71st anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is a historic document that was adopted and put into use by the United Nations on 10th December, 1948.

This is our last Deadly Kids Report for 2019 and we say goodbye to everyone. Thank you for reading our reports this year!

SRC ReportHello everyone! What an amazing term it has been. The Movie Night was a great success and we raised a lot of money for the school. The Year 6 Graduation Night was also wonderful. Year 6 had an amazing time at West’s Ashfield. We are sure that Year 6 students have formed great friendships and will have meaningful memories of this school, once they leave for High School, however, there are still a few things to come. For example, the Year 6 fun day, Ashfield’s Got Talent, and the Presentation Day assembly. Year 1 and Kindergarten had a great time learning how to swim and we also had our school picnic where everyone had fun at Carss Park. It was a delightful experience! The Principal’s Disco is coming very soon, so make sure you try hard to help your house win!

Book ReportAlex Rider Stormbreaker

By Anthony Horowitz

Alex Rider is not closely related to his uncle, but when he is killed in a supposed car accident, Alex is not convinced that is what really happened. He becomes determined to find out the truth. But when he narrowly escaped from being annihilated looking for the truth, the head of MI6, Britain’s spy agency, sees Alex’s reckless curiosity as an

opportunity, and Alex is convinced into joining MI6 and begins training for his first case. An action-packed novel, the plot in this exceptional read changes at a breakneck speed. Stormbreaker is the first book in the gripping Alex Rider series. So far there are 14 books in this series. We recommend this book for ages 10+ and we rate it 3.7 stars out of five. Also, don’t forget to complete your Super Holiday Reading Challenge, to get some Certificates of Success next year! Merry Christmas and have a safe holiday.

S

How do you know Santa Claus is good at karate?

A: He has a black belt

• 200ml boiling water

• 200ml cold water

• 450g plain Madeira cake

• 60ml orange juice

• Fresh raspberries, to serve (optional)

• 125ml (1/2 cup) thickened cream

• 55g caster sugar

• 200g mascarpone

• 2 tbs custard powder

• 1 tbs caster sugar

• 410ml milk

Method:

1. Grease a 7cm-deep, 9 x 25.5cm, approx. loaf pan.

2. Place a gelatine leaf in a bowl of cold water. Set aside for five minutes or until soft. Squeeze out excess water.

3. Place gelatine leaf in a large heatproof jug with the jelly crystals. Add the boiling water. Stir to dissolve the crystals. Add the cold water. Stir well. Pour into the prepared pan. Place in the fridge for two hours or until set.

4. Meanwhile, for the cream layer, place two gelatine leaves in a bowl of cold water. Set aside for five minutes, or until soft. Combine the cream and sugar in a small saucepan and place over medium heat on a stove top.

5. Cook, stirring, for two minutes or until the sugar dissolves and the cream is warm. Squeeze out excess water from gelatine leaves. Add to the cream mixture. Stir until smooth and combined.

6. Set aside to cool slightly. Whisk in the mascarpone until smooth. Carefully pour the cooled cream mixture over the set jelly layer. Place in the fridge for 1-2 hours or until set.

7. For the custard layer, place the gelatine leaves in a bowl of cold water. Set aside for 5 minutes or until soft. Whisk the custard powder and sugar in a small saucepan until combined.

8. Gradually whisk in milk until smooth. Place over medium heat. Cook, whisking frequently, for three to five minutes until mixture boils and thickens. Squeeze out excess water from gelatine leaves.

9. Add to the custard mixture. Stir until smooth and combined. Cover the surface of the custard with plastic wrap and set aside to cool.

10. Carefully pour the cooled custard mixture over the set cream layer. Cut the Madeira cake into 1.5cm-thick slices.

11. Cover the custard layer with the cake slices, trimming to fit (you may not need all of the cake). Drizzle the cake with orange juice. Cover and place in the fridge overnight or until set.

12. Dip the loaf pan into hot water for 10 seconds to loosen the slice and turn out onto a serving plate. Decorate with raspberries, if you like.

The BookThey’re as old as the hills, been here for thousands of years

Yet as young as an infant, as their future fame nears

Capturing hearts like a sunset, drawing tears to my eyes

With armour of a strong knight, the cover never lies

As hard as a rock, with a heart of pure steel

Yet as soft as a pillow, running smooth like a wheel

My book is always here to save the day

Like fish to a hook, never running away
