The 7 Commandmentth
Exodus 20:14
Part 2
In Bible times, the issue of sex was an ongoing war between those who were faithful to God and those who
were pagan. Many of the pagan cults participated in sexual rituals. In fact, many of their temples of worship
were supported by prostitution - male and female. Baal worship, which was the strongest pagan worship in
the area and especially during the Old Testament, practiced a fertility ritual. As a farmer who wanted a good
crop, you went to the pagan temple and either participated in a sexual act or paid someone to participate in
the sexual act, so that your harvest would be blessed. From the earliest days, sexual purity became a trade
mark of faithfulness to God.
There were two aspects to this Seventh Commandment. Adultery and Fornication. While the two terms are
often blurred in scripture, they generally meant: Adultery: sexual activity with someone other than the
person you were married too. Fornication: sexual activity outside the bonds of marriage.

LAITY SUNDAY - JANUARY 15, 2012
The Disciple Women are planning the annual
Laity Sunday for Hillside on January 15th. Please plan on
attending our Laity Sunday Worship Services at 8:15 or
10:45 AM on January 15, 2012. Our very special speaker
on that Sunday will be Cindy Kay Olson, a former Enron employee and
executive who worked closely with Ken Lay. Cindy has written a book
entitled “The Whole Truth, So Help Me God.” Cindy will share her faith
journey with us as she went from the highs of corporate success to the
lows of Enron’s collapse. A native of Wichita, Cindy is a graduate of
Wichita State University and best of all, she is the daughter of Don &
Pat Dean.
Our special offering on this Sunday will go towards Youth
Horizons here in Wichita, and an envelope will be provided at that time.
Bonnie Thompson, Disciples Women Laity Sunday Chairman
DILLONS CERTIFICATES
This has been an exceptionally good year for Dillons
Certificate sales. This past month showed our biggest sales ever.
Thanks to all of you for your great support. All of our profit
goes to help support mission projects.
The certificates can be used for groceries, flowers,
prescriptions, and gasoline. Remember, they spend just like real
money!
TABS FOR RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE
Do you know what tabs for Ronald McDonald house are, or
why we collect them? Ronald McDonald House houses families who
need shelter while a family member is in the hospital. Last year $4,000
was collected to help. SAVE your tabs and place them in the container
at the courtyard entrance.
CAMPBELL’S SOUP LABELS
Don’t forget to save your Campbell’s labels and bring them to
church and place in the Soup Can Replica by the courtyard door.
These help Woodhaven Learning Center with much needed items.

PATHWAYS PARENTS & KIDS
Pathways Kids, assisted by Pastor Josh & several
Chi Rho & CYF youths, presented a wonderful Blacklight
Christmas Pageant, “And the Animals Danced.” All who
attended gave kudos to the kids who participated and the
many adults who helped and supported their efforts. It was a beautiful
experience! This presentation has grown into one of the many annual
celebrations of the birth of Christ at HCC. Still to come is the Christmas
Eve Nativity, with live animals. Aren’t we fortunate to have so many willing
participants and supporters of children’s activities?
2012 will start out a bit quiet for children, but they will be singing
in Worship on Sunday, January 8 , and every second Sunday of the year. th
We are hoping Mark will invite Pathways Kids to sing with the adult choir
soon, because it is lovely to see the front of the church filled with smiling
faces and beautiful sound. The kids who participate in choir and dramatic
presentations earn a special award for their Pathways Cross. These
awards are presented each year at promotion time. Last year it was a
golden music note and the kids who qualified are proud of them.
We thank all of you who come to our pageants. We thank all of
you who donate to Children’s Ministries, teach and assist with classes, work
at painting, sewing, serving food, herding kids and animals, or just
complementing the kids and letting them know you like seeing and hearing
them. We wish you all a wonderful 2012.
God bless you every one!

HOW TO GIVE TO CHARITY
PART 1
According to Giving USA Foundation, American individuals
donated more than $227 billion to charity in 2009. Though far less than the
money spent on retail purchases or socked away in investment accounts,
there is no reason not to be diligent or choosy when making charitable
contributions.
And, unlike straight-up spending, donating to charity has the
power to not only improve the lives of others – it can make you happy too.
A 2010 study published by Aradhna Krishna, a marketing professor at the
University of Michigan, concluded that giving to a charity increases a
person’s feelings of contentment, while giving through
“cause marketing” – the term used when a for profit
company donates a percentage of your purchase to
charity – actually decreases it.
Tune in next month, to see how to make sure
that your contributions are well spent.
