Careful What You Pray For John 1:10-18 Genesis not only says that God creates, but that God has created each of us to be creative as well. God gives us the joy of joining with him in creating something out of nothing: The human is first of all a promise making, promise keeping, promise breaking creature. In the first account of creation, it is said that the Spirit of God "hovered" over the waters. T hat's an appropriate translation of the Hebrew. But it does make the Holy Spirit sound a bit like a helicopter that hovers over something. Perhaps a more vivid translation of the Hebrew is that the Spirit "brooded" over the dark, chaotic waters. The Holy Spirit became a generative force, a means that brooded, gave birth to something out of nothing. It is of the nature of the Holy Spirit to give birth. Her surgery was over. Now her cancer seemed at last to be held in abeyance. But at a great cost. Her tumor had been removed from her spine but she was left unable to walk. "In just a few days, I've gone from complete independence, to great dependence," she lamented to me. "So many of the things I once enjoyed doing - biking, gardening - all that seems to be taken from me. I just can't imagine my life in this way." My heart went out to her. Could she have a new life? Out of this sad tragedy, could there be a new beginning? What she needed most was not a new attitude, but rather a whole new world, a world different from the old. Do you think I, as her pastor, could dare to pray for a new world? In the first accountof creation, it is said that the Spirit of God "hovered" over the waters. That's an appropriate translationof the Hebrew. Perhaps a more vivid translation of the Hebrew is that the Spirit "brooded" over the dark, chaotic waters. The Holy Spirit became a generative force, a means that brooded, gave birth to something out ofnothing. Her surgery was over. Now her cancer seemed at last to be held in abeyance. But at a greatcost. Her tumor had been removed from her spine but she was left unable to walk. "In just a few days,I've gone from complete independence, to great dependence," she lamented to me. "So many of thethings I once enjoyed doing - biking, gardening - all that seems to be taken from me. I just can't imaginemy life in this way." My heart went out to her. Could she have a new life? Out of this sad tragedy, couldthere be a new beginning?

What she needed most was not a new attitude, but rather a whole new world, a world differentfrom the old. Do you think I, as her pastor, could dare to pray for a new world?

I want to take this opportunity to thank our Hillside family for purchasingDillons reloadable gift cards. The number of Hillside members contributing to our churchby using the gift cards has grown by over 100% in the last year! Twice as many cardholders equals twice as much income going to Disciples Women’s Fellowship to use forHillside projects; DW provided funds to carpet the Parlor last year and recently paid forhalf the cost of the new dishwasher. NOTES FROM MARK WALKER: I need twenty (20) more people in the Choir. If that happens we can add a Choir in the 8:15 service, & combine forspecial events. Rehearsals are Wednesdays from 7:30-8:30 PM, & I am patient with absences. The Choir is a wonderful group of people who have funaround the love of singing. I invite you to try it. Our Choir Kick Off Social is going to be at Barney & Lois Rahal’s home on Saturday, August 24th at5:00 PM. Let me personally invite you. Our first Choir Rehearsal of the season will be Wednesday, August 28th at 7:00 PM in the Choir Room. Youdon’t need any special gifts or abilities, just a love of singing. Come & join me & let’s build the Choir & music program of this Church.

If you have any questions email me at [email protected]. We hope to be able to sing at the General Assembly of the Christian Church (Disciples ofChrist) in 2015, & I hope you will be a part of it. Mark Walker, Director of Music
