promise and give you the right words to
say. So, go and share Christ with others,
and watch God do His work!
Pastor Owen Stricklin
CHARGE CONFERENCE FOR 2012
Rev. Stephen Hartsfield served as the
Presiding Elder for the annual Charge Conference on Sept. 18th.
The order of business was as follows: • Members for Removal – We have none this
year. • 2013 Clergy Compensation – The salaries
for both our Pastors were approved.
• Connectional Giving – We anticipate that
we will meet 100% of our apportionments for 2012 and 2013.
• Finance Report – We have outstanding
debt due to the FUMC Foundation and
MainStreet Community Bank, but do not
anticipate difficulty in meeting these debt payments. Our financial records have
been audited and found satisfactory. • Lay Leadership Nominations – Phil
Goldthwait was elected as Chairperson of
the Church Council, Judy Good as Church
Treasurer, and Jeanne Fieser as Financial
Secretary. Because we now have 2 ap-
pointed Pastors, we will have 2 delegates
to the Annual Conference – Dave Dayton
and Phil Goldthwait. Ellie Freund was
elected as Lay Leader and Recording
Secretary. New members elected to the
Staff Parish Relations Committee for a 3-year term were Kathy Williams, Candy
Soucek, and Donna Then. New Finance Committee members (3 years) are C.I. Mil-
ler, Stephanie Weaver, and Ryan Gorman,
and Board of Trustees members (3 years)
are Tyrene Townsley, Barry Olson, and Terry
Do not worry about what to say or how to
say it. At that time you will be given what to
say, for it will not be you speaking, but the
Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
Matthew 10:19b-20
Success is defined in many ways. But
regardless of how we define it, we want
some type of memento, something to
show for that success. In business, it’s
framing that first dollar of profit. When
fishing, it’s the picture of that trophy
catch displayed on the wall. And spiritu-
ally, it’s the memory of that first person
we are able to lead to Christ.
We can dream about success all day
long, but we’ve got to take action in or-
der to achieve it. The entrepreneur can
have the most genius business plan in
the world. But if no action is taken to
work that plan, it’ll never be a success.
The fisherman can have the best
boat, the most up-to-date tracking de-
vices, and the most tricked out lures
and baits. But, if he never casts his
line, he’ll never make that trophy catch.
The same is true in our spiritual jour-
ney. We have the greatest Spokesper-
son in the world on our side, ready to
speak through us to people who need
to know Jesus Christ. But, if we never
open our mouths to tell our story, we
won’t be able to experience the ulti-
mate joy of seeing them step over the
line of faith.
When the opportunity presents itself
to share your story with someone, you
don’t have to worry about saying the
perfect words. You also don’t have to
quote Scripture verbatim or deliver a
mini-sermon on the spot. You only need
to trust that when you boldly take ac-
tion to speak, God will be true to His

Before closing the meeting, Rev. Harts-
field reported on the groundbreaking he
attended for the Madison Youth Ranch.
This will be a second campus for the Flori-
da United Methodist Children’s Home,
and $1,000,000 has already been donat-
ed, as well as the 320 acres of land on
which it is being built.
ADMINISTRATIVE COUNCIL REPORT
The Administrative Council met on Sept.
18th after the Charge Conference was ad-
journed. The Murder Mystery Night was at-
tended by about 160 people and was con-
sidered a big success with great food and
great fun. It is hoped that the groups that
worked together to solve the “whodunit” will meet again to enjoy the fun and fellow-
ship they shared at church.
Teeter Mauldin reported that Prayer
Time on Wednesday afternoons at 5:00 is
going great, and there have been record-breaking numbers of people attending the
past few weeks.
Ted Wolfe gave an overview of how
Mercy Hour is organized, and also stated
that attendance is increasing there as well. This last week there were 47 guests who
were cared for by the 20 or so volunteers.
Mark Bitner reported on the Youth, say-
ing that he is also seeing growth in the
numbers of young people involved in the Wednesday night and Sunday afternoon
programs. He told about the effort to in-
volve more of the “unchurched” by sched-uling Parents vs. Students activities for such
things as volleyball and ultimate Frisbee.
The Youth will have a training session in
Oct. in order to participate as ushers, greet-
ers, and liturgists in our worship services.
They are also helping with the chair tear-
down after the contemporary service eve-
ry 3rd Sunday of the month. This was the last meeting for Josh Smith
before leaving for his new position at a
church in Buckhead, Georgia. The Council
Medlin. The Committee on Nominations
and Leadership Development will have
John Watson, Wendy Highland, and Judy
West serving for the next 3 years, Joe Roof
will be the Interpreter of Connectional Giv-
ing, and Jim Bernard will again be our Chil-
dren’s Home Representative. • Recommendation of Candidates for Or-
dained Ministry – Jonathan Gaylord was
approved for Continuation of Candidacy
for Ordained Ministry. He is presently serv-
ing as a local pastor at a church in south
Georgia. • Lay Servant Ministry – Doan Moorman has
completed Basic course work as Local Church Lay Servant. Lois Fritch and Ted
Wolfe have completed Advanced course work and are Certified Lay Servants.
• Missional Vital Signs Discussion of Goals –
Addressing the statistics as reported in our
previous Charge Conference, we have en-
couraging signs for the future. • Passionate Worship – We have experi-
enced an increase in our attendance dur-
ing the past six months, and we anticipate
a larger increase by the end of the year,
due in part to our new extension ministry. • Radical Hospitality – We have already ex-
ceeded our goal for members joining by
Profession of Faith (a sign of a healthy
church). • Intentional Discipling – Although we have
not reached the goal yet this year, with
additional classes being offered and small
groups being formed, we will definitely ex-ceed our expectations.
• Salty Service – The difficulty of this goal is
not in the activity, but in the reporting. We
have yet to develop a plan where we can
get this information accurately. • Extravagant Generosity – We are on course
to reach or exceed our goal. At the end of
2012, we expect over $1.2 million to be giv-
en to ministries and mission of the local
church.

FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH OF DELAND OCTOBER, 2012
expressed appreciation for the devotion
he has shown over the last 3 years, and
Josh said that he is confident that the plan-
ning teams will continue to lead our wor-
ship as well as ever. Barbara Anderson and
Lindsey Iverson will fill in for him on an inter-
im basis
Pastor Ben Collins reported that he has
been very busy with the groups of young
adults he’s been working with. There is an
average of about 25 members attending
his worship service on Sunday nights, and
he continues to network with Stetson stu-
dents (having “Taco Tuesdays” and
coaching a triathlon team) and leading
women’s study groups in the spring and
fall. He is working with his group to engage them in service projects in the community
at the Neighborhood Center and for find-
ing housing for veterans. Dave Joseph was
introduced as the Extension Ministry repre-
sentative to the Administrative Council, and he updated the group on the renova-
tions to the 111 S. Alabama property. He
was happy to report that the Fire Marshall
gave the building a designation as a Wor-
ship Center, so we won’t have to install a fire sprinkler system.
Our Count Me In chairpersons, Tim and
Connie Schroyer, stated that the church
has received over 90% of the pledges that
were made at the beginning of the capital funds campaign, and they are confident
that we will reach 100% by the end of the 3
year period next February. They thanked
everyone for their support. An outline for
preparations for the Fall Festival was given,
and samples of publicity fliers were handed
out. Saturday, October 27th is the big day,
so plan to help out as much as you can. Kelly Crump sent a report, reminding
everyone that the Pumpkin Patch will need
volunteers once pumpkins arrive on Sept.
30th. She has groups with about 500 chil-
dren scheduled for visits already this year. Barbara Stricklin addressed the
council, stating that the Impact studies on
Wed. nights was going well with over 150
people attending each week. She has 40
reservations for people attending the
Women of Faith event in Orlando, and
she announced that Trunk or Treat will be
held on Wed. Oct. 24th.
The UMM will participate in the
Christmas Parade on Dec. 1st. Don West
said that the parade may be changed to
the daytime instead of the nighttime. The
UMW is ordering pecans for their holiday
sale which is their major fundraiser for Mis-
sions.
Pastor Owen reported that a new
Custodian, Jose Ayala, has been hired. A
part-time Night Custodian position still
needs to be filled. He updated the coun-cil on preparations for the new Capital
Funds campaign staring in March of 2013.
Pete Bissinger will be the overall Manager,
Terry Medlin has accepted the position of
Project Manager, and Chris and Michelle Maikisch will head the Marketing cam-
paign. Pastor Owen also informed the
group that Mr. I.C. Brooks will be celebrat-
ing his 100th birthday in church with nu-
merous members of his family in attend-ance for worship. Now that’s something
to celebrate!
Our Best Wishes
to Josh and Lisa Smith
as they leave DeLand
and begin a new ministry
in Atlanta, Georgia.
Josh will be the Director
of Contemporary Music
at the Northside United
Methodist Church.

Report to the Congregation on the
Newly Refurbished Hettie Austin Room from Maxine Doughton
September 30th was a day to celebrate the new look as we entered the church.
To recap the project:
Every effort was made to utilize items we already possessed: • The sofa and chairs were reupholstered, using com-
mercial grade, USA-made fabrics; • The red carpet that was removed is being reused in the LEC and Youth areas;
• The desk and Hettie Austin tables were brought over from the LEC Parlor;
• We also recruited our own church volunteers. Don West and John Trenholm spent countless hours re-arranging the pictures, installing the spot light, ap-plying the door trim, and Harley Burger provided the top for the round table — just to name a part of the myriad of support work needed to make the pro-ject a reality; and
• Poppy Flack’s interior design expertise made it all possible.
• I hope all of you feel as honored as I do to help make God’s house feel warm and welcoming to first United Methodist members and visitors.
“Do all the good things you can by all the means you can.”

STUDENT
MINISTRY

We have had a great month in the
youth department. God is really moving
amongst the next generation! We had sev-
eral opportunities for fun and service dur-
ing the month of September. We expect
the month of October to be filled with
pumpkins and all things related to pump-kins.
They arrived on Sunday September
30th, but this fundraiser takes up the whole
month of October. This is the biggest fund-
raiser of the year for the youth, many put all of their sweat and hard work into partici-
pating at the pumpkin patch to raise mon-
ey for the various trips and events that we
have as a youth group. If you haven’t par-
ticipated before or haven’t done it much, I encourage you to get involved with it. Not
only is it a lot of fun, but many families are
able to raise enough money for the child
to go on whole trips so that it doesn’t have
to come out of your pocket. Are you in High School? Do you like
having fun? Come check out our 2nd fifth
quarter after the football game on Friday
October 12th. This is the biggest one of the
year it is the all popular muck fest! Fifth quarters are for ALL high school
students in the area, and it is put on by a group of youth pastors from churches all
around the DeLand area. Muck fest takes
place at Stetson Baptist church every year.
Another event put on by that same group of community youth pastors is Dis-
placed. This event is to raise awareness
amongst teens for homelessness. We
have the opportunity to sleep outside in
cardboard boxes and then the next day
will be filled with different ways to serve
the homeless of our community as well as
other events to open student’s eyes to
the compassion for others. This event will
take place on Sunday, November 11th
and roll into Monday, November 12th
which is a no school day.
2 Meetings in October!
UMM will meet on Thursday, Oct. 18 at 6:30 in
the LEC for their regular monthly meeting.
On Thursday, Oct. 25, the District UMM will
meet at Edgewater UMC.
Call the church office or sign up for dinner on the Sunday bulletin for either of these meet-
ings.
Gift/Cash Cards are available to order and we do have a few in stock. Plan ahead for
Christmas. Parents of youth needing financial help for mission trips next summer should
check with us on how we can help now, not next spring!!!!

Please come join us on Wednesdays at 5:00 PM in the sanctuary during the summer for our prayer time. We are lifted up as we pray for our country, state, community, church, and each other.
