Evan Cox and Flat Stanley From: Francine Dufour Jones Evan’s MeMa Date: 2/18/2011 6:11:10 PM Subject: Flat Stanley arrived in Alaska Flat Stanley arrived here the other day. He needed to rest from the long 2 week journey. He is up and ready to go now. Evan Cox flattened himself and designed this Flat Stanley. As you can see it is a little colder than Stanley is used to (coming from sunny California). Brrrrrrr So I made him an Alaskan parka and boots. Tomorrow we are going on a road trip to Wasilla Alaska and will stop on the way for photo ops. He told me he would like some mittens though. I will make some tonight. He is very excited but misses you.

Evan Cox and Flat Stanley From: Francine Dufour Jones Evan’s MeMa

Date: 2/18/2011 6:11:10 PM

Subject: Flat Stanley arrived in Alaska

Flat Stanley arrived here the other day. He needed to rest from the long 2 week journey.

He is up and ready to go now. Evan Cox flattened himself and designed this Flat Stanley.

As you can see it is a little colder than Stanley is used to

(coming from sunny California). Brrrrrrr

So I made him an Alaskan parka and boots.

Tomorrow we are going on a road trip to Wasilla Alaska

and will stop on the way for photo ops.

He told me he would like some mittens though.

I will make some tonight. He is very excited but misses

you.

Page 2: Evan's Flat Stanley 4

Yaahooo let's go play in the snow. He does not like to wait.

I will keep you up to date.

Love Mema

Stanley at the Shopping Mall in Alaska

Last week Evan’s Flat Stanley went to lunch with me and my friend Stephanie. Then we decided to take

Flat Stanley with us shopping. It is a bright sunny day. It is warming up today you can see the snow is

starting to melt a little. You can see he has his mittens on now. That is the shopping center behind us.

We are getting ready for another

road trip to Wasilla, Alaska.

Stanley is very excited and waits

patiently to go.

It is so nice he always has a smile

on his face. Evan created such a

friendly guy. He is very nice to

be around.

Road Trip to Wasilla, Alaska

Here we are on the road

again. Stanley is looking

out the window. We are

on the way to an art

class.  Eeeeeeehaaa!

There are a lot of great mountains to look at on the way. It is another

bright sunny but cold day here in Alaska.

Page 5: Evan's Flat Stanley 4

Stanley says: We are at the art class now and the artists let me sit on the easel to have me picture taken.

The sun was so bright my face looks totally white but it was fun playing in all the yummy colors they

mixed. My creator Evan is very artistic also.  He would love all the colors I am sure.

Well we just finished art class and

now we are headed back to

Anchorage but first we are going to

visit a very special place.

It is an old Russian Orthodox Church called St. Nicholas Skete in Eklutna, Alaska.  You see if you look on a map, Alaska and Russia are very close together.

There are many historic buildings left in Alaska from the time Russians own Alaska. Almost all of today’s Russian Orthodox Church buildings in Alaska were constructed

after the Russians left their American territory. However, the Russian Orthodox Church is still

very active today especially among the native people of Alaska. The churches are built in the

tradition of the missionary churches erected by the Russian monks and can thus rightfully be

considered true remnants of a bygone era.

Shortly after the Russian Orthodox Church was established in Alaska in 1741 it began to start

Page 7: Evan's Flat Stanley 4

Christianizing the native inhabitants of the areas the Russian fur traders invaded. In 1794 the first mission was

founded on Kodiak Island in southeastern Alaska. The Russians sold Alaska to the Americans in 1867.

Here are some photos of Stanley at St. Nicholas Skete.

There are tiny wooden whitewashed church stands beside an old log chapel and is surrounded by a native Russian

cemetery with small spirit houses. Each local family has its own traditional family colors and still buries their dead in

the cemetery.

Many of these little houses were just the right size for Stanley.

Stanley says:

Can you see all the little houses in the background with

the many colors of the families?

I am sitting on a hand carved moose here.  Well time to

go back to Anchorage now.

Page 8: Evan's Flat Stanley 4

Moose in the Yard

Speaking of moose; there are a lot of moose in Alaska. They are about

the size of horses.  Here are photos of some moose right in Grand Pa

Ken and Mema’s back yard. I was looking out the window and there

they

were!

Sometimes they look in the window or they might hang around and talk.

Here is what I like to do in the backyard. Make some snow angels. I do not get to do that in California.

After all the excitement with Bailey and Paco and Miro ... and just being in Montreal, Canada, made him a little bit tired. He asked me to put up a hammock for him and chose his very favorite silk scarf. So, here he is having a nappy up in a tree in our sunroom ... and you bet, he didn't even want to take off his Canadian outfit.

Dear Evan and your classmates, First sorry for my written English, I can read and some time I understand when I speak English. This is difficult if you do not speak English all the time. My village is called Alhaurin de la Torre in Málaga. Málaga is a province (I think are like your county) of Andalucia Community (like your States) in southern Spain

Flat Stanley at the roundabout into the town.

Torre or the tower, this is a copy of the original village tower that was used for protection.

Page 35: Evan's Flat Stanley 4

We are located in the foothills of the Sierra de Mijas to about 10 km .from the beach, is crossed by several streams, the most important is the Arroyo Blanquillo (Whitey Stream)

Arroyo Blanquillo is the name of this stream. It has water now but loses the water in summer. In the village we have a megalithic sites, we also have an abandoned silver mine from the time of the Romans then called Vetusta Lauro, but its current name comes from the Arab occupation of the seventh century to the fifteenth century. Legends say the translation is two fold on the one hand ALHAU phonetic transcription would garden in Arabic, but the other would be the name of the ruling family at the Arabic time. Who knows ..... Now has about 35.0000 inhabitants, most are developments in the vicinity of the capital, only 16 km.

Page 36: Evan's Flat Stanley 4

Málaga is filled with gardens, playgrounds and courts for basketball and soccer for 7, around by north side we have a pine forest were we walk on weekend. .... The weather is very cloudy (average temperature is about 22 degrees), on cold winter days does not usually drop of 5-9 ° and 37 °in summer, ideal to go to the beach.

Stanley likes to smell the roses from my garden.

Page 37: Evan's Flat Stanley 4

Oh I almost forgot to tell you Antonio Banderas is from Málaga. Remember played Zorro and is married to actress Melanie Griffith.

Here is "Flat Stanley" enjoying the breeze from our deck in the upper Northwest tip of Washington State. Stanley is pointing with his left hand, at the Straits of Juan de Fuca, and across the strait to Victoria British Columbia Canada.

Stanley mentioned that this place looked very much like Alaska where he had also visited... except there is no snow here right now. Stanley was a very good visitor! He was very interested in his surroundings! He loved watching the fishermen in their boats, the ferry traveling back and forth across to Victoria, and listening to the new Boeing 787 "dreamliner' airplane flying over head on test flights from the Boeing airplane plant near Seattle.

At night, he heard the waves crashing into the bluff below our house.. he said it lulled him to sleep. Stanley didn't eat much, .. being 'flat' you know... but he did take a bite of whatever was served to him, and he said it was YUMMY!

We get lots and lots of rain, here in the Pacific Northwest.. but that is what keeps our trees so green! Stanley even spotted a few rainbows over the water. He was searching for the "pot of gold' where the rainbow ended in the

Page 60: Evan's Flat Stanley 4

water...He thought he could see the pot.. but it was too far out to go and reach it!

We really enjoyed having Stanley visit us. We gave him hugs and kisses and sent him on his way to his next adventure. We are excited to hear where he is going next!

Sincerely, Karen and Rick Sistek

We are entering Missouri.

Flat Stanley on I-44 going under McDonalds which is accessible for both east bound and west bound travelers this is near Vinita, OK. Evan’s MeMa asked: My he sure is getting around. Did he get a burger and fries? Francine :) Linda said: Not this time, we flew past before we realized what it was, just long enough to grab camera, but had already missed the exit. Then I found the darling mosaic tile on the floor of the visitors' center in Missouri. We will make it to Iowa tomorrow, after that we will be in 1 location for awhile. When does Stanley finish? End of school year? I hope Evan I think it is has fun looking these places up. It's been fun for my husband and me. Love, Linda

From Jan Billings in Glastonbury UK April 18, 2011 Evan’s Flat Stanley had a wonderful time romping through the green gardens, listening to tales of King Arthur and wondering if he could find the Holy Grail. Perhaps he might even see a faery or two. The green hill is Chalice Hill where the Holy Grail is supposed to be buried. It is overlooking the Chalice Well Gardens and you can see them from my roof garden.

Glastonbury, ‘Avalon of the Heart’ is an other worldly paradise. It is a sacred land, known as the Isle of Avalon, abundant in myths, legends and spiritual energy, where deep transformative processes take place within us. Glastonbury is a magical place of personal pilgrimage and spiritual unfoldment where the veils are thinnest between the invisible worlds, the inner and outer realities. Berachah, a beautiful split-level house is built into the slopes of Glastonbury Tor, an ancient mystical site, and overlooks the healing, regenerative iron-based waters of the red spring of The Chalice Well Gardens. Berachah stands between the healing nourishing calcium-based waters of The White Spring, and the footpath leading up to Glastonbury Tor. From the Breakfast room, there are wonderful panoramic views over the Vale of Avalon.

Page 85: Evan's Flat Stanley 4

Berachah was once part of Chalice Orchard, where the writer and occultist, Dion Fortune used to live. The house, standing on the original site of her Temple, was designed and built by a Welsh architect who named it Berachah, meaning ‘Place of special spiritual blessing’. In Sufi ‘Beraka’, means ‘Point of blessing’. One of the Glastonbury Holy Thorn trees grows in the garden. It is reputed to be a cutting from the Holy Thorn planted by Joseph of Arimathea on Wearyall Hill. It has beautiful white flowers in Springtime, and the unusual second flowering between Winter Solstice and Imbolc.
