TENNIS TIPS…

by Darryl Wisner

Here is a quick check list for being an effective server in doubles.

Call out the score, plan the speed, spin and placement of your serve. Serve and volley or serve and stay back but make sure you plan this in advance.

Get 70% of your first serves in play. If you miss your first serve you create a “must” situation for your second serve, your partner goes into more of a defensive mode and your opponent plans a more aggressive return. Adjust the seed and placement of your serve so that 7 out of 10 are going in.

Serve down the center in the deuce court, at the returner’s body in the ad court. Obviously change up where you place your serve but these two serves are the most important in the game of doubles.

Plan on hitting your first volley cross court, only occasionally hitting it down the line when the return is high or slow.

The server is responsible for the first volley unless your partner has a good look at a high ball in the center - get the first volley in play.

Now take these ideas out to the court and go hold serve!

Policy Changes The ESTC Board of Directors approved the following two changes to the Membership Handbook:

Supervision of Children

Children ages 12 and under may swim only when a certified lifeguard is on duty, or in the company of a parent or responsible delegate. Children under age 7 must be accompanied by a parent or responsible delegate at all times. Children ages 7-10 must have a parent or responsible delegate on the premises at all times unless they are participating in Club programming. Parents or responsible delegates are directly responsible for the conduct and supervision of their children at the Club.

Court Reservations – Courts 9 -1 1 The tennis professional staff is allocated teaching courts by the General Manager. Courts allocated are for instructional purposes only. One teaching court (9, 10, or 11) can be reserved by members one week in advance prior to 8:00AM if it does not conflict with any ESTC programming. Otherwise, courts 9, 10 & 11 are held until 5:00pm one day in advance at which point the courts may be reserved. The professionals have the opportunity to reserve courts 4 & 5 prior to the advanced court reservation policy. Courts 4 & 5 will not be used for teaching during prime times and will not be used when courts 9 -11 are available.
