GALILEE CHURCH NETAugust 2017

From the Rector

Dear Friends,

Often I write about upcoming events—but for our August edition of the Net—I

want to express my gratitude and thanks to God for Galilee parish, our parishioners and our staff.

As I write, Day 1 of Vacation Bible School is occur-ring. I have looked in several times today to see our parish family ministering the love of Jesus to 150 children. I have watched Lillie Tillar (with her inim-itable enthusiasm and joy) lead and direct this large group. I thank God for everyone who has helped in this undertaking!

Yesterday, Father Patrick preached his first sermon at Galilee—and Peter Hartwig started a new group for our 20s-30s crowd. I am grateful for these two fine additions to our staff ministry team.

Meanwhile, we have a large number of parishioners who serve at Galilee in many and various capacities. I just hung up the phone with a parishioner who ex-pressed her thanks for the flowers, cards, calls, visits, meals and prayers that she received during a recent difficult time. This is a parish that cares for each oth-er—and so fulfills the law of Christ (Galatians 6.2).

I may not say it enough—but I am grateful that the Lord called me to Galilee—and it is a joy to be among you. Thank you for your partnership in the Gospel.

TRAVEL STUDY TOUR: EDINBURGH TO CANTERBURY

Galilee's next travel study tour is in May 2018, with Dr. Terry Lindvall and Fr. Andy Buchanan as your pilgrim leaders. We'll begin in Edinburgh and make our way south to Canterbury, seeing not only the differences between Celtic Christianity and Ro-man Christianity--but also seeing firsthand how the Reformation affected the faith we hold today. We'll grow in faith and understanding, while having fun along the way. To learn more and see the itinerary, click here:https://reformationtours.com/package/rtl18galilee/

CONCERT FUNDRAISER FOR THE FOODBANK OF SOUTHEASTERN VIRGINIA

AND THE EASTERN SHORE

THURSDAY AUGUST 17TH7:30PM

Galilee Church will present a Music Feeds Us Quartet concert to benefit the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore on Thursday, August 17th, at 7:30 P.M. The

quartet will perform string quartets by Haydn, Golijov, and Mendelssohn. There will be a reception to meet the artists immediately following the concert.

Celebrating their sixth season, Music Feeds Us -- a concert series and educational program originating in Charlottesville -- promotes hunger relief. During the past five years, their concerts have raised over 110,000 meals for foodbanks in Virginia. In addition to cham-ber music benefit concerts, the MFU Quartet has col-

laborated with arts organizations, libraries, and schools to promote both classical music and hunger awareness. Fitz Gary, Founder and Artistic Director, defines the mission of the chamber music-service organization as "communicating social responsibility through classical music, by uniting communities in an effort to alleviate hunger."

Because of the enthusiastic response to the MFU Quar-tet’s 2016 concert, Galilee Church will sponsor this year’s MFU fundraiser for the Foodbank. Last year the Quartet concert raised $2,886 and collected 155 pounds of food -- the equivalent of 8,375 meals for distribution in Hampton Roads and the Eastern Shore.

The Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the East-ern Shore, established in 1981, is a member of Feeding America and the Federation of Virginia Food Banks. In their mission to eliminate hunger in our community, the Foodbank has distributed over 313 million pounds of food, equating to over 261 million meals through-out their 4,745 square-mile service area. For every $10 donated, the Foodbank is able to provide $60 worth of grocery products.

We request that concert attendees bring non-perishable food or monetary donations to help alleviate hunger in the community.

DOUGLASS PATTERSON SERIES PRESENTS

ERIC METAXASTHURSDAY, OCTOBER 5TH

On October 5th, the Douglass Patterson Speaker Series will bring Eric Metaxas to Galilee for an evening program, where Eric will speak on the question of Miracles.

Eric Metaxas (born 1963) is an American author, speak-er, and radio host. He is known for two biographies, Amazing Grace: William Wilberforce and the Heroic Campaign to End Slavery about William Wilberforce and Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy about Di-etrich Bonhoeffer. His other works If You Can Keep It: The Forgotten Promise of American Liberty and Miracles: What They Are, Why They Happen, and How They Can Change Your Life are both New York Times best sell-ing books. He has also written humor, children's books, and scripts for VeggieTales. Metaxas is the founder and host of the NYC-based event series, "Socrates in the City: Conversations on the Examined Life" and the host of the nationally syndicated radio program, The Eric Metaxas Show.

Metaxas was raised in the Greek Orthodox Church and while he has not formally left it (saying he has "great respect" for it) he attends an Evangelical Episcopal church in New York. Metaxas describes himself as a "Mere Christian" after the works of C.S. Lewis, saying his books "don't touch upon anything at all where Prot-estants, Catholics, and Orthodox Christians differ. They

express just the ba-sics of the faith, from a basic, ecumenical Christian viewpoint. They only talk about the Christian faith that they have agreement on."

Metaxas has been featured as a cultur-al commentator on CNN, MSNBC, and the Fox News Chan-nel, most frequently on the show "Red Eye"; and has discussed his own books on The History Channel, C-Span's Book TV, the Glenn Beck Program, and Huckabee. He has been featured on many radio programs, including NPR's Morning Edition, Talk of the Nation, The Laura Ingra-ham Show, and On Being with Krista Tippett, as well as Hugh Hewitt, Bill Bennett, Kerby Anderson's Point of View, and The Alan Colmes Show.

On February 2, 2012, Metaxas was the keynote speaker for the 2012 National Prayer Breakfast.

Metaxas is the winner of several awards for his work, including the Becket Fund's Canterbury Medal in 2011 and the Human Life Review's Defender of Life Award in 2013.

Please mark your calendars now for this special evening.

WELCOME HOME INFORMATION LUNCHEON Thursday Aug 24th 12:00-1:30pm Tucker hall.

The primary invite is for serving local Military Chaplains. The purpose is two-fold: To say thank you to you and the chaplains AND to inform local military of what we do at Galilee for veterans with the "Welcome Home Initiative"

(WHI). We may ask for a WHI testimony or two.

If you are a Veteran of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard, please plan to join Father Nigel and others on August 24, 2017 from noon until 1:30pm for lunch at Galilee! Our purpose will be to join active duty Military Chaplains to hear a presentation on By His Wounds Ministry, the Welcome Home Initiative, and the monthly Combat Stress Recovery support group. This will be an outstanding opportunity to learn more about these ministries specifically designed for Combat Veterans and their spouses while coping with post-traumatic stress or moral injury. It will also serve as a means to meet some of the Military Chaplains who provide support and counsel to both those on Active Duty and in the Veteran ranks and who would benefit from this information.

Kindly RSVP by calling the Church Office at 757.428.3573

FUNDRAISER SEPTEMBER 24JORDAN HALL, NOON-2:00

The Welcome Home Initiative is coming to Galilee Church in November, the 2nd-4th. The program is free to the veterans and their spouse, so quite frankly, we need to raise some

funds to help house and feed the group. It is estimat-ed that the cost to do this is $500 per couple. To that end the men of Galilee have committed to putting on a BBQ fundraiser on September 24th. Last years event was a great success and much appreciated and while the fundraiser may not fully fund the program, estimated at $12,500, it went a long way to helping underwrite a most worthy program.

So, here's how you (or someone you know) can help...

• Match Sponsor...$2,000 (5 tickets included)• Veteran Sponsor.....$500 (4 tickets included)• Clam Sponsor...$250 (3 tickets included)• Friend Sponsor....$100 (2 tickets included)• BBQ Individual Ticket...$25• Resource materials for each vet (books)....$1,500.

We are also looking for volunteers to help with logistical needs prior to and the day of both events.

Small Group We have a small group for you. Call Marty to find out more.

What Happened here in July?

July was an incredible month for student programs. We ended June with our middle school trip to the Student Life camp in Myrtle Beach. We saw many of our students take serious steps in their walk with Christ. We also had a ton of fun! July 3rd-8th we took the high school students to the Boy’s Home in Covington, Virginia. The trip was truly a blessing to me as our students and the residents of the Boy’s Home had so much fun together. It was unbelievable to see as our students were changed from the experience. We were blessed with amazing leaders for both trips! Thank you for your prayer and financial support! Marty O’Rourke—Director of Student Ministries
