The minister and party also inspectedDaweida Bridge on Nabu-Htokawkoe Road. Theminister gave instructions on maintenance of thebridge and preventive measures against erosion ofapproach road and approach structure.

The minister and party went to the site ofHtokawkoe Post-Primary School where Director-General of No 1 Basic Education Department UKyaw Thu reported on construction of the school.

The minister inspected paving roads inHtokawkoe and discussed regional development withnational race leaders in the region.

The minister then presented gifts and fishpaste, dried fish and other rations to local nationalrace leaders and their families.

The government is taking systematic

measures to establish libraries in all the

rural areas where over 70 per cent of the

Myanmar population reside. Libraries are

being opened across the nation with the aim

of cultivating the reading habit among the

rural people and of ensuring the develop-

ment of human resources.

There are altogether 61,949 villages

the length and breadth of the nation. Of

them, 54,707 villages have already been

facilitated with libraries. The successful

opening of such village libraries can be

attributed to the combined efforts of the

government and local people plus the con-

tributions of well-wishers.

The establishment of libraries in all

parts of the nation leads to widening the

scope of knowledge of the national people as

well as ensuring the development of educa-

tion, health and farming sectors of the na-

tion, thereby contributing to enhancing the

intellectual powers of the national people.

This being the case, local authorities,

members of social organizations and the

respective library committees and local resi-

dents are to strive together with the Infor-

mation and Public Relations Department

for perpetual development of the village

libraries.

Herbal treatment may helptreat urinal track infections

WASHINGTON, 8 April—A common herbal extractavailable in health foodstores can greatly reduceurinary tract infectionsand could potentially en-hance the ability of anti-biotics to kill the bacteriathat cause 90 percent ofinfections in the bladder.

Researchers at DukeUniversity Medical Cen-tre, in a series of experi-ments in mice, believethey have also discovered

why many urinary tractinfections in the bladderreturn even after treat-ment with antibiotics.They found that somebacteria hide in cells lin-ing the bladder, wherethey cannot be reached byantibiotics. But they alsofound that forskolin, anextract from the Indiancoleus plant, flushes outhiding colonies of bacte-ria, making them suscep-tible to antibiotic treat-

ment.About 90 percent of

urinary tract infections inthe bladder are caused byE coli bacteria. These in-fections afflict womenfour times as often asmen, and in a large num-ber of cases, the infectionreturns within weeks ofantibiotic treatment. Theresearch was led by Dukemicro-biologist SomanAbra-ham, Ph D, whopub-lished the resultsonline 8 April, 2007, inthe journal Nature Medi-cine. Switzerland is aiming tostart talks to clinch a freetrade agreement withChina, Swiss EconomicsMinister Doris Leuthardsaid on Sunday.

BEIJING, 9 April — Sales of Volkswagen vehiclesrose 23 per cent to a record 202,600 units in China inthe first quarter this year, said sources with VolkswagenChina on Friday.

It was the first time that quarterly sales ofVolkswagen vehicles exceeded 200,000 units in thecountry.

BEIJING, 9 April — Beijing will step up efforts to build a prevention and treatment network forinfectious diseases before the 2008 Olympics, the municipal health authorities pledged on Saturday tomark the World Health Day.

TIRANA, 9 April — Macedonian police seized10.12 kilos of heroin on Saturday night in the country’scapital city, news reaching here from Skopje said onSunday.

Interior Ministry spokesman Ivo Kotevski saidpolice were on the alert when they noticed a red Fordwith Skopje registration plates belonging to anothervehicle around midnight Saturday.

They then called in special police “Alfa” andfollowed the car into a dead end. The driver abandonedthe car and managed to escape from the scene, he said.

Police found on the back seat of the car a largesack full of sweaters imported from Turkey. Afterfurther check, they found 20 packages wrapped in asmany sweaters, each with 0.5 kilo of heroine in it.

By the end of 2007,Beijing will have 1,350hospital beds speciallyprepared for patients whocontract infectious diseases.By the time the Olympicsrolls around in August 2008,the city will have another5,000 hospital beds

prepared for emergencyuse, according to theBeijing Disease Preventionand Control Centre.

In addition, Beijing isexpanding the DitanHospital and You’anHospital, two hospitalsspecially designated for the

treatment of infectiousdiseases. Another 142hospitals have set upoutpatient departments fordiagnozing and treatinginfectious diseases.

According to thecentre, in the past theoutbreak of an infectious

disease might not bereported in Beijing for upto a week. Now, withhealth officials much moreconscious of the need torelease informationpromptly, the delay hasbeen reduced to less thanten hours.

Nineteen medicalteams are receivingtraining to deal withpossible emergencypublic heath problems.

US missile shield inEurope will provoke

new arms race MOSCOW, 8 April—Russia’s Lower House of

Parliament Friday cautioned that the US plans todeploy missile defence shield in Europe will split thecontinent and provoke a new arms race.

“Unilateral decisions related to the deploymentof such elements in the Czech Republic and theRepublic of Poland are groundless from the point ofview of countering potential or imaginary threatsfrom a number of states in the Middle East and theFar East. They have already begun provoking a newsplit in Europe and prompting another round of armsrace,” a unanimously adopted statement by theRussian State Duma said.

During a “thanksgiving education” class, the grade-two students, aged seven to eight, of Qinlinglu PrimarySchool in Zhengzhou, capital of Henan, watched avideo of a Caesarean section operation with theirparents, The Beijing News reported on Saturday.

“It’s a Dracula movie. I was scared,” said a boyafter watching it. Some parents said the scenes were“too bloody” and improper for children to watch.

processing trade companies to export andimport heavy diesel oil and fuel for thefirst time amid rising concern from homeand abroad on the country’s hefty energyconsumption, Xinhua learned Friday fromthe Ministry of Commerce.

Processing trade often involves importof raw materials and export of finishedproducts. Heavy diesel oil can be used forbasic raw material for petrochemicalproducts and fuel are mostly used forgenerating power, transportation vehicles,metallurgy and chemical industry.

China has imported a large amount ofenergy resources, especially petroleum,causing some countries' complaint thatChina’s soaring energy demand led to theenergy price hike in the global market,said Niu Li, economist with the StateInformation Centre (SIC).

Chinese companies have been earninglittle profits from the processing tradeand export from processing tradecontributed to China’s ever-increasingsurplus, which causing trade disputesbetween China and some European andAmerican countries, he said.

According to Customs data, theprocessing trade accounted for 80 percent of China’s trade surplus, of whichforeign-funded enterprises made up anoverwhelmingly large proportion. Thisprohibition list can help China reduceenergy consumption, protect environmentand trim trade surplus, he said.

MST: During the past 24 hours, rain or thundershowershave been widespread in Kachin State, scattered in upperSagaing, isolated in lower Sagaing, Mandalay andTaninthayi Divisions, weather has been partly cloudy inKayin State and Magway Division and genrally fair in theremaining areas. Day temperatures were (3°C) to (4°C)above normal in Shan, Chin and Kayin States, upperSagaing, Mandalay, Yangon, Magway and Bago Divi-sions, (5°C) above normal in Ayeyawady and TaninthayiDivisions, (6°C) below normal in Kayin State and aboutnormal in the remaining areas. The significant day tempera-tures were Minbu, (44°C), Magway and Thayawady (43°C)each and Aunglan (41°C). The noteworthy amounts ofrainfall recorded were Machanbaw (0.79) inch, Putao andKalewa (0.71) inch each, Myitkyina and Kalay (0.24) incheach, Homalin and Mawlaik (0.08) inch each and Bhamo(0.04) inch.

Maximum temperature on 8-4-2007 was 103°F.Minimum temperature on 9- 4 -2007 was 74°F. Relativehumidity at 09:30 hours MST on 9- 4 -2007 was 77%. Totalsunshine hours on 8- 4 -2007 was (9.8) hours approx.

Blair is widely ex-pected to quit in June orJuly after a decade in office.However there is not muchcheer for him.

The poll of 2,034 adultsshowed that many peoplefind the country is a more

dangerous, less happy andless pleasant place to live.

The poll invitedpeople’s opinions rangingfrom their trust in politics,how they feel about theirown lives to whether publicservices have been

improved. However,people gave negativeresponses to almost all ofits 40 questions.

Only over a quarterrated the government’sgeneral performance underBlair as good or very good.

Sixty-one per centdisagreed that Britain was“a more pleasant place tolive” now than in 1997, and58 per cent disagreed thatit was happier, while69 per cent said it wasmore dangerous, the pollshowed.

The poll also showedthat 57 per cent think Blairhas stayed in office too long.

With regard toeducation, 45 per cent ratedthe government’s perfor-mance as poor or very poor,while 60 per cent said thesame about transport.

The Directorate of WaterResources and Impro-vement of River Systemsorganized a ceremony toopen the 6th Meeting onJoint Committee onCoordination of Com-mercial Navigation on theLancang-Mekong RiverAmong China, Laos,Myanmar and Thailandhosted by Myanmar atTraders Hotel on SulePagoda Road thismorning, with an addressby Minister for TransportMaj-Gen Thein Swe.

Also present on theoccasion were DeputyMinister for Transport ColNyan Tun Aung, directors-general of departments andmanaging directors ofenterprises under theministry, delegates fromthe People’s Republic ofChina, Laos, Myanmarand Thailand andmembers and guests.

First, the ministermade a speech on theoccasion, saying that themeeting was the first

on the Lancang-MekongRiver on 27 and 28November 1997. Besides,the delegates met again inYangon for the finaldiscussion on the DraftAgreement on 6 and 7March 2000. Finally, theQuadripartite Agreementof the CommercialNavigation on theLancang-Mekong Riverwas signed in Tachilek,Myanmar on 20 April2000. Smooth and safecommercial navigation on

the river will help bringprosperity, solidarity,sovereignty and mutualbenefits among the sixriparian states. The minister inspected automobile and spare partsand maintenance of power lines. Next, district engineer UThan Tun briefed the minister on power supply of Thazisub-power station.

After inspecting progress in building of sub-powerstation, the minister made arrangements to fulfil theneeds.

Afterwards, the minister and party looked into theproject site of 500 KV main power station (Thabyay) atmile post No 349/2 of Yangon-Mandalay road. Manager-2 U San Tint of Power Supply Project (North) briefed theminister on work being carried out and future tasks.

Next, he gave instructions on timely completionof the project and worksite safety and looked into thesite chosen for construction of the main power station.
