What does it mean to be creave?
At ISM, one of our school‐wide goals for our students is to
be creave. But what exactly is creavity? Do we all have
it? Or do we need to try to ‘be’ it? We asked some people
in our Elementary School community what their thoughts
were…
At last week’s whole school assembly, four of our teachers shared with us what that they do in their lives in order to
be creave. Ms. Monlla loves blogging and she shared her
personal blog with us. Mr. Steve showed us the models he
puts together, paints and designs. Ms. Cha Cruz, a talented
(and famous!) volleyball player, talked about her passion
for her sport and living healthily; and Mr. Smith spoke
about how he creates, plays and shares music with his
band.
Mr. Steve then asked other teachers, and students from
Preschool through to Grade 4, ‘what is creavity?’ These
were some thoughts..
“Creave means something that you’ve never seen before
or something you’ve never made before ‐and with lots of
details.”
“When I think of creavity, the first thing that comes to my
mind is Mathemacs. Being creave in mathemacs is
being able to solve a certain problem in many diff erent
ways. You need to be flexible and think of a lot of diff erent methods in order to solve a problem.”
“You draw something and you don’t know what it is.”
“Coming up with diff erent soluons to a problem.”
“A creave thinker is someone who can think of many ways to do one thing ... and is able to think out of the box.”
“Creavity in PE means creang a roune, a dance, problem solving… how you are going to get around an obstacle
course?!”
“It is something that you create yourself … like if you’re making something yourself.” Con nued on Page 2

“To think about what others haven’t thought of.. or to do things diff erently.”
“When I think of being creave, I think of football. On the field you discover soluons you weren’t even aware you
were discovering. You’re not afraid of mistakes… You get in the mood or the ‘zone’ and creavity funcons
automacally. When you’re really enjoying what you do playing or working with creavity seems much easier.”
“It means that you do things in diff erent ways to other people… or you make things that were invented by yourself.
We are also being creave when we are playing in the playground.”

Message f r om t e Clinic
Dear Parents,
We would like to remind you about the school’s “Sick Day Guidelines”. The enre document can be found on Public Website, but
below two condions which may cause uncertainty among parents more oen than others:
Pinkeye or Conjuncvis – This can be caused by viruses, bacteria or allergy. There may be redness, swelling, itchiness, discharge
and puffiness. A student with these symptoms should not come to school but should visit his/her doctor to see if anbioc drops
are necessary. The school requests a medical cerficate of clearance by the aending pediatrician or ophthalmologist before the
student can return to school, as this condion can be extremely contagious.
Rashes and Skin Infecons – They are most oen caused by bacteria or viruses, which can be passed to others easily. The school
requests a medical cerficate of clearance by the aending pediatrician or dermatologist before the student can return to school.
Every student found with pinkeye or rashes should be sent to the clinic immediately. We will call the parents to collect their child
at the clinic.
Please let me know of any further quesons or concerns.
