For your viewing pleasure, Peepolykus (No Wise Men, The Hound of the Baskervilles) proudly present Gustave Flaubert’s masterpiece Madame Bovary. The seminal nineteenth Century novel will be brought spectacularly to life by our artistic director Madame Bodinetz and her ‘bijou’ cast (with a fair amount of doubling).

Laugh and cry in equal measures as Emma Bovary chooses the wrong husband. Lose yourself in mesmeric love scenes featuring a stupendous collection of devastatingly handsome men. Question the impotence of women in a Victorian patriarchal society, if you want. Marvel at how many parts a Spanish man with limited English can play with only one moustache. There will be vermin, visual absurdity, wild animals and a nun.

Can the cast of five rise to the ridiculous challenge they have set themselves? It’s going to be hilarious. And bloody serious. Possibly.

Collaborating with award-winning poet Simon Armitage, Told by an Idiot, National Theatre of Scotland and Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh present a wildly comic and provocative piece of music theatre.

Edinburgh; a cold town on the edge of civilisation, in very much the Year of Our Lord, 1696. The church has spies everywhere. Here, you keep your counsel and choose your words with care... unless you are Thomas Aikenhead, a loud-mouthed, smart-arsed and likable student at the university. A man in the wrong place at absolutely the wrong time... trouble is brewing for Thomas.

“It is dangerous to be right in matters where established men are wrong”(Voltaire, 1752)

A rich vein of black humour is exploded in this account of the last person in Britain to be executed for blasphemy. Using Told by an Idiot’s internationally celebrated theatrical invention, we glimpse into Edinburgh’s dark past to reveal this true story with universal resonance. A riotous and unsettling drama which swings between 1696 and the present day, I Am Thomas is performed with an original live score.

“Told by an Idiot are the most exciting, enthralling and energising presence in British Theatre”

Carol Ann Duffy, Poet Laureate

William Golding’s 20th century classic Lord of the Flies explodes onto the stage in a remarkable production direct from London’s award-winning Regent’s Park Theatre.

When a group of schoolboys survive a catastrophic plane crash, what starts as a desert island adventure quickly descends into a struggle for survival in a darkly sinister world of superstition and immorality.

Playing to capacity audiences during its original run, this acclaimed production is guaranteed to grip from start to finish.

“Never before, in the entire history of theatre, has so much of the truth of black people’s lives been seen on the stage”James Baldwin

The Younger family are living in a small apartment that fit them when they were half their number: their hopes, dreams and aspirations on hold for years within the four walls and around the kitchen table. But when a chance to change the course of their future emerges, the pressures of opportunity threaten to overwhelm them.

A ferocious portrayal of working class life on the cusp of the civil rights era, Lorraine Hansberry’s landmark drama bursts with intense family conflict, racial politics and social consciousness.

Young Everyman Playhouse presents

The Environmentalists

A WORLD WITHOUT BREAD.

The only thing you can have with everything

Without it

We’d be healthier

Reduced obesity

And then we’d be hungry

No sandwiches

No pizzaNo cheese on toast

No last supper for Jesus

He wouldn’t have been able to feed the 5000

We couldn’t feed ducks

Or pigeons

Bakeries would be out of business

No British bake off

Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry would be homeless and struggling to survive

No French loaves

No use for Jam and butter

Bread would never have been filmed

This list would not exist without the existence of bread

Wheat farmers would just be farmers

We’d all miss out on the Warburton’s advert

But those who are gluten intolerant wouldn’t

Toasters would be pointless

Sausage rolls would no longer be rolled

Beans on….?

No bread – no hope

Without it we’ll be toast

The world is dying, we’re ignoring it.

So with this in mind we’re making a show.

But don’t worry it won’t be preachy.

So expect an unexpected take on the environment,

Like this poem about bread…

“I have always wanted that which I cannot have.”

When William Shakespeare’s daughter is publicly accused of adultery with her neighbour, her husband chooses to stand by her, suing her accuser for slander. In doing so, their lives fall under the glare of intense public scrutiny in this emotional thriller, based upon real events from Stratford-upon-Avon in the summer of 1613.

A powerful exposé of the contradiction between human desire and social convention which seeks to repress it, Peter Whelan’s moving and uplifting play provides a beautiful evocation of life in Shakespearian England. It was first produced to great acclaim by the Royal Shakespeare Company before transferring to the West End and Broadway.

A Caribbean slave ship, a Liverpool bookshop. Sometimes silence is not an option.

By turns brutal, funny and heartbreaking, this one-man show recalls a time when Josh was living a double life – working at an ad agency by day, and as a drag queen by night – battling alcoholism and desperately trying to make his relationship work with Jack, a high-class, crack addicted rent boy.

Mark Thomas: TrespassTrespass carries on from where Mark’s previous show 100 Acts of Minor Dissent left off. It is his usual odd mix of theatre, stand up, activism, a dash of journalism and dollop of mayhem.

Mark asks the question: If the ramblers of the 1930’s were here now what would they do to open up the cities? How do we turn the skyscrapers and corporate squares into our playgrounds? He sets out to try and carve a small space in the urban world where mischief and random chance can lurk.

No one knows where this show is going to end up.
