ARTIST TALK WITH ROBERT MCFARLANE

Rober t McFarlane is one of Australia’s most prolif ic photo journalists, whose image archive reveals an instinct for repor tage without ever gravitating towards the hard news and frontline dramas. As Gael Newton, Curator of Photography at the National Gallery of Australia describes, he focuses on the dignity and integrity of an individual.

The exhibition features 90 images that begin with his early works in Adelaide of the late 1950s and early 60s showing the emerging youth music scene and the inf luence of the new style of photo journalism as seen in the great picture magazines of the era Life, Look and Esquire.

Local ar tist Fiona Kennedy-Altoft presents large scale paintings that she describes as por traying the free, crazy and playful side of life with children.

She has transposed the features of dogs and birds into people, for she feels they are similar in many ways; ‘they are instinctive, affectionate, wild, disobedient, compliant and at times blindly loyal.’

Fiona began work on this series par tly as a ref lection on her role as a parent. Rediscovering the fearlessness, mischief, pranks and laughter are all possible when relating to your children and these exuberant works capture those emotions.
