Mom was a Bargain Hunter Extraordinaire…
At our house, “back to school” meant clothes shopping! I’ll never forget the year that we all got the same red dress from the sale rack - what a teasing we got from the kids at school. We looked like the Von Trapp Family Singers, but without the great voices. When Mom was on a mission to make a buck go far, there was no stopping her.
It is difficult for Mom now. I watch her struggle to write checks and balance her checkbook. She gets upset about the smallest tasks, like following directions to her favorite cookie recipe, and confused when driving or pulling together an outfit for church. The early signs of memory loss can be difficult to understand and more difficult to admit.
If you have concerns, visit Áegis Living with your parent. We are the trusted senior living provider, specializing in memory care and assisted living. Our community provides the finest care given by the most committed staff.
Come in for a tour. We’ll help you understand what memory loss is and how your parent can thrive and enjoy life at Áegis.

Assisted Living & Memory Care Communities
Offer help with non-medical as-pects of daily activities in an at-mosphere of separate, private liv-ing units. In addition to providing meals, transportation for medical appointments, activities and plea-sure trips, assisted living may sup-ply: linens and personal laundry service, assistance with dressing and bathing, reminder regarding medication, and assistance with eating, transferring to and from a wheelchair, toileting, etc. The best candidate for assisted living is someone who needs help with daily activities, but doesn’t need ‘round the clock’ skilled nursing care. The ideal facility provides services and personal assistance in a group set-ting that helps its resident’s lead active, healthy lives. In many cases, assisted living commu-nities offer extensive services for early stage Alzheimer’s disease patients. Private pay rates vary depending on care and services needed. A physician’s approval is required for admission.
Alzheimer’s and Memory Care Communities Alzheimer’s is a progressive, degenerative disease that attacks the brain, resulting in impaired memory, thinking and behavior. It is only one of several forms of dementia. Alzheimer’s care communities are special units or free-standing communities de-signed to sensitively care for those with Alzheimer’s or memory related
disorders. These communities offer safe and secure residential care for those who need 24-hour assistance. Other senior living environ-ments may be appropriate for residents in ear-ly, or even mid stages of the disease. However, unless they have a specialized dementia unit, transfer from another facility will be required as the disease progresses. A family’s private re-sources or long- term care insurance generally funds Alzheimer’s care communities.

Historic FiFtH street scHool coNtributes to revitAlized dowNtowN
By Michael Clark Thanks to Zappos.com CEO Tony Hsieh and a group of passionate activ-ists, downtown Las Vegas continues its revitalization. The City of Las Vegas also deserves recognition for its cultural contri-bution at the Historic Fifth Street School. The former Las Vegas Grammar school and its site were both listed on the Na-tional Register of Historic Places in 1988. Then in 2008, after four years’ work and nearly $15 million from the Las Vegas Redevelopment Agency, the restored site opened as a center for cultural organiza-tions. “Today, the former school serves as a cultural oasis in the heart of down-town Las Vegas,” declared Courtney Mooney, a City historic preservation offi-cer. Besides hosting several arts and architectural orga-nizations, the school’s ven-ue is an excellent location for live music and stage performances. Budget-conscious se-niors will be pleased at the modest admission price for most events. On Friday, February 22 folk legend Pe-ter Yarrow will perform at 8pm. Yarrow’s fame began in the early 1960s when he joined with Mary Travers and (Noel) Paul Stookey to form “Peter, Paul and Mary.” Yarrow’s song writing helped create some of Peter, Paul & Mary’s most famous songs. Or you might consider taking the grand-kids for a stage performance of “The Little Engine That Could” on Satur-day, March 9. Admission is only $3. Hawaiian music fans can enjoy a per-formance by world famous musician Kau-makaiwa Kanaka’Ole on Saturday, April 13. Advance tickets for this performance are $10.
“The Historic Fifth Street complex offers common areas for public or pri-vate functions including the multi-purpose performance area/auditorium, gallery space, open courtyards and the 16,000-square-foot outdoor Centennial Plaza,” Mooney noted. The City of Las Vegas Cultural Affairs Division shares space with other tenants including the UNLV Fine Arts Program and the Nevada School of Architecture. When the school was built in 1936, Las Vegas Boulevard was known as Fifth
Street. The original archi-tects, Orville L. Clark and George K. Thompson, de-signed and built the Mis-sion/Spanish Revival-style building to serve as the city’s first permanent gram-mar school. Originally, it was named the “Fifth Street School.” The school closed in 1966 and over the following years it was used by both Clark Country and the City of Las Vegas for municipal offices.
Senior United States District Judge Lloyd W. George, one of Nevada’s most prominent citizens, attended Las Vegas Grammar School. The George family home was at 1006 So. 3rd Street, a short walk away. “Charleston was a dirt road and 3rd was gravel,” the Judge recalled. “Originally, the school was a block lon-ger to the north,” the distinguished jurist explained. The Foley Federal Building & U.S. Courthouse now occupies that site. A railroad grant had put the property into City hands, but with the provision that it be used for educational purposes. Judge George thought the original parties in-volved in the land grant would be pleased to see how things turned out.

Health
Have you ever thought about seeing a chiropractor but decided not to because you had some doubts or concerns? Someone you know may have shared their experiences with seeing a doctor of chiro-practic. Or, maybe you have heard some stories about chiropractors. As a chiropractor, please al-low me to tell you a little about chiropractic care. First, let me as-sure you that chiroprac-tors are not here to replace your family physician or any other specialist that you may need. In fact, I will often confer with your other doctors on a regular basis to insure that you are getting the best care for your needs and that all of your doctors are kept “in the loop” regarding your treatment and condition. Chiropractors are experts at treating the spine and nervous system to ensure that the spine is free of any nerve pressure that can affect the body. Nerve pressure can cause pain, numbness, pins and needles, weakness in the arms and legs, and can also affect your overall health because the nervous system controls and coordinates all of the functions of your body. In my twenty- four years of prac-tice, many patients have told me that their irregular bowel movements have become regular since their lower back pain has gotten better. They also commonly report that the elimination of their neck or back
pain has resulted in increased strength in their arms and legs and that their head-aches have gone away. And, I frequently hear that patients can move their necks more freely, so they drive more safely and with less discomfort. Chiropractic care
will effectively treat whip-lash from car accidents and chronic pain, as well as other injuries. Arthritis and diabetic neuropathy (nerve pain re-sulting from diabetes) have also responded well to chi-ropractic care. This is not to say that chiropractic is a cure to either condition, but treatment of both of
these conditions in my practice has given patients tremendous relief. Chiropractors use many differ-ent treatment techniques which are cus-tomized to the individual patient’s needs and are really quite gentle. Sometimes a chiropractic adjustment, which involves a gentle movement of a specific vertebra of the spine, is all that is required to help a patient. Exercise and physical therapy modalities are used to help certain condi-tions as well. As a chiropractor, I want you to be in the best of health and free of pain. I am always here to help you with any ques-tions or concerns you may have. Please feel free to give me a call any time so I can help you personally, or with the needs of a loved one .

Health
Tingling. Itchiness around the mouth. Tightness and soreness. If you’re a cold sore sufferer, these are symptoms with which you are all too familiar. These feel-ings mean that a cold sore is on its way. And, if you’re part of the 40 percent of people that suffer from cold sores, you know that you have to start treatment right away. It’s never too soon to say ‘see you later’ to that pesky friend. Cold sores, which are caused by a vi-rus, can be brought on by many factors including stress, fatigue, and exposure to sun, wind or cold. With so many triggers, it may be difficult to understand when or why you’re getting cold sores. As such, it may be a good idea to keep a log of what you were doing, how you were feeling, and what happened in your life just before an outbreak occurred. You may just find a
pattern that can help monitor flare-ups. Beyond monitoring the breakouts, try treating cold sores with Orajel™ Single Dose Cold Sore Treatment. With this rev-olutionary product, healing begins with one dose.
