increased to 72. The students were divided into

two batches and parallel sessions were

conducted. The third day witnessed 92 students

and the fourth day, 94 students. On the fifth

The Hon. Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. N. Siva

Prasad and the Resident Director, Shri DVVS

Varma unequivocally supported the workshop

financially and logistically. As this program

received huge participation, the Hon. Pro Vice-

Chancellor graciously announced a two-hour

morning sports program for a fortnight in the

University playground in which interested

students could participate (the logistics of

which are under discussion at the time of the

report submission). He also explained about

Swachha Bharat and invited the students to

Negotiating Spaces: English Literature and

Language Teaching

Two-Day National Conference 29 & 30

August 2019

Conference Report

The Two Day National Conference on

Negotiating Spaces: English Literature and

Language Teaching organized by the

Department of English, GITAM, Hyderabad

Campus commenced formally on 29th August,

2019.

In his opening remarks, Dr. T. Joseph Ratna

Jayakar, Convenor expressed that the theme of

the conference had been conceived in the light

of the technological advancements, changing

lifestyles and varying perceptions of the

stakeholders. He articulated that the

deliberations would open up spaces and offer

new methodologies for practical insights to

English literature and language teaching in the

classrooms.

The Hon. Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. N. Siva

Prasad presided over the inaugural ceremony

and spoke on the importance of time and space,

a concept from Physics, as an engaging issue in

the teaching of modern English Literature and

Language and the need for Language

laboratories introduced by AICTE. He also

stated that technology and the fast-growing

culture is changing English language and

meanings. He wished the participants to bring

out the best teaching and learning inputs.

Speaking on the Future of Humanities, Prof. D.

Venkat Rao, HoD – Department of Literature,

EFLU, explained at length on the spaces to be

Page 8: English Language Association of India July-September 2019eltai.in/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/ELTAI... · Vocabgrabber. Students were happy to learn English Language by using these

8

negotiated by teachers and researchers in

Literature. He stated that with the impact of

new technologies and changing lifestyles, there

is a need to teach literature in a non-European

way. He conveyed concern that the roots of

research are changing, and there is a danger

that telecommunication language will displace

discourse.

He shared his views that the Apex bodies are

contemplating the introduction of Liberal Arts

courses in the Universities. He opined that the

attitude of cultural inferiority internalized due

to colonial way of thinking should cease and our

traditional culture and identity should be

accepted to establish the fact that education in

humanities is for the future of all human beings.

On the same note, Dr. K Suneetha Rani, Plenary

Speaker from the Centre for Women’s Studies,

University of Hyderabad, spoke on Gender

Studies which are falling across academic

disciplines. She explained that there is a

tendency to undermine women’s studies from

all institutions as having some feminist

goals. The introduction of Choice Based Credit

System, she said, is leaving students in a conflict

of interest. Though there are various

parameters of CBCS in Higher Education to

promote borderless and interdisciplinary

studies, she exemplified that students are not

well motivated towards Gender Studies.

The plenary Speaker for Day 2, Prof. D. Murali

Manohar, HoD - Department of English,

University of Hyderabad, presented some

fascinating insights into the Design and

Development of curricular products for Higher

Education. Dr. Manohar expressed deep concern

and spoke extensively on the need for the

curriculum to be evaluated from time to time as

it sets the goal to students’ learning for career

and beyond. He commented that if students are

given credits based on their choice of subject,

course, content and the hours of teaching for a

single semester, the learning outcome of the

students will not help them achieve their goals

towards global education. In conclusion, Prof.

D. Murali Manohar voiced that the English

Departments should not suffer lateral and

vertical segregation.

Delivering his valedictory address, Prof. T. Vijay

Kumar, HoD, Department of English, Osmania

University, defined that in the backdrop of

changing technologies, negotiating space

interactions and behaviors in Literature

undeniably calls for a critical discussion. He

shared some profound reflections on real and

unreal spaces. Outlining physical and historical,

indigenous, diasporic spaces in the Literatures

of the world, Prof. Vijay Kumar focused on the

Cultural spaces in the Post-Colonial period. The

notion of cultural space is the fourth space

which people shared in urban spaces. Prof.

Vijay Kumar explained that the present-day

society had moved away from real areas to

unreal spaces. Quoting Foucault's three

imaginary spaces namely, utopia, dystopia, and

Page 9: English Language Association of India July-September 2019eltai.in/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/ELTAI... · Vocabgrabber. Students were happy to learn English Language by using these

9

heterotopia, he said, they link with each other

but contradict the real spaces of society.

The program concluded with a vote of thanks

proposed by Dr. Prasanna Laxmi, Convenor of

the Two- Day National Conference.

Out of 45 participants who registered, 20

attended the conference. The conference

collected Rs.40,000/- through registration fee

and incurred Rs. 85,000/- as expenses. A book

of abstracts was published and a book of

proceedings will be published shortly.

A total of 16 papers (including joint papers)

were presented on the two days on diverse

topics by delegates from Tamil Nadu,

Uttarpradesh, Karnataka and Telangana. Four

III year students of GITAM were given an

opportunity to present their papers. Though

many presenters remained absent, a positive

feedback was received from the delegates who

were present.
