Coming down David Silver, of Silver Brothers, uses an excavator Wednesday on the last day of demolishing 202/204 North Market. In December, Hoopeston City Council approved a $6,970 bid from Silver Brothers to tear down the multi-story building, which had served as com-mercial space, then apartments before deteriorating and becoming a dangerous building. Silver Brothers’ bid was significantly less than two other bids received, each for more than $24,000. The demolition, which started February 6, drew interest as neighbors and passers-by stopped to watch the building come down bit by bit.

Democrat debate set The Vermilion County Democrat Par-ty is sponsoring a Candidate Debate for Democrat candidates for Congress in IL-15: Kevin Gaither, John W Hursey, Jr., Craig Morton, and Erika C Weaver. The debate will be held from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday in the Bremer Center at Dan-ville Area Community College, 2000 E. Main, Danville County Board member Phearn Butler will moderate. Residents of Congressional District 15 and the entire public are invited and welcome to attend. The 15th Congres-sional District consists of 33 Illinois counties including all of Vermilion and most of rural Champaign County. The debate will commence with intro-ductions, followed by opening state-ments from the candidates. The modera-tor will then ask them 10 to 12 questions covering topics such as health care, economy, environment, labor relations, whistleblowers, violence, and foreign policy. The audience will be encouraged to submit questions. Refreshments will be available.

by Vermilion County Sheriff’s deputies. Charges are pending in Vermilion and Iroquois counties against a Rossville man following an accident at 12:20 p.m. Friday in the 500 block of East Main. Police said Jeremiah Smith, 39, entered a 2007 Grand Prix without permission. Alleging Smith was trying to elude officers, police reported that Smith backed into a parked 2006 BMW, owned by Riley C. Watson, 26, of Hoopeston. Smith was taken into custody; the Grand Prix was found in Iroquois County.
