Mrs. Laci’s Class: We are reading Freak the Mighty and we highly recommend that you read it. We are studying coelenterates in Science - it's ok if you had not heard of them because we hadn't either. However, a coelenterate is an animal like a jellyfish or coral. In English, we are writing a letter to a marine in boot camp.

7/8 Grade

Mrs. Sellers-Evans Reading/Language In my language classes, students will be writing Thanksgiving essays and studying about clauses and types of sentences. After that, they will be learning punctuation rules, especially how to use commas. In reading my students are beginning a new unit about people who have overcome obstacles. We are just beginning The Miracle Worker, a play about Helen Keller, and will also be reading about others who faced and overcame obstacles.

8 th Grade Reading/Language Mrs. Leigh In eighth grade reading, after reading "The Tell-Tale Heart" by Edgar Allen Poe, students have assumed the role of either the defense attorney or state's attorney and have written closing arguments to either excuse the murderer by reason of insanity or prove the murderer's guilt. Several students will then deliver their text-

Also in reading, students have chosen a fairy tale to retell according to one character's point of view. Some examples are "Humpty Dumpty" from the wall's viewpoint, "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" from the wolf's viewpoint, "Cinderella" from the stepmother or slipper's viewpoint, "Jack and Jill" from the pail's viewpoint, "The Tortoise and the Hare" from the hare's viewpoint, etc. Students will then read and enjoy their classmates' wo

8 th Grade Math Mr. Packard

Our 7th grade math students have been working hard on their FRACTIONS!  We are currently in the middle of a chapter in which we are converting, adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing rational numbers (mostly fractions).  I've been very impressed with what they already know/understand (thank-you fifth/sixth grade teachers)!

Our 8th grade math students have been working on graphing linear functions.  They've learned several different ways to do this.  One class took a test recently on this and did fantastic!  A few of my other classes are digging even deeper into these linear functions, and have started out the chapter great!  We even played an old-fashioned game of Battleship with these linear functions to make things competitive and interesting.

HistoryMrs. Edwards

7th grade History is currently studying the American Revolution.  When finished with chapter six the students will start studying how our constitution was set up and our first government.  Included will be the formation of the Executive branch, the legislature, and the Supreme Court.  As the chapter continues the students will learn about the

formation of political parties and its effects on our government.

8th grade History is currently studying the Great Depression.  After the completion of chapter 23 we will start World War 2. The students will learn both the causes and effects of the war, the rise of Hitler, the attack on Pearl Harbor, and the fall of  both countries and their governments.  After World War 2 the 8th graders will begin a unit on the Holocaust.  As part of the unit, each student is required to read Holocaust books and earn ten AR points.  This will count as a test grade for them.

Sixth graders are working on their Live Wax Museum project which they will present in the MPR on December 4th.Mr. Click's Reading classes just finished the novel, When You Reach Me, and are making Town Models to go with the book. Next, sixth graders will be reading A Wrinkle in Time Graphic Novel. All students should remember about Mr. Click's Board Game Club on Mondays. Even if students haven't signed up yet, they still can by seeing Mr. Click for a permission slip.

Mouse, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas are all excellent tales to boost your family’s holiday spirit.

Go to a tree farm to locate the perfect Christmas tree. At home, decorate it as a family or let the kids do their thing. Have some treats and hot cider or cocoa on hand to keep energy levels up!

Create a holiday playlist that your family listens to in the car or at home. Don’t forget classics like ‘White Christmas,’ ‘I’ll Be Home For Christmas,’ and ‘the 12 Days of Christmas.’

Use an advent calendar to count down to Christmas. There are many varieties of advent calendars, from candles that are burned daily to boxes you open daily.

Set aside one night each week to watch a holiday movie or television special, such “Miracle on 34th Street” and “A Charlie Brown Christmas.”

Have your child start an ‘I Am Thankful’ list. Have him add one thing he is thankful for each day. You can turn this into a decoration by having him write it on a paper Christmas tree or snowflake that you then hang across the fireplace or some other area. Purchase or make a holiday ornament for each child every year. This is a great reason to reminisce during holiday decorating.

Enrichment GroupsThere are several enrichment groups the 5/6 graders can choose to participate in if they are not receiving extra help in reading or math during the week. One of the options is newsletter, which the kids email teachers/staff and ask if they have any information they would like to add to the newsletter, during one of our off days of emailing and responding I had the kids write on a leave what they are thankful for and we made a thankful tree on my door, Another options is origami, taught by Ms.
