Support all Catholic Education: “Great Beginnings last a lifetime.”

Time seems to be flying by. It was just Thanksgiving and now we have already entered the First Sunday of Advent. In the Gospel Lesson for today, Jesus is warning us to not let the events of our daily living take our focus off of Jesus. A long time ago there was a Brady Bunch episode that used this line: “When you least expect it; expect it.” I don’t remember the episode, except there was revenge involved, but the line always stuck in my mind as truthful. “As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. In those days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark. They did not know until the flood came and swept them away... Stay awake! At an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come” (MT 24:37-44). How do we stay awake? The verse: “They did not know until the flood came and swept them away” is important. We live in a time of many floods, perhaps not “literally”, but surely “figuratively.” These floods are emotionally charged experiences that invoke a “knee-jerk” reaction from us. Poverty, crime, politics, social interaction, employment, marriage and family, and many other topics can bring about hostile and unhappy thoughts. If we allow them, they can be a flood that sweeps us away. It is important to stay focused on Jesus. We are born unhappy. The first thing we need is nourishment. From our first moments of life we are needy. Unless we are grounded in Jesus and truly want to be His, we run the risk of being swept away by these floods that seemingly spring out of nowhere. On the First Sunday of Advent, Jesus seems to be saying, “Stay rooted in Me, because when you least expect it- expect it!” Dear Jesus, you are the hope in our messy world. This Advent, help us slow down, listen to your voice, and focus on what’s really important. We place our hope in you as we prepare our hearts to celebrate your birth on Christmas. Amen.
