Holy is the Week

by Ann Weems Holy is the week… Holy, consecrated, belonging to God… We move from hosannas to horror with predictable ease of those who know not what they do. Our hosannas sung, our palms waved, let us go with passion into this week. It is time to curse fig trees that do not yield fruit. It is time to cleanse our temples of any blasphemy. It is time to greet Jesus as the Lord’s Anointed One, to lavishly break our alabaster and pour perfume out for him without counting the cost. It is a time for preparation… The time to give thanks and break bread is upon us. The time to give thanks and drink of the cup is imminent. Eat, drink, remember: On this night of nights, each one must ask, as we dip our bread in the wine, “Is it I?” And on that darkest of days, each of us must stand beneath the tree and watch the dying if we are to be there when the stone is rolled away. The only road to Easter morning is through the unrelenting shadows of that Friday. Only then will the alleluias be sung; only then will the dancing begin.

Blessed Is He Who Comes in he Name of the Lord

Today we celebrate the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. The crowds waved palm and

olive branches as Jesus rode into the city on a colt. They welcomed him as royalty, so moved were their hearts in faith and trust of God. Yet, while Christ’s procession into the city is a moment of joy, the joy is fleeting as the coming days lead to the passion and death of Jesus. The central mysteries of our faith that we celebrate this week highlight for us the lengths to which God will go out of love for us. As we journey On Mission for The Church Alive! it is not just our parishes that we should hope to be transformed. We should also hope that our hearts be transformed in love and service of God and others. How are we called to be ambassadors of Christ, coming in his name to share the life and light of God with everyone we meet? On Mission invites us to be representatives of Christ before others that they may know his loving work in the world today. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.

Coins on a Gravestone: What Does It Mean?

Have you ever seen a gravestone covered in coins? It’s not unusual while visiting a cemetery to see the stones covered in various amounts of money. So what’s that all about? According to legend, the coins belong on the gravestones of U.S. military veterans. Visitors who wish to show their respect leave coins on the headstones in different amounts. Leaving a penny means you visited and want to thank the veteran for their service. A nickel means you trained at boot camp with the deceased, while a dime suggests you served with him or her. Finally, a quarter signifies you were with the soldier when they passed away. The origin of the tradition, like the meaning behind it, is still up to debate. But many people believe it started in America during the Vietnam war. America was having a crisis of conscience. Leaving a coin was a way to say you appreciate the soldiers service.
