FROM THE HEADMASTER

www.girton.vic.edu.au

It is that transitional time of year when in a single week we have had senior students sitting examinations, information evenings for new Prep parents and prospective parents and children visiting the School

for a Headmaster’s tour.

Senior teachers are busily preparing curriculum for the Early Commencement Programme (ECP), which will see Senior School students move up into their 2018 year level for the remainder of the school year, giving them the best possible start next year.

The Early Commencement Programme (ECP) at Girton is three weeks in duration, allowing students to immerse fully in the subjects that they will study next year and providing a focus at a time of year when productivity might otherwise wane. The ECP provides meaningful work for students and we find that students feel motivated by being with their new teachers and studying new academic content. It also gives students who are undertaking elective subjects for the first time a chance to reflect on whether the subject is right for them.

The annual Sports Presentation Evening held last week, saw a procession of ‘improved’, ‘best’, ‘consistent’ and ‘valuable’ sports people cross the stage to be recognised in front of peers and parents. Details can be found within this edition of eLink. A special and very deserving award was given to Ms Robin Kurrle for her dedication to Girton hockey. A commitment that spans more than two decades and has involved many a freezing evening spent on the field encouraging hundreds of students to be their best.

Schools are full of people so passionate about what they do that they barely recognise the positive impact their individual contribution has to the fabric of the place over time. Ms Kurrle is one of these people and we are grateful indeed for what she has done for so many students on and off the hockey field over the past 25 years.

With the departure at the end of this year of Mr Samuel a’Beckett who leaves us to take up a position at Geelong Grammar School, an important appointment has been made for the Head of House position for Millward commencing in 2018. I am delighted that Mrs Kerrie Stewart will be the new Head of Millward. Mrs Stewart has been at Girton Grammar since 2005. She is currently the Head of Business Studies and the Assistant Head of House for Jenkin. Mrs Stewart has four children who are now Old Girtonians in professional careers and has an intimate understanding of

the model and intent of student wellbeing measures at Girton as well as excellent relationships with many of the students.

It is hard to believe that this is the penultimate edition of eLink for 2017 and that many of our Year 12 students will finish their final examinations this week. The weeks before Christmas will provide the Senior Executive with valuable time for planning, which will be guided by learnings from my recent Harvard University study tour.

Next year marks 25 years since the demise of Girton College and the phenomenal rise of Girton Grammar School, from around 300 students in 1993 to the current enrolment of over 1,100 students. The School sits on a strong foundation of shared values and I look forward to working with my colleagues to innovate for the next 25 years, making sure that we prepare our students for the future with an education that will transcend an ever-changing workforce and that will grow good character for the benefit of future generations.

PARENTSGIRTON GRAMMAR SCHOOL PARENTS’ AND FRIENDS’ ASSOCIATION

The 2018 Girton Fair will be held on Sunday the 22nd of April next year, with plenty of excitement, good food and some fresh attractions.

If your family has a wholesale or retail business, a passion for craft or a great idea for a fun activity, we invite you to consider taking a pop-up shop to add to the atmosphere on the day.

The Girton Fair, now held every second year, generates funds to support major purchases by the school, for our students. In the past, funds raised have bought grand pianos for our wonderful Music Department and marquees for use at swimming and athletics carnivals and other school events.

Next year - the school’s 25th anniversary - will mean the 2018 Girton Fair is even more of a celebration and we would encourage you to take part, either through a stall or helping in the lead up.

Space for our pop-up marketplace is limited so make sure you flag your interest now, without obligation.

For further information, or to reserve a spot for your pop-up shop, please contact Aileen Berry (President) or Paula Saxon (Secretary) through Girton Parents and Friends at ([email protected]).

TCONCERT BAND

Week Five was an exciting time to see the development in the Concert Band programme in both Junior and Senior School.

The BASS programme is nearing the end of rehearsals for 2017, so the Junior Advanced Band combined with the BASS band and along with Mrs Vine, Dr Lichnovsky, Mr Turpie and Miss Hamilton visited the Prep rooms and gave a concert on Wednesday afternoon. The Year 5 & 6 students opened the concert with ‘Variations on Lightly Row’ and then musicians from each section demonstrated how to make a sound and change notes to the preps. The prep students listened intently and answered lots of questions about the instruments. To finish the concert,

the band played ‘Rio Bravo’ and we invited the prep students to stand next to their favourite instrument, so they could hear it and watch it close up. We all thoroughly enjoyed sharing our music with such an appreciative audience.

Our band experience in the Senior School was also exciting with a combined rehearsal of members from Senior Concert Band and Wind Symphony on Tuesday at lunchtime in the Black Box. Senior Concert Band had prepared one of their pieces, ‘Challenger Point’ to play with the more advanced students and it was great to see them play with such confidence and commitment. Wind Symphony played ‘Alice’s Theme’ and ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ inviting Senior Concert Band members to join in where

they felt confident. It was so pleasing to see 60 musicians on Wind, Brass and Percussion instruments from Year 7-11 introducing themselves, playing their instrument to the best of their ability and listening to each other for assistance. Mrs Vine, Mr Martin, Dr Lichnovsky and Mr Turpie were so excited and proud to watch and hear the young musicians working together to play with energy, warmth and dynamism. It was certainly a great example of our Imagine Values:Respect, Inclusion, Trust, Confidence, Excellence displayed in a musical environment.

IMAGINE EXCELLENCE

Recently, Bendigo Braves coach Mr Ben Harvey visited our Junior School to talk about EXCELLENCE. He was invited as part of our community speakers initiative in RULER. Mr Harvey told us about two players and their approaches to excellence which were completely different. His message was that you can be excellent in attitude, effort and endeavour without being the best player on the team. He encouraged us all to strive for excellence on and off the court in all that we attempt. Thank you for taking the time to deliver this wonderful message Mr Harvey.

FORGING ICT NETWORKS

Students from the ICT 3-4 Digital media course again studied the new unit of competency, Install, configure and secure a small office or home office network as part of the new VCAA changes to the ICT curriculum in early 2016.

Students enjoy this unit greatly because of its growing relevance and application professionally for small business, the home and higher studies at tertiary level.

Student’s inquisitiveness and experiences were enhanced by a demonstration tour and explanation of the school’s sophisticated ICT network with assistance from Mr Parry.

FORGING ICT NETWORKS

A simulated real world ICT project scenario has been run successfully for two years now as a major assessment where students have the unique opportunity to work to a design and installation brief from an ICT company, The Curious Incident, based in the Melbourne CBD.

The problem was distance and meeting the CEO, Mr Christopher Haddon so the use of Skype to communicate was used to collapse distance and allow students to converse with Mr Haddon about the brief and present their final designs for consideration.

Mr Haddon and his staff were delighted at the design solutions Girton students presented and took these submissions on board to inform the company of possibilities when considering the strategic expansion of their ICT facilities.

This real simulated exercise with industry feedback and interaction has been invaluable for the students’ learning, development and confidence.

Tech Free Thursday was devised at a meeting of the House Prefects and the RULER team who were growing concerned about a growing number of students using their devices at lunchtime. Believing that education and positive choices rather than punitive action will have a more significant and longer lasting change to behaviour, the idea was to provide some alternative activities and discourage anyone from using an electronic device at lunchtimes on Thursdays. The students organised card games in one room, Dungeons and Dragons in another, and Dodgeball in the gym. It has been a resounding success without a device to be seen over the last few Thursdays, and students from all year groups reminding each other that it is Tech Free Thursday! This initiative may also be trialled on Tuesdays next term …

AHERNE HOUSE DINNER

House Dinner for Aherne House was yet another success. Whilst the theme ‘Glow In The Dark Star Wars’ was unique, it did not fail to please. We were greeted by our house tutors at the door, dressed up as Star Wars characters, as well as Princess Leia, otherwise known as the Aherne Head of House, Ms Brewin. The night kicked off with a mixture of people from different year levels performing the act “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”. The night were full of laughter, photographs and delicious food. Watching the acts were certainly a highlight of the night, with the winning act being the Year 10s rendition of “Car Wash”. It’s fair to say that everyone had a brilliant night. We look forward to what next year’s Aherne House Dinner has in store for us.

JENKIN HOUSE DINNER

With every House Dinner, there is always a theme and this year’s theme for Jenkin house was ‘a bit of bling’. Everyone dressed up suitably for the occasion. Although we see each other every day, it was nice to be able to see my peers outside of school and watch everyone enjoy themselves. It was also wonderful to sit back and enjoy the performances that each year level had prepared to present. Possibly my favourite performance was Year Ten’s dance routine to the song ‘Pump up the Jam’. All of the performances were terrific, the jokes great and as the House of ‘Connectedness’, we all came together for a wonderful evening of fun and festivities for Jenkin House.

JONES HOUSE DINNER

could have any super power, what would it be….?

The House Tutor acts were the highlight of the night as the room filled with laughter each time a new Tutor group took to the stage. We had dancing performances from around the world by the Year 7’s, Year 9’s believing they really were the ‘Fresh Prince of Bel-air’, the Year 10’s performance of ‘Viva la Vida’ featured the mildly popular Spanish Macarena and the Year 11’s spectacular performance of

the other, Russia and Egypt. We had people dress to theme in some amazing costumes and those that didn’t, looked exquisite in their formal attire.

The evening started with a debutante entrance of our graduating students, each Year 12 was called into the room individually and presented to the house along with valuable information about themselves such as; their future aspirations, what they do on the weekends and if they

Fantastisk…..Bellissimo…..Magnifique

Jones House Dinner was a night full of laughter, fun and amazing performances. With the theme of ‘Around the World’ each table was marked by a flag from a different country. The tables centred around hand made hot air balloons from a different country. On one side of the room we had Brazil and to

‘Umbrella’ wowed the audience, especially Mr James. But it was the Year 8’s who stunned the crowd with their polished and precise performance on the Kazoos with a mash-up of all our all time favourite songs, including the school song.

Our departing Year 12’s had nothing but kind-‘ish’ words to say about each other as they looked back on their time here in Jones house. The House was full of laughter as we heard stories of ripped pants, Kris Kringle presents gone wrong, perfect relationships and their best (imaginary) friends throughout the years.

The night was a night of celebrating and recognising what a great year Jones House has had, thanking those involved in creating such a wonderful culture within the House and farewelling our Year 12’s. On behalf of the Jones House students, I say tack så mycket (Swedish), muchas gracias (Spanish), grazie mille (Italian) and thankyou to all the House Tutors for doing a tremendous job this year, Ms Grech and Mr Vernon for leading the House with such dedication and humour and to everyone who was involved in organising, setting up and putting on such a lovely evening.

MILLWARD HOUSE DINNER

Black and White. After dinner, the Year Nines graced the house with a captivating performance of Just Dance’s ‘Where is the Love’ only to have the show stolen by the Year Tens and their Flash Mob. Lucy and Sylvan Rodnight-Blackwood gave a hilarious reading of Clive Palmer’s poems which was then interrupted by the Year 10’s act of Crazy in Love and Millward No.5. The Year 11’s took their Masks off for their performance and played a melodic tune on their recorders as the Year 12’s pushed everyone’s physical ability with their Dance

rapped their way through the song until it was time for the Year 8’s to take the stage. The Year 8’s were a blast from the past as they sang and danced to childhood songs. Ruby Shirres (12M) and Nelson Beks (11M) then gave yet another outstanding performance before dinner was served. Although it was not the RSL, the food was still as delicious as always. The room was filled with laughter and frivolity as everyone lined up to get their picture taken in the photo booth which was a great success especially paired with the theme of the night,

Millward’s Night of Black and White

The night commenced at 5:30 when the students of Millward started to arrive at the Bendigo Club. Photoshoots were held as compliments were exchanged and soon everyone was ushered inside to take their seats. The vice captains, Hally Nyhus (11M) and Kai Andrews (11M), kicked off the night with a small speech before introducing the Year 7’s to be the first act. They alphabetically

Medley. They had everybody up from their seats, including teachers, all breaking a sweat in order to keep up with the medley. It was by far the most entertaining act of the night. Chaise and Perry then gave their thankful and touching speech to the House followed by Ishira Dayananda (12M) and Thomas Morrison (12M) toasting the Year 12’s and all they have experienced from Year 7. Ruby and Nelson were up yet again to perform but this time accompanied by Cara Humphry (12M) and Bronte Bailey (12M), who all gave a beautiful performance. The night ended with the well-deserved toast to the house tutors and Mr A’Beckett’s farewell speech. Mr A’Beckett is and has been a remarkable Head of House of Millward for the last four years. With his idea to start the Manderson Millwardian Award and his constant enthusiasm towards spirit cups and other house activities, he is a Head of House that will not be forgotten and most definitely a hard one to replace. Alex Nielsen (12M) was a very worthy recipient of the Manderson Millwardian Award for Term 3.

Overall the night was an absolute success filled with laughter, stunning performances, and new friendships. It truly was a night to remember.

RILEY HOUSE DINNER

The evening begun with a crowd of Rileyans waiting outside the venue, taking pictures and admiring each other’s fabulous outfits. We all came inside to be seated and were welcomed by Jemma Kulbars and Kayle Thompson. The rest of the night included a heart-warming duet of For Good by Eliza Christie and Alex McCann, accompanied by William McCann, all from Eight Riley. My class, the year eight’s, performed Down Under for our House Tutor act. Year sevens performed Footy Meets Beyoncé, sorry to all the Collingwood fans! Emma Greenall, Si Chi Tong and Anika Weibgen then performed When I Grow Up on piano, clarinet and oboe. The year ten’s then performed Just Dance, Oops I Did It Again. The year elevens performance of Eleven Nation Army was very funny, with different instruments clashing, including maracas, a cow bell and a trumpet made from a hose! The year twelves then told the audience all about their first day at Girton and a bit of advice for the VCE years.

We had lots of opportunities to use the photo booth throughout and the year sevens rightly won the new prize of: ‘who can take the most pictures at the photo booth’! I took lots of photos too with my friends and we took lots of class photos. There was such a happy, fun environment. The food was

It is safe to say we had a ball in Hono-blue-lu this year. Everything was all set for a great night.

The tables were adorned with little umbrellas reminiscent of an island cocktail party, and in the middle of each one sat a real pineapple. The night kicked off with a duet from Alexandra McCann and Eliza Christie, with William McCann on the piano. Throughout the night, speeches and performances, including the house tutor acts, interspersed the food and chatting. Some of these included a rendition of ‘When I Grow Up’ from Matilda the musical for oboe, clarinet and piano, a year nine dance battle, Year ten performing ‘Oops I Did It Again,’ a year seven mockery of Collingwood’s record number of grand final losses, year eleven with ‘Eleven Nation Army’ and year twelve pulling out some final memories from days gone by before the end of the year.

The next section of the night saw us say our farewells to our departing year twelves; they all walked across the stage as the photos of them from their early days of school were displayed on the screen. With the conclusion of this, we were nearing the end of the night, and so with a final speech from our super House Captains, the night drew to a close. Surely a night to remember for all involved.

Noah Lawrence (8R)

delicious and on behalf of Riley I can say that we all enjoyed it. The year elevens and helpers did an amazing job with the setting up. Our theme of Hono-blue-lu was certainly upheld with the blow up palm trees and many flowery necklaces. The Riley House dinner was lots of fun and we all had a wonderful time!

Sophie Ginis (8R)

As we all crowded around in little clusters, excitedly greeting one another with large smiles on our faces, we waited for the doors of The Bendigo Club to open. Throughout the evening each year level treated us to lively and fun performances which had been put together over many hours of hard work leading up to the night itself. The magnificent singers, woodwind players, guitarists and dancers left our whole house touched by music.

All the details of the night melded together to create a memorable evening for everyone. Especially the Year Twelves as this was their final house dinner, concluding all their years at Girton. The organisation and preparation put towards the evening by the students, teachers and The Bendigo Club was greatly appreciated as it rounded out the Hono-Blue-Lu theme.

NOTICE FOR ALL SENIOR SCHOOL ART STUDENTS

• All students who are in an Art class (Called Imagery. Techniques. Analysis, at Years 7-10 and Studio Arts at VCE level) are expected to have an Art kit.

• This is obtainable online from Cavalier Art Supplies.

• Students may source their own Art materials but they must be the same products as listed Online. There is a separate order for each year level.

• This is particularly important for Year Eight students who must have the correct linoleum block and linoleum cutters.

• It is important to have the kits posted to your home address. This will cost $10, and Cavalier will email you when the kit is posted.

• Please order during the Christmas holidays so that your student/s have their Art-kit for their first lesson of 2018

Cavalier will no longer be delivering Art kits to the school for pick up on a specific day. This is contrary to past practice, but it has become necessary because fewer people are coming to collect their art kits on the day that Cavalier sets aside for delivery and collection.

Any queries about the above information should be directed to Cavalier or the Head of Department/Art:[email protected]

The Online Address for ordering ITA and VCE Studio Arts kits is:www.cavalierart.com.au/schools/girton-grammar-school

Farm & Road Safety Expo

Rotary Club of RochesterIncorporated No. A0021076T

6th November 2017

The Principalas addressed by email

Dear Sir/Madam

Safety awareness and prevention of accidents is an ongoing issue in rural areas and of concern to the community as a whole. To this end Farm and Road Safety Expos, under the umbrella of the Rotary Club of Rochester and supported by the Shire of Campaspe, have been held for the past 17 years at the Rochester Recreation Reserve.

The aim of the inaugural committee was to make aware and educate school children and adults on all issues pertaining to road and farm safety. Approximately 1000 students plus teachers and members of the general public attended our 2017 Expo and thoroughly enjoyed themselves while at the same time experiencing the invaluable message of safety on the farm and road.

The 20th annual Farm and Road Safety Expo will be held on Tuesday 21st August 2018 and run on a similar format to past years. This will include interactive activities and static displays in all aspects of safety involving emergency services and organizations. The FARSE Committee are planning to increase the number of exhibitors present with the view of broadening the range of activities available to the students.

Please mark this date on your calendar and consider attending when you are planning the excursions/activities your school will undertake next year. This is an excellent opportunity to help pass on the farm and road safety message to your students.

Further information on the Expo will be sent to you in February and June. If you require information before then please feel free to contact me.

If the attendance, by students and teachers from your school, to the Farm and Road Safety Expo on 21st August 2018 was to save but only one life or injury in your Community, then the excursion was a success.

Please mark the date on your calendar for 2018.

Thanking you for your time and consideration

Yours faithfully

EDUCATIONAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES 2017

Our School’s Pastoral Care system includes my specialised services which include consultancy, counselling and educational assessments for students of all ages in both the Junior and Senior School.

The consultancy services involve regular meetings with the Pastoral Care team throughout the School. Staff present student issues for discussion and support plans are made collaboratively.

Counselling Services may be initiated by parents or staff. This generally involves matters which are complex, and possibly requiring Mental Health Care Plans from General Practitioners. Such issues may include stress management, separation, anxiety, depression and grief.

Educational Psychology assessment work may also be initiated by parents, but may also occur following teacher concerns being expressed to their Head of House, LRC staff or following consultation with myself. Early identification of Specific Learning Difficulties can do much to address student skill levels and to assist them achieving their potential.

Should you require further information or support for any aspect of your child’s social or emotional development, learning or behavioural difficulties, please email me directly on [email protected] or on 0419108460.

Interviews can be made by contacting Mrs. Lorraine Ellis (Monday, Thursday, Friday) on 4408 5937., Ms. Michelle Gilkes (Tuesday) on 4408 5909 or Mrs. Rebecca Doherty (Wednesday) on 4408 5951 .
