Students will travel with Mr MacAndrew and this year will engage in a homestay with students from Sukagawa Toyo High School. The school continues to engage musical paraprofessionals to assist and support students who are keen to extend their musical skills and talents. The Music faculty has managed this program, which is an ideal opportunity for students to hone their musical skills as part of their comprehensive learning while attending Maitland Grossmann High. A shift in population has meant that our timetable will change at the beginning of Term 2. Students will not necessarily retain their current teachers, however we will work to minimise the impact on the students. School uniform standards remain high, however students and parents are reminded that canvas shoes are totally unacceptable footwear for school. When purchasing student footwear this should be taken into account. Skirts worn by junior and senior girls should be a reasonable length and not any shorter than halfway between the thigh and knee. A reminder, that wearing excessive jewellery contravenes the uniform code. Students should only wear one piece of jewellery which is not going to endanger themselves or others (therefore sharp jewellery or dangling earrings should not be worn). The girls have chosen a pair of shorts to add to our uniform. These shorts are available from the uniform shop and are the only style of shorts to be worn as an alternative to skirts and long pants. Please note these do not replace the school skirt/dress or slacks but are available to suit the hot weather and informal occasions. There will still be times when girls are expected to wear their skirt or fitted navy slacks. Dr Di Soltau Principal

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Welcome to the 2019 School Year. I extend a special welcome to all the families new to the MGHS Community. It has been a very busy start to the year, welcoming our Year 7 Students and facilitating their Orientation Program. Congratulations to Year 7 Advisors Ms Byrams and Mr Focic for your unwavering enthusiasm and tireless efforts, ensuring an effective transition for our new students. I appreciated meeting many families during our ‘meet the teachers BBQ’ on 21st February and also enjoyed hearing many exciting stories from Year 7 Camp. I pass on my thanks to Mrs Skinner and her team for organising and operating a highly successful Great Aussie Bush Camp. Our welfare plan for 2019 has seen the introduction of weekly Year Meetings (7-12). These meetings are themed around the pastoral care and targeted welfare needs of each year group. Year Advisors and Deputy Principals collaborate to deliver these positively focused meetings each Thursday morning in specific locations throughout the school. MGHS extends a warm welcome to many new teachers, joining us in 2019. Welcome to Ms Dubois (Teacher Librarian), Ms Saunders (English), Ms Turrell (Maths), Mr McGowan (Science), Mr Gunther (PDHPE), Ms Kronk (TAS), Ms Burnitt (CAPA) and Mr Hartnett (Support Unit). We welcome you and look forward to your involvement in our school community. I also welcome Mrs Crowe (HT PDHPE), who will relieve as Deputy Principal for Years 7 and 11 throughout term 1 as Mr Fara undertakes an important role as Curriculum Advisor for the DET. Staff professional development has been at the forefront of school activities leading 2019. Our first twilight staff professional learning session took place on Monday 25th February, which involved each teacher focusing on student performance in their respective subjects and creating data driven class level plans across the school. Our staff have been highly active in analysing the learning needs of individual students and planning activities to maximise their learning. Furthermore, all faculties have been represented during school planning and mile-stoning focus groups each Friday. Together, the school staff are committed to enacting our 2018 - 2020 school strategic directions: 1) Engaging all students in a future focused learning community which fosters wellbeing 2) Providing quality teaching that is evidenced based, collaborative and personalised 3) Strong, strategic and effective leadership in a culture of high expectations and community engagement

Our school will continue our relationship with our regional Director and Mr Francis Mackay (Team Leader, Health & Safety Directorate) as an outcome of the student and staff forums, which took place in Term 4 2018. The school is in the process of analysing the valuable feedback of staff and students, as we plan structures and initiatives to support all school stakeholders throughout 2019. I will use future newsletters to report our progress to families. I wish to remind families of the strong connection between attendance and school engagement and performance. It is imperative that families and MGHS work together to ensure high expectations regarding attendance. I encourage all families to avoid scheduling appointments during school hours and allowing non-attendance for incidental reasons. If an early departure from school is unavoidable, I remind families that written permission must be shown to Mrs Crowe before 9am. I give a friendly reminder to families about subject and school contributions for 2019. Payment of school contributions go directly towards learning resources for your children. Please remember to pay these contributions when invoices arrive home. As always, if families are

encountering financial difficulties, please contact your relevant Deputy Principal to arrange assistance. I wish Year 11 the best, as they embark on their Preliminary and HSC journey. I wish to reinforce my message of ‘stepping up’ your efforts and responsibilities. As leaders of MGHS, we expect you to always uphold values of our school and public education. We expect you will be exemplary role models for our junior students and work to the best of your ability to achieve the best outcomes for your future. I am looking forward to an exciting and progressive 2019. Josh Gane (Deputy Principal)

Uni Roadshow 4/3/19 Year 12

Welcome back to a new year which promises to be a busy and inspiring one for students, filled with opportunities. We kicked off the year with the ‘Uni Road Show’ on the 4th of March in the MGHS Hall. This program is designed to give Year 12 students who are interested in the university option the opportunity to talk to Uni representatives from Charles Sturt, Newcastle, New England and Southern Cross Universities. These universities are here to inspire students and give information about the application process and ‘life’ as a potential uni student. In Year 12 students need to arm themselves with as much information as possible to support them in their post school options.

Money Talks 27/3/19 Year 11 Maths Standard 1 & 2

Looking forward we also have ‘Money Talks’ which is to be held periods 1-3 in MGHS Hall on the 27th of March. This program is targeted at Maths Standard 1 & 2 students to support them with financial literacy. There will be representatives from the banking and private sector discussing saving options, general banking, budgeting and loans. This is a very relevant program to inform students and arm them with financial education before they leave school.

Seize the Day 3/4/19 Year 11

On the 3rd of April, Year 11 will also be participating in a compulsory wellbeing day called ‘Seize the Day’. This day is designed to support and inform students with strategies for studying, time management, UAC and TAFE information and wellbeing advice. The cost of this day is $40, to be paid at the front office, any family who may find it challenging to meet this cost, please let us know and we can support you. Year 11 students have been issued with an information/permission note at their year meeting. I have also emailed the note to Year 11 at their school email account in case of note misplacement. Any student who needs another hard copy note can see myself in E304 or their Year Advisors in the Science staffroom.

Charles Sturt University ‘Explore Day’ 9/4/19 Years 11 & 12

On the 9th April we will be taking a bus load of interested students to the Charles Sturt University ‘Explore Day’ at their Port Macquarie campus. After completing statistics for where our students apply to study, CSU is their second university of choice (University of Newcastle is the first, of course) so I considered it beneficial to offer this opportunity. If your son or

daughter is in Year 11 or 12 and interested in this excursion please ensure they return the relevant paperwork and the $20 travel fee to the front office no later than Wednesday 3rd April.

Lastly I recommend that both students and parents familiarise themselves with the https://mghscareers.com/ website. Students, if they haven’t already need to click on the link provided and then go to the ’for students’ tab on the top right of the screen and register. This will allow them to access information that will support them in numerous areas; from the how to ‘create a resume’ support tool to a calendar of events that includes all university and TAFE open days. This website also advertise any vacancies for students interested in leaving school and gaining part time/full time jobs, apprenticeships and/or traineeships. Further, there is a ‘for parents’ tab which is loaded with information about supporting you child with career planning etc.

Music News CAPA has had a very busy start to this year and we would like to thank everyone who has supported our extracurricular activities. Choir, Concert Band and Ensembles have all started and we are pleased by the large number of students who are contributing to the traditions of our school. If any students are still interested in participating in one of these successful activities please speak to either Mrs Alford or Mr Forbes in the Music department.

Organisation for 2019 Music Ensembles • Concert Band – Wednesday morning • Choir and Vocal Ensemble – Friday lunchtime

Band Tutoring At the end of 2018 in association with the National Music Academy™ Mr Forbes coordinated a band day, collaborating with our partner primary school. Tutors worked across a range of music disciplines providing instruction and building skills.

Throughout 2019 the National Music Academy™ will be working with MGHS Music staff to provide ongoing tutoring to build diversity and depth across the range of ensembles. Following the great opportunity provided in 2018, MGHS Music will be collaborating with NMA to provide targeted tuition for band members. This opportunity to participate in Peripatetic Lessons has allowed students to further develop their skills to build strength in their musical performances and musicianship. Lessons have been allocated by Mr Forbes and will run on a Thursday, during Periods 7 & 8. We will keep you posted about this exciting opportunity to have lessons with an outside provider in your selected instrument.

Instrument Hire Students are able to arrange the hire of instruments through the Music department. Hire fees are $30 per term. Drama in the Studio Excursion & Ensembles 2019 sees a change in the Drama Department with Mrs Holz on leave this year and Mrs Burnitt arriving from HSPA and the Young People’s Theatre – Artistic Director. A seasoned performer and experienced teacher we are excited to have Mrs Burnitt working with us and already there are some great opportunities for the keen actors with Stage 4 and Stage 5 Ensembles.

Theatresports has taken off at Maitland Grossmann with three teams (one Year 8 team, two mixed 9/10 teams) meeting every Monday lunchtime in the drama room to hone their skills in preparation for a state wide Theatresports competition. Year 10 Drama are also consolidating their Shakespeare studies in English through their study of Elizabethan Theatre in Drama and are preparing for Regional Shakespeare finals to be held at HSPA in term two. We have also introduced the "Growth Mindset' philosophy in Year 10, this encourages students to focus on the process of learning rather than just the end product. This mindset encourages resilience and creative risk taking in the class room. Year 11 have been working enthusiastically on "play" based skills which form the basis of HSC Group Presentation. Verbatim has occupied Year 12, experiencing the process, analysing and performing of Verbatim Theatre. On February 9th five Year 12 Drama students travelled to Sydney, under my supervision, to see a matinee of "OnStage". The students were inspired by the performances and band 6 projects they saw. The students’ behaviour was impeccable and a good day was had by all.

Maitland Society of Artists Scholarship Congratulations to Year 12 Visual Arts student Samara King, our 2018 recipient of the Maitland Society of Artists encouragement award - $100 gift card at Eckersleys’ art supplies to assist her in accessing extra resources for her Body of Work. Art @ Lunch This year, Mr Focic is running a Wednesday lunchtime class in B106 for students interested in entering various art and photography competitions. We have had a lot of success recently in these and want to build upon this as well as giving students opportunities to develop their creative skills in different areas. It is proving very popular at the moment. Currently there are 4 possible competitions students can enter. The competitions build students’ skills and experience with a range of materials and many have great prizes and also the opportunity to be hung in an exhibition (see links below). All ages welcome.

Old Black and White Cameras Do you have any old film cameras you would like to donate to the School? This year interest has sparked and we have two Year 9 Photography classes running in 2019. We have been fortunate in the past to have parents donate unwanted manual film cameras. If you can help, it would be greatly appreciated, as tracking down old manual cameras is getting increasingly difficult, but such a great way to investigate the traditions in photographic practice.

Subject Contributions In all subjects within the CAPA faculty there are material costs that have to be covered by a subject contribution. It is essential these fees are paid to allow for the purchase of quality material and equipment. We appreciate early payment of subject contributions and also understand that periodic payments may assist families. We do provide a folder to Year 9 PDM and paint brush sets to Visual Arts students in Years 9 & 11, which are issued on payment. Thank you for your support

2019 ANTI-BULLYING PLAN

At Maitland Grossmann High School we aim to create a safe and supportive school community for everyone. You are an important part of our work to prevent bullying and to respond effectively if it happens. Stopping bullying involves everyone.

Below are tips on what to do if your child talks to you about bullying. Parents know their children best and know the best way to tailor communication to their needs. Adapt these tips to what works for you and your child.

If your child talks to you about bullying:

1. Listen calmly and get the full story. Your calm response is important to allow your child to tell you all about the situation. After they've told you their story, ask questions to get more details if you need: who, what, where, when. Although you may feel some strong emotions about your child's experience, try to keep calm to avoid more distress to your child.

2. Reassure your child they are not to blame. Many children blame themselves and this may make them feel even worse. You could say things like, 'That sounds really hard to deal with. No one should have to put up with that.' or 'I'm so glad you told me. You should be able to feel safe at school; that's not fair at all'.

1. llsltn calmly and gei1he full s1oiy. 2. Rtn sureyourchild that they are

no,to blame. 3. ) . Ask your childwhat 1hey want to

do about ii and how you canhelp.

4. · Vlsllwww.bullyingnoway.gOY.au to Rnd some sua1egies.

5. s.ContaCI 1he school. 6. Cht<k In regularly withyou, child.

3. Ask your child what they want to do and what they want you to do. A critical part of your response is to avoid jumping in to solve the problem. While it is natural to want to protect your child, helping them to find their own solution is a better option. It helps them feel they have some power in the situation.

4. Visit www.bullyingnoway.gov.au to find some strategies. The website has tips and ideas for different bullying situations. One idea is to practise strategies at home to help your child feel more confident.

5. Contact the school. Your child may be reluctant for you to do this, so discuss the idea and reassure them that the school would want to know and is able to help. Make an appointment to meet with your child's teacher and, if you need to, ask to talk with the principal. Contact the school immediately if you have a concern about your child's safety.

6. Check in regularly with your child. Keep the conversation going. It can take time to resolve issues, so check in regularly with your child about their experiences and their feelings. Your ongoing support is important.

If you are looking for support for yourself to deal with a bullying situation, you will find ideas on the Bullying. No Way! website for parents.

Parents are also invited to provide constructive feedback (via the school email) on MGHS 2019 Anti -Bullying Plan (uploaded to the School webpage). Thanks for your support to make Maitland Grossmann High School a great school for everyone.

March 2019

National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence

The 15th March is the National Day of Action against Bullying. MGHS students and staff will be participating in events to build inclusive and a safe environment for our students and staff. A strategy that will continue through the year are our weekly Year Meetings. These aim to develop a sense of belonging connectedness and build student's social and emotional intelligence. As well, all classes from Years 7 -10 will be participating in Police Work shops to reinforce the harm that bullying/harassment and unsafe social media behaviours cause and strategies to use if being bullied/harassed. Students will show their support for the wellbeing of others by wearing an orange accessory on the 15th March.

Schools can be much more effective when parents report bullying and support their efforts to deal with it. If your child reports that bullying is occurring at school, or the bullying involves students from the school outside of school, you should let the school know the situation.

Working together with the school is the best way to help your child resolve bullying issues.

Schools will work with you to resolve the situation and will also work with the other student's parents. Due to privacy laws, they will not be able to share information about any other students involved.

Over the past two weeks, Individual Health Care Plans have been mailed home. Parents and carers of students who have a health care plan are asked to review the plan, make any necessary changes and return the plan to the school. Once received, the Plan will be updated and stored in the Student File. Health Care Plans are linked to the student's Sentral Profile to ensure staff have access to current health management plans. In addition, each year students who suffer an extreme allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) require an original ASCIA form to be completed by the doctor. As well, Department of Education requirements also calls for the doctor to complete the Allergies form. Both forms were sent home with the Health Planning package. At all times, students who have been diagnosed with having an extreme allergic response are required to carry in their school bag a current EpiPen along with a copy of their ASCIA form. Spot checks of EpiPens will begin in the last weeks of this term. Students who carry an Asthma puffer and/or Epipen also require the Permission to carry Asthma Reliever or Epipen form completed by parents and returned to the school. This form only needs to be completed once and will be stored in their Student File. If you have any concerns/queries around Individual Health Care Plans or health management please contact Lyne Matthews (Head Teacher Welfare)

FORMER STUDENTS’ ACHIEVEMENTS

Judith Loxley, a former MGHS student 1998-2003. Judith is now Head of Costumes and Design for the Harry Potter Stage Show, presently playing at the Princess Theatre in Melbourne. This is a huge accomplishment. Judith graduated in Year 12 in 2003 achieving a Band 6 in Textiles. Post school, Judith went on to NIDA, Australia’s National Institute of Dramatic Art – a centre of excellence in education for theatre, film and television.

Jude Loxley graduated from the Costume Production Crafts course at NIDA in 2007. Prior to Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Jude has worked extensively with the Michael Cassel Group, costume supervising the Australian Premiere of Beautiful: The Carole King Musical (2017), Kinky Boots (2016), and the International Tour of Les Misérables (2016), following on from her role assisting the Costume Supervisor from 2013-2015. In addition to this, Jude has costume supervised Les Misérables internationally, with Cameron Mackintosh Limited, in Mexico City (2018), São Paulo (2017), Tokyo (2015) and Seoul (2015). Other shows she has costume supervised include Mamma Mia! (LWAA, 2017), Fawlty Towers Live (LWAA, 2016), and the 2015 Bell Shakespeare season (As You Like It, Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet and The Tempest).

Josh Niland, a former MGHS student (completing Year 10 in 2004). He gained an apprenticeship at the Hunter River Hotel in 2005 and worked there for a couple of years before moving to Sydney to complete his apprenticeship at the Hilton Hotel with Luke Mangan.

Starting out in top Sydney restaurants such as Glass Brasserie Fish Face and Est., Josh runs fish eatery Saint Peter and Fish Butchery in Paddington with his wife, Julia. The pair offer a premium all-fish menu that hinges on Niland’s signature fin-to-scale philosophy that celebrates Australian produce and wine. It was during his time as head chef at Fish Face in Double Bay that Niland realised just how much of a fish was wasted in traditional cooking. It became his mission to use the whole fish – everything from bones to blood.

Jamie Oliver has called Josh Niland’s food “truly amazing”, and in a video posted to his Instagram called Niland “a very clever boy”. He goes on to say that his dining experience at Saint Peter was “mind-blowing”. Nigella Lawson – who has recently popped into a number of Sydney restaurants, also sung Saint Peter’s praises on Instagram, saying it “may very well be the best fish restaurant in the world”.

This reading program was introduced to Year 7 in 2018 and continues with Year 7 in 2019. The program focuses on individual mastery of key age-related skills and measures student growth with adjustable goals and progress tracking for each student.

Each student is given a quiz to establish their reading level and to encourage the reading of books (fiction and non-fiction) appropriate to the student’s age and ability. At this point in time students in Year 7 are completing the quiz to determine their reading level. The quiz is approximately 20-30 minutes duration. The quiz allows the school to get a baseline of students’ reading performance and sets the stage for continuous improvement in key areas of literature and informational text. This enables teachers to see which students are meeting benchmarks and who needs intervention. Teachers are then able to set attainable goals and chart students’ path towards reading success.

All books in the library have been classified (or levelled) and tagged so students know which books are appropriate for them. As new books are purchased these will also be tagged. Students are encouraged to read a range of genres according to their interests.

Once students have selected their books, time in class and at home is spent reading. When the book is completed, students then do a quiz on the book they have been reading, to determine how well they have read. Each quiz contains a range of skills and vocabulary. Quizzes are completed online. This way data can be collected to set goals for students and to gauge growth in their reading ability.

Reading teachers are given access to the information obtained in each quiz, so they can assist students in the selection of books which will assist their growth.

Reading groups are mixed ability and cross faculty with teachers involved in the program coming from Maths, Social Science, History, English and Science. Teachers have been trained in the program by Renaissance and are available for consultation and assistance when needed.

At regular intervals throughout the year, students will again be tested to see if they have met goals. This will allow students to move into harder levels, indicating their reading levels have improved. When the program is fully running, parents will be able to access their child’s data so when purchasing books, they can choose level appropriate books.

Staff involved in the program include: Jane Jardine, Brooke Bower, Jarrad Belbin, Wendy Stephan, Kate Mulligan, Sam Coburn, Matt Davies, Kristy Nardelli, Belinda Skinner, Jeni Sellers-Fogarty, Angela Colbert and Elisabeth Porreca-Dubois.

FROM THE BUSINESS MANAGER’S DESK

Invoices:

Invoices were generated on 18th February through our SchoolBytes software package. I have attached a “How to” guide, however, if you are experiencing difficulties please call the Front Office and the ladies will be happy to assist with any questions.

Sometimes you receive an account and it’s a bit overwhelming and at times we all struggle with financial matters. With this system you are able to make part payments e.g. Hospitality Fee $140, however, you can only afford to pay $20. Just adjust the amount to how much you wish to pay. This may make life a little easier and assist with the family budget.

Student Assistance: If you are experiencing financial hardship and are unable to pay your fees the school has a small fund where we can assist. Applications are available from the Front Office and all information is kept confidential. Should you have any questions or wish to discuss this matter please contact me and I am happy to explain the procedure.

Email Addresses: Please ensure your email address is correct on our records so these can be generated through the email process. The families who have not supplied an email, or their emails bounced, we have sent them out manually. Once you have completed the attached form informing us of your email address, please return it to the Office to ensure our records can be updated.

Thanking you

Jennette Hardy
