Becky Bray bring us this program and says
Full Service Schools
I’m happy to have the opportunity for North Scott Rotarians to hear about the efforts of Extension and the Davenport Schools to offer programs for families and youth that are changing lives. The impact of serving families through their child’s school has proven to make a difference for the whole family. These present-ers have been in the trenches figuring out what works and taking the best research available across the country and putting it into action. Their efforts have been noted nationally and the program here is being looked at as a model for other places.
Shaney Ford, Out of School Time Specialist Shaney supervises the Out of School Time(OST) Department for the Davenport Community School Dis-trict. The OST Department facilitates the Stepping Stones Programs, Summer Programs and DCSD’s Full Service Schools Initiative is housed within the OST Department. Shaney is a native of the Quad Cit-ies. After completing school, she served as a full-time AmeriCorps member. Once her service was com-plete she transitioned into the position of grant manager, eventually transitioning into her current role of OST Specialist.
Jennifer Best, Extension Educator Jennifer facilitates urban families, youth and communities programs for Iowa State University Extension and Outreach in Scott County. She works with Scott County schools, agencies and organizations to meet local needs using research and best practices. In this capacity, Jennifer develops programs, provides pro-fessional development and implements evaluation. Outside of her role with Extension, she is an adjunct faculty member at St. Ambrose University.

We serve our youth in many ways. On the left, Bill Tubbs visits our sponsored youth at the RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award) camp at Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa. Each year we sponsor several area youth to attend this intense leadership and awareness program. On the right is a photo of the District 6000 Outbound Youth Exchange students. This was taken at their final training session in Newton, Iowa. Our own Paul Kalainoff is the director of Outbound students. He and Doug Peterson of the Iowa Quad Cities club con-ducted this training session. Picture left: courtesy Bill Tubbs, right: Doug Peterson
Our speaker this past week, Jim Nelson, Past District Governor of District 6240 in Illinois is shown with Dennis Peterson. Dennis and Jim have been friends for many years, be-ginning when they, and Deb Peterson, served on the Dis-trict 6000 Youth Exchange Committee together. This visit allowed Dennis to invite Jim to attend our final Outbound Youth Exchange training session in New-ton, Iowa this weekend. Jim was publisher of the Newton newspaper during his time in District 6000.

John Gere will confirm the date(s) of your preference. You can then register at the John Deere Classic web site. Indicate that you are with the Iowa Quad-Cities / North Scott Rotary Clubs and marshal on #16. You are required to purchase a JDC shirt for $25. If you want to wear a cap, it must be a JDC cap. They cost $10. A visor is $10 or you can buy a floppy hat or a straw hat for $15. Those items will be available to pick up at the John Deere World Headquarters on Tuesday, July 26 from 4-8 PM, Wednesday, July 27 from 4-8 PM or Thursday, July 28 from 10 AM - 2 PM. LAST WEEK – July 15 – PDG Jim Nelson from District 6420
Past District Governor Jim Nelson shared his experiences of his March 2016 Friendship Exchange to Pakistan. Only five Rotarians went, as the team dwindled in fear, due to the unrest in the country. A Friend-ship Exchange is about sharing your culture, your home and yourself. He spent about 10 days there and was treated very well, as a mutual respect is held for all Rotary mem-bers. The team was in the city of Lahore, which has 10 million residents. The traffic was crazy. Residents drove very fast and did not respect the rules of the road. The airport that Jim left from had a bombing only two hours after he left. The flight returning to the United States took 25 hours, while the flight over only took 20 hours.
Fifty five attended on Friday, including Davenport Rotarians Ken Beck and Elyce Billany. Also our good buddy from the Naples, FL club, Duncan Cameron. Other guests were Jacob Hunter and Sara Somsky. Gene Meyer is now at Manor Care in Davenport for rehabilitation for his broken hip. Jeff Ashcraft announced that the Special Project that will be supported by the auction funds will be a multi-use playground that is accessible to all people, regardless of ability. The location and other important details for this project will be analyzed by Jeff and his committee. John Maxwell was the sergeant and collected $19 in fines. Bill Tubbs pledged $48 for the years that the North Scott Press has been in business, due to Tricia’s announcement that the Scott County Library re-ceived a (partial) grant to digitize all 48 years of the NSP.
The 4 Way Test Of the things we THINK SAY or DO
1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOOD WILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
