Introduction Air Pollution a hidden threat to the food
production Crops can be injured when exposed to
high concentration. These include the length of exposure to
the pollutant, the plant species and its stage of development as well as the environmental factors which make it either susceptible or resistant to injury.
What is Air Pollution?
Air pollution is the introduction of chemicals, particulate matter, or biological materials that cause harm or discomfort to humans or other living organisms, or cause damage to the natural environment or built environment, into the atmosphere rations of various AIR POLLUTANTS.
TYPES
AIR POLLUTANTS PRIMARY SECONDARY
TYPES OF POLLUTANTS
SOURCES OF AIR POLLUTANTSSS
Sources*Industrial emission*Burning of Fossil Fuels*Product of accidental releases due to inadequate spills or sprays*Agriculture activities*Volcanoes & Forestfire*Acid Rain
INDUSTRIAL EMISSION
VOLCANOES & FOREST FIRE
ACID RAIN
Effects of Air Pollution on Plants Air pollution injury to plants can be evident in
several ways. Injury to foliage may be visible in a short time and appear as necrotic lesions (dead tissue), or it can develop slowly as a yellowing or chlorosis of the leaf.
There may be a reduction in growth of various portions of a plant. Plants may be killed outright, but they usually do not succumb until they have suffered recurrent injury.
