Dear Working Wise:I've worked at the same car dealership for over 20 years, but I only get 3 weeks of holidays. Some of my co-workers have been here for only a few years, but are getting more holiday time than me. Should I be getting more? Signed Hollering for Holidays

Dear Working Wise:

Working WiseWorking WiseWorking Wise

Do you have a work-related question? Send your questions to Working Wise, at [email protected]. Charles Strachey is a manager with Alberta Human Services. This column is provided for general informa-tion.

Dear Hollering:

Holidays are referred to as Vacation and Vacation Pay under Alberta’s Employment Standards to avoid confusion with General Holidays (e.g., Canada Day) and Holiday Pay.

Most employees are entitled to annual vacation and vacation pay, under Alberta’s Employment Standards, to ensure that they have rest from work each year without loss of income.

The only exceptions are:• Licensed/registered real estate and securities salespersons;• Commission salespersons who solicit sales mostly outside their employer’s place of business;• Farm employees; and• Extras in lm/video production.

Construction workers are entitled to vacation pay as well, but not vacation time. Instead, they are paid vacation pay equal to six per cent of their wages. Since it doesn’t sound like you fall into one of the exempted categories, you are most likely entitled to Vacation and Vacation Pay under Employment Standards.

The basic entitlement to annual vacation is:• Two weeks after each of the rst four years of employment, and• Three weeks after ve consecutive years of employment.

So, it looks like your employer is giving you what you are entitled to.

Although you are not entitled to more vacation, you might want to consider asking your manager for an extra week in recognition of your long service.Long-serving employees provide stability and have the institutional knowledge that employers need to keep the business running smoothly day-to-day.

They also save employers the hassle and cost of hiring and training new sta. Some HR experts say that it can cost up to half a year’s salary to replace an employee.

If you decide to ask, be sure to mention any special accomplishments or contributions that you have made in the past few years to remind your manager why they should reward you and want to keep you.

And, most importantly, be emotionally prepared to hear “no”. You don’t want an emotional reaction to jeopardize your positive working relationships and long successful career.

If you would like any further information about Vacation and Vacation Pay, visit http://work.alberta.ca and click on Employment Standards.

Good luck!
