November 21 - 27, 2014

Dear Working Wise:I’m worried about my friend at work. She’s distracted and nervous all the time. She has told me about troubles in her relationship and I suspect that her partner is verbally abusive and may even hit her, but she won’t leave him and it seems to be getting worse. She’s also close to losing her job, because she’s always away due to her stress. What can I do? Signed Worried at Work

Dear Working Wise:

Working WiseWorking WiseWorking Wise

Do you have a work-related question?Send your questions to Working Wise, at [email protected]. Charles Strachey is a manager with Alberta Human Services. This column is provided for general information.

Dear Worried:

No one likes to talk about family violence and most workplac-es treat it as a private matter.

But no matter how hard we try to ignore it, the eects of family violence creep into our workplaces, causing: • higher turnover;• lower productivity;• higher absenteeism;• higher workplace instability;• increased risk of alcohol and drug abuse;• increased risk of violence in the workplace.

Unfortunately, Alberta has the second-highest rate of spousal violence among the provinces. The social, health, and criminal justice costs of family violence are estimated at more than $4 billion per year in Canada with Alberta’s share likely close to half a billion.

Not many years ago, suspected alcohol and drug abuse was regarded as a private matter. However, when the links between substance abuse and productivity were clearly established, many workplaces responded with programs to help employees deal with these issues.

In a similar way, programs, resources and support oered in the workplace can play an important role in preventing family violence.

As a supervisor or co-worker, you can oer support in the following ways: • Express your concern, e.g., “Something seems to be going on, can I help?”• Listen carefully without being judgmental.• Tell them that you believe them and acknowledge their feelings.• Let the person know that no one deserves to be abused, that family violence is a crime, and that they are not responsible for the abuser’s behaviour.• Acknowledge the danger. Don’t downplay the situation or suggest the person try harder.• Don’t oer advice or try to x the situation. • Encourage them to seek professional help and support. Become familiar with employee-wellness programs oered by your company or family violence resources available through community agencies. • Ask if they want your help accessing services, but respect their decision if they say “no”.• Keep yourself safe – don’t confront the abusive person.

You can also help raise awareness of family violence:• Display information in your workplace about family violence and resources for victims;• Sponsor a workplace event to raise awareness during Family Violence Prevention Month (November) http://human-services.alberta.ca/abuse-bullying.

For more tips on spotting family violence and what co-workers and managers can do to help prevent it, read the Family Violence Prevention tip sheet on the ALIS web site at: http://alis.alberta.ca.

The Alberta Council of Womens’ Shelters also oers an Employer Toolkit atwww.acws.ca/an-employers-toolkit.

If you want advice or need more help, call the toll-free Family Violence Info Line at 310 1818.

Good luck!
