“Cravings lie to us!” Dannah Gresh told a packed gym of Emmanuel female students, moms, and a host of other women. While tossing out candy peach rings, a bagel, and Doritos, Dannah told how at times women crave things like junk food when their body is in need of chromium or chloride which is found in broccoli or fish! She also stated that girls and women often crave the love of a boyfriend or husband, but that won’t satisfy. “If you are craving a guy, what you really need is God…A girl needs to get so lost in God that a guy has to seek Him to find her.”

Dannah Gresh, a graduate of Cedarville University and a well-known author and speaker, spoke to a hushed and receptive audience, connecting with the students and ladies. She is the best-selling author of several books including her best known, And the Bride Wore White, and her latest, Get Lost. She is also the founder of two national tours: Secret Keeper Girl and Pure Freedom. Dannah’s husband and adopted daughter, Autumn, were also present. The Greshes were leaving the following day for China to film a piece about Autumn’s homeland.

Mrs. Gresh asked the girls how long it took them each morning to get dressed. She challenged them for the next ten days to spend more time in God’s Word and with Him than in getting primped and dressed. “If you get lost

in God, He will fulfill your inner desires and needs…The only way to overcome the craving is to be completely consumed by the fire of God’s agape love…Only an intimate experience of His immeasurable, comparable love will meet the deepest need of your heart.”

At the conclusion of the event, some Emmanuel girls had Mrs. Gresh autograph books for them. Two of her autographed books are available in the school library. The teens also collected her Facebook and website information so they could write her questions. “She understood teenagers. She pointed us in the right direction,” said student Cheyenne Clausen. It was a great privilege to have Dannah Gresh at Emmanuel. Her message on purity and finding God to be all sufficient will be long remembered.

Dannah Gresh challenges middle and high school girls to crave God.

Mrs. Paula Swan’s Seventh Grade Boys Art Class has just completed designing and constructing its own pedal car. The class chose this project for their six-week art class. The students learned applied art including practical application for mathematics and science as they designed, measured, and cut. Mr. Schmidt came almost daily to help the class; he also loaned them his power tools. Mr. Bersinger, an

aeronautic mechanic, also helped. Mrs. Nicole Hall came to cheer the guys on and to sand. The students are delighted with their car which will be auctioned at the Emmanuel Auction this coming spring. They put together a lovely scrapbook documenting the process. Two bicycles, two 1970’s dining chairs, and some cabinet doors from the old sound system were sacrificed in the construction of the pedal car. While it won’t win any prizes for speed, the class agrees it is a “sweet” car, and the guys are immensely proud of their creation. Mrs. Swan and the boys wish to extend their thanks to all those who helped and to the parents, friends, and administrators who participated in their road rally, driving it around the parking lot.

The ECS varsity soccer team experienced a “good year of growth,” reports Coach Matt Parmelee when reflecting upon the team’s 8-8 record this year. “It is a tough league but we were able to compete with the competition.”

Tri-captains Nathan Creech, Matthew Rosser and Phillip Parmelee provided solid leadership throughout the season. Other key seniors who saw much action on the field were Charlie Heckma and William Higgins. “We also had a good group of underclassmen which made for a successful season,” Coach Parmelee says.

Matthew Rosser and Nathan Creech were named first-team all TAAC Conference and Northwest Ohio Division I. Phillip Parmelee was named second-team on both leagues. Adam Regnier and Nate Dick were named to the second-team all conference. Chandler Friesner and Alex Arbogast both were named Honorable Mention for the league.

“I am also thankful to our fans for coming out, supporting us and encouraging us to play in front of the home team,” Coach Parmelee says.

Congratulations to the six juniors and one senior who were inducted into the National Honor Society. Inductees include senior Sierra Sim and juniors Rachel Balentine, Kayla Billiard, Nathan Dick, Kaitlyn Mann, Mary Roberts, and Allyson Wagner. The NHS Induction Ceremony, which was presented by senior NHS members, was held October

29, 2013 in the high school lobby. The National Honor Society recognizes academic achievements

and honors those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. Emmanuel Christian School also recognizes students for their Faith.

“These students have modeled all of these characteristics,” says Principal Mr. Bob Flamm. “We have great hopes in these students as they follow the mission of Emmanuel Christian School and continue their walk in the Lord.”

ECS Inducts Seven into National Honor Society

National Honor Society of ECS promoted participation in a “Feed My Starving Children” food packing event at Toledo Christian School in October. “Feed My Starving Children” is a non-profit Christian organization committed to feeding God’s children hungry in body and spirit. Students hand-packed meals specifically formulated for malnourished children which will be shipped to some of the nearly 70 countries around the world. “Blessed are those who are generous, because they feed the poor.” Proverbs 22:9

Mrs. Terri Wolf, fourth grade teacher and coach, is committed to leading a healthy life, and she can now “officially” share her knowledge to help others accomplish their fitness goals. Through hard work and determination, Mrs. Wolf recently earned a personal trainer certification through the National Council for Certified Personal Trainers.

In the past Mrs. Wolf has used her physical education training to help students she’s coached and individuals at church to live healthier lifestyles through fitness and nutrition. “I’ve helped people with their fitness goals using my physical education and fitness training, but now I can help even more,” she says. “It was important to me to become certified which allows me to officially and legally provide that training to people who are interested.”

This certification is especially beneficial to the volleyball and track teams she coaches. “The world of physical training changes often. I want to keep up with the latest techniques and safety issues regarding training junior high and high school students safely and effectively.”

Anyone who has had Mrs. Wolf as a coach knows of her competitive spirit. With a smile she says her competitive edge extends well beyond school. This past September, Mrs. Wolf and Olivia Wetzel, her fourth-grade student, participated in the “Survival Run” in Holland, Ohio, a three-mile run and obstacle course ending in a mud pit. Mrs. Wolf placed an impressive first out of 36 participants in her age group, and Olivia came in fifth place for the nine-year-old runners. Hurdling over obstacles and running in a sea of mud “was really fun,” she says with a laugh. “I’d like to do more of these types of races.”

In the meantime, we are fortunate to have Mrs. Wolf share her latest knowledge, commitment and enthusiasm regarding living healthier lives.

If you were to ask any seniors what their favorite part of this year has been so far, hands downs it would be senior trip! After years of anticipation, our time had finally arrived. Our trip began on a hot September morning, with the typical all-high school send off and picture in front of the AMAZING luxury bus to which we were upgraded. After a fun day of excitement and travel, we eventually arrived at our hotel-like lodge on the campus of Appalachian Bible College in West Virginia!

While on senior trip, each of us experienced something new that we had never done before. From high ropes, to rappelling, to caving and white-water rafting, each activity was awesome! My personal favorite was caving! This experience was nerve wracking, cold and certainly dirty; it consisted of going through a dark cave, with some of it being pitch black, crawling through freezing water and mud, and seeing far too many “cave crickets,” which could also be called large, scary insects.

Besides the fun activities, we also were able to grow as a class in many ways. From class devotionals, to simply enjoying each others company at all hours of the day, to playing intense games of volleyball and catchphrase every night, and eventually to the bonfire on the last night, we were always having fun with each other. The bonfire was my favorite “bonding time” of the trip! We were able to open up our hearts to each other, and learn to love one another in a new and deep way that we never thought possible! Senior trip was absolutely awesome and I am so thankful for the week I was able to spend with my class!

A new school record of 45 units of blood were donated at the Red Cross Blood Drive, hosted by the ECS Student Council in October. About 60 students, alumni, parents, and friends of ECS sought to donate.

ECS Reaches New Level of Giving at Red Cross Blood Drive

Students were encouraged to think of someone who was in need of blood at some point in their life and consider donating in honor of that person. Donating one unit of blood could be enough to save three lives! Thanks to all who participated!

The annual Bike-A-Thon was a tremendous success in many ways. The weather was great, injuries were minimal and participation was outstanding. More than $19,000 was given by generous donors. We thank God for each donor! The funds raised will assist with the cost of additional rubber playground mulch for the elementary as well as the sixth grade science camp in the spring and the middle school Washington, D.C. trip next fall.

Thank you to all the students, parents and donors who took part and supported our school with your time, efforts and/or generosity. You are appreciated!
