Total Chlorine contentMeasuring Chlorine is very important for oilindustries and refineries. Refineries do notaccept crude oil containing more than 5ppm of Organic Chlorides. Hydrochloric acidcan be produced in hydro treating orreforming reactors and the acidaccumulates in condensing regions of therefinery. Unforeseen concentrations oforganic chlorides cannot be neutralizedeffectively and damage of the catalyticprocess can be the result.

Chlorine compounds are not known tobe naturally present in crude oils and usuallyresult from cleaning operations at productionsites, pipelines and/or tanks. It is importantfor the oil industry to have common methodsavailable for the determination of organicchlorines in crude oil, particularly when thetransfer of custody is involved.

Chemical companies are striving forsustainable solutions and need to know thechlorine concentrations to recycle theirwaste chemicals effectively.

Organic Chlorine analysis inlaboratories is based on two principles;oxidative pyrolysis and quantitativedetermination through microcoulometry.These techniques have been in existance formany years now, because of their ease of

use, absolute detection and sensitivity. TheASTM D4929 method describes thistechnique particularly for crude oil analysis,which is applicable to the Thermo ElectronCorporation Total Chlorine analyzers (modelsECS 1200 and ECS 3000).

ECS 1200 & ECS 3000 Thermo Electron Corporation designed twostate-of-the-art microcoulometric analyzersto meet the stringent compliance rules forTotal Chlorine measurements in high-gradechemicals, petroleum products, LPG andgases.

The ECS 1200 is a compact analyzerdesigned for laboratories performing anaverage number of Total Chlorine analyses.The ECS 1200 produces accurate data atppm level due to the combination of atemperature controlled dual furnace, a turbocombustion quartz tube and a large scrubberfor optimal conditioning of gas. The ECS3000 is a sensitive, robust and costeffective analyzer. When equipped with oneof the auto samplers, it offers extremelyreliable sub ppm level 24 hour operation.

This modular instrument saves benchspace and reduces investment costsbecause of the fast and easy switchingbetween the chlorine and sulfur detectors.

Principle of operationThe instrument pyrolyses the sample undercontrolled conditions at 1000 °C; using thepatented turbo combustion tube principle toensure complete combustion of organicchlorine to hydrogen chloride (HCl).

The combustion products go through aconcentrated sulfuric acid scrubber toremove water out of the combustion gasinto the coulometric titration cell. Theamount of current needed to generate silveris directly related to respectively the totalchlorine content.

Liquids moduleThe Thermo Electron Corporation universalliquids module is suitable for fast injectionof a wide range of light hydrocarbons. Theunique design of catalyst free syringe typeintroduction module can achieve anoperating temperature of 600 °C. Thismodule is provided with quick gasconnectors and can handle large volume ofsamples (max. 250 µl). Injection rate,sample volume and temperatures can be setby the ThEuS software, which ensures anoptimum total sulfur analysis.

Solids moduleFor analysis of heavy hydrocarbons andsolid samples, the Thermo Electron boatintroduction module is the key. Theautomatic boat driven concept controlled byThEuS software, provides the optimumsolution for many applications. The highsample load capacity and integrated septumstopper minimizes weighing errors andeliminates problems caused by non-homogeneous samples.The module is supported with quick gasconnectors for carrier gas and oxygenas well.

Gas & LPG moduleThe EGM 1700 is the module forintroduction of gas and LPG samples intothe Thermo Electron Elemental analyzers.The auto sampler is provided with avaporizer and exchangeable sample loopand easy connection to the liquids module. Beside Chlorine also the Sulfur content is avital parameter for a broad range ofcompanies. Sulfur compounds have a verystrong effect on the effectiveness ofcatalysts and causes severe catalystpoisoning, while sulfur dioxide is a majorsource of pollution.

The Thermo Electron ChlorineAnalyzers, models ECS 1200 and ECS 3000,can be upgraded with two types of TotalSulfur Detectors: Microcoulometric andPulsed UV-Fluorecsence.

MicroCoulometric optionThe Total Chlorine Analyzer can betransformed into a fully-fledged CoulometricSulfur analyzer by simply changing thecomplete titration cell. In this cell, a bundleof capillaries connect the reference andindicator electrode. This unique featurestretches the life span of the cell andreduces the need for cleaning andmaintenance.

Samples are combusted at hightemperature in an argon/oxygen atmosphereand sulfur dioxide is formed. These gasesare led through a scrubber with sulphuricacid that removes water out of thecombustion gas into the iodometric titrationcell. Here a coulometric titration takes placewith iodide. The amount of current neededto generate iodide is directly related to thetotal sulfur content.

The Thermo Electron ECS 1200 andECS 3000 models fully comply withASTM D3120, D3246 and D3961 for thissulfur analysis.

TS-UV moduleThe sulfur UVF module has a short start-uptime and is able to perform a large numberof simultaneous chlorine & sulfur analysessupported by the Thermo Electron Software(ThEuS).

The pulsed UV-fluorescence module isconnected to the ECS 3000 as of an add-onpackage and operates in serial sequence.No other parts of the basic ECS 3000 modellike combustion tube or sample introductionmodule need to be amended or exchanged.
