With a brand newchassis, body andengines the CX-5 hasbeen designed to be aslean and mean aspossible.

Mazda is claiming a2.2-litre diesel versionof the car fitted with astop/start system willhave class leading CO2emissions below120g/km and averagefuel economy of morethan 60mpg.

The CX-5 will haveits world premiere atthe Frankfurt MotorShow on September 13and is due on sale earlynext year.

A compact crossoverSUV, the car is the firstto be styled aroundMazda’s Kodo designtheme which wasrevealed on its Minagiand Shinari concepts.

With flowing lines,the body is designed tobe as sleek as possible– and the style is likelyto become the ‘newface’ of future Mazdamodels.

As well as usinglightweightcomponents theSKYACTIV systemfeatures a range of newpetrol and dieselengines with optimumcompression ratios of14:1. In the case of thepetrol engine that ismore than a Formula 1car.

all of its 2011Ninja ZX-10Rmotorcycles foran inspection ofthe machine'swiring harness.

The movefollows a problemon some machineswhere the mainharness can rubagainst the rear ofthe frame and, inextremecircumstances,cause damage tothe loom.

While nomachines in theUK have beenreported with anywiring harnessdamage,Kawasaki MotorsUK has initiated arecall and issending letters tothe registeredowners of all 2011Ninja ZX-10Runits purchasedfrom Kawasakiroad bike dealers.

The dealerinspection willtake a maximumof 20 minutes andthe harness willeither bere-routed,repaired orreplaced asnecessary.

● GIANT solarpanels have

been installed toprovide electricityfor the Toyotafactory atBurnaston inDerbyshire.

Capable ofproducing enoughpower to build7,000 cars a year,the system is ajoint projectbetween ToyotaUK and BritishGas and cost £10million.

Sport has a 2.0-litre turboengine which gives plenty ofpunch delivered via VW’ssix-speed semi-automatic DSGgearbox.

Top speed is close on140mph and 0-60 takes lessthan 7.5 seconds and in trueVW style it handles.

Uprated suspension isstandard on the Sport modeland so is an electronicdifferential lock as fitted tothe Golf GTI enabling it todeliver the right amount offun to keep most drivershappy.

It is not in the hot hatchleague but it will put a smileon your face and is thequickest Beetle to date withalmost 200bhp on tap.

The catch is that the Sportmodel will cost the best part of£25,000 when it goes on sale inthe UK next year – and thatmakes it the most expensiveBeetle as well.

But that’s for the flagshipmodel and the range will bepriced from £14,897 which willbuy you a 1.2-litre turbo

version in entry-level trim.The new Beetle is playing

very much to the autofashionistas who have fallenfor the retro revival of classicssuch as the MINI and Fiat 500- and while such buyers areprepared to pay for the looks,the Beetle is by no meanscheap.

What is has got is the looksand the new Beetle is muchmore faithful to the originalthan the Mark 2 versionwhich ran from 1997.

The roof is lower, thebonnet longer and thewindscreen is fairly uprightgiving it a profile akin to thecoupe look created byFerdinand Porsche whichearned the car its bugnickname back in 1938.

There are 12 colours to go atand there’s also the option of a‘turbo’ side decal as well asnameplate on the boot belowthe prominent rear spoiler.That will be market specific soit will be Beetle in the UK,Bug in the US and Kafer in its

home market of Germany.Not surprisingly, although

the Beetle will sell around theglobe, the newcomer is verymuch aimed at Europe andthe US – where Herbie theLove Bug made the Beetle aFlower Power hit in the Hippyyears.

While Flower Power was afeature of the last Beetle,which came with its own BudVase on the dashboard, theinterior of the new model ismuch more a blend of old andnew – and it can be fitted witha 400 Watt sound system fromFender – the first time the

American brand best knownfor the Stratocaster andTelecaster guitars has createdan audio for cars – and itrocks.

Not only can it be loud, thesound quality is excellent andthat’s enhanced by a digitalradio which is standard fitacross the Beetle range.

Like the original, thedashboard has a fairly flatface – which can be colourmatched to the paint job - andnow features a doubleglovebox, the top one havingan upward folding lid just likethe models of yesteryear

although its capacity is ratherlimited.

Sat nav is an option and sois a panoramic sunroof,ultra-bright bi-xenonheadlamps with LEDsurrounds and a bank of extradials (showing oiltemperature, turbo boost anda stop watch) can be fitted.

Although only a three doorit is a fairly roomy four-seaterwith more headroom than itspredecessor.

With the engine havingmoved to the front of the carfrom the last generationBeetle, boot space is alsobigger at 310 litres – 905 withthe rear seats folded – and theluggage area is sensiblyproportioned.

There are three trim levels –Beetle, Design and Sport – andin addition to the 2.0-litre and1.2 petrol engines, the line upwill feature a 1.6-litre dieselcapable of averaging 65.7mpgand a potent 1.4-litre TSIpetrol boosted to 160PS.

That engine and the 1.2 willbe available in the first waveof Beetles to go on sale earlynext year.

IT was all-change for the NissanMicra when fourth generationmodels of the popularsupermini hit the road earlierthis year.

While a fresh style, lighterweight, new platform, extra kit andbetter interior space are allelements of the latest model, thebiggest decision was to embracepetrol power, exclusively.

Mindful of the fact that choosingdiesel cars was more expensive bothin the showroom and at the pumps,the Japanese company opted to axeoil-burning versions of the Micra.

Instead there is now a simpledrivetrain choice – a newthree-cylinder 1.2-litre petrol engineavailable in two states of tune andmated to either a five-speed manualor continuously variable CVTtransmission.

The tested 79bhp version isperfect for its city and suburbanhabitat. It returns a healthy average

fuel figure of around the 50 milesper gallon mark, an even healthieremissions level of 115g/km and ispleasant to drive, though I found thegearshift a bit rubbery.

And for squeezing into tightparking spots and manoeuvringaround congested areas it has themost fantastic turning circle.

Out on faster roads it performsadequately once up to speed andfeels stable so long as there are nostrong crosswinds.

Nissan has set great store by itsnew V – for Versatile – platform onwhich the Micra is constructed and

which, in time, will also form thebasis for a new saloon and an MPV.

Even though it is slightly largerthan the outgoing Micra – thewheelbase has grown by 20mm – theplatform has been engineered to bemore rigid for better handling and arefined ride, but with lower weight.

Inside, there’s now a touch morecabin space with better headroomand improved space for rearpassengers. Two adults plus a childin between is a workable rearcombination and pretty good for acar of this size.

As for styling, the Nissandesigners chose what they call a‘connected cocoon' approach. Forinstance the dashboard has a twinbubble theme which matches thecircular instrument binnacle with asimilarly shaped glovebox ahead ofthe passenger. There’s also an upperstorage area above it.

The idea is practical but thequality of the plastics feels cheap

and the whole interior is rather dulland boring compared to rivalmodels that go for a more funky,colourful style. There are a fewthoughtful features though, like aneat bag holder incorporated intothe front passenger seat to preventbags rolling around the cabin whenthe car is on the move.

Trim grades are the familiar

entry-level Visia followed by Acentaand then Tekna, all coming withelectric power steering, six airbags,electric front windows, Bluetoothphone integration and ESP asstandard, which is unusual for citycars.

Top-selling Acenta grade adds15-inch alloy wheels, climate controlair-con and cruise control.
