IT’S hard to imagine a£78,000-plus car ever being abargain, but Porsche may justhave managed that feat with itslatest take on the 911.
Forget, at least for the time being,that £78,000 is still a spectacularamount of money to pay for a car,especially in these dismal times.
Instead, concentrate on how thenew Carrera GTS fits into the 911range and offers you more for yourmoney than any other car there.
It’s an open secret that there is anew version of the 911 due, probablynext year. So you might think thatthe GTS is just a new paint job andstickers to refresh the existingmodel line-up.
If you do, then think again,because this is a superb car onevery level that has immediatelybecome just about the best 911available.
The trick Porsche has pulled offis to build a more sporting, morefocused version of the Carrera, withlots of highly desirable kit (for lessthan the price of buying itseparately), that is nevertheless acar you can still drive every day,rather than some Frankenstein’smonster of a track-day special.
For example, the car comes asstandard with its rear seats andlonger-range fuel tank deleted tosave weight – just like a track-daycar. But for no cost you can havethem put back and, to be honest, Ican’t imagine why you wouldn’t. Ifyou can tell the difference, you musthave a set of white racing overallsand helmet in your wardrobe.
So less is more, more or less.Compared with the Carrera S,
there is around 23bhp of extrapower on tap, taking the output forthe 3.8-litre flat six up to 408bhp.
There are also some tweaks tohow the engine breathes, whichresults in the maximum torque(420Nm, for those who understandsuch things) being available atlower revs, a big boost todriveability.
The headline performance figuresare 0-62mph in 4.2 seconds (for aCoupe fitted with PDK transmissionand the Sport Chrono package thatadds launch control) and a topspeed of 190mph.
For the heavier Cabriolet, theacceleration is a fraction slower (4.4seconds) as you might expect, buttop speed remains the same.
And, usefully, fuel consumption isno worse, with a combined figure of27.4mpg.
Both models are a fractionquicker than their Carrera S
counterparts, but that doesn’ttell the whole story about how
good this car is to drive.The GTS is rear-wheeldrive only, but has the
wider rear track ofthe all-wheel drive

precision only available from a reardrive set-up, with the extra gripafforded by the wider track.
Some fancy 19-inch RS Spyderwheels, in black, look great,especially with white or the specialGT Silver metallic paintwork, andadd to the fantastic levels of grip.
The suspension features adaptivedampers as standard, so the carstiffens up when it needs to, butoffers a comfortable ride with allyour fillings intact when drivingover bumpy roads.
The Cabriolet (from £85,249)doesn’t let the side down, stayingcomposed and flex-free on poorroads, and not feeling dramaticallyheavier than the Coupe, despitecarrying around 100 kilos moreweight.
Top down on a sunny day, the Cabis a wonderful place to be and likeany convertible supercar, a poser’sheaven.
If I were Porsche, I’d fit a littlecamera that perches on the front
wing and relays pictures of car anddriver to the sat-nav screen – this isa car you really want to be seen in.
Such a camera would doubtlessbe an expensive option – and theoptions list is the place where you
can end up spending serious moneyand risk of ruining the car’sexcellent value.
Add PDK transmission (£2,525),integrated sat-nav (£1,311), andceramic brakes (£5,463) and you’vejust put nearly £10,000 on the price.And that’s before you consider allthe ‘little’ extras like Bose SurroundSound (£825) or white dials (£400).
But stay with the manualgearchange, keep your trustyTomTom, and try looking over yourshoulder when reversing, and youcan keep the price down to the pointwhere other 911s look like poorvalue in comparison.
Porsche obviously knows it hascome up with something specialhere – and already predicts theCarrera GTS will be the mostpopular 911 derivative this year.

Overall, there’s plenty to likeabout the Outlander, from itsdistinctive jet fighter grille to thehandsome profile and simpleinterior layout including seats thatfold at the prod of a button.
When used as a five-seater there’sloads of head, leg and shoulderroom while even the centre rear
position is comfortable. Boot spaceis also first class.
The car’s cabin is durable ratherthan luxurious, though the seatsand steering wheel on this modelare of soft leather, and usefulstowage areas include a pair ofgloveboxes – the top one cooled.
On the road the Outlanderhandles confidently and feels stablein adverse conditions thanks to itsall-wheel control drivetrain.
By turning a rotary selector
mounted between the front seats thedriver can engage one of threemodes to best suit the road andweather – 2WD for normalconditions, 4WD with its 70:30front-rear split for unsurfaced roadsand a low range mode for moreheavy duty off-road work.
