LittleLexus is readyforsilent revolutionIF there’s a hush in the

close tonight when theneighbours come homeit’s likely they’ve fallenfor Kylie advertising the

new Lexus hybrid.The silent revolution – as

Ms Minogue promotes – is thecatch phrase for this littlehatchback which Lexus wantsto rival the likes of the BMW1-Series and Audi A3.

Exotic marketing it is andin every way the Lexus CT200h is about to blaze a trailwhere no other car maker hasdared to travel.

The CT 200h is purely ahybrid and will be using itspetrol/electric powertrain totake on some fairly meatyconventional engines in itsrivals.

Priced from £23,485 to£30,635 it is definitely in thepremium hatchback grooveand being a Lexus it’s wellappointed in any of its threetrim levels.

The USP is the hybridsystem which means everyversion of the CT 200h ispowered by a 1.8-litre petrolengine mated to an electric

motor with a CVT gearbox.It’s the same set-up as in the

Toyota Prius and gives the CT200h exceptionally green – andtax free – credentials.

Average fuel economy isclaimed to be 68.9 to the gallonand CO2 emissions are94g/km meaning there’s noroad tax or congestion chargeto pay and for business usersit’s in the 10 per cent tax band.

That’s not pie in the sky. Wemanaged to get more than63mpg out of the CT 200hduring a two hour drive whichstarted in town, cruisedthrough the countryside thenfinished with 40 miles ofmotorway.

With fuel costs at ridiculouslevels, the diesel-like economyfrom the petrol-powered Lexusis a compelling feature andnone of its rivals can match itfor emissions.

The ride in the CT 200h issmooth and very refined – itdoes not have the same tautand busy feel of the Germancars even though Lexus has

fitted a highly responsivesteering rack and, on the toprange Premier models,optional lateral dampers togive it a sportier feel.

The emphasis is on anupmarket, high techexperience rather than raw,hot hatch performance.

Which is where the silentrevolution comes into play.Push the starter button andmove away and – assumingthe radio/CD is off – all youwill hear is the faintest roadrumble.

With a bit of luck that willlast for the first two miles as

long as you don’t exceed the28mph limit where the petrolengine will cut in – and even ifit does there is a stop/startsystem to conserve energy intraffic.

As a full hybrid the CT 200hhas a multi-mode drive systemwhich allows it to operatepurely as an electric vehicleuntil there is too much drainon the batteries.

Left to its own devices, theelectric motor will cut in asrequired boosting the outputof the engine from 98 to134bhp giving the CT 200h atop speed of 112mph and a 0 to

60 acceleration time of 10.3seconds.

There’s also eco and sportsettings which can be selectedon demand altering throttleresponse and gearing.

Cleverly, the dashboarddisplay changes replacing apower flow gauge with a revcounter as soon as sport modeis dialled in. The backlightingaround the instruments alsoswitches from blue to red.

Make the most of theoptions while on the move andthe benefits in fuelconsumption can besignificant.

As with all hybrids, thenickel metal hydride batteriesare recharged as the car goesalong and the battery pack isdesigned to last the life of thevehicle. It’s covered by a fiveyear/60,000 mile warranty,which is two years longerthan the guarantee on the caritself.

Noise insulation inside isexceptional and even with thepetrol engine running atmotorway speed the CT 200hbrings a new level ofrefinement to this class of car.

IF anyone had dared suggestjust a decade ago that Hyundaiwould become one of theworld’s top five carmanufacturers and be the first

to offer a transferable five-yearwarranty, they would no doubt havebeen marched away bysmug-looking men in white coats.

It’s the Koreans who are havingthe last laugh though, because thismeteoric global expansion isexactly what has happened –Hyundai is currently number fivein the worldwide car maker chart.

Opinions may differ over whichis their best model. For me it’s theix20 compact people carrier, asmallish vehicle that offers afantastic amount of space, boastsexcellent fuel economy, bang on thebutton value for money and arefreshing splash of feelgood factor.

The ix20 is actually based on thei20 supermini, but with moreflexibility, and as the first car in

Hyundai’s history to be extensivelytested on the worst of British roadsits dynamics are also assured.

Three engines – 1.4 and 1.6-litrepetrol units and a 1.4 CRDi diesel –the same number of equipmentlevels plus manual or automatictransmissions make up the range.

All manual cars also featureIntelligent Stop & Go technology,low rolling resistance tyres and analternator management system,giving the lowest emissions and fuelconsumption in this area of themarket.

In the case of the tested 1.4 diesel

that means an average 65.7 milesper gallon, so much so that youdrive for days wondering if the fuelgauge has jammed.

Add CO2 emissions of just114g/km and motoring costs arereduced through a cheaper roadfund licence – currently £30 a year –as well as savings at the pumps.

The ix20’s design is simple buteye-catching, effectively movingaway from the boxy minivan looksadopted by some of its rivals. Iparticularly like the way theheadlights sweep back EdHardy-style into the body fromeither side of a spider’s web grille.

And the windscreen also blendsalmost seamlessly into a panoramicdouble sunroof that provides abright, airy feel for the passengers.

As for practicality, well this is areal little Tardis with amplelegroom and lots of headroom forthree across the back.

The rear seats also split and fold

flat 60/40 as well as sliding forwardand back and you get a fair sizeboot which has a false floor and lotsof hidden space beneath.

Another attractive feature is theway the dash and instruments lightup in an electric blue, red and greenat night.

While the ix20 is a pleasant car todrive it’s certainly no flying

machine, the diesel needing someserious revving to get up to speed.But then performance is unlikely tobe a factor in the decision-makingprocess here.

What matters is the car’s style,build, practicality and price. Addthese to that five-year unlimitedmileage warranty and you have acompelling combination.

Saab spices up its 9-3 saloonandestateSAAB’S latest 9-3 saloon andestate range will cost from£21,495 when it hits showroomsnext month.

The facelifted models willfeature a pair of new petrolturbo engines, more standardkit, better performance andlower emissions.

The 9-3’s fresh face and isdistinguished by new frontbumpers, ‘ice block’ headlampsand a new grille, while at therear the word Saab replacesbadging on the chrome trim andall saloon models get aboot-mounted spoiler.

Inside, a smarter cabin boasts

titanium-effect trim around theinstrument panel, gearshiftmoulding, doors and glovebox -SE models come with leatherseats and Aero models add newgraphite-fibre highlights.

Beneath the bonnet, the twonew 2.0-litre turbochargedpetrol engines produce 163bhp

and 220bhp, both being availablewith a six-speed manual orautomatic transmission.

The entry grade manual 2.0t163 SE saloon will cost from£21,495 and emits 155g/km ofCO2, while the £23,495 1.9 TTiDmodel – described as the ‘mostpowerful sub 120g/km saloon

and estate on sale in the UK’ -produces 180bhp with 119g/kmof emissions.

Saab also has strong claims forthe £27,245 2.0-litre (220bhp)petrol version, calling it ‘themost powerful sub 160g/kmpetrol saloon and estate on salein the UK’ with its 155g/km.
