READY for a rebel yell?Well American iconChevrolet has come upwith just the job in theshape of funky new

supermini the Spark.The car it replaces, the Matiz – a

last link with the old Daewoo brandthat Chevy took over five years ago– was a decent model in its ownright.

But this latest Chevy moves theshow on to a trendier, moreupmarket level with its freshcharacter, racy looks and strikingcolour schemes.

If cute and cuddly is what you’reseeking, then look elsewhere, but ifyou’re switched on by a moreyouthful, dynamic looking small carthen Chevy could be the one.

The company insists that Sparkwill only ever be available as afive-door hatchback because it lookslike a three-door car anyway withits rear door handles tucked

discreetly away behind the doorpillars.

That’s not the only piece offorward-looking design. Smart styletouches include scarlet, satin steelor piano black detailing that swoopsfrom the doors to a neat high glossstorage trough above the glovebox.

And the seats feel durable, in thecase of the tested LT modelfeaturing a red swirly pattern,while there’s ample shoulder roomand sufficient legroom for a pair ofrear passengers – even with thefront seats slid well back.

It’s a tight squeeze for a centre

rear passenger though as this isrealistically a four-seater car, atleast if you want to travel incomfort.

The cabin’s focal point is itsmotorcycle-style instrument pod,which sits on top of the steeringcolumn while the analogue speedois backed up by a digitaltachometer, just like on a sportsbike.

A neat touch is the way the dialsall turn consistently brighter asdarkness falls with a cool-lookingice blue neon glow.

Just two petrol engines are onoffer – a 1.0-litre unit producing67bhp and a 1.2-litre powerplantgenerating 80bhp. Neither offermuch in the way of outright punch,but the 1.2 model was quite livelyand frugal too, the fuel return of49mpg impressive given the amountof mixed driving completed.

A well weighted feel from thesteering and stability at speed were

both positive aspects of the Spark,which is easy to park andcommands a low insurance rating.

On the negative side, the boot istiny – though the rear seats do splitand fold 60/40 – and the car had apair of grey go-faster stripesrunning across the bonnet to thebottom of the boot.

Some people may like them, but

the roof rails do the dynamic jobwell enough on their own.

All models – prices are from£6,945 for the Spark 1.0 – are wellequipped with six airbags asstandard and the flagship LT, whichonly comes with the 1.2-litre engine,has 15-inch alloy wheels, climatecontrol, electric windows, a body kitand six-speaker sound system.

TWINS ain’t what they usedto be. The two cylinderengine is making acomeback and being used byFiat to spearhead an

economy drive.Fitted to the popular little Fiat

500 the new engine is a revelation –not only because it can averagearound 70 miles per gallon but alsobecause it’s great fun to drive.

With CO2 emissions of only95g/km Fiat is claiming theTwinAir engine to be the cleanestmainstream production petrolengine in the world.

It is even greener when mated toa semi-automatic gearbox whichreduces emissions further to just92g/km.

Fiat - who launched the newpowerplant to local dealers atAintree racecourse this week - hasinvested £300million in two cylindertechnology which – as far asconventional engines go – is themost efficient, low frictionconfiguration.

With the help of a turbo chargerthe tiny 875cc engine develops85bhp – good enough to produce a 0to 60 time of 11 seconds and a topspeed of 108mph.

Cast your mind back a fewdecades and those statistics arevery similar to the performance of a1.8-litre twin carburettor MGBsports car of the 1970s – but thatwould average around 25 to thegallon.

The last time a two cylinder carwas on sale in the UK was in the1980s with the Citroen LNAhatchback.

Prior to that they were bestknown in the Citroen 2CV and, ifyou go back far, enough in theoriginal Fiat 500 of the 1950s.

But lack of performance meantthe little engines could not competewith four cylinder models.

Now, with the help of turbocharging and the current focus oneconomy, the two cylinder is back ina big way.

The TwinAir engine will be

available in all versions of the 500priced from £10,665 for thehatchback and £13,665 forconvertibles.

That slots the two pot in betweenthe entry level 1.2-litre petrol 500which costs £9,465 and the 1.3-litrediesel version priced from £11,865.

TOUCH OF CLASS: The Astra Sport Tourer

VAUXHALL is celebratingthe best of British – andin three weeks timedrivers across thecountry will be able to

find just how good that is.Designed by a Brit, engineered in

the south and built at EllesmerePort in Cheshire, the new VauxhallAstra Sport Tourer has thepotential to take the motoring worldby storm.

And when it arrives inshowrooms on November 26, thestarting price will actually be £500less than the current entry levelAstra Estate model it replaces, eventhough there’s a raft of extra kit.

This is a hugely important car toVauxhall and the Ellesmere Portplant, which will produce between135,000 and 155,000 vehicles during2011 - some 80 per cent of which willbe Sport Tourer.

That’s a lot of cars. And if theAstra Hatch looks good and driveswell, then consumers are in for areal treat with the newcomer.

The launch programme kicked offwith a drive to the factory in theoutgoing Astra Estate, a worthyworkhorse let down by a basic andstraight edged interior.

It’s light years removed from theSport Tourer with its funky cabin,falling roofline, wraparound rearwindscreen and bladed sides.

But the new car’s far moreelegant lines - penned by Britishdesigner Mark Adams - haven’tcompromised space, the load

capacity equalling that of thecurrent car with the seats in placeand exceeding it with them lowered.

There are some smart featurestoo, like the new FlexFold operationwhich allows each section of the60/40 split rear seats to drop flat at

the touch of a button in the luggagebay wall.

Then there’s the two-touch bootcover – a tap of the fingers to slide itupwards, another to retract itcompletely into a cassette.

The walls of the boot are also flat,

the tailgate and load bay the samewidth to make loadingstraightforward and a simple butsensible option comes in the shapeof a rubberised luggagecompartment liner to protect thecarpeting, rear seatbacks andbumper.

Sport Tourer buyers will have achoice of seven engines fromlaunch, the range an average 13.3per cent cleaner and moreeconomical than its predecessor.

Trim grades are labelled ES,Exclusiv, Sri and SE, all with ESP,six airbags, air-con, front electricwindows and daytime runninglights as standard.

The range kicks off with the1.4-litre 100PS petrol ES model at£16,575 and there are also 1.4 Turbo140PS and 1.6 115PS petrol units.Diesels comprise a 1.3 CDTiecoFLEX powerplant with 95PS, apair of 1.7-litre engines with 110 or125PS and a 160PS 2.0-litre CDTiwhich tops the line-up at £24,300 in

SE automatic.January will see the arrival of

Start/Stop technology, to be rolledout in every Vauxhall model rangeover the next 18 months, in the 1.3CDTi ecoFLEX.

It’s the 1.7-litre 110PS diesel that’sexpected to be the big seller though.It costs from £18,665 in basic EStrim and combines plenty of punch(0-60mph in 12.2 secs, 113mph topspeed) with 62.8mpg fuel economyand 119g/km of CO2, making it veryappealing to both private buyersand the fleets.

This is a really rewarding car todrive and appreciably better thanthe 1.4 Turbo that performs nicelyon the open road but starts tolabour a bit uphill.

Overall though, the Sport Toureris a car with a big future. It hasbeen tuned for British roads at theVauxhall Engineering Centre atMillbrook, Bedfordshire, it looksthe real deal, is spacious too – andhas a touch of class.
