IF you ever fancied a MINI butdecided against it because itjust wasn’t large enough tomeet your needs it’s time tothink again.

There’s now a supersized MINIthat’s longer, wider, taller and – forthe first time ever in the MINIfamily – has four doors.

Not only that but you can alsohave it with four-wheel-drive. Ineffect an off-roading MINI.

The newcomer is the MINICountryman, although unlike theoriginal Countryman it doesn’t havevan-like double doors at the rear,preferring to remain a hatchbacklike the best selling traditionalMINI. The Countryman officiallygoes on sale on September 18, butthere is no point in rushing out toorder one for this year as the entireallocation for the UK has alreadybeen snapped up.

The Countryman is the fourthmember of the MINI family butunlike the other three – theHatchback, the Convertible and theClubman – it feels more of a distantrelative.

Drive any of the other three,which are all built on the sameplatform, and the feel, the handlingand the fun are almost identical.But the Countryman is a totallydifferent ball game. It’s a moregrown up MINI with a personalityall its own that will appeal to adifferent type of buyer altogether.

The first thing that strikes you isthat the new car feels much heavier,which is perhaps not surprisingconsidering the addition offour-wheel-drive and an extra 15inches in length, six inches inheight and four inches in width.

Those extra inches mean not onlycan you now sit in the rear seatsand stretch your legs out – animpossibility in the current MINI –but you also have some 350 litres ofboot space with the rear seats inposition. That’s as much as in aVolkswagen Golf. Fold the rear seatsdown and that figure jumps to acavernous 1,170 litres.

That means the Countryman isexpected to bring in sales from a

before – like families with olderchildren and golfers

If you sit in the rear seats andopen the doors you will besurprised to find that they openwider than on a 3-Series BMW.

Prices start from £16,000 for aMINI One Countryman – which

comes with front-wheel-drive only –while the Cooper Dieselfour-wheel-drive version has a basicprice of £19,875.

Best seller is likely to be thetwo-wheel-drive Cooper, from£17,495. Opt for a Cooper S versionand it will cost you £20.810 for

two-wheel-drive and £22,030 forfour-wheel-drive.

The cars come with thetraditional MINI-style dashboard,including the large speedo, as wellas a choice of either a bench seat inthe rear to accommodate threepassengers or two individual seats.

Either way the price is the same.Despite the additional inches the

Cooper S Countryman will still hit62mph in 7.6 seconds (7.9 for the4x4) on its way to a top speed of134mph. Regards economy theCooper D Countryman will average64 mpg (57mpg for the 4x4).

More choiceas Suzuki reveals its latest Z-starSUZUKI has completed itsrevised SX4 hatchback range witha new SZ5 4x4 model completewith either a 1.6-litre petrol or 2.0DDiS diesel engine.

The SX4 blends the compactcharacteristics of cars like theSwift with those of lightweightSUVs such as the Grand Vitara

to create more of a small carcrossover.

The UK line-up now offersthree SZ trim grades and twoengine options – the 120PS1.6-litre VVT petrol unit isavailable in either SZ3 or SZ42WD specification or as a 4x4SZ5 model with

selectable/automatic four-wheeldrive with prices from £11,750.

The latest 2.0-litre DDiS 4x4 isalso available as an SZ5, withsix-speed manual transmission,and costs £15,995.

All models have a bold SUVappearance with wheel archextensions, side under

protection mouldings and frontand rear skid plates.

SX4 comes well equipped asstandard with the SZ3 gradeoffering the likes of six airbags,remote central locking withdeadlocks, air-con, MP3compatible CD tuner with eightspeakers, four electric windows,

driver information display and litsteering wheel mounted audiocontrols.

This new diesel engine has anoutput of 135PS at 3,500rpm,achieving 51.4mpg on thecombined fuel consumptioncycle with co2 emissions of143g/km.

Citroen’s swishDS models willbe going on salenext year after

making its debut at theParis Motor Show laterthis month.

The announcement ofthe DS4 comes onlydays after Citroenrevealed a highperformance version ofthe current DS3 to rivalthe likes of the JohnCooper Works MINI.

Like the DS3 Racing,the new DS4 willfeature an upratedversion of the 1.6-litreTHP engine boosted toalmost 200bhp.

Despite its powerCitroen says emissionshave been kept low at149g/km although exactperformance data andprices are still to beannounced.

The new engine willjoin two other petrolengines and two dieselsin the DS4, including aneco 110bhp diesel fittedwith a stop/startsystem and other

energy saving featuresincluding an electronicgearbox.

Based on theforthcoming Citroen C4hatch, the DS4 will besharply styled andavailable in a number ofpersonalised formats.

Five combinations ofleather trim can bespecified including atwo-tone finish whilethe interior will featurechrome detailing,optional leather facingon the dashboard aswell as aluminiumpedals and ambientinterior lighting.

Styled as a 2+2 coupethe DS4 will be a fivedoor model with a 370litre boot boosted byfurther storage spaceinside including a litcentre console.
