AN evocative name frommotoring history isbeing revived by AlfaRomeo as the famousItalian marque turns

sale in a matter of weeks and intrue Alfa fashion it’s as sexy as it’ssporty.

The original Giulietta made itsdebut in 1954 and brought Alfamotoring to the masses.

Prior to that getting behind thewheel of an Alfa was the preserve ofthe elite with the Milan firmconcentrating on motoring racingand drivers such as Ascari,Nuvolari and Enzo Ferrari.

Steeped in history, the newGiulietta’s mission is to continueAlfa’s philosophy of cars whichblend technology and beauty.

Priced from £16,995 the Giuliettais a sleek, five door hatch which isstyled to impress.

Its sharp looks are emphasised atthe front with LED running lightsand Alfa’s trademark V-shapedgrille while at the back LED taillamps swirl across the tailgate.

Looking very much like a matureversion of the smaller MiTo, theGiulietta is part of a newgeneration of Alfa hatchbacks thathave been selling well since 2008.

It is up against the likes of theVW Golf, Audi A3 and Vauxhall’snew Astra and will be poweredeither by 1.4 and 1.75-litre petrolengines or 1.6 and two-litre diesels.

All are turbo boosted to packplenty of punch but it is the flagshipCloverleaf models which deliver thepure Alfa experience.

In this guise the Giulietta isavailable only with the potent1.75-litre engine boosted to pumpout 235bhp – that’s three-litre powerbut at 37.2mpg, the economy of a 1.6.

The Cloverleaf is Alfa’s racingemblem and the car itself is raw funto drive and nicely balanced.

Alfa’s DNA adaptive dynamicssystem is fitted to all Giuliettas andalters throttle and suspensionsettings at the push of a lever.

Engage the sporty dynamic modeon the Cloverleaf and the effect isan instant kick in the back. In thissports mode the Giulietta canaccelerate from 0 to 60mph in 6.8seconds with a top speed of 150mph– hot hatch performance inanyone’s book.

At £24,495 the Cloverleaf is themost expensive of the Giuliettarange which also comprisesTurismo, Lusso and Veloce models.

Boot capacity of 350 litres isusable but not over generous.

While the Cloverleaf is the modelwhich shows the best of AlfaRomeo’s pedigree, all engines do thejob and the 170bhp two-litre diesel isalmost as rapid with 0 to 60 in eightseconds bolstered by average fuelconsumption in the region of60mpg.

The greenest of the range is the1.6-litre diesel with CO2 emissionsdown to 114g/km and all but theCloverleaf at 177g/km have tailpipeoutputs rated below the 150g/kmmark.
