SUPER STYLE: The new Ford Focus in action

IT’S game over for the humblehatchback as Ford launches thenext generation of Britain’sfavourite car.

For more than a decade the Focushas ruled the roost in the salescharts and now there’s a new modelwhich is crammed with technology.

What began life as a replacementfor the venerable Escort back in 1998is now available with so much kitthat it can match the likes of a BMWor Mercedes limo for onboardequipment.

Among medium-sized familyhatches there has never been a carlike it.

Forward facing cameras, radarbeams and infra red sensors are allpart of an array of devices whichput the third version of the Focus ina league of its own.

All models come with airconditioning, digital radios,Bluetooth with voice control and asystem which Ford calls torquevectoring control.

Basically it is an electronicdifferential balancing the powerthrough the front wheels and itkeeps alive the Focus’s reputationfor top notch handling.

The new Focus goes on sale inMarch priced from £15,995 for a fivedoor hatch or £17,095 for an estate.There is no three-door model andFord has no plans to make one.

Those prices are some £500 lessthan the previous entry levelversions cost but at the top end ofthe range a high grade Titanium X

model is being introduced taking theFocus hatch to a high of £23,995 for atwo-litre diesel automatic or £25,095for a similarly powered estate.

And it is the top trim models forwhich the high tech options arereserved, pushing the price of a fullyloaded Focus to some £28,000.

That may sound crazy for a familyhatch but in this guise the car isventuring into a new division.

At this level you have a carequipped with digital sat nav, activecruise control, an anti collisionsystem to prevent rear end shunts intraffic, a device which stops the cardrifting out of lanes, blind spotalerts and a fatigue monitor.

Even a full blown executivedownsizing from the likes of a BMW7 Series would be impressed at whatis available on the new Focus. Poundfor pound it’s a steal.

But this car is more than justpushing the boundaries of smallcars into the big car zone.

The new Focus has to satisfy thedemands of its loyal army of fanswho have become accustomed to itsall-round soundness while for Fordit is a car on a mission as thecompany’s first global model whichin one form or another will be soldin more than 120 countries.

In Britain the car will be available

with a choice of three petrol enginesand four diesels.

On the petrol front the entry levelEdge and mid-range Zetec versionswill use a 105PS 1.6-litre enginewhile Ford’s 150PS 1.6 EcoBoost willslot into the Titanium models.

The turbocharged EcoBoost is agreat engine and endows the Focus

with rewarding performance andgood economy averaging 47.1mpgwith a 0-60 time of 8.6 seconds.

It uses stop/start technology toreduce emissions and like all of thenew Focuses comes with anelectronic shutter in the radiatorgrille which improves aerodynamicsand engine performance.

The EcoBoost has a CO2 output of139g/km which matches that of the16PS 2.0-litre diesel also available inthe Titanium versions – and asindication of just how green theFocus is, that diesel has the highestoutput of all the engines being usedin the model at the moment.

The most economical is a 1.6-litrediesel – available in both 95 and115PS outputs - which will return67.3mpg.

Slightly longer and wider – butlower – than the current model thenew car remains roomy inside,seating five with good leg oom in therear.

Going topless is getting cheaper

AT the tail end of the 19thcentury Oscar Wildefamously told the worldthat he could resistanything but temptation.

Well a mere 118 years later theFrench car manufacturer Peugeot,not previously noted for producingitems of irresistible allure, hascome up with a truly compellingpackage.

The RCZ coupe is a car capable ofgracing the world’s premierautomotive catwalks – and comingaway with the cream. It’s thatcultured.

Elegant and aerodynamic are thetwo words that probably best sumup the RCZ’s profile. It’s low slung,sleek and in my view the bestlooking car outside the realms ofmegabucks exotica.

From the ‘double bubble’ lid andrear windscreen to the distinctivealuminium roof arches, the RCZ’slines flow seamlessly from top to

toe. It just looks classy from everyangle.

And if the car’s shape isn’taerodynamic enough there’s also anactive rear spoiler that appearsautomatically at speeds of morethan 53mph and folds back below34mph.

Its angle even adjusts for highspeed stability and there’s also abutton next to the handbrake tomanually raise the spoiler.

Move inside and Peugeot hascontinued the design-led themewith a gently sloping fascia, softtexture, neat analogue clock and

sporty touches like a chunkyflat-bottomed steering wheel anddrilled alloy pedals.

The two rear seats are strictly forkids, little ones at that, but the bigsurprise is the size of the boot –refreshingly decent for a smallcoupe and capable of stowing 760litres when the back seats are down.

You get plenty of kit as standard,so the only options I would add arethe Solstice Onyx black 19-inchalloy wheels at £305 and the blackbrake callipers for another £155 –they really look the business.

Of course all this sexy style is nogood if the car has popgunperformance, and thankfully there’sno danger of that, as the testedmodel’s new 1.6-litre THP 200bhpengine combines a twin-scrollturbocharger, direct petrol injectionand variable inlet valve lift.

Upshot is a 0-62mph accelerationtime of 7.6 seconds and claimedaverage fuel consumption of 40.9

miles per gallon, though my ownfigure was 34.9.

It sounds funky too thanks to adevelopment of the RCZ’s acousticswhich, a bit like a musicalinstrument, produce differentharmonics depending on the rate ofacceleration.

Out on the road the Peugeot is a

treat to drive with lots of composureand serious grip through bendsthough you have to be prepared fora firm ride.

The THP 200 costs £25,595 and isworth every penny, , but you don’thave to pay that much – the RCZrange starts with the Sport THP 156at £20,895.

THE price of big 4x4s iscontinuing to rise but open topmotoring is becoming cheaper,according to motor marketanalysts.

A survey by experts at CAPhas revealed the cost of a newcoupe cabriolet fell by anaverage of almost £1,000 over

the past year.But the average new price of a

4x4 rose by more than £1,800over the same period.

The average cost of a newcoupe cabriolet in January 2011was £21,999 compared to anaverage of £22,941 a year before.

The average new price of a

4x4, however, rose over theperiod from £31,634 to £33,459.

CAP New Vehicle Datamanager, David Saville, said:“Coupe cabriolets have beenreducing in price while list pricesacross the rest of the markethave typically risen.”

Saville says that coupe

cabriolets had become a victimof their own success.

“The growing popularity inrecent years of coupe cabrioletssuch as the Focus CC, AstraTwin Top and Peugeot 308CChas made them a much morecommon sight on our roads andon the forecourt.”
