over from Dr ZweliMkhize as premier ofKwaZulu–Natal.Mkhize is now theANC treasurer-–gen-eral full time.

On 7 October, thethen provincial legis-lature speaker, PeggyNkonyeni, was an-nounced as the KZNEducationMEC,apo-sition made vacantwhen Mchunu as-cended to the pre-miership position.NOMPENDULONGUBANE took to thestreet to findoutwhatpeople have to sayabout the appoint-ments.

“As a taxi driver I hopethat Mchunu looks at usas people who can be ofassistance in some of thegovernment departmentssuch as the Departmentof Health. We have gooddriving skills which wouldbe useful in driving ambulances. We would be happy with that opportunity. As for Nkonyeni, I believethat as a woman she willdo a good job.”

“Mchunu must firstly tackle the corruption that isgoing on in almost all ofthe government departments. He must fight nepotism and the high unemployment rate. As Imbaliresidents, some of us arein need of houses and weare faced with bad roadconditions that must befixed.”

“Maybe Mchunu will dobetter as premier. There’snot much that he didwhile he was still Education MEC. except abolishingschool trips last year afterthere was an accident thatkilled some pupils. Maybeas premier, there will bevisible things a person canlook at and say “it’sMchunu’s hard work” butfor now there’s nothing atall.”

“Mchunu has been in politics for too long and Itrust that with such experience, he will do a greatjob. It’s the same withNkonyeni, she has been inpolitics for a long time soshe will excel in her job.”

SIYABONGA MSHENGU

The Arts and Culture Department should learn to take our artists seriously

WHEN the ANC established its department of arts and culture(DAC) in 1982, it was not just a

mere amorphous and ludicrous gesture, but it was initiated to mobilise South African cultural workers at home and abroad. It was also to engage a broad range of people in the culture of protest and resistance, its goal broadly being the democratictransformation of arts and culture in ourcountry.

For decades instruments of division andsubjugation, arts and culture were seen bythe DAC as unifying tools of liberation forall South Africans. In 1993 the Culture and Development Conferences (CDC), convened by former ANCpresident Oliver Tambo, was held in Johannesburg, primarily to draw up an inclusiveand nonsectarian national arts and culture policy for South Africa. The importantthing about CDC is that it was not concerned with questions of liberation, butthat of governance. Some of its objectives were: to bring to

gether creative workers from across thecultural and political spectrum and provide a showcase for their work and creations, and to provide a platform for allstakeholders to make their contribution todeveloping a new culture dispensation.

The call for a ministry of arts and culturewas sounded at this conference, and shortly after the election, the ministry wasformed with Dr. Ben Ngubane at the headand Winnie Mandela as his deputy. All theabove mentioned efforts demanded a lotof seriousness, commitment and dedication on the part of the ANC, and it was nota child’s play. But since the attainment of our freedom

in 1994, it seems as if our department ofarts and culture has forgotten that it wascreated on the premise of transformingSouth Africa’s cultural landscape for thebetter. Our artists are perishing in destitution in the presence of the DAC. Artistic andcultural organisations struggle to get financial assistance from the department. The reason being that it is highly bureaucratic and this bureaucracy being the maincause of its inefficiency and dysfunctionality. These faceless, cynical and jealous offi

cials with their red tape, who perceive andtreat arts and culture with frivolity and insensitivity, are the chief stumbling block tothe development of our artists. Let alonetheirnotbeingpassionateandknowledgeable about the arts, they are there, just likeany other employees, to support their families.Foryears, ItogetherwithlocaljazzguitaristZazi Mncube, bass player Langa Mthalane,Vusi Msomi and Sabelo Mwandla, both theactors, tried to approach the departmentto assist our Take Four Musical Organisation, to no avail. This transpired despite thefact that we had all the required documentation. When we realized that they wereutterly reluctant to assist us, it became vividly clear to us that pestering them was afutile exercise.

Bhekabona Qwabe, the late freelancedrummer, and Smanga Zibula, the guitarist for the local jazz band, Fate for Africa, are some of our highly talented musicianswho died without having been supportedin their creative endeavours. Even the artists who called themselves, uMgungundlo

vu Concerned Artists, under the chairmanship of Kwenza Mthembu, in June this year, raised this matter of our artists being takenfor granted by the department, with theMEC for Arts and Culture, NtombikayiseSibhidla Saphetha. These departments of ours are very good

in terms of returning funds allocated tothem back to the National Treasury, butextremely incompetent when it comes tospending them to the benefit of eligiblepeople. South Africa is a land of plenty, soseeing our artists suffering is iniquitous. But then how do we expect our artists in

this part of the world to flourish when ourvery current national minister of arts andculture, Paul Mashatile, regarded his appointment to head the ministry, as a political demotion? Do you think our honourable minister who feels as having been relegated can work diligently to address theplight of our creative workers? Do our municipalities together with their ward councillors comprehend the importance of thearts in their communities?I received with jubilation the news that

Winston Churchill Theatre had been revamped. But how do we take pride in thephysical structure of the hospital withoutcherishing health practitioners, and isn’t ridiculous to admire a university’s exquisiteness and denigrate its lecturers?South Africa has a high rate of unemployment, and in the ranks of the unemployedwe have artists who only need governmentsupport to do their creative work, whichcould help in the reduction of unemployment. Even the private sector has the social responsibility to assist our artists. Howdo you explain the philanthropy characterized by selectivity, the philanthropist whocan’t operate without the media? Shouldour good Samaritans be selective in termsof rescuing the indigent artists? Should thewhole world know when I have been assisted, and is being generous quietly not beneficial or an anathema? I don’t think knowing why some of our philanthropists can’tbe dissociated from politicians, and vice

versa, is a problem. The indispensability of the arts in human

existence is indisputable, and music is aclassic example: weddings, parties, celebrations, churches, funerals, political gatherings, electronic media, schools and othersettings, music plays a pivotal role and isunavoidable. The contribution of our musicians in the political struggle can never bedisdained and trivialised.

Our theatres have always been sacredspaces because our stories, poems, musicand dance have been soldiers that escalated the liberation struggle which ultimatelydismantled oppression. Theatre in SouthAfrica has always been a dynamic forumthat has given us courage to grapple withthe state of our nation. Our writers, standup comedians, satirists and communitybased artists have utilised their immenseand remarkable talents to create and nurture a climate that has allowed us all tobecome active participants in our democracy.

Our artists are our nation’s conscience;they give us a window on our world, butalso give us glimpse of an imaginary world. They have incredible gift of uniting us allin a common celebration of humanitywhen we are able to laugh, cry, feel sorrowand experience hope.Musa Nkuna, a supremely gifted South African opera singer, says: “We are culture, wedefine our own culture, and we are responsible for our culture. Because culture is social glue that keeps societies and communities together, any little crack will causethings to fall apart. We earnestly entreat and appeal to the

department of arts and culture to changetheir attitude towards our artists, thisthing of belittling our artists should cometo an end. Our society, as well, should takearts and culture seriously, for the nationthat doesn’t embrace its cultural aspect isdoomed to deteriorate.

Former Edendalebusinessman dies

A SEGMENT of Edendale’s history cametolightwiththedeaththismonthofCar-ol Sebastian, who was affectionately

known to residents in the area as “M’Christiana”.

Sebastian was a businessman who livedand ran a general dealer shop in Georgetownuntil 1981. His family was among the last ofthe Indian families tomove out of the area be-cause of the enforcement of the Group AreasAct.

Sebastian(82)diedafterashort illnessandhis funeral was held last week at theRaisethorpe Catholic Church.

When he moved out of Edendale, a largefarewell party was held in his honour.

The functionwas reported inTheWitness.Thearticle said theSebastianswereverypop-ular in Edendale while they operated theirgeneral dealer business for more than 25years. It added that because of his Christianhabits, the local community gave Sebastianthe nickname of “M’Christiana”.

Accordingtothereport,MrP.A.C.Mseleku,a church member, said Sebastian “was lovedand honoured” by most of his customers andthis boosted his business. “He treated all whocamehisway as humanbeings, thus present-ing amodel lesson in race relations,”Mselekusaid.

Induna in the area Johannes Simelane de-livered a speech, honouring the family and“presentedM’Christiana with a walking stickand meat tray, while another speaker, MrsE.M. Cele, presented him with a clock and acarvingofclaspedhandsinaprayinggesture”,the report said.

Sebastian’s son, John, said that when hisfatherwent to church for the first timeatStAl-bert’s Mission in Esigodini, the priest ap-proached him and inquired if he was a Chris-tian.

“Theparishionerswereof theopinion thatall Indian businessmenwere non-Christians.Upon establishing that my father was indeeda man of their own faith, they called himM’Christianaandreferredtothestoreas ‘Isto-lo Kwa Christiaan’.”

Pirates only need a scoring draw to reachthe final phase of the tournament.

A fortnight ago the Soweto giants played toa goaless draw at Orlando Stadium during thefirst leg of the semi final.

Reaching the Champions League final andwinningitwill surelybringbackgoodoldmem-ories to Pirates dies-hards when they claimedit in 1995.

Pirates former star defender, Motale be-lieves the SA side

is standing a good chance to make it to thefinals, but will have to dig deep, be united andbe strong mentally and physically.

“Thefirst thingtheymustunderstandisthatthere’s a lot in stake. The opponents are likelytodoanything just toplaymindgames for themto lose focus.

“The players must also remember what isthe meaning

of reaching the CAF Champions League fi-nal. Conquering Africa and earning anotherstarwillbeground-breakingandanotherhisto-ry for Pirates as an SA side.

“Personally, I thinkthisteamcangothroughandwinprovided that theyplay likea team, diefor one another from the first whistles.

“For me, I think, with a strong and rightmentallity they

are standing a good chance,” said Motale. He further said the only thing that carried

Pirates through during their “old glory” dayswas “unity and brotherhood”.

Pirates assistant coach, Teboho Moloi saidhisteamwasreadyforthebigstageandagruel-ling encounter away. He said the only way towinistohaveawinningmentalityandgoingfora kill.

“It’s an away game andwon’t be easy at allbutwecanwin it ifweplaywith the right frameof mind and attitude.

“In games like this the attitude and strongmentality countsa lot togo through,”explainedMoloi.

Lekgwathi had with the head coach, Roger DeSa and other techical team members are nowsorted and if he is in the good shape to play.

His presence and his leadership skills areneeded in the team. A plus for Pirates is thattheir industrious midfielder, Thandani Ntshu-mayelo will be fit to play.

TALKINGFOOTBALL

PRESENTLY, the majority of us seek more faults andweaknesses than solutions for South African football. We are failing to understand that the future and thestrength of our game depends on everyone involved. We need to move away from the thinking that individuals can provide all solutions. It is not by chance thatother nations are doing well. There is always the rightor correct way of doing things. South Africans muststart to do things the right way. This is a simple formula for success. We cannot claim to be a football loving nation whilethere are no facilities. Government cannot claim tobe behind football while facilities in most areas areeither in disrepair or nonexistent. Players need decent training and competition fields to develop theirskills.ThenumbersthatDannyJordanistalkingaboutin terms of players and matches will not materialise

without facilities. We are a country that has no respect for sports. It

is the last thing in our priorities. We find it easy to erecttents and park vehicles thereby destroying the turf.People do not understand the value of quality facilities in terms of training and competition. It is also obvious that the understanding and appreciation forquality fields will take many years to materialize. Ittakes some time to change the thinking through training and education.A country that hosted the top world footballers in

2010 has no business subjecting their children to playunder dangerous conditions. We cannot be talking ofunmarked fields with uncut turf in 2013. The conditionsdonotencourageouryoung totakeupthis beautiful game. I think we spend a lot of energy talkingabout useless rights for young people. The right toplay and develop sporting skills is being violated inour country.Football is more about what happens inside the fieldthan many useless things people talk about. It isabout dominating the ball and making the right decisions. Football is both an art and science. Young people therefore need to be trained to develop their abilities. Trainers/ coaches themselves need to be empowered with knowledge and skills. We need to develop a culture of excellence in football.Managers, referees, coaches and players should striveto do their best. Aristotle says: “We are what we repeatedly do; excellence then is not an act but a habit.”If nations like Germany and Brazil can do it, nothingcan stop us.Unzima lo mthwalo!
