As I sit here writing this letter, I’m amidst a level of chaos that only a bride and her bridal party are aware of. Most of my closest friends had already taken the plunge down the aisle of eternity long before I created the magazine. And now, in just over a week, one of my best friends will be finally saying, “I do” to her dearest. And whom did she elect to be her Maid of Honor? Yours truly. And no matter how many times I try to tell her that I’m merely a writer and marketer, I have a sneaking suspicion that she still expects me to manage the coordination when it’s all said and done.

Now, it’s one thing to write about novel ideas for your big day. Or to feature images of a great day long after the festivities have died down. It’s quite another to know you are one week from the wedding, and making sure everyone is aware of the schedule. And who is handling the drinks? Did we remember to bring enough favors for every table? What if Aunt Rhonda doesn’t want to sit near Uncle Bill? And is there going to be ample food? What time can we start setting up and who’s handling the cleanup when the music stops and everyone just wants to drop? It’s been so long since I’ve been right in the midst of all the hustle, and all I can say is kudos to the coordinators who deal with all the details! It has been an eye-opening experience to say the least, and I’m so thankful that my bestie is simply taking it in stride and hasn’t resorted to Bridezilla measures yet! If I can do no other service for her that day other than to explain how much she should simply enjoy the day and not stress about a single thing, then I’ll say my job has been done. Okay, that, and somehow write an Emmy award-winning toast for the reception. No pressure, though. So, that’s the message I wanted to send in this issue. When it’s all said and done, the thing you came to do that day (saying your vows) will be done, and the rest is just icing on the cake. Remember it’s all about celebrating the love two people are sharing and professing to their world. That’s really the only thing that matters. And if anything goes wrong, you know you’ll at least get a memorable story out of it! But, if you’re like me, and have a tendency to over think and analyze every minute detail, then the second best piece of advice I can o!er is to hire a planner! After all, it’s what their trained to do, and I promise you’ll be shocked at just how smoothly the day and all it’s details will flow. How did you two meet? Bride: We were both out with friends at Power & Light. Our eyes met, and he gave me the cutest smile. We talked and danced the rest of the night, and he asked me out on a date before we parted ways. Groom: I was at Power & Light with a couple of friends and saw her dancing. She immediately caught my attention and I was able to muster up enough courage to go talk to her. How long did it take to realize he/she was the one? B: I knew early on. I felt comfortable with him immediately, and it was as if we had known each other forever. G: After the first couple of dates, I realized she had the qualities I was looking for and everything just clicked with our personalities. I knew she would be my wife someday. How do you two make it work? B: It’s a combination of things. We are supportive of each other’s goals and have grown a lot as a couple. Communication is key and so is a lot of laughter.

G: I believe it is good communication and being able to compromise. It is important to know how the other person feels and find a middle ground. What do you plan to splurge on with the wedding?

B: We decided to get a wedding planner. Planning can get very overwhelming and having an expert to help us with everything and bounce ideas o! of has been great. The photography was also very important to me.

G: The honeymoon. We are going to Kauai, HI for a week and we couldn’t be more excited. What has surprised you most about the planning process? B: How fast everything books up! We aren’t having a very long engagement, so we have had to make decisions on important things, like the venue, fairly quickly. G: The number of decisions that need to be made throughout the process. We want everyone to have a great time so there is quite a bit of pressure.

What was the best thing about your wedding? Bride: Our wedding was beautiful. It was intimate, romantic and not overshadowed but any of the traditional wedding stress. It was a moment created just for the two of us and we were able to enjoy each other without any distractions. Groom: The best thing about our wedding was the lack of stress and worry I often hear friends talk about in their past wedding experiences. When our day came the only two people I had to worry about was my beautiful bride and I. Looking back on it, what would you have done di!erently? B: I would have asked the resort for a sunset ceremony. The Dominican sun at 11:30am was brutal! G: Not a thing. Everything about it went as planned and the icing on it all was the beautiful weather we got for our day. What’s the biggest di!erence in your relationship now that you are married? B: Once reality set in, I would look at Kevin and get a sense of comfort knowing that he is my family now. I had always viewed Kevin as family but once we made it o"cial we became a family. G: I would have to say our thinking in our relationship has changed. We now understand that practically all decisions made, no matter how big or small, require us to think about the e!ect it will have on us both.

What is the best part about marriage? B: The best part is when Kevin calls me his wife. I am very proud to have that title. There are still times when it doesn’t feel real. Each time I hear it I can’t help but smile. G: My favorite part of marriage is how we push each other to be better. The desire to give one another a better life constantly motivates us to keep growing and become better versions of ourselves. What is the hardest part about marriage? B: For me it’s finding the balance between the ‘pre-marriage’ fun and the content feeling you have once you are married. We’re so happy just being together that sometimes it takes a little nudge to keep introducing new experiences. G: The most di"cult part of marriage is the selfishness that can sometimes make its di"cult to compromise. Communication is key to working around this though. Great communication allows you to see situations from your partners point of view.

What is the biggest di!erence in your relationship now that you have been married for several years? Bride: We don’t do the whole party scene anymore. We just grew out of it and realized living more pleasingly to God was far more important to us. We wanted our marriage/relationship to be built on a rock and not on sand. Living more for Christ is the only way to do so. Groom: We are satisfied just being together in the comfort of our own home. We don’t have to always be going somewhere to have fun. We have lots of fun with just the two of us at home. We listen to a lot more Christian music and a lot less rap and rock and roll. Haha! What is the most surprising di!erence between dating and marriage? B: We actually fought a lot more when we were just dating, as funny as that seems. Of course we

were younger then too though. It seems like now we just get each other a lot more. We also started going to church together. We try to put God into our everyday situations and we pray together. G: There is not much di!erence other than the fact that I wear a ring now and our lifestyle has definitely changed. What do you remember most from your wedding day? B: Seeing Bret for the first time. How handsome he looked in his tux and the look on his face when he first saw me. The music. Having all of our families there to celebrate our big day together. Taking pictures was a big part of our day. We had lots of fun memories taking pictures around Big Cedar Lodge (where we were married and where we were engaged too). It is one of our favorites places to be. It is just beautiful. G: The number one thing I remember from our wedding day is how beautiful my wife looked and all the pictures we took. If you could do it all over again, what would you do di!erently? B: I would have spent more time on my hair, would have made it bigger and better. I would have moved our wedding outside at Big Cedar Lodge (we were married in a log cabin chapel there) the church was nice but I just wish we had done it outside over looking the Table Rock Lake at Big Cedar. Plus being a photographer, I now know that dark churches are no good for lighting for good wedding pictures. Outdoors at sunset is always the best lighting. G: I thought our wedding day was pretty perfect. If I had to change something it would be to choose a di!erent location at Big Cedar. Any advice for other couples? B: 1. Do everything you do with this in mind, “Would I like it if he did that?” 2. Keep God in your marriage and everyday lives. 3. Pray together G: Keep God in your lives and you will have a great marriage.

blissQuestion: My question is in regard to social media. My girlfriends and I have all received at one time or another either a facebook message or tweet with an attached photo of someone doing something “funny” at a wedding or wedding reception. Sometimes the photos are of the bride and/or groom and they are not always flattering. I am getting married next summer and I don’t want my guests to send out photos of us at our wedding and reception. Is there a tactful way to ask my guests not to send a facebook message, tweet or photo of our wedding and reception? Answer: The use of social media has become a real concern for many brides, grooms and their families. Unfortunately not everyone uses good judgment when it comes to sending out photos or comments via social media. Add alcohol into the mix and sometimes the end result can be hurtful. Most brides and grooms hire a professional photographer or videographer to capture their special day. These professionals know how to capture lasting memories through photos and videos. That is why we use their services and pay for their abilities. My suggestion would be to either make a tactful or funny sign that is placed in the entry of your reception venue that reads “Please respect the wishes of the bride and groom and refrain from sending facebook or twitter messages, as well as photos of their wedding and reception” or it might read “Please allow the love birds to tweet their own messages and photos”. Most of your guests will respect your wishes. If you don’t want to go with a sign another option would be to include a printed card in your invitation that expresses your wishes. Good luck and please let me know how you decided to handle this issue as I am hearing more and more about this concern.

Ask Irene? Question: My daughter and I found the perfect venue for her wedding reception. It is beautiful and professionally managed. We would like to reserve the venue, but we don’t understand their policy regarding the host bar we plan to provide our guests. We believe we will have about 120 adult guests and about 25 children of various ages. The venue we would like to reserve has a minimum on the number of guests that we must pay for on all food and beverages regardless of their age. That minimum is 150. We understand that we have to pay for the 150 on the meals and all non-alcoholic beverages, but we do not understand why we have to pay for 150 on the alcoholic beverages since about 25 of our guests will be children. The manager of the venue said they use an industry standard to determine how to charge for host bars and they are not charging for alcohol for children. He said “it all evens out in the end”. What do you think of this policy and do you believe it to be an industry standard? Answer: I certainly understand your concern about purchasing alcohol for anyone under legal drinking age, but let me assure you there isn’t a venue around that I know of that would risk their liquor license in order to charge for alcohol for children. It is indeed an industry standard to charge for a required minimum number of guests for host bars. Some of your adult guests may not drink any alcohol, some may drink one or two and some may drink, well you know……more than their fair share. So, like the manager said “it all evens out in the end”. If you have ordered an alcoholic beverage in a restaurant or bar lately you know alcoholic beverages can be very costly. A host bar that requires you to pay for a minimum number of guests can certainly be cost e!ective and to your advantage. Even when it is believed that “many of our guests won’t be drinking” you may be surprised at the number of alcoholic drinks consumed during a four to 6 hour reception by those that do! Hope this helps and I hope you can reserve that “perfect venue” for your daughter’s special day.

Your wedding is NOT the time to experiment with hair color from the grocery store. Six months prior to your big day discuss your color ideas with a reliable stylist. Your hair color should be done no more than 2 weeks prior to the wedding, that way you look great for everything leading up to the day.

– Jenny Thomas, Last Tangle Salon Don’t wait until the last moment to get waxed. You should schedule an appointment least once or twice before doing it for the wedding. This will allow you to be certain that you don’t have allergies related to waxing. You will also be able to see how long it takes for your skin to react after the process. Once the week comes of your wedding schedule your waxing 2-3 days in advance.

– Malena, The Wax Pot Be cautious of your guests when scheduling the start time of the ceremony and reception. Having a break between the two can leave guests wondering what they should do until the beginning of the reception. If there is several hours of dead time, then set up a private room at a restaurant or pub to allow family and friends to gather and visit while you are taking photos.

Think outside the box. With everything. You want your guests leaving saying ‘man that was perfectly them!’ So implement what you love into your wedding. It’s ok and SO admired and inspirational to see a creative wedding. Looking for simple? Try a backyard wedding. Or a poolside wedding where your family can all potluck yet have fancy displays for the food. Thinking destination? Have an open house reception back home for your family and friends to come eat some cake and see your new place! Just remember, YOU have the right to do anything you want on your wedding day. The sky is the limit!

– Jana Marler, Jana Marie Photography Setting aside the argument of whether children should or should not be included in a wedding invitation, some brides choose not to exclude kids from their celebration. Those children may be a valued member of their very close knit family. Other times, couples don’t want to discourage their close friends with children from attending, especially those who may live out of town and have no choice but to bring their kids along. Regardless of motivation, if you plan to have children at your wedding reception, here are two important considerations. First, make certain that your DJ is given advance notice that children may be attending, especially if you expect more than six children under the age of 10 years old. Second, knowing that children can sometimes become a dinner-time distraction as they transform a dance floor into a noisy, impromptu play area, make certain that your DJ is prepared to entertain those kids with fun activities or kid friendly dances. With the proper DJ entertainment, guests will enjoy twenty minutes or so of cute “Ahhh” moments that are not only memorable but are great photo opportunities, as well..

Keep your rehearsal dinner nice and intimate. Look for a venue that can comfortably accommodate all of your guests. Crowded and noisy restaurants can often be distracting (and expensive); think outside the box and choose a place where you and your friends and family can dine, relax and socialize on your timeline in preparation of your big day!

Then, you are able to see those in all lights and choose which one is the exact shade to fit your vision.

When there is a chance of rain for your outdoor wedding, have a back up plan and remember that the most important thing about this day is that you are joining hands with the one you love and with whom you will spend the rest of your life. Focus on the big picture when things don’t go as planned.

Do you remember being a little girl and dreaming about your wedding dress? What it would look like? How you would look in it? Many brides daydreamed when they were young about their perfect day…and often find themselves planning their wedding hoping to fit into the perfect dress. I train several brides who come to me with the goal of having their perfect dress fit like a glove. We come up with di!erent training programs to help meet their needs; one program that has grabbed bride’s attention is hula-hoop training. How many of us spent hours swiveling our hips with a hula-hoop not knowing how e!ective that thin plastic toy could be at helping to shape our waistlines. Its so simple it almost seems too easy! Grab a hoop and swivel away and over time that waistline starts to take shape!!! OK it’s not quite that easy…but with a few “twists” here is a snapshot of an e!ective way to fit into that dress! We used a weighted hoop that was filled with water for extra resistance. In combination with overall strength training and cardio using this hoop a few minutes a day has helped shrink the waistlines of some of the brides I am preparing for their debut in their special dress. And its silly fun! It helps strengthen not only the core muscles but side obliques as well, or those “hourglass” muscles that help shape waistlines. So while you are getting stronger your body is starting to take shape in preparation for the big reveal on your wedding day! As a trainer I am constantly trying to come up with new and exciting ways to keep brides motivated on their fitness journey. This can be challenging when clients come to me that have big goals ahead of them and the deadline of a wedding day fast approaching. The one common thread I have found is every bride remembers being a little girl with dreams of her wedding day. So taking that sense of wonder and adventure and combining it with the basic exercises that we considered “fun” at age 10 and voila! The hula-hoop workout! When this has been combined with lunges, squats, some upper body resistance, and a clean eating plan the results are happy brides at their dress fittings! So if you are planning your big day, or participating in someone else’s keep this “child like” workout idea in mind as you create your plan of attack for fitting into the perfect dress! It was a night of pure enchantment. It was late July, the weather was perfect, and it seemed everyone had stars in their eyes as they filled The Faultless Event Space for an evening filled with paying it forward. There was a flurry of excitement as everyone circled around all of the silent auction items in anticipation of the grand event: The Live Experience Package Auction. The Make-a-Wish Foundation put this soiree together in a valiant e!ort to raise the funds necessary to grant wishes to children su!ering from serious ailments, and who couldn’t otherwise be a!orded the opportunity to live out their childhood dreams. The Foundation, aware of the EA Angel’s program, reached out to see if we could put together a package for participants to bid on, of which the proceeds would be entirely donated to the Foundation. Fortunately, we are surrounded by a great group of professionals, who love giving back to the community at large. And while our EA Angels projects are usually designated for deserving couples planning a wedding, we couldn’t resist the opportunity to help another amazing cause, and enlisted the help of those we knew would also rise to the occasion. In fact, we had such a outpouring of support on this mission, we were able to put together two incredible packages. The first was entitled the “Signature Soiree.” On behalf of Irene Sparks, owner of The Hawthorne House, she donated her exquisite facility and decadent food for any available evening left in 2013.

They will be transported back and forth thanks to Pech Limousine, and finish o! the night with a six-course meal and wine catered by a Private Chef and server, courtesy of Delish Catering. And thanks to the brand new Bu!alo Lodge, they don’t have to cut their night short, as they have graciously donated a private stay for the duo at their lodge, leaving the two of them to reminisce about the events of the day well into the wee hours of the night! At the end of the event, we were proud to say that our packages raised the most money for the Make-a-Wish Foundation. HOW TOAll couples who live in close proximity fight! It can be normal and even healthy. What matters is HOW you fight. Just like in a boxing match there are rules or guidelines that both opponents much abide by. The same should apply to couples. Each relationship should have a rulebook on how to fight fairly. Here are some simple rules, but they will vary with each individual depending on their background, personality, and temperament. Rules for everyone: 1. No screaming 2. No name-calling 3. No hitting 4. No throwing things 5. Leave your gloves on at all times When you fight it’s important to be thinking, “WIN, WIN”. Remember, you are on the same team. It’s not about winning the argument, or putting the other in their place. It’s about coming to an agreement that works for you and your partner. Too many times when we are fighting we are thinking in our mind, “I am going to set them straight, or get them to understand me.” The problem is that your partner is typically thinking the same thing … when instead you BOTH should be SEEKING to understand each other rather than be UNDERSTOOD. We fight, or should fight, to RESOLVE issues, not to put the other down! Let’s be real here; no two people are exactly alike, and that means there are going to be times in the relationship that you do not see eye to eye, and that is okay. You can have a wonderful relationship without agreeing on every single issue. Mutually you must come to an understanding or common ground, but you can still be an individual with thoughts of your own! Bottom line: Don’t lose heart if you and your partner are disagreeing, it’s all part of the process of getting to know one another, just make sure to fight fairly, set the rules (what is expectable in the fight, and what is not) and live by those rules!

recently gone through the experience and find what happened throughout their planning process that would enable them to better their own craft. What resulted was a night of enlightenment and education straight from the source. On the eve of August 19th, the beautiful event space, Black on Burlington, was gracious enough to host a group of professionals eager to be educated. We all mingled, sipped a few cocktails, and indulged in far too many hor dourves compliments of Above and Beyond Catering, before it was time to get down to business. Hosted by Jon Bartlett of Remix DJ’s and Craig Loftis of Elite Sounds Entertainment, they rounded up a vibrant and insightful group of recent brides, including Amie Bartley, Claire Reagan, Rachel Green, and Claire Shaver. Poised and ready to answer anything thrown at them, the interrogation began. By the end of the questions, we walked away with a much clearer picture of what was most important to our target market, the bride. Some of the biggest points we noted were: 1. Although the wedding budgets ranged from 20,000 – 45,000, the areas most felt they overspent were on food and beverage. 2. Videography came up more than once as the area brides wished they’d invested more of their big day dollars. 3. Many didn’t realize until after the reception just how important the DJ was in making or breaking the reception. 4. The biggest disappointment overall through the process was the lack of follow-up on the part of the professionals. When they didn’t get a call back, they moved on. 5. Brides love samples of professional work. Whether you’re a florist or photographer or caterer, make sure you have a full collection of your work to showcase. 6. The best form of communication with the couple is via email.

Our love story started after Krissy Budish, a co-worker of Jay’s and a client of mine played matchmaker. She gave us each other’s info, and we connected through Facebook and eventually met face to face at the Chiefs Monday Night Football Game. There was an immediate connection, and we spent the rest of the evening together. I knew I had a keeper when on my way to drop him o! that night it was pouring down rain, and on the highway I ran over something that got stuck underneath my car. When I pulled over, on the side of the busy highway, he immediately got out of the car, in the pouring rain, looked under the front of the car, sat down, and proceeded to put both feet on the front bumper and yanked out a huge chunk of a semi tire out from underneath it. It was pretty hot to see him pull o! such a manly move in the monsoon of rain. I was praying I would have many more moments with this man. The next day we met for brunch and got to know each other a bit better. Jay, was a pilot, who worked out of the downtown airport, and a small town guy from Albia, Iowa. And myself, a stylist and business owner, who worked out in south Overland Park. I was from a small town as well, Wright, Kansas. We both seemed to have had a very similar upbringing, built on family tradition, strong values and morals. Jay was everything I was looking for in a man. Tall, dark and handsome, no kids, never married, had a job, went to church, opens doors for me, liked my little dog, I could go on and on, he was every check on my list, and then some. He probably would tell you he fell for me after he found out I could cook and bake! After many dates, Chiefs games, meeting each other’s family, there was no question that we would stay together for the long haul. Jay had a work trip flying to Turk’s and Caicos, in March of 2012, he had me fly down and meet him there. After a few days and nights of fun on the island, we had one very special night. Jay took me out to a nice dinner, and then back to the hotel. When I walked into the room there was tropical flower petals, strawberries, and champagne! I knew something was about to happen. We hung out for quite some time on the balcony, enjoying the ocean view, drinking the entire bottle of champagne, and still nothing. Finally when I was ready to call it a night he was down on one knee and proposed. Six months later, after lots of planning, we married at Belvoir Winery on October 6.

Their story began in college. The two met on Halloween night. Chris sported a Tigger costume and Bobbie was, ironically, not feeling well and dressed in a nurse costume. They talked briefly and felt comfortable right away. The two did not meet again until the following year in August, when they moved into the same apartment complex. Their first o"cial lunch date started o! slowly, as Chris was starving and as a result was not much for conversation. However, after the food settled he started to open up. Right away the two spent most of their time together, sharing most meals and driving to class and the library together. Bobbie graduated the following May and moved back to Kansas City. Since Chris had a year left of school, the two maintained a long distance relationship. After Chris’ graduation, he started working for a company in St. Louis (his hometown). This position eventually o!ered an opportunity for him to transfer to Kansas City. Together again at last! The couple moved into an apartment together. After getting comfortable with the idea of living together, they introduced a new member to their household. His name is Dexter. He is a crazy, hilarious, stubborn, sweet terrier mix they adopted from a local dog rescue. In November of 2011, Chris and Bobbie accompanied Chris’ family and a family friend to visit his aunt in Sydney, Australia. During the trip, Chris planned to propose to Bobbie. Seeing as it rained for eight days straight, he was running out of time to pop the question before the end of their ten-day trip. While on a rainy, soggy hike in the Blue Mountains the two came to a lookout point, only to experience three feet of visibility and a view of dense fog. Chris decided it was time to propose. He got down on one knee and said, “I have been waiting all week to do this,” and then he pulled out the ring! His family exclaimed from behind them, as they were surprised as well. It was a perfect moment they will remember forever.

Next came the wedding planning. Bobbie’s main focus was to create a warm, relaxing setting for their big day and Chris wanted to make sure it was fun and memorable. Incorporating family and friends, along with showing their personalities through details, made their day special. Kansas City was represented well by serving Jack Stack BBQ and Boulevard beer. A wide variety of soft, organic colors were used to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. The couple’s love of travel was reflected by naming the guest tables after the great cities of the world. A small St. Louis Cardinals cake was served to represent Chris’ love for his hometown team. DJ Elwood kept the night moving with fun, lively music. With help from many people and an exceptional wedding planner, their wedding day was everything they had hoped for and a memorable experience for family and friends.

Michael and I first crossed paths at a mutual friend’s house during the Winter of 2008. Although today we recall being immediately attracted to one another, our interaction that night was brief. After having his courage bolstered by a number of beers, Michael attempted to make an impression on me by acting foolish. While my laughs were “at” and not “with him” on that night, that brief encounter planted a seed that would blossom into something great. Luckily, we met again in the Summer of 2009. This time, we talked until the early morning hours. Michael walked me to my car, and we shared our first kiss. I remember driving away, with butterflies in my stomach. The moment that I was not in

Michael’s sight, I did the embarrassing all-alone-like-no-one-is watching dance moves in my car. I had never had this feeling before! Michael proposed on my birthday, May 6th, 2011. Michael had planned for us to meet up with friends that evening to celebrate “my birthday” on a party bus. Before we headed out for the evening, he said that it was time for my birthday present. He handed me a large box, and I proceeded to open it. It was a sewing machine. I was ecstatic! He had remembered

me telling him that as a little girl, I always asked for a sewing machine but had never received one. I thought that this was AMAZING! When I went to kiss and thank him, he reminded me that I had dropped the card. I opened the card and began to read. Michael had written a bunch of sweet love-nothings, with the last line saying, “Spend the rest of our lives together???” I looked up with tears rolling down my face, and Michael was on one knee, and asked, “Sarah, will you marry me?” I said, “YES”! I had never been the girl who thought about her wedding day. I never cared to attend weddings. In planning, Michael and I began by making a list of all the things needed to simply “pull it o!.” Before long, our list was out the door and we were touring venues and tasting cakes. Somewhere along the way, those not so important items become important. We have never been so grateful to have such supporting family members, friends, and incredible vendors. Without the hours of work they put in, we could not have enjoyed such a wonderful day. Trusting your instincts on who you choose to surround yourself with on your special day is priceless. On our wedding day, every person who said that they understood exactly what our vision was, said that they would do whatever they could to make the day just perfect, did just that. I was taken back to the butterflies from our first kiss, and I did the all-alone-like-no-one-is-watching dance moves. Only this time, I was able to do it with the love of my life.

Ryan and I were introduced by our mutual best friends in 2006. Initially, timing was never our thing. I moved to New York City and he stayed in KC. When I moved back from NYC in 2009 Ryan and I reunited. Sparks flew at a party and we’ve been together ever since. The night Ryan proposed to me was one the best nights of my life. Seeing that he was a former police o"cer and the ultimate prankster, he decided it would be a good idea to somehow intertwine the two with our engagement. Driving down Roe, unbeknownst to me, he arranged for a fellow police o"cer to pull us over. The police o"cer claimed we were speeding. Ryan began to talk back to the o"cer (please note- this is not recommended) and refused to accept the fact that he was speeding. The o"cer was furious that Ryan was talking back and had him step out of the car. Meanwhile, I was nervous because it was out of character for Ryan to be acting like this. Next thing I know, I see Ryan in handcu!s. The policeman asked me to step out of the car and gather Ryan’s belongings as he was going to take him down to the police station. I reached in Ryan’s coat pocket to get his wallet and ended up pulling out a little black box. I then realized that Ryan wasn’t actually handcu!ed, he was just holding the handcu!s behind his back. He then got on one knee and asked me to marry him. I was so shocked and surprised. Naturally, I said yes and jumped for joy. I was also delighted that he wasn’t actually going to jail. We then went to a surprise engagement party that he had planned for us with all of our family and friends.

The wedding planning period went by fast. I wasn’t big on details and planning so I hired a fabulous wedding planner. She walked me through every step. My job was just to pick out the few options that she recommended. She made the experience so much fun and low stress. The wedding day was magical.

Everything was perfect and exactly like I had envisioned it would be. My favorite colors - red, black and white - took over

the Midland Theatre. The vendors made everything seamless. The cake was out of this world and the flowers made the red décor of the Midland Theatre pop. The band was singing all my favorite tunes. They even played my favorite Lionel Richie song without skipping a beat. The night ended with a nacho bar filled with queso and sour cream. Our favorite! All of our family and friends were there to support us and help us celebrate. It was an unforgettable magical night.

Samantha and I met in the summer of 2008. Despite living fairly close to one another, and both working as restaurant servers, we shared no mutual friendships. What we did share in common was a frustration with our dating life to that point, leading us to take our respective searches online. Spurred by a string of bad relationships which never seemed to materialize as anything particularly meaningful, I took to OkCupid.com, swallowing my pride and ignoring

whatever stigmas were associated with online dating. I still remember the first time I saw her page. “Samiamram”. We were into similar music and movies, and had a similar dry, sarcastic humor. I messaged her something witty (I use that phrase loosely) about how important she must feel being a part of the “OkCupid Hotlist”, and instead of some curt dismissal, she came back with a similar jab at something on my profile. It was meant to be.

Except not right away. We went on our first date in July of 2008, but didn’t become serious until December of that year. I probably didn’t help my case by taking her to a movie as a first date (great conversation atmosphere, huh?) After that date, we hung out occasionally but I always suspected she wasn’t interested. In December 2008, Samantha called and invited me to come hang out. Jilted by her canceling plans the past couple times we tried to hang out, and emboldened by a couple drinks, I let Samantha know that I would come see her, but only if she was going to start being serious about us being together. To my surprise, the response was not the short beeps of an ended phone call, but rather: “Okay”. To this day, that conversation was the turning point

in our relationship. Something in my liquid-courage-fueled ultimatum clicked with Samantha, and since the cab ride to see her that night we have been inseparable. We had always shared a common interest in travel and Spanish culture (Samantha worked at the Spanish tapas restaurant La Bodega when we met). In May 2010, we traveled to Barcelona for vacation. I knew before the trip that I wanted to propose to Samantha, and this vacation provided the perfect opportunity. In Barcelona, we visited Parq Guell, a Gaudi-designed park overlooking Barcelona’s skyline, which is dominated by the massive La Sagrada Familia cathedral. I asked Samantha something about wanting to visit Barcelona again in the future, when the cathedral would be finished, and wanting it to be with her as my wife—I don’t really recall the specifics of the proposal because I was in an anxiety-induced catatonic state—and she said YES! We were married two years later at the Simpson House in Kansas City. Sticking with our love for Spanish culture, we served paella and other tapas to 120 of our closest friends and family. It was the most wonderful day of our lives, and I feel blessed every day to have found my Samiamram.

Charlie and I met at The University of Kansas on Saint Patrick’s Day in 2006. A mutual friend introduced us and instantly there was a connection! Through the remaining of our college days, we found time to spend together over meals; lunch in the Tri-Delta dining room, and dinner in the School of Engineering library. Some of our favorite memories come from the road trips we took together, talking for hours. As a couple, we were faced with one of life’s toughest challenges early in our relationship. However, our foundation of a strong friendship and with our incredible family and friends, we grew stronger together. We have also been blessed with so much love, laughter, fun, and surprises in our relationship! After six years of dating, and a lot of secretive planning on Charlie’s behalf, he asked me to marry him in front of 5,000 people! Wedding planning was a whirlwind of excitement and nerves, but the wedding day made it all worth it! On June 8, we tied the knot and danced the night away with our family and friends! We are enjoying life as newlyweds, living in Lenexa, KS with our three dogs, Cassie, Sophie, and Stella. Not a day goes by when one of us doesn’t comment on how much fun we had at our wedding. It was truly the happiest and most memorable day of our lives!

My husband & I met while attending college. Our love story is definitely unique; I can’t wow anyone with the cliché love at first site fairytale, but I love our story nonetheless! We lived in the same dorm our freshman year, he lived directly below me and my roommates and they loved to annoy us. Between dorm life and a few classes, we became instant friends. We were the classic “almost” couple several times on and o! through the first couple years of college, it was obvious there was something there but the timing never seemed right. The beginning of our junior year he wanted to take it to the next level, I turned him down. This cycle went on for quite a while, the typical “I’m not ready for anything serious, I don’t want to ruin our friendship” kind of thing. His persistence was impressive to say the least, so I finally gave into a date. One date and it was over, I knew I could never find a more kind-hearted, genuine man. Persistence does indeed pay o! and I’m so thankful that he never gave up on me! Shortly after graduation, we moved in together. One evening we were headed to a family friend’s farm, there was a trailer he was thinking about

buying (or so he said). This also happened to be a farm that I’ve always thought would be an amazing setting for a wedding. After we arrived, Jamison started talking about our future wedding. He asked “Well, what do you think? Could you say ‘I Do’ out here?” I turned around and he was down on one knee and said, “If so, let’s start with a ‘Yes’ first” and asked me to marry him! We had a nine-month engagement. The planning process can be stressful and a lot of work, especially when you’re doing a lot of it yourself but the satisfaction is worth it! Enjoy this time with your fiancé; it’s a lot of fun. The best advice I have for bride-to-be’s: Your fiancé will give his opinion on things the truly cares about, he does NOT care what color napkins you order!

We had a gorgeous, country/rustic, DIY kind of wedding. My husband is a contractor by trade and built the entire set-up for the ceremony himself, out by a beautiful pond. Our reception was the combination of a tent and old barn, which turned out awesome. The most important thing to remember is: Don’t let yourself get caught up in the logistics and planning on the big day. Something is bound to

go slightly wrong or you’ll run into some unforeseen circumstance, who cares! The day only happens once and the most important thing is that you’re marrying your best friend. The details you’ve worked so hard to make perfect no longer matter, they’ll sort themselves out. It’s over in a flash, so enjoy every second of it. OH! And hiring a videographer is the BEST money you could spend!

My wife, Alyssa, and I first met each other at church when we were in eighth grade. Though I’ve always been known to be a hopeless romantic, “love at first sight” did not apply to us, since I wore weird Hawaiian shirts and she had funny hair. Little did we know, we would eventually become enamored with each other. Eventually. We’ve been friends for around nine years, first as friends of friends, but then we developed our own friendship by going on a bunch of missions trips together. We dated various people and still remained friends. However, when my girlfriend and I broke up, things changed. It became obvious to me that Alyssa was incredible. From her ridiculous jokes to her captivating singing, she had me. This wasn’t necessarily a good thing though, because she was in a serious relationship with another guy. But did that stop me? No way! A couple months afterwards, they broke up. I was pretty psyched about it and I continued to pursue her, but to no avail. She just didn’t get it. I dropped hints left and right, but she never thought I was interested. But in August of 2009, she was about to head to Kansas State University for college, and I was bold enough to tell her how I felt about her. She then friend-zoned me and said, “I see you like a brother.” But no way I was going to give up that easily! After a year of frustration and perseverance, I finally got her to give me a chance. We dated for two years and lived three hours apart, and while it helped us develop a relationship that wasn’t just based on hugs

and kisses, it was still di"cult. After these two years, I decided something had to change. So I decided to ask her to marry me. I had known even before we started dating that she was the one for me, so it seemed right at this point. I proposed to her at the place where I first told her how I felt about her. I made a word search puzzle for her to complete, in which she would circle words that were things I loved about

her or our relationship. I then made a hangman game on the sidewalk, in which the answer was “Will you marry me,” and she got it on the first try. We thought we would cry at this point, but on a 107-degree day, all of our water was being used to sweat. On June 2, 2013, we had

the wedding we had always dreamed of with the people we had always wanted, and to the person we had always hoped for. Her father was the one who married us, which made the day even more special. She had always seemed like an unattainable dream, and it still feels like a dream now that she’s my wife. I’m fine with living a dream for my whole life.
