The best place to start making the world a more eco-friendly place is right at home.

At Crate and Barrel, we believe that the best place we can all begin to conserve and protect our natural resources is at home. At our company “home” in Northbrook, Illinois, we have prioritized developing new products and manufacturing processes to expand the responsible choices we offer our customers. While our collection has featured renewable woods and sustainable materials for a number of years, we are continuing to explore and introduce important initiatives that will help make our homes more thoughtful environments.

More eco-friendly upholstery, without more expense. The majority of our upholstered frames are benchmade by hand and certified sustainable by nonprofit organizations that oversee the conservation and responsible social and economic management of more than 150 million acres of the world’s forests. We have also taken the important step of minimizing petroleum-based foam in most of our upholstery cushions by using more energy-efficient alternatives, such as soy- and corn-based foam and fibres, without sacrificing an ounce of the quality or comfort that our furnishings are known for. Most upholstered frames also feature suspension systems partially made of recycled steel. Our Steelcase≈ QiViΩ office chair featuring 27% recycled content and Haworth≈ VeryΩ Task office chair, which has 65% recycled materials, are both thoughtfully manufactured in a process featuring low-emission, low-waste packaging and efficient shipping methods. And while green improvements are typically associated with higher costs, we are bringing these upgrades to our customers without added expense.

We are dedicated to developing products certified by the FSC. You’ll be pleased to know that the wood used in a selection of our dining, accent table and bedroom collections is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)—the “gold standard” designation for wood harvested from forests that are responsibly managed, socially beneficial, environmentally appropriate and economically viable. This season, FSC-certified furnishings include our solid teak Linea bedroom collection and Margate armoire, and teak Cayman dining tables and sideboard.

Crate and Barrel is the first North American home retailer to work directly with TFT. Since 2005, we have worked closely with TFT to ensure that certain hardwoods selected for the production of our furniture are from plantations and forests that are responsibly and socially managed for their long-term conservation.

Natural beauty and craftsmanship in a range of exclusive designs. The Colfax bedroom collection is constructed of solid bamboo—one of the world’s most renewable and sustainable plants. Our popular Basque dining collection derives its beauty from mango wood, at one time considered a discarded crop after a short fruit-bearing life and now appreciated for its character of grain and warm amber glow. In addition to Basque, we are pleased to offer the natural beauty of mango wood throughout our collection, including Cabria dining and Dawson bedroom. We are also excited by our innovative designs featuring reclaimed and repurposed woods—from as far and wide as buildings no longer in use in China to telephone poles from rural Brazil—which add character and a global sense of history to our Paloma, Taverna and Terravida dining, Atwood bedroom, Hendrix and Phoenix home office, and Seguro media and accent table collections.

At Crate and Barrel, green is not a trend. It’s an ongoing mission. Our commitment will continue as we develop new ways to improve everything we touch, from the products we design to the way we deliver them to your home. Merchandise parcels arriving at your home are carefully packaged with GreenWrap, a 100% recyclable, reusable material, or with air pads that deflate to recycle. At our warehouses and stores, we have recycling programs for all appropriate materials, including corrugated cardboard and plastic. We are actively working to reduce the amount of materials we use to ship our furniture, with the targeted goal of eliminating all polystyrene foam in the near future. Our famous black and white bags are made from 100% post-consumer recycled paper certified by the FSC. Engineered from renewable fibre, our boxes also contain post-consumer recycled materials. Both are 100% recyclable and printed with environmentally friendly, water-based inks. This guide and every catalog we publish are printed on paper certified by the FSC as being from responsibly managed forests. We proudly manage our West Coast operations at a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold-certified distribution centre in Tracy, California. UpholsteryOur upholstered Furniture Collection pieces are designed with quality frames, premium cushioning and fabrics, and beautiful leathers.

There are three options for ordering upholstered Furniture Collection items:

Stock We stock several frames from each collection, often in multiple fabrics or leathers. Stock offers the best value and immediate delivery.

Stock Plus Additional preselected fabrics or leathers plus more frame sizes for each collection are offered at the same great value as Stock. Please allow for extra production time.

Custom Choose from hundreds of fabrics and leathers in our upholstery room to create a one-of-a-kind upholstery item. Custom items are made to order and may require extra production time and cost.

FabricsWe offer more fabric choices than you can imagine and insist that each one surpass industry rub tests designed to exaggerate daily wear. We will be glad to provide fabric swatches to help you make your decision. If you need more help visualizing, go to crateandbarrel.com, where you can “click-upholster” items in the Stock and Stock Plus colours available.

Care InstructionsRotate cushions and pillows weekly to distribute wear. Vacuum upholstery weekly using the upholstery attachment and crevice tool of your vacuum to remove loose particles. Periodic cleaning by a professional upholstery cleaning service is the only recommended cleaning method for your upholstery, including furniture base beneath slipcovers. Annual cleaning is suggested, but this may vary depending on use. To prevent possible “bleeding” of ink onto fabric, do not leave newspapers or other printed materials lying on upholstery. Take special care when spraying household chemicals and commercial products near upholstery. Avoid placing your furniture in direct sunlight. All fabric and leather will fade over time. Applying noncommercial scented fabric fresheners, neutralizers and fabric protectors is never recommended.

Spills and Spot Cleaning—In some cases, spot cleaning can cause a ring or fading. It is best to have the entire piece or cushion casing cleaned by a professional upholstery cleaning service to ensure uniform results. If you decide to spot clean on your own, check the standard cleaning code (below) to determine the correct type of product to use. Always blot—never rub—spills immediately with a clean, absorbent white cloth. Blot from the outside to the middle of the affected area to prevent rings. Pile fabrics may require brushing with a non-metallic, stiff bristle brush to restore appearance. Follow the cleaning code below. Always pretest cleaning agents in a small, unnoticeable area. Never use strong chemicals or detergents.

Standard Cleaning Codes—Industry standard cleaning codes indicate the correct cleaning method based on the type of fabric. To determine the cleaning code for your upholstery, please ask your store associate or refer to your sales receipt.

O: Wash in cold water using biodegradable detergent or eco-friendly soap; air dry. Organic dry cleaning is also recommended. For spot cleaning, test a small inconspicuous area first with a biodegradable or eco-friendly cleaner.

W: Water-based cleaning agents or foam may be used. Use only distilled water; tap water may cause rings or fading.

S: Only mild, water-free cleaning solvents should be used. Never use water. Do not dry clean.

SW: Water-based cleaning agents, foam or mild water-free cleaning solvents may be used. Use only distilled water; tap water may cause rings or fading.

X: Clean only by vacuuming or light brushing to remove overall soil. Never use water, foam or liquid cleaning agents.

Note: For prewashed fabrics upholstered onto the frame, follow the S cleaning code.

SlipcoversBrush or vacuum slipcovers regularly (at least once a month). Protect from direct sunlight, which may cause fabric to fade unevenly. Immediately blot spills with a clean white cloth. Seat and back cushions should be reversed and/or rotated regularly.

Dry Clean-Only Slipcovers—Hire a reputable dry cleaner or professional upholstery cleaner. Always dry clean the entire slipcover for uniform results. Close all zippers and fabric tab fasteners prior to cleaning. As with clothing, some fading is to be expected.

Machine-Washable Slipcovers—Use a triple-load washer or divide slipcovers into manageable washloads. Always wash the entire slipcover for uniform results. Close all zippers and fabric tab fasteners prior to washing. As with clothing, some fading is to be expected. Use cold water and mild detergent. Tumble dry on low until slightly damp; remove promptly to reduce wrinkling. Do not line-dry slipcovers as this may stretch the fabric.

Fabric ProtectionWhen you purchase our fabric protection for your upholstered furniture, we will apply a stain- and soil-repellent product to the entire piece prior to delivery or pickup of your furniture. See your sales associate for pricing.

Advantages of Fabric Protection—Coats the fibres of your upholstery fabric, reducing penetration of soil and stains. Gives you extra time to effectively respond to accidents. Acts as a stain-release agent, allowing soil and stains to more easily lift off the surface when professionally cleaned. Lasts through approximately three complete cleanings by a professional upholstery cleaning service. Extends the life of the fabric to keep it looking new.

Note: Fabric protection is not a force field against stains. Application of this product will not prevent upholstery from getting soiled or stained, nor does it eliminate the need for routine cleaning and proper fabric care. Fabric protection is not recommended for slipcovers that you intend to wash.

LeatherIf you’re investing in the beauty of leather, you’ll appreciate knowing that at Crate and Barrel we select top-grain hides—the softest, most supple, highest quality there is. Our collection features fine finishing details that may include topstitching, welted edges and mitred corners. Colours range from rich cherry to classic ebony, as well as seasonal new colours. Leather finishes vary depending on style, from the French flea market antiqued look to highly polished and sleek.

Bicast Leather—Leather that is top-coated with a protective layer of polyurethane. This makes it more durable and gives a sheen to the finish.

Bonded Leather—Leather that is made using the shavings and scraps from either full-grain chrome or a combination of vegetable- and chrome-tanned leathers. It is strong, long-lasting, and offers a smooth grained surface.

Full-Aniline Leather—Leather that has been dyed all the way through the top and back surfaces, allowing all the natural characteristics of the hide to be highlighted.

Natural Markings—Often it takes several hides of leather to complete one piece of furniture. Because hides vary in colour and texture, each one will have its own unique characteristics. Natural markings such as wrinkles and scars are not imperfections, but rather an assurance that you have received an authentic leather product.

Semi-Aniline Leather—Top-grain leather that is aniline-dyed with additional pigment and/or other topical finishes for a more even colouration.

Resources

Top-Grain Leather/Hide—The outermost layer of the leather hide, which produces the highest-quality leather.

Vegetable-Tanned Leather—Top-grain, semi-aniline leather that uses vegetable tannins found in roots, tree bark and other plant matter. Eliminates the use of heavy metals to convert rawhide into leather.

Care InstructionsDust regularly with a dry cloth and vacuum as needed. Leather furniture should be protected from exposure to sunlight and heat, which may cause the leather to fade or lose its soft, supple feel.

Spots, Spills and Stains—Most liquids will initially be repelled by the leather but if left standing over an extended period of time, will be absorbed. Blot liquid immediately with a clean, absorbent cloth or sponge. If necessary, use clear lukewarm distilled water and gently wipe the spill. Wipe with a clean towel and air dry. If water is used, clean the entire area where the spill occurred (i.e., the entire arm or cushion). Stubborn stains can be washed with a mild solution of nonperfumed, undyed soap and clear, lukewarm distilled water; then rinse, wipe well and air dry. Do not dry area using a hair dryer. Butter, oil or grease spills should be wiped with a clean, dry cloth. Spot should dissipate into the leather in a short period of time. Do not use saddle soaps, oils, abrasive cleaners, perfumed or dyed soaps, furniture polish, varnish, detergents, ammonia or harsh commercial cleaners, as they can damage and streak the leather. If you have any questions concerning your leather upholstery, please call your store associate or a professional upholstery cleaner.

ConstructionOur upholstered Furniture Collection pieces are benchmade with kiln-dried hardwood frames and upholstered start to finish by craftsmen, not an assembly line. Most of our upholstery pieces feature eco-friendly components, such as certified sustainable hardwood frames and soy- or plant-based foam cushioning.

FramesEvery hardwood frame in our upholstered Furniture Collection has a lifetime guarantee. Our frames are made using only kiln-dried hardwoods to reduce movement, twisting and warping. Key joints are reinforced with traditional double-dowel joinery and/or corner blocks to withstand weight and stress.

Certified Sustainable Frames—The majority of our frames are crafted from woods that can be traced to sustainable origins and are certified by either the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) or the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI).

Corner Block—A wood block that is secured into the frame corners for extra stability at the joinery.

Cross Brace—A wooden brace placed between each seat section for rigidity and straightness, front and back.

Double-Dowel Joinery—The frame sections are designed to interlock at the corners for stability and durability. This joinery is then reinforced with wood glue and corner blocks.

Engineered Hardwood—Veneered solid wood panels, which are incredibly strong and resist cracking, splitting or warping.

Kiln-Dried Hardwood—Hardwood such as ash, maple or poplar is kiln-dried to remove moisture, ensuring that the frame will not crack, split or warp. All of our frames are either CARB Exempt or CARB compliant.

Suspension SystemsDepending on style and function, we offer different suspension systems, including traditional eight-way hand-tied springs or heavy-gauge steel sinuous wire springs. Which is all very technical talk really about sinking in and relaxing.

Eight-Way Hand-Tied Springs—A traditional, high-quality handcrafted spring system in which each spring is hand-tied eight times around the coil to each adjacent spring, forming a flexible, floating suspension.

Flexolator Spring Suspension—A vinyl-coated wire grid with helical, spiral coil springs is placed into the frame and attached using metal clips. The clips are also vinyl-coated to prevent metal squeaks.

Inner-Spring Coil System—Individually wrapped steel coils are nestled within a polyurethane core to prolong the life of the cushion and enhance the overall comfort.

Sinuous Wire Spring Suspension—Rows of S-shaped, zigzag springs are attached to arch across the frame at regular intervals for support and comfort. We use a double row of springs at the corners for extra slouching support.

Synthetic Webbing—Sturdy, synthetic straps are tightly interwoven in a grid for even support. Webbing is most often used on dining and office chairs.

Cushions and PaddingWe add extra layers of premium padding to prolong the life of the fabric and to enhance the subtle curve of a chair back. Whenever feasible, we use soy- and/or plant-based foam to reduce dependency on petroleum products. We generously plump seat cushions with a variety of fills including soft down blend, and recycled and post-consumer fibres.

Downproof Ticking—A tightly woven, cotton-muslin fabric used to encase fibre, soft down blend and all-down cushions. Its tight weave traps the air for a more “cushy” experience and prevents feather ends from pushing through the casing.

Eco-Friendly Cushions—All of our eco-friendly seat cushions begin with a soy- and/or plant-based polyfoam core. Depending on style, many are then wrapped in either a blend of feather-down and corn-based fibres, a blend of feather-down and synthetic fibres, or regenerated, recycled or post-consumer fibres. Most seat and back cushions are luxuriously wrapped in synthetic or downproof ticking.

Down Blend—Fibre- and feather-down blend encased in downproof ticking.

Fibre—Spun synthetic fibre encased in a ticking.

Fibre-Foam—Polyurethane foam core wrapped in spun synthetic fibre or recycled post-consumer fibres.

Polyfibre—Polyurethane foam core wrapped in spun synthetic fibre and encased in ticking.

Polyfoam—Polyurethane foam core encased in ticking.

Synthetic Ticking—A manmade, nonwoven synthetic fabric used to encase fibre cushions. Due to its more porous nature, it is not used to enclose down fill.

Tight Back/Seat—Upholstered seats or backs without separate loose cushions.

Wood At Crate and Barrel, we respect the origins, character and grace of the natural woods we choose in designing quality furnishings to enhance your home. Our craftsmen bring a skill and dedication to the fine art of woodworking that you will continue to appreciate over time.

We use timbre harvested from responsibly managed forests, and we are committed to working closely with the FSC and TFT (pg 227). Our sources are established, reliable and share our commitment to, and respect for, the replenishment and ecological practices essential to sustaining our natural forests. We believe furniture can be even more beautiful because it is made with bamboo, one of the world’s most replenishable plants. And we are in awe of the natural character and grain of mango, which historically would not have been harvested after its short fruit-bearing life.

We responsibly showcase some of the more rare and beautiful woods in our collection by incorporating wood veneers. These veneers not only allow us to feature unusual woods and grain patterns, they also afford our customers the opportunity to own designs whose costs would be prohibitive if created from solid woods.

Solid WoodsOur craftsmen carefully choose woods for the durability and beauty they will bring to our designs. The traditional woods we use are timbres hewn directly from cut or recycled trees. The terms below include many of the durable hardwoods and design features you will find in our collection.

Veneers Veneers provide a thoughtful economy of natural resources and an appreciable economy of costs, not to mention new opportunities for creative design. Many of our collections achieve their substantial look at such an extraordinary value by incorporating both beautifully grained solid wood and veneers. State-of-the-art technology and modern materials have also brought unprecedented strength and new aesthetic expression to veneers.

Veneer—An overlay of hardwood often used to finish or decorate a piece of furniture. Veneers are usually applied to engineered wood or substrate materials. They may also be used over solid wood construction for a special design effect, such as marquetry.

Burl—A visual effect resulting when wood is cut from an overgrown knot or outgrowth. Often used in decorative veneers, it is also known as a curl or swirl.

Engineered Wood—Any composite wood product, such as medium-density fibreboard (MDF), plywood or particleboard. These woods are incredibly strong, resisting the warping and twisting that can occur with natural solid woods. Engineered woods are usually finished with paint, or a wood or laminate veneer.

Laminate—A product made by bonding layers of wood or other material to a substrate.

Low-Emission Engineered Wood/Veneer—MDF and veneers that are produced using the strictest low-emission standards established by the California Air Resource Board (CARB) as well as the European Union.

Marquetry—An Old-World decorative craft in which patterns are formed by the insertion of pieces of material into wood veneer. One example of this would be a starburst on a tabletop.

MDF—Medium-density fibreboard is an extremely durable, warp- and twist- resistant panel product, widely used as a substitute for plywood, particleboard and solid lumber. It is manufactured by compressing wood fibres, resin and wax under high pressure to form a panel.

Particleboard—A structural material made of wood fragments such as chips

or shavings that are mechanically pressed into sheet form and bonded together with resin.

Plywood—A structural material made of layers of wood glued together, usually with the grains of adjoining layers at right angles to each other.

Solid Wood Banding—A solid wood band is placed around the top edge of a veneered table or desk to help prevent task-generated nicks and dings. It is concealed with a smooth finish and stain to match the overall veneer.

Substrate—Any engineered wood product, such as MDF, plywood or particle-board, to which a veneer or laminate is then adhered.

Wood Finishes After final construction of our wood furnishings, we carefully choose the appropriate finish. The finish not only brings out the natural grain and character of the wood, it also preserves and protects the wood from daily spills, moisture, heat and light.

Acrylic—A varnish based on acrylic resins (chemically made) and solvents. Prevents alterations of transparency as well as colour variations over time. An extremely hard and durable finish, it protects against humidity changes.

Bleaching—A method of lightening the overall colour of the wood.

Distressing—Using various tools to create the scratches, dents and wear characteristic of aged wood.

Lacquer—A clear, hard, durable finish that is heat-resistant and comparable to varnish in strength. Pigments may be added to lacquer to enhance the wood’s appearance.

Oil—A clear finish that protects the wood and brings out the natural beauty of the colour and grain.

Polyurethane—A clear synthetic coating brushed or sprayed on to seal and protect the look of natural wood or to serve as a protective topcoat for more delicate finishes.

Stain—A natural or synthetic chemical used to colour and highlight wood grain. Stains can be water-, oil- or spirit-based.

Wash—A light, diluted coat of paint that is handpainted or rubbed onto the wood before sealing.

Water-Based Coating—An eco-friendly clear topcoat that protects the look of natural wood. A low-emission product, it contains significantly less solvent than conventional finishes.

Wax—A “renewable” finish added to wood to protect and enhance its natural appearance. Wax may be used on bare or stained wood.

Wenge—A modern colour reference to a dark chocolate wood stain that gives the impression of the naturally dark brown wenge wood. It appears primarily as a dramatic accent in modern, minimal furnishings, and is most often used in exposed upholstery frames, tables and casegoods.

JoineryBecause wood is a living, natural material, joinery allows for its seasonal expansion and contraction with changes in climate and humidity. While joinery’s first line of responsibility is that of connecting two boards, it is a centuries-old craft that adds value and beauty to even our most contemporary wood furnishings.

Butt—A basic joint formed by butting one piece of wood up to another and then reinforcing them with dowels or cornerblocks.

Classic Chinese Joinery—Traditional solid wood furniture construction methods that do not involve the use of nails or screws. These centuries-old techniques include tongue-and-groove and mortise-and-tenon joints.

Dado—A joint formed by inserting the end of one board into the cut side of another. This joinery is used in casegoods to secure fixed shelves, to install cabinet dividers, and to attach cabinet backboards and the bottoms of drawers.

Dovetail—A strong, decorative joint formed by interlocking wedges securing two planes of wood that meet at a right angle. This joinery may be beautifully exposed on drawer front corners, where it withstands constant pushing and pulling motions. We occasionally may use dovetailing at the top edges of a dresser or cabinet for its intriguing visual appeal.

Finger—A joint formed by notching small fingers into corresponding pieces of wood and interlocking them. This is most often used as a decorative or durable joint on chairs.

Lap—A joint formed by cutting the end of one board to interlock and lie flush on the lap of another cut board. While commonly used in frame construction, the lap joint is also used to create intricate wood lattices and interesting “X” configurations that are flush to the touch.

Mitre—A precise, 45-degree-angle joint used to conceal end grain. While you may be most familiar with mitres in frames and tabletops, we may use a mitre to create the visual effect of a flush open-grid pattern for a tabletop, chair back or headboard.

Mortise and Tenon—A skillfully executed joint in which typically no nails or screws are used. The protruding sawn edge of the tenon board is inserted into the matching routed opening of the mortise board. This functional joint is most often used to connect table and chair legs to crosspieces. Some designs intentionally expose the beauty of this precise joinery.

Peg—A traditional woodworking method of joining two pieces of wood together with a square or round peg hammered into a hole.

Tongue and Groove—A time-intensive, precisely fitted full-length joint in which typically no nails or screws are used. An extended tongue is shaped along the edge of one wood board, then inserted into an exact-fit groove routed along the edge of an adjacent board. This technique is often used in the construction of multiboard, planed tabletops and certain casegoods.

Wood Care InstructionsThe care of wood furniture varies according to the wood type and finish and the function of the piece. Please consult your sales associate for more specific care guidelines, as some collections have supplemental care instructions for long-term maintenance. Wood is a natural material susceptible to climate and the elements. Avoid placing your furniture in highly humid or dry areas, such as directly next to air vents. Direct sunlight may slightly darken or lighten wood furniture.

Note: Based on frequency of use and storage, dining table leaves may change tone at a different rate than the table itself.

Dust with a dry, soft cloth. Remove any soil buildup with a damp cloth and dry immediately. Wipe spills immediately with a soft, dry cloth. If water is left standing, white spots can occur but should dissipate over time. Paste wax and 0000 steel wool can be used on a wax finish to remove surface scratches. Rub lightly over the entire surface then buff with a soft cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasives on any finish. Always use coasters or trivets to prevent heat and water from having direct contact with wood surfaces. Use felt pads on any displays or hard objects that are placed directly on the wood. Avoid contact with certain materials, such as rubber, which might react with the finish. Wax or oil finishes may be renewed by rubbing a light application of a penetrating oil with fine steel wool and wiping with a clean soft cloth to remove any excess oil.

MetalsOur collection includes exclusive designs executed in quality metalwork, from classic to contemporary.

ConstructionWe design most of our metal furnishings and accents with low-carbon steel that is hand-forged, welded or cast. When appropriate, we may occasionally use handwrought iron.

Aluminum—A durable yet lightweight metal that is very malleable and easily shaped. It is naturally resistant to oxidation and will not rust.

Casting—Forming metal into shapes by melting and moulding.

Cold-Rolled Steel—Steel that is processed while cold, giving it an oxidized, weathered look. This type of steel is treated with a protective finish to prevent rust.

Copper—A reddish-brown metal that is easily shaped, manipulated and hammered. Copper can be maintained with cleaning products or can be left to naturally oxidize to a vibrant green colour.

Extruded Steel—Round, rectangular, or L- or T-shaped lengths created by mechanically extruding, or squeezing, hot metal through a die.

Galvanized Iron—Iron that is treated with zinc to prevent corrosion.

Galvanized Steel—Steel that is treated with zinc to prevent corrosion. This type of steel is particularly suited for use in outdoor furniture.

Hand-Forging—Shaping metal by hand using heat and hammering techniques.

Hot-Rolled Steel—Steel that is processed while hot, making it easy to create different thicknesses. Although this type of steel is less susceptible to rust, it is usually treated with a protective finish to prevent rust.

Millscale Steel—Steel that has a protective coating of metallic dust, a by-product of the steel rolling process. This type of coating protects against rust.

Stainless Steel—An iron-based alloy with a minimum of 10% chromium content. Stainless steel will not stain, corrode or rust. It often has a brushed or polished finish.

Tubular Steel—Steel in a circular or rectangular tube form.

Welding—Joining pieces of metal together by hand using heat and molten materials.

Wrought Iron—A pure form of iron that is tough yet easily “wrought,” or “worked,” by hand into a welded design.

Metal FinishesThe finishes we apply to our metal furnishings do double duty. They enhance the look of the design and protect the metal from unwanted oxidation.

Chrome-Plated Finish—A thin layer of chrome that is applied by electroplating onto a steel surface. The result is a brighter, mirrorlike finish.

Oil—Basic finish that retards rust and adds depth and colour to the metal; must be reapplied.

Oxidation—A rusted finish achieved either through the use of chemicals or exposure to the elements; finish is typically sealed when the desired colour is achieved to prevent further change.

Patina—The sheen on any surface produced by age and use.

Polyurethane—A clear synthetic coating brushed or sprayed on to seal and protect the look of natural metal or to serve as a protective topcoat for more delicate finishes.

Powdercoat—Extremely durable electrostatic finish achieved by coating metal furniture with electrically charged paint powder that is then baked and fused to the metal surface. The result is smooth, even and durable.

Care InstructionsDust regularly with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the finish. Iron or steel frames will rust if the finish is scratched or if your furniture is exposed to excessive humidity, particularly in saltwater locations.

Natural FibreSeveral of our exclusive designs feature handwoven natural fibre construction or accents that add texture and character to the room.

Lampakanai—A coarse self-renewing grass with distinctive triangular stems, known for its strength and use in roping. Natural lampakanai colouration varies from light to dark brown.

Rattan—A vinelike plant with distinctive solid stems, known for being lightweight, durable and flexible. Strands of rattan skin are peeled off the stem and used for weaving around furniture frames. The remaining core is a sturdy material also used in furniture-making.

Care InstructionsDust regularly with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaners, or silicone- or alcohol-based agents on any woven material. Clean spills with a damp cloth. Remove small particles or surface debris with a soft brush. Fibre furniture is intended for use indoors only and should be protected from exposure to sunlight.

Synthetic MaterialsResin Wicker—Colourfast, UV-resistant resin designed to look like real wicker, but able to stand up to any weather. Resin wicker is usually hand-wrapped around a powdercoated steel frame.

Care Instructions Resin Wicker—Clean resin wicker with mild soap and water. Do not use abrasive powders or chlorine bleach. Store indoors out of season.

Recycled MaterialsOur collection includes exclusive designs that feature recycled materials.

Gerflor≈—A man-made material that is resistant to heat, liquid and abrasion. It is extremely durable and easy to clean.

Care InstructionsGerflor≈—Dust with a soft, dry cloth. For indoor use only. For soil buildup, wipe with a damp cloth and dry.

Other MaterialsBanswara Marble—A form of white limestone with grey veining.

Bluestone—A form of limestone sourced from China. Colour ranges from grey to slate blue.

Carrara Marble—Sourced from the Carrara region of Italy, this marble is known for its light grey veining and historic use in sculptures and buildings.

Concrete—A mixture of cement, stone powder, granite and marble powder combined with natural fibres. Hand-finished with non-toxic, clear stone wax.

RugsRugs connect us to our space. They complete not only the room, but the way you feel in it. From rich, plush handloomed New Zealand wools, to natural handwoven fibres, to durable smart new synthetics, the highest quality materials and construction methods are used throughout the Crate and Barrel rug collection. The result is a sophisticated and livable group of rugs featuring more than 40 exclusive designs.

Wool There’s nothing like the softness, warmth and colour a handwoven or hand-tufted wool rug can bring to a room. Our collection features modern neutrals, traditional designs, artistic graphics and sculpted dimensionals in plush 100% wool. The upkeep is modern and minimal, too. Wool is naturally stain-resistant thanks to natural oils that prevent dirt from adhering to the yarn. And because wool’s a durable fibre that springs back, it’s a practical choice for high-traffic areas.

ConstructionHand-knotted—In a technique that has been handed down from generation to generation, yarn is wrapped and then knotted around each warp thread. Each yarn is then hand-cut and hand-tamped to form a tightly constructed pile. This time and attention to detail by expert craftsmen results in a beautiful rug with a lasting value and presence.

Handloomed—A variety of looks and textures from luxurious shag rugs to versatile cotton rag rugs are achieved with the use of a loom. A combination of colours and yarn thicknesses is intricately handwoven to create contemporary or traditional designs. Each step of construction is hand-finished by skilled artisans.

Hand-tufted—With the aid of a tufting tool, yarn is passed through a frame-stretched fabric backing on which a pattern has been drawn. Both cut or looped piles are achieved through this process. Tufted rugs are backed with latex for stability, then with fabric for a finished look. Skilled tradesmen complete each stage of the process.

Machine-loomed—An efficient machine-made way to loom a variety of textures at a value. Power-loomed rugs are usually synthetic or fibre and can include cut piles, rib patterns and bouclé weaves.

Care InstructionsVacuum regularly. For the first two to three months, additional vacuuming without the beater bar turned on (or with the highest pile setting) may be necessary to manage the normal shedding that occurs. Blot spills immediately with a clean, absorbent white cloth. Rugs should not be saturated with cleaning solvents or scrubbed excessively. We suggest using products designed specifically for wool or dry extraction powders such as Host.≈ For best results, periodic professional cleaning is recommended. Shag rugs will continue to shed for their entire life. Loose tufts should be cut, not pulled. Rotate the rug periodically to help reduce uneven wear. Avoid placing rugs in direct sunlight to prevent fading over time. A rug pad is recommended for all rugs. If the intended use is over carpeting, our Multi-Surface Rug Pad is recommended.

Natural Fibre Our natural fibre rugs bring a modern organic look and neutral texture to any setting. They’re a natural choice for adding a casual look to classic living and family rooms, or a relaxed kickback feel to the weekend cottage. Our collection is woven in interesting patterns by craftsmen whose skills have been handed down for generations.

Construction Our fibre rugs are handwoven or loomed from a variety of all-natural plants and grasses such as jute and sisal. Many of our natural fibre rugs are backed with latex for cushioning and stability, and to extend the life of the rug.

Care InstructionsVacuum regularly. Blot spills immediately with a clean, absorbent white cloth. Spot clean with a dry extraction powder such as Host.≈ For best results, professional dry extraction cleaning is recommended. Natural fibres are quite absorbent and can shrink and expand with changes in humidity. They are intended for indoor use only and are not recommended for use in damp or humid areas such as bathrooms. Keep out of direct sunlight to help prevent fading. Rotate the rug periodically to help reduce uneven wear. Latex rug backing may interact with uncured hardwood floor finishes. Use rug pad when placing rug over finished hardwood floors or carpeting. Our Multi-Surface Rug Pad is recommended.

CottonEasy-care cotton rugs offer a quick, inexpensive way to change the look of any room. In an entryway, by a kitchen sink, on a bathroom floor, in the den. They’re so much fun, we introduce new patterns and colours with every season.

ConstructionOur soft cotton rugs are handwoven on traditional looms in a variety of flatweave styles, from stripes to patterns.

Care InstructionsMost smaller-sized cotton rugs are machine-washable. Larger sizes can be washed in industrial-sized washers or dry-cleaned. Avoid placing cotton rugs in direct sunlight to prevent fading over time. A rug pad is recommended for all cotton rugs. If the intended use is over carpeting, our Multi-Surface Rug Pad is recommended.

SyntheticOur machine-woven, synthetic fibre rugs offer value in a new generation of man-made materials that often mimic the look of both natural fibre and wool rugs, while resisting stains, and wear and tear. While synthetics are extremely durable, colourfast and perfect for high-traffic areas, they’re also priced so you can frequently update rooms with new seasonal colour and texture. We also feature a collection of indoor/outdoor polypropylene rugs. Machine-loomed for a tight weave, these synthetics add a sophisticated, interior look to exterior settings—yet are extremely durable and need only to be hosed down. They also make smart choices for the kitchen, mudroom, basement or laundry room.

ConstructionSynthetic floor coverings are constructed from olefin, polyester, acrylic, nylon or a blend of these fibres.

Indoor RugsVacuum regularly. Blot spills immediately with a clean, absorbent white cloth. Spot clean or shampoo with a mild detergent. For best results, periodic professional cleaning is recommended. A rug pad is recommended for all indoor rugs. If the intended use is over carpeting, our Multi-Surface Rug Pad is recommended.

Indoor-Outdoor RugsWash with a mild detergent and rinse with a garden hose.

Rug PadsBecause rugs wear primarily from the back first, we recommend the use of a pad to lengthen the life of your rug, as well as provide stability and cushioning. We offer two protective options, depending on the construction and use of the rug.
