Unleaded gasoline with a Pump Octane Ratingof 87 (Research Octane Number 91) or highermust be used in Hyundai vehicle. If leadedgasoline is used, it will cause the catalyticconverter to become ineffective and the emis-sion control system to malfunction. This can also result in increased maintenanceexpense. To avoid accidental use of leadedfuel, the large nozzle used with leaded gasolineat service stations can not be inserted into fueltank opening of Hyundai vehicle.

B010E01A-AAT

Gasolines for Cleaner AirTo help contribute to cleaner air, Hyundai rec-ommends that you use gasolines treated withdetergent additives, which help prevent depositformation in the engine. These gasolines willhelp the engine run cleaner and the EmissionControl System performance.

SEAT BELT PRECAUTIONSAll occupants of the vehicle should wear theirseat belts at all times. Indeed, your province'slaws may require that some or all occupants ofthe vehicle use seat belts. The possibility of injury or the severity of injuryin an accident will be decreased if this elemen-tary safety precaution is observed. In addltlon, the following recommendations are made:.

B150B01A GAT

Infant or Small ChildSome countries require the use of child re-straint systems for infants and small chlldren.Whether this is required by law or not, it isstrongly recommended that a child restraintseat or infant restraint system be used forinfants or small children weighing less than 18kilograms (40 pounds).

B150C01A-AAT

Larger ChildrenIt is recommended that all children who are toolarge for child seats occupy the rear seat anduse the available lap/shoulder belts. The lapportion should be fastened snug on the hipsand as low as possible. Check belt fit periodi-cally. A child's squirming could move the beltout of position. If the larger child (over age 13) is in the frontseat, the child should be securely restrained bythe seat belt. Under no circumstances shouldthe child be allowed to stand or kneel on theseat. Children are afforded the most safety in

the event of an accident when they are re-strained by a proper restraint system in the rearseat.

B150D01A-AAT

Pregnant WomenThe use of a seat belt is recommended forpregnant women to lessen the chance of injuryin an accident. When a seat belt is used the lapbelt portion, it should be placed as low andsnugly as possible on the hips, not across theabdomen. Forspecific recommendations, con-sult a physician.

B150E01A-AAT

Injured PersonA seat belt should be used when an injuredperson is being transported. When this is nec-essary, you should consult a physician for rec-ommendations.

ZB090F1-A

One Person Per BeltTwo people (including children) should neverattempt to use a single seat belt. This couldincrease the severity of injuries in case of anaccident.

B150Q01AAAT

Do Not Lie DownTo reduce the chance of injuries in the event ofan accident, and to achieve maximum effec-tiveness of the restraint system, all passengers

This system is controlled by the driver's doorlock and operates the passenger door locks. When the driver's door is locked, the passengerdoors are locked automatically. If a rear door is open when the door lock switchin depressed, it will remain locked when closed. If the front passenger door is open when thedoor lock switch is locked, the outside doorhandle must be held in the raised position. When the door is closed, the door will remainlocked. All doors will be unlocked automaticallywhenever the driver's door is unlocked wnetherby key or door lock switch.

should be sitting up and the front seats shouldbe in an upright position when the car is mov-ing. A seat belt cannot provide proper protec-fion if the person is lying down in the rear seator if the front seat is in a reclined position.

WARNING:Sitting in a reclined position or lying downwhen your vehicle is in motion can be dan-gerous. Even If you buckle up, your safetybelts can't do thelr job when you're reclined. The shoulder belt can't do Its job because itwon't be agalnst your body. Instead, it wlllbe in front of you. In a crash you could gointo it, recelving serious neck or other inju-ries.The lap belt can't do its job either. In a crashthe belt could go up over your abdomen. The belt forces would be there, not at yourpelvlc bones. This could cause serious internal injuries. For proper protectlon when the vehicle is inmotion, have the seatback upright. Then sitback in the seat and wear your safety beltproperly.

B160A01A-AAT

CARE OF SEAT BELTSSeat beltsystems should never be disassembledor modified. In addition, care should be taken toassure that seat belts and belt hardware are notdamaged by seat hinges, doors or other abuse.

WARNING:When you return the rear seatback to itsupright position after the rear seatback wasfolded down, be careful not to damage theseat belt webbing or buckle. Be sure that thewebbing or buckle does not get caught orpinched in the rear seat.

B160B01A-AAT

Periodic InspectfonIt is recommended that all seat belts be in-spected periodically for wear or damage of anykind. Parts of the system that are damagedshould be replaced as soon as possible.

B160C01A-AAT

Keep Belts Clean and DrySeat belts should be kept clean and dry. If beltsbecome dirty, they can be cleaned using a mildsoap solution and warm water. Bleach, dye, strong detergents or abrasives should not beused because they may damage and weakenthefabric.

B160D01A-AAT

When to Replace Seat BeltsEntire in-use seat belt assembly or assembliesshould be replaced if the vehicle has beeninvolved in an accident. This should be doneeven if no damage is visible. Additional ques-tions concerning seat belt operation should bedirected to your Hyundai Dealer.

You can adjust the height of the shoulder beltanchor to one of the 4 positions. If the height of the adjusting seat belt is too nearyour neck, you will not be getting the mosteffective protection. The shoulder portion shouldbe adjusted so that it lies across your chest andmidway over your shoulder nearest the doorand not your neck.To adjust the height of seat belt anchor, loweror raise the height adjuster into an appropriateposition when the height adjuster button ispushed.Release the button to lock the anchor intoposition. CHILD RESTRAINT SYSTEM(If installed)Children riding in the car should sit in the rearseat and must always be restrained to minimizethe risk of injury in an accident, sudden stop orsudden maneuver. According to accident sta-tistics, children are safer when properly re-strained in the rear seats than in the front seat.Larger children should use one of the seat beltsprovided. You are required by law to use safety restraintsfor children. If small children ride in your vehicleyou must put them in a child restraint system(safety seat). For smaller children, you must use a commer-cially available child restraint system that meetsthe requirements of ECE-R(Economic Com-mission of Europe-Regulation)-16.Children could be injured in a crash if theirrestraints are not properly secured. For smallchildren and babies, a child seat or infant seatmust be used. Before buying a particular childrestraint system, make sure it fits your car seatand seat belts, and fits your child. Follow all theinstructions provided by the manufacturer wheninstalling the child restraint system.

WARNING:o A child restraint system must be placed

in the rear seat. Never install a child orinfant seat on the front passenger's seat.Should an accident occur and cause the

1-14

passenger side airbag to deploy, it couldseverely injure or klll an Infant or childseated in an infant or child seat Thus, only use a child restraint in the rear seatof your vehicle.

o Since a safety belt or child restraint sys-tem can become very hot if it Is left in aclosed vehicle, be sure to check the seatcover and buckles before placing a childthere.

o When the child restraint system Is not Inuse, store It In the trunk or fasten it witha safety belt so that it will not be thrownforward in the case of a sudden stop oran accident.

o Children who are too large to be in achild restraint should slt In the rear seatand be restrained with the available lap/shoulder belts.

o Always make sure that the shoulder beltportion of the outboard lap/shoulder beltIs positloned midway over the shoulder, never across the neck. Movlng the childcloser to the center of the vehicle mayhelp provide a good shoulder belt f it. Thelap belt portion of the lap/shoulder beltor the center seat lap belt must always bepositioned as low as possible on thechild's hips and as snug as possible.

o If the seat belt will not properly fit thechild, we recommend the use of an ap-proved booster seat In the rear seat inorder to raise the child's seating heightso that the seat belt will properly fit the

child. Before purchasing a booster seat, make sure that it meets appllcable ECER-16 and that It Is satlsfactory for usewith thls vehicle.

o Never allow a child to stand up or kneelon the seat.

o Never use an infant carrler or child safetyseat that "hooks" over a seatback; it maynot provide adequate security in an acci-dent.

o Never allow a child tobeheldinaperson'sarms while they are in a moving vehicle,as this could result in serious injury tothe child In the event of an accident or asudden stop. Holding a child In a movingvehicle does not provide the child withany means of protection durlng an acci-dent, even If the person holding the childis wearing a seat belt.

Pre-tensioner Seat Belt(Without A/BAG)Ordinarily the pre-tensioner seat belt operatesin the same way as E.L.R (Emergency LockingRetractor) type (When vehicles stop sudden-ly, the belt will lock into the position. It willalso lock If you try to lean forward tooqulckly.). However, when vehicles crash, theretractor rewinds the belt webbing. This willrestrain the passenger movement quickly andalso reduce the slack between passenger andbelt webbing.

NOTE:o When the pre-tensioner seat belt Is acti-

vated, there may be an exploslon nolse.Thls nolse Is normal and Is not hazard-ous.

o Pre-tensioner seat belt Is deslgned tooperate only when a sufflciently severeImpact occurs and It will be only operat-ed once.

WARNING:If the pre-tensioner seat belt was actlvated, never attempt to replace it by yourself. Itmust be replaced by an authorized HyundaiDealer.

SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT(AIRBAG) SYSTEM (If Installed)

Your Hyundai is equipped with a SupplementalRestraint (Airbag) System. The indications ofthe system's presence are the letters 'SRS AIRBAG" embossed on the airbag pad cover in thesteering wheel and the passenger's side frontpanel pad above the glove box.

The Hyundai SRS consists of airbags installedunder the pad covers in the center of thesteering wheel and the passenger's side frontpanel above the glove box. The purpose of theSRS is to provide the vehicle's driver and/or thefront passenger with additional protection thanthat offered by the seat-belt system alone, in

Page 28: Hyundai Accent

j of a frontal impact of sufficient severity.

FE:I sure to read information about the SRSi the labels provlded on the backside ofi sun visor and in the glove box.

VARNING:As Its name implies, the SRS is designedto work wtth, and be supplemental to, thedrlver's and the passenger's three pointseat belt systems and is not a substitutefor them. Therefore your seat belts mustbe worn at all times while the vehlcle is inmotion. In addltlon, the airbags deployonly In certain frontal impact conditionssevere enough to likely cause signiflcantInjury to the vehicle occupants. The SRS is designed to deploy the airbagsonly when an impact is sufficiently se-vere and when the Impact angle is lessthan 30° from the forward longitudinalaxis of the vehlcle and wfll not deploy inside, rear or rollover impacts. Additional-ly, the airbags will only deploy once. Thus, seat belts must be worn at alltlmes. For maximum safety protection in alltypes of crashes, all occupants Includingthe driver should always wear their seatbelts whether or not an airbag is alsoprovided at their seating posltlon to min-imize the risk of severe injury or death inthe event of a crash. Do not sit or lean

unnecessarily close to the airbag whllethe vehicle Is in motion.

o The SRS airbag system must deploy veryrapidly to provlde protection in a crash. Ifan occupant is out of posltlon because ofnot wearing a seat belt, the airbag mayforcefully contact the occupant causlngserlous or fatal injuries.

SRS Components and Functions

The SRSCM continually monitors all elementswhile the ignition is "ON" to determine if afrontal or near-frontal impact is severe enoughto require airbag deployment.

The SRS service reminder indicator (SRI) onthe instrument panel will blink for about 6 sec-onds after the ignition key is tumed to the "ON"position or after the engine is started, afterwhich the SRI should go out.

The SRS consists of the following components:

- Driver's Side Airbag Module- Passenger's Side Airbag Module- Knee Bolster- SRS Service Reminder Indicator (SRI)- SRS Control Module (SRSCM)

1-19

Page 29: Hyundai Accent

FEATURES OF YOUR HYUNDAI

The airbag modules are located both in thecenter of the steering wheel and in the frontpassenger's panel above the glove box. Whenthe SRSCM detects a considerable impact tothe front of the vehicle, it will automaticallydeploy the airbags.

Passenger's side Airbag

Upon deployment, tearseams molded directlyinto the pad covers will separate under pres-

1-20

sure from the expansion of the airbags. Furtheropening of the covers then allows full inflation ofthe airbags.

A fully inflated airbag in combination with aproperty wom seat belt slows the driver's or thepassenger's forward motion, thus reducing therisk of head and chest injury.

After complete inflation, the airbag immediatelystarts deflating, enabling the driverto maintainforward visibility.

CAUTION:When installing a contalner of liquld alrfreshener inside a vehicle, do not place itnear the instrument cluster nor on the In-strument panel pad surface. If there is anyleakage from the air freshener onto theseareas (instrument cluster, instrument panelpad or air ventilator), it may damage these

parts. If the liquid from the air freshenerdoes leak onto these areas, wash them withwater immediately.

WARNING:o When the SRS Is activated, there may be

a loud noise and flne dust will be re-leased throughout the vehicle. Theseconditions are normal and are not haz-ardous. However, the fine dust generat-ed during airbag deployment may causeskin Irritatlon. Be sure to wash your handsand face thoroughly with lukewarm wa-ter and a mlld soap after an accident inwhich the airbags were deployed.

o The SRS can function only when theignition key Is in the "ON" posltion. If theSRS SRI does not come on, or continu-ously remains on, after flashing for ataout6 seconds when the ignition keyisturnedto the "ON" position, or after the engineis started, or comes on while drlving, theSRS Is not working properly. If this oc-curs, have your vehicle immediately in-spected by your Hyundai dealer.

o Before you replace a fuse or disconnecta battery terminal, turn the ignition key tothe "LOCK" position or remove the igni-tion key. Never remove or replace the airbag related fuse(s) when the Ignition keyis In the "ON" position. Failure to heedthis warning will cause the SRS SRI toilluminate.

get in, open the windows for a few minutesto expel the hot air.

o When you are using the air conditioningsystem, keep all windows closed to keephot air out.

o When moving slowly, as in heavy traffic, shift to a lower gear. This increases enginespeed, which in tum increases the speed ofthe air conditioning compressor.

o On steep grades, turn the air conditioner offto avoid the possibility of the engine over-

During winter months or in periods when theair conditioner is not used regulariy, run theair conditioner once every month for a fewminutes. This will help circulate the lubri-cants and keep your system in peak operat-ing condition.

STEREO SOUND SYSTEMHow Car Audio Works

FM reception /7 lonosphere

AM and FM radio signals are broadcast fromtransmitter towers located around your city. They are intercepted by the radio antenna onyour car. This signal is then received by theradio and sent to your car speakers. When a strong radio signal has reached yourvehicle, the precise engineering of your audiosystem ensures high quality reproduction. How-ever, in some cases the signal coming to yourvehicle is not strong and clear. This can be dueto factors such as the distance from the radiostation, closeness of other strong radio stationsor the presence of buildings, bridges or otherlarge obstructions in the area.

AM receptionlonosphere

AM signal reception is usually better than FMreception. This is because AM radio waves aretransmitted at low frequency. These long, lowfrequency radio waves can follow the curvatureof the earth rather than travelling straight outinto the atmosphere. In addition, they curvearound obstructions so that they can providebetter signal coverage. Because of this, clearAM broadcasts can be received at greater dis-tances than FM broadcasts.

1-48

Page 58: Hyundai Accent

FEATURES OF YOUR HYUNDAI

FM broadcasts are transmitted at high f requen-cy and do not bend to follow the earth's surface.Because of this, FM broadcasts generally beginto fade at short distances from the station. Also,FM signals are easily affected by buildings, mountains, or other obstructions. These canresult in certain listening conditions which mightlead you to believe a problem exists with yourradio. The following conditions are normal anddo not indicate radio trouble:

Fading - As your car moves away from theradio station, the signal will weaken andsound will begin to fade. When this occurs,we suggest that you select another strongerstation.Flutter/Static - Weak FM signals or largeobstructions between the transmitter andyour radio can disturb the signal causingstatic or fluttering noises to occur. Reducingthe treble level may lessen this effect untilthe disturbance clears.

Station Swapping - As an FM signal weak-ens, another more powerful signal near thesame frequency may begin to play. This isbecause your radio is designed to lock ontothe clearest signal. If this occurs, selectanother station with a stronger signal.Multi-Path Cancellation - Radio signals be-ing received from several directions cancause distortion or fluttering. This can becaused by a direct and a reflected signalfrom the same station, or by signals fromtwo stations with close frequencies. If thisoccurs, select another station until the con-dition has passed.

Care of Cassette Tapes

Proper care of your cassette tapes will extendthe tape life and increase your listening enjoy-ment. Aiways protect your tapes and cassettecases from direct sunlight, severe cold anddusty conditions. When not in use, cassettesshould always be stored in the protective cas-sette case in which they were originally sup-plied. When the vehicle is very hot or cold, allowthe interior temperature to become more com-fortable before listening to your cassettes.

o Never leave a cassette inserted in the play-er when not being played. This could dam-age the tape player unit and the cassettetape.

o We strongly recommend against the use oftapes longer than C-60 (60 minutes total).Tapes such as C-120 or C-180 are very thinand do not perform as well in the automotiveenvironment.

Page 70: Hyundai Accent

FEATURES OF YOUR HYUNDAI

Be sure that the cassette label is not looseor peeling off or tape ejection may be diffi-cult.Never touch or soil the actual audio tapesurfaces.Keep all magnetized objects, such as elec-tric motors, speakers or transformers awayfrom your cassette tapes and tape playerunit.Store cassettes in a cool, dry place with theopen side facing down to prevent dust fromsettling in the cassette body.Avoid repeated fast reverse usage to replayone given tune or tape section. This cancause poor tape winding to occur, and even-tually cause excessive internal drag andpoor audio quality in the cassette. If thisoccurs, it can sometimes be corrected byfast winding the tape from end to end sever-al times. If this does not correct the problem,do not continue to use the tape in yourvehicle.

Cotton applicatorSSAR042B

The playback head, capstan and pinch roll-ers will develop a coating of tape residuethat can result in deterioration of soundquality, such as a wavering sound. Theyshould be cleaned monthly using a commer-cially available head cleaning tape or spe-cial solution available from audio specialtyshops. Follow the supplier's directions care-fully and never oil any part of the tape playerunit.Always be sure that the tape is tightJy woundon its reei before inserting in the player.Rotate a pencil in the drive sprockets towind up any slack.

NOTE:Look at a tape before you insert it.If the tape is loose, tighten it by turning oneof the hubs with a pencil or your finger. Ifthe label is peeling off, do not put it in theplayer. It may cause the tape to Jam in thedrive mechanism when you try to eject it.Oo not leave tape sitting where they areexposed to high temperature or, high hu-mldlty, such as on top of the dashboard orin the player. If a tape is exposed to extreme heat or cold, let it reach a moderate temperature beforeputting it in the player.

the engine speed to increase to the pointthat the tachometer will enter the red zone.Such over rewing of the engine may possi-bly cause engine damage.

C070B01A-AAT

Using the ClutchThe clutch should be pressed all the way to thefloor before shifting, then released slowly. The'clutch pedal should always be used after fullyretuming to the original position. Do not restyour foot on the clutch pedal while driving. Thiscan cause unnecessary wear. Do not partiallyengage the clutch to hold the car on an incline. This causes unnecessary wear. Use the park-ing brake to hold the car on an incline. Do notoperate the clutch pedal rapidly and repeatedly.

C070O02A-AAT

Good Driving Practiceso Never take the car out of gear and coast

down a hill. This is extremely hazardous.Always leave the car in gear.

o Don't "ride" the brakes. This can cause themto overheat and malfunction. Instead, whenyou are driving down a long hill, slow downand shift to a lower gear. When you do this, engine braking will help slow the car.

o Slow down before shifting to a lower gear. This will help avoid over-rewing the engine, which can cause damage.

o Slow down when you encountercrosswinds. This gives you much better control of yourcar.

o Be sure the car is completely stopped be-fore you attempt to shift into reverse. Thetransaxle can be damaged if you do not. Toshift into reverse, depress the clutch, movethe shift lever to neutral, wait three seconds, then shift to the reverse position.

o Exercise extreme caution when driving on aslippery surface. Be especially careful whenbraking, accelerating or shifting gears. On aslippery surface, an abrupt change in vehi-cle speed can cause the drive wheels tolose traction and the vehicle to go out ofcontrol.

CAUTION:o The risk of rollover is greatly Increased if

you lose control of your vehicle at high-way speeds.

o Loss of control often occurs if two ormore wheels drop off the roadway andthe driver oversteers to reenter the road-way.

o In the event your vehicle leaves the road-way, do not steer sharply. Instead, slowdown before pulllng back into the travellanes.

AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE

The highly efficient Hyundai automatic transaxlehas fourforward speeds and one reverse speed. It has a conventional shift pattem as shown inthe illustration. At night, with the first position ofthe multi-function switch, the appropriate sym-bol on the shift pattem indicator will be illuminat-ed according to the range selected.

2-6

CAUTION:Never shift into "R" or "P" position whilethe car is moving.

NOTE:<^> Depress the brake pedal and push the

button when shifting^ Push the button when shifting^ The selector lever can be shifted freely.

For optimum fuel economy, accelerate gradu-ally. The transaxle will automatically shift to thesecond, third and overdrive gears.

C090B01A-AAT

The function of each position is asfollows:

o P (Park):Use to hold the vehicle in place when parked orwhile starting the engine; shift the select lever tothe "P" position. Whenever parking the car, apply the parking brake and shift the selectorlever to the "P" (Park) position.

CAUTION:Never place the selector lever in the "P"position unless the vehicle is fully stopped.Failure to observe this caution will causesevere damage to the transaxle.

C090C01A-AAT

o R (Reverse):Use for backing up the vehicle. Bring the car toa complete stop before shifting the selectorlever to "R" position.

C090D02A-AAT

o N(Neutral):In the "N" position, the transaxle is in neutral, which means that no gears are engaged. Theengine can be started with the shift lever in "N"position, although this is not recommended ex-cept if the engine stalls while the car is moving.

C090E01A-GAT

o D (Drive):Use for normal driving. The transaxle will auto-matically shift through a four-gear sequence, giving best economy and power. Never down-shift manually to '2' position or "L" positionwhen vehicle speed is more than 95 km/h (60mph).

C090F01A-MT

o 2 (Second gear):Use for driving on a slippery road, hill climbingor engine braking downhill. "2" automaticallyshifts between 1st and 2nd gears. This means that no shift-up to 3rd gear isperformed. However, the shift-up to 3rd gear isdone when the car speed exceeds a certainvalue to prevent the engine from over-revving.Manually move the selector to "D" retuming tonormal driving condition.

Page 78: Hyundai Accent

DRIVING YOUR HYUNDAI

C090G01A-GAT

o L (Low gear):Use for driving up a very steep grade or forengine braking when descending steep hills. When downshifting to "L", the transaxle willtemporarily remain in second gear until thevehicle has slowed enough for low gear toengage. Do not exceed 50 km/h.(30 mph) in lowgear.

C090H01A GAT

NOTE:o For smooth and safe operatlon, depress

the brake pedal when shifting from "Neu-tral" position or "Park" position to a for-ward or reverse gear.

o The brake pedal fully depressed in orderto move the shift lever from the "P"(Park) position to any of the other posi-tions.

o It \s always posslble to shift from "R","N", "D", "2", "L" position to "P" posi-tion.

C 090101A-AAT

CAUTION:o Shift into "R" and "P" position only when

the vehicle has completely stopped.o Do not accelerate the engine In reverse

or any of the forward positlons with thebrakes applied.

o Always apply the footbrake when shift-ing from "P" or "N", to "R", "D", "2" or"L" position.

o Oo not use the "P" (Park) position inplace of the parking brake. Always setthe parking brake, shift the transaxle Into"P" (Park) position and turn off the igni-tion when you leave the vehicle, evenmomentarily. Never leave the vehicle un-attended whlle the engine is running.

o Check the automatic transaxle fluld levelregularly, and add fluid as necessary.

C090N02A-AAT

Good Driving Practiceso Never move the gear selector lever from "P"

or "N" to any other position with the acceler-ator pedal depressed.

o Never move the gear selector lever into "P"when the vehicle is in motion.

o Be sure the car is completely stopped be-fore you attempt to shift into "R".

o Never take the car out of gear and coastdown a hill. This may be extremely hazard-ous. Always leave the car in gear whenmoving.

o Do not "ride" the brakes. This can causethem to overheat and malfunction. Instead, when you are driving down a long hill, slowdown and shift to a lower gear. When you dothis, engine braking will help slow the car.

o Slow down before shifting to a lower gear.Otherwise, the lower gear may not be en-

o Always use the parking brake. Do not de-pend on placing the transaxle in "P" to keepthe car from moving.

o Exercise extreme caution when driving on aslippery surface. Be especially careful whenbraking, accelerating or shifting gears. On aslippery surface, an abrupt change in vehi-cle speed can cause the drive wheels tolose traction and the vehicle to go out ofcontrol.

o Tum the overdrive switch on for good fueleconomy and smooth driving. If engine brak-ing is needed in the "D" range or if repeatedupshifting and downshifting between the 3rdand 4th gear is needed when climbing agentle slope, it is recommended that theoverdrive switch be tumed off. Tum theoverdrive switch back on immediately after-ward.

WARNING:o The risk of rollover Is greatly Increased If

you lose control of your vehicle at high-wayspeeds.

o Loss of control often occurs if two ormore wheels drop off the roadway andthe driver oversteers to reenter the road-way.

o In the event your vehicle leaves the road-way, do not steer sharply. Instead, slowdown before pulllng back into the travellanes.

GOOD BRAKING PRACTICESWARNING:Nothing should be carrled on top of thecargo area cover behlnd the rear seat. Ifthere were an accldent or a sudden stop, such objects could move forward and causedamage to the vehicle or injure the occu-pants.

o After being parked, check to be sure theparking brake is not engaged and that theparking brake indicator light is out beforedriving away.

o Driving through water may get the brakeswet. They can also get wet when the car iswashed. Wet brakes can be dangerous!Your car will not stop as quickly if the brakesare wet. Wet brakes cause the car to pull toone side. To dry the brakes, apply the brakeslightly until the braking action retums tonormal, taking care to keep the car undercontrol at all times. If the braking action doesnot retum to normal, stop as soon as it issafe to do so and call your Hyundai dealerfor assistance.

o Don't coast down hills with the car out ofgear. This is extremely hazardous. Keep thecar in gear at all times, use the brakes toslow down, then shift to a lower gear so thatengine braking will help you maintain a safe

speed.o Don't "ride" the brake pedal. Resting your

foot on the brake pedal while driving can bedangerous because it can result in the brakesoverheating and losing their effectiveness. Italso increases the wear of the brake components.

o If a tire goes flat while you are driving, applythe brakes gently and keep the car pointedstraight ahead while you slow down. Whenyou are moving slowly enough for it to besafe to do so, pull off the road and stop in asafe place.

o If your car is equipped with an automatictransaxle, don't let your car creep forward. To avoid creeping forward, keep your footon the brake pedal when the car is stopped.

o Use caution when parking on a hill. Engagethe parking brake and place the gear selec-tor lever in "P" (automatic transaxle) or infirst or reverse gear (manual transaxle). Ifyour car is facing downhill, tum the frontwheels into the curb to help keep the carfrom rolling. If your car is facing uphilt, tumthe front wheels away from the curb to helpkeep the car from rolling. If there is no curbor if it is required by other conditions to keepthe car from rolling, block the wheels.

o Under some conditions your parking brakecan freeze in the engaged position. This ismost likely to happen when there is anaccumulation of snow or ice around or near

the rear brakes or if the brakes are wet. Ifthere is a risk that the parking brake mayfreeze, apply it only temporarily while youput the gear selector lever in "P" (automatic)or in first or reverse gear (manual transaxle)and block the rear wheels so the car cannotroll. Then release the parking brake.

o Do not hold the vehicle on the upgrade withthe accelerator pedal. This can cause thetransmission to overheat. Always use thebrake pedal or parking brake.

C120A02A-AAT

ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM(If installed)The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) is designedto prevent wheel lock-up during sudden brakingor on hazardous road surfaces. The ABS con-trol module monitors the wheel speed and con-trols the pressure applied to each brake. Thus,in emergency situations or on slick roads, yourABS will increase vehicle control during brak-ing.

NOTE:During ABS operation, a sllght pulsationmay be felt in the brake pedal when thebrakes are applied. Also, a noise may beheard in the engine compartment while driv-ing. These conditions are normal and indi-cate that the antl-lock brake system is func-tioning properly.

WARNING:Your ABS will not prevent accidents due toimproper or dangerous driving maneuvers.Even though vehicle control is improvedduring emergency braking, always maintaina safe distance between you and objectsahead. Vehicle speeds should always bereduced during extreme road conditions. The braking distance for cars equlpped withan anti-lock braking system may be longerthan for those without it in the followingroad conditions.

o Driving on rough, gravel or snow-cov-ered roads.

o Driving with tlre chalns Installed.o Driving on roads where the road surface

is pltted or has dlfferent surface height.

These roads should be driven at reducedspeeds. The safety features of an ABSequlpped vehicle should not be tested byhigh speed driving or cornerlng. This couldendanger the safety of yourself or others.

C140A01A-QAT

DRIVING FOR ECONOMYYou can save fuel and get more kilometers fromyour car if you follow these suggestions:

o Drive smoothly. Accelerate at a moderaterate. Don't make "jack-rabbit" starts or full-throttle shifts and maintain a steady cruis-ing speed. Don't race between stoplights.

Try to adjust your speed to that of the othertraffic so you don't have to change speedsunnecessarily. Avoid heavy traffic when-ever possible. Always maintain a safe dis-tance from other vehicles so you can avoidunnecessary braking. This also reducesbrake wear.Drive at a moderate speed. The faster youdrive, the more fuel your car uses. Driving ata moderate speed, especially on the high-way, is one of the most effective ways toreduce fuel consumption.Don't "ride" the brake or clutch pedal. Thiscan increase fuel consumption and also in-crease wear on these components. In addi-tion, driving with your foot resting on thebrake pedal may cause the brakes to over-heat, which reduces their effectiveness andmay lead to more serious consequences.Take care of your tires. Keep them inflatedto the recommended pressure. Incorrect in-flation, eithertoo much ortoo little, results inunnecessary tire wear. Check the tire pres-sures at least once a month.Be sure that the wheels are aligned cor-rectly. Improper alignment can result fromhitting curbs or driving too fast over irregu-lar surfaces. Poor alignment causes fastertire wear and may also result in other prob-lems as well as greater fuel consumption.Keep your car in good condition. For betterfuel economy and reduced maintenancecosts, maintain your car in accordance withthe maintenance schedule in Section 5. If

2-9

Page 81: Hyundai Accent

DRIVING YOUR HYUNDAIr

you drive your car in severe conditions, more frequent maintenance is required (seeSection 5 for details).

o Keep your car clean. For maximum service, your Hyundai should be kept clean and freeof corrosive materials. It is especially im-portant that mud, dirt, ice, etc. not be al-lowed to accumulate on the underside ofthe car. This extra weight can result in in-creased fuel consumption and also contrib-ute to corrosion.

o Travellightly.Don'tcarryunnecessary weightin your car. Weight is an enemy of good fueleconomy.

o Don't let the engine idle longer than neces-sary. If you are waiting (and not in traffic),tum off your engine and restart only whenyou're ready to go.

o Remember, your Hyundai does not requireextended warm-up. As soon as the engine isrunning smoothly, you can drive away. Inverycold weather, however, give your enginea slightly longer warm-up period.

o Don't "lug" or "over*rev" the engine. Luggingis driving too slowly in too high a gear result-ingin the engine bucking.lfthishappens, shiftto a lower gear. Over-rewing is racing theengine beyond its safe limit. This can beavoided by shifting at the recom-mendedspeeds.

o Use your air conditioning sparingly. The airconditioning system is operated by enginepowerso your fuel economy is reduced whenyou use it.

2-10

C150A01A-AAT

SMOOTH CORNERINGAvoid braking or gear changing in comers, especially when roads are wet. Ideally, comersshould always be taken under gentle accelera-tion. If you follow these suggestions, tire wearwill be held to a minimum.

C160A01A-AAT

WINTER DRIVINGThe more severe weather conditions of winterresult in greater wear and other problems. Tominimize the problems of winter driving, youshould follow these suggestions:

C160B01A-GAT

Snowy or lcy ConditionsTo drive your vehicle in deep snow, it may beneoessary to use snow tires or to install tirechains on your tires. If snow tires are needed,it is necessary to select tires equivalent in sizeand type to the original equipment tires. Failureto do so may adversely affect the safety andhandling of your car. Speeding, rapid accelera-tion, sudden brake applications, and sharp tumsare potentially very hazardous practices. Dur-ing deceleration, use engine braking to thefullest extent. Sudden brake applications onsnowy or icy roads may cause skids to occur. You need to keep sufficient distance betweenthe vehicle in front and your vehicle. Also, applythe brake gently. It should be noted that installing tire chains onthe tire will provide a greater driving force, butwill not prevent side skids.

NOTE:Tire chains are not legal In all provlnces.Check province laws before fltting tirechains.

C160C01A-AAT

Use High Quality Ethylene GlycolCoolantYour Hyundai is delivered with high qualityethylene glycol coolant in the cooling system. Itis the only type of coolant that should be usedbecause it helps prevent corrosion in the cool-ing system, lubricates the water pump andprevents freezing. Be sure to replace or replen-ish your coolant in accordance with the main-tenance schedule in Section 5. Before winter, have your coolant tested to assure that itsfreezing point is sufficient for the temperaturesanticipated during the winter.

C160D01A-AAT

Check Battery and CablesWinter puts additional burdens on the batterysystem. Visually inspect the battery and cablesas described in Section 6. The level of chargein your battery can be checked by your Hyundaidealer or a service station.

C160E01A-AAT

Change to "Winter Weight" Oil ifNecessaryIn some climates it is recommended that alower viscbsity "winter weight" oil be used dur-ing cold weather. See Section 9 for recommen-

dations. If you aren't sure what weight oil youshould use, consult your Hyundai dealer.

C160F01A-AAT

Check Spark Plugs and IgnitionSystemInspect your spark plugs as described in Sec-tion 6 and replace them if necessary. Alsocheck all ignition wiring and components to besure they are not cracked, worn or damaged inany way.

C160G01AGAT

To Keep Locks from FreezingTo keep the locks from freezing, squirt anapproved de-icer fluid or glycerine into the keyopening. If a lock is covered with ice, squirt itwith an approved de-icing fluid to remove theice. If the lock is frozen intemally, you may beable to thaw it out by using a heated key.Mandle the heated key with care to avoid bum-ing your fingers.

NOTE:The proper temperature for using the immo-bilizer key is from -40°C to 80°C. tf you heatthe immobilizer key over 80°C to open thefrozen lock, it may cause damage to thetransponder in its head.

C160H01A-AAT

Use Approved Anti-Freeze in WindowWasher SystemTo keep the water in the window washer sys-tem from freezing, add an approved anti-freezesolution in accordance with instructions on thecontainer. Window washer anti-freeze is avail-able from Hyundai dealers and most auto partsoutlets. Do not use engine coolant or othertypes of anti-freeze as these may damage thefinish.C160I01A-AAT

Don't Let Your Parking Brake FreezeUnder some conditions your parking brake canfreeze in the engaged position. This is mostlikely to happen when there is an accumulationof snow or ice around or near the rear brakes orif the brakes are wet. If there is a risk theparking brake may freeze, apply it only tempo-rarily while you put the gear selector lever in"P" (automatic) or in first or reverse gear (man-ual transaxle) and block the rear wheels so thecar cannot roll. Then release the parking brake.

C160J01A-AAT

Don't Let Ice and Snow AccumulateUnderneathUnder some conditions, snow and ice can buildup under the fenders and interfere with thesteering. When driving in severe winter condi-tions where this may happen, you should peri-odically check undemeath the car to be surethe movement of the front wheels and thesteering components are not obstructed.

C160K01A-AAT

Carry Emergency EquipmentDepending on the severity of the weather whereyou drive your car, you should carry appropri-ate emergency equipment. Some of the itemsyou may want to carry include tire chains, towstraps or chains, fiashlight, emergency flares, sand, a shovel, jumper cables, a windowscraper, gloves, ground cloth, coveralls, a blan-ket, etc.

C170A01A-AAT

HIGH SPEED MOTORINGPre-Trip Inspections1. Tires;Adjust the tire inflation pressures for highwaydriving. Lowtire inflation pressures will result inoverheating and possible failure of the tires.Avoid using wom or damaged tires which mayresult in reduced traction or tire failure.

NOTE:Never exceed the maximum tire inflationpressure shown on the tires.

2. Fuel, engine coolant and engine oil; Highspeed travel consumes 1.5 times more fuelthan urban motoring. Do not forget to checkboth engine coolant and engine oil.

3. Drive belt;A loose or damaged drive belt may result inoverheating of the engine.

USE OF LIGHTSCheck your lights regulariy for correct operationand always keep them clean. When drivingduring the day in conditions of poor visibility, itis helpful to drive with headlights on low beam. This enables you to be seen as well as to see.

C190A02A-GAT

TRAILER OR VEHICLE TOWINGIf you are considering towing with your car, youshould first check with your Province Depart-ment of Motor Vehicles to determine their legalrequirements.Since laws vary from province to province, therequirements for towing trailers, cars, othertypes of vehicles, or apparatus may differ. Askyour Hyundai dealer for further details beforetowing.

CAUTION:Do not do any towing with your car duringits first 2,000km (1,200 miles) in order toallow the engine to properly break in. Fail-ure to heed this caution may result in seri-ous engine or transaxle damage.

C190B01S-AAT

Trailer HitchesSelect the proper hitch and ball combination, making sure that if s location is compatible withthat of the trailer or vehicle being towed.Use a quality non-equalizing hitch which distrib-utes the tongue load uniformly throughout thechassis.2-12

The hitch should be bolted securely to the carand installed by a qualified technidan. DO NOTUSE A HITCH DESIGNED FOR TEMPORARYINSTALLATION AND NEVER USE ONE THATATTACHES ONLY TO THE BUMPER.

C190C01Y-GAT

Trailer BrakesIf your trailer is equipped with a braking system, make sure it conforms to federal and/or localregulations and that it is properly installed andoperating correctly.

NOTE:If you tow a trailer or vehicle, your car willrequire more frequent malntenance due tothe additional load. See Malntenance UnderSevere Usage Conditions" on page 5-4.

CAUTION:o Never connect a trailer brake system di-

rectly to the vehicle brake system.o When towing a trailer on steep grades (in

excess of 12%) pay close attention to theengine coolant temperature gauge to en-sure the engine does not overheat. If theneedle of the coolant temperature gaugemoves across the dlal towards "H" (HOT),pull over and stop as soon as it is safe todo so, and allow the engine to idle until itcools down. You may proceed once theengine has cooled sufficiently.

C190001A-GAT

Safety ChainsShould the hitch connection between your carand the trailer or vehicle you are towing fail, thetrailer or vehicle could wander dangerouslyacross other lanes of traffic and ultimately col-lide with another vehicle. To eliminate this po-tentJally dangerous situation, safety chains, at-tached between your car and the trailer ortowed vehicle, are required in most provinces.

Trailer or Vehicle Towing Tips1. Before towing, check hitch and safety chain

connections as well as proper operation ofthe trailer running lights, brake lights, andturn signals.

2. Always drive your vehicle at a moderatespeed (Less than 100 km/h).

3. Trailer towing requires more fuel than nor-mal conditions.

4. To maintain engine braking efficiency andelectrical charging performance, do not usefifth gear (manual transaxle) or overdrive(automatic transaxle).

5. Always secure items in the trailer to preventload shift while driving.

6. Check the condition and air pressure of alltires on the trailer and your car. Low tirepressure can seriously affect the handling. Also check the spare tire.

7. The vehicle/trailer combination is more af-fected by crosswind and buffeting. When being passed by a large vehicle, keepa constant speed and steer straight ahead. If there is too much wind buffeting slowdown to get out of the other vehicle's airturbulence.

8. When parking your car and trailer, especial-ly on a hill, be sure to follow all the normalprecautions. Turn your front wheel into thecurb, set the parking brake fimnly, and putthe transaxle in 1st or Reverse (manual) orPark (automatic). In addition, place wheelchocks at each of the trailer's tires.

9. If the trailer has electric brakes, start yourvehicle and trailer moving, and then applythe trailer brake controller by hand to besure the brakes are working. This lets youcheck your electrical connection at the sametime.

lO.During your trip, check occasionally to besure that the load is secure, and that thelights and any trailer brakes are stjll working.

H.Avoid jerky starts, sudden acceleration orsudden stops.

12.Avoid sharp tums and rapid lane changes.13. Avoid holding the brake pedal down too long

or too frequentiy. This could cause the brakesto overheat, resulting in reduced brakingefficiency.

14. When going down a hill, shift into a lowergear and use the engine braking effect. When ascending a long grade, downshift thetransaxle to a lower gear and reduce speedto reduce chances of engine overioadingand/or overheating.

15.lf you have to stop while going uphill, do nothold the vehicle in place by pressing on theaccelerator. This can cause the automatictransaxle to overheat. Use the parking brakeorfootbrake.

NOTE:When towing check transaxle fluld morefrequentiy.

CAUTION:If overheating should occur when towing,(temperature gauge reads near red zone),taklng the followlng actlon may reduce orelimlnate the problem.

1. Tum off the air conditioner.2. Reduce highway speed.3. Select a lower gear when going uphill.4. While in stop and go traffic, place the gear

selection in park or neutral and idle theengine at a higher speed.

o The gas produced by the battery during thejump-start operation is highly explosive. Donot smoke or allow a spark or open flame inthevicinity.

o The battery being used to provide the jumpstart must be 12-volt. If you cannot deter-mine that it is a 12-volt battery, do notattempt to use it for the jump start.

o To jump start a car with a discharged bat-tery, follow this procedure exactly:

1. If the booster battery is installed in anothervehicle, be sure the two vehicles are nottouching.

2. Tum off all unnecessary lights and acces-sories in both vehicles.

3. Attachtheclampsofthejumpercableintheexact order shown on the illustration. Thatis, first, attach one clamp of the jumpercable to the positive (+) post or cable of thedischarged battery. Then attach the otherend of the same cable to the positive (+)post or cable of the booster battery. Next, using the other cable, attach one clamp tothe negative (-) post or cable of the boosterbattery. Then attach the other end of thatcable to a solid metal part of the engineaway from the battery. Do not connect thecable to any moving part.

4. Start the engine in the car with the boosterbattery and let it run for a few minutes. Thiswill help to assure that the booster battery isfully charged. During the jumping operation, run the engine in this vehicle at about 2000rpm.

5. Start your engine using the normal startingprocedure. After the engine starts, leave thejumper cables connected and let the enginerun at fast idle or about 2000 rpm for severalminutes.

3. If coolant is running out under the car orsteam is coming out from the hood, stop theengine. Do not open the hood until the cool-ant has stopped running or the steaming hasstopped. If there is no visible loss of coolantand no steam, leave the engine running andcheck to be sure the engine cooling fan isoperating. If the fan is not running, turn theengine off.

4. Check to see if the water pump drive belt ismissing. If it is not missing, check to see thatit is tight. If the drive belt seems to besatisfactory, check for coolant leaking fromthe radiator, hoses or under the car. (If theair conditioner had been in use, it is normalfor cold water to be draining from it whenyou stop).

WARNING:While the engine is running, keep hands, long hair and clothing away from movingparts such as the fan and drive belts toprevent injury.

5. If the water pump drive belt is broken orcoolant is leaking out, stop the engine im-mediately and call the nearest Hyundai deal-er for assistance.

WARNING:Do not remove the radiator cap when theengine is hot. This may allow coolant to beblown out of the opening and cause serlousburns.

6. If you cannot find the cause of the overheat-ing, wait until the engine temperature hasretumed to normal. Then, if coolant hasbeen lost, carefully remove the radiator capand add water to bring the fluid level in thereservoir up to the halfway mark.

7. Proceed with caution, keeping alert for fur-ther signs of overheating. If overheating hap-pens again, call a Hyundai dealer for assis-tance.

CAUTION:Serious loss of coolant indlcates there is aleak in the cooling system and this shouldbe checked as soon as posslble by a Hyundaidealer.

CORROSION PREVENTION AND APPEARANCE CARE

4. KEEPING THOSEGOOD LOOKS

Corrosion Prevention &Appearance Care

E010A01A-AAT

CORROSION PROTECTIONProtecting Your Hyundai from Corro-sionBy using the most advanced design and con-struction practices to combat corrosion, Hyundaiproduces cars of the highest quality. However, this is only part of the job. To achieve the longterm corrosion resistance your Hyundai candeliver, theowner's cooperation and assistanceis also required.

E010B01A-AAT

Common Causes of CorrosionThe most common causes of corrosion on yourcar are:

o Road salt, dirt and moisture that is allowedto accumulate underneath the car.

o Removal of paint or protective coatings bystones, gravel, abrasion or minor scrapesand dents which leave unprotected metalexposed to corrosion.

E010C01A-AAT

High-Corrosion AreasIf you live in an area where your car is regularfyexposed to corrosive materials, corrosion pro-tection is particularly important. Some of thecommon causes of accelerated corrosion areroad salts, dust control chemicals, ocean airand industrial pollution.

E010D01A-AAT

Moisture Breeds CorrosionMoisture creates the conditions in which corro-sion is most likely to occur. For example, cor-rosion is accelerated by high humidity, particu-larly when temperatures are just above freez-ing. In such conditions, the corrosive material iskept in contact with the car surfaces by mois-ture that is slow to evaporate.Mud is a particular enemy of corrosion protec-tion because it is slow to dry and holds moisturein contact with the vehicle. Even though themud appears to be dry, it can still retain mois-ture and promote corrosion.High temperatures can also accelerate corro-sion of parts that are not properly ventilated sothe moisture can be dispersed. For all thesereasons, it is particularly important to keep yourcar clean and free of mud or accumulations ofother materials. This applies not only on thevisible surfaces but particularly to the undersideof the car.

E020A01A-AAT

TO HELP PREVENT CORROSIONYou can help prevent corrosion from gettingstarted by observing the following:

E020B01A-AAT

Keep Your Car CleanThe best way to prevent corrosion is to keepyour car clean and free of corrosive materials.Attention to the underside of the car is particu-lariy important.

o If you live in a high-corrosion area—whereroad salts are used, near the ocean, areaswith industrial pollution, acid rain, etc.—youshould take exlra care to prevent corrosion. In winter, hose off the underside of your carat least once a month and be sure to cleanthe underside thoroughly when winter isover.

o When cleaning undemeath the car, giveparticular attention to the components underthe fenders and other areas that are hiddenfrom view. Do a thorough job; just dampen-ing the accumulated mud ratherthan wash-ing it away will accelerate corrosion ratherthan prevent it. Water under high pressureand steam are particularly effective in re-moving accumulated mud and corrosivematerials.

o When cleaning lower door panels, rockerpanels and frame members, be sure thatdrain holes are kept open so that moisturecan escape and not be trapped inside to ac-celerate corrosion.

4-1

Page 95: Hyundai Accent

CORROSION PREVENTION AND APPEARANCE CARE

E020C01A-AAT

Keep Your Garage DryDon't park your car in a damp, poorly ventilatedgarage. This creates a favorable environmentfor corrosion. This is particulariy true if youwash your car in the garage or drive it into thegarage when it is still wet or covered with snow, ice or mud. Even a heated garage can contrib-ute to corrosion unless it is well ventilated somoisture is dispersed.

E020D01A-AAT

Keep Paint and Trim in Good ConditionScratches or chips in the finish should be cov-ered with "touch-up" paint as soon as possibleto reduce the possibility of corrosion. If baremetal is showing through, the attention of aqualified body and paint shop is recommended.

E020E01A-AAT

Don't Neglect the InteriorMoisture can collect under the floor mats andcarpeting to cause corrosion. Check under themats periodically to be sure the carpeting is dry.Use partJcular care if you carry f ertilizers, clean-ing materials or chemicals in the car. These should be carried only in proper contain-ers and any spills or leaks should be cleanedup, flushed with clear water and thoroughlydried.

4-2

E030A01A-AAT

WASHING AND WAXINGWashlng Your HyundaiNever wash your car when the surface is hotfrom being in the sun. Always wash your car inthe shade.

Wash your car frequently. Dirt is abrasive andcan scratch the paint if it is not removed. Airppllution or acid rain may damage the paint andtrim through chemical action if pollutants areallowed to remain in contact with the surface. Ifyou live near the ocean or in an area whereroad salts or dust control chemicals are used, you should pay particular attention to the under-side of the car. Start by rinsing the car toremove dust and loose dirt. In winter, or if youhave driven through mud or muddy water, besure to thoroughly clean the underside as well.Use a hard direct stream of water to removeaccumulations of mud or corrosive materials.Use a good quality car-washing solution andfollow the manufacturer's directions on the pack-age. These are available at your Hyundai deal-er or auto parts outlet. Don't use strong house-hold detergents, gasoline, strong solvents orabrasive cleaning powders as these may dam-age the finish.

Use a clean sponge or cloth, rinse it frequentlyand don't damage the finish by rubbing toohard. For stubbom spots, dampen them fre-quently and remove them a little at a time.

To clean whitewall tires, use a stiff brush orsoap-impregnated steel-wool scouring pad.

To clean plastic wheel covers, use a cleansponge or soft cloth and water.

To clean cast aluminum alloy wheels, use amild soap or neutral detergent. Do not useabrasive cleaners. Protect the bare-metal sur-faces by cleaning, polishing and waxing. Be-cause aluminum is subject to corrosion, be sureto give aluminum alloy wheels special attentionin winter. If you drive on salted roads, clean thewheels thoroughly afterwards.

After washing, be sure to rinse thoroughly. Ifsoapy water dries on the finish, streaking willresult.

When the weather is warm and the humiditylow, you may find it necessary to rinse eachsection immediately after washing to avoidstreaking.

After rinsing, dry the car using a damp chamoisor soft, absorbent cloth. The reason for dryingthe car Is to remove water from the car so it willdry without water spots. Don't rub, this candamage the finish.

If you find any nicks or scratches in the paint, use touch-up paint to cover them to preventcorrosion. To protect the paintwork of the caragainst corrosion, you must clean your Hyundai

Page 96: Hyundai Accent

CORROSION PREVENTION AND APPEARANCE CARE

(at least once a month). Give special attentionto the removal of salt, mud and other substanc-es on the underside of the splashboards of thecar. Make sure that the outlets and the under-side of the doors are open. Paint damage canbe caused by small accumulation of tar, indus-trial precipitation, tree resin, insects and birddroppings, when not removed immediately. If water alone is not strong enough to removethe accumulated dirt, use a mild car washingsolution. Be sure to rinse the surface afterwashing to remove the solution. Never allowthe solution to dry on the painted surfaces.

E030B01A-AAT

Spot CleaningDon't use gasoline, strong solvents or corrosivecleaning agents. These can damage the finishof the car. To remove road tar, use turpentineon a clean, soft cloth. Be gentle. To remove dead insects or tree sap, use warmwater and mild soap or car-washing solution.Soak the spot and rub gently. If the paint haslost its luster, use a commercial car-cleaningpolish.

E030C01A-AAT

Polishing and WaxingAlways wash and dry the car before polishingor waxing or using a combination cleaner andwax. Use a good quality commercial productand follow the manufacturer's directions on thecontainer. Polish and wax the bright trim piecesas well as the paint.

E030O01A-AAT

When to Wax AgainYou should polish and wax the car again whenwater no longer beads on a clean surface butspreads out over a larger area.

E030E01A-AAT

Maintaining BumpersSpecial precautions must be observed to pre-serve the appearance of the bumpers on yourHyundai. They are:

o Be careful not to spill battery electrolyte orhydraulic brake fluid on the bumpers. If youdo, wash it off immediately with clean water.

o Be gentle when cleaning the bumper sur-faces. They are made of soft plastic and thesurface can be damaged if mistreated. Donot use abrasive cleaners. Use warm waterand mild soap or car-washing solution.

o Do not expose the bumpers to high tem-peratures. For example, if you have yourcar repainted, do not leave the bumpers onthe car if the car is going to be placed in ahigh-temperature paint booth.

E040A01A-AAT

CLEANING THE INTERIORTo Clean the Vinyl UpholsteryTo clean the vinyl upholstery, first remove loosedirt and dust with a vacuum cleaner. Then applya solution of mild soap or detergent and waterusing a clean sponge or soft cloth. Allow this tostay on the surface to loosen the dirt, then wipewith a clean damp sponge or cloth. If all the dirtstains are not removed, repeat this procedureuntil the upholstery is clean. Do not use gaso-line, solvent, paint thinner or other strong clean-ers.

E040B01A-AAT

To Clean the Leather Upholstery(If Installed)In the normal course of use, leather upholsteredsurfaces will, like any material, pick-up dust anddirt. This dust and dirt must be cleanedoff or it may work into the surface of the leather, causing damage.

Fine leather needs care, and should be cleanedwhen necessary. Washing leather thoroughlywith soap and water will keep your leatherlustrous, beautiful and ensure you have manyyears of wear.

4-3

Page 97: Hyundai Accent

CORROSION PREVENTION AND APPEARANCE CARE

Take a piece of cheese cloth and using anymild soap and lukewarm water, work up a goodlather. Thoroughly wash the leather. Wipe cleanwith a slightly damp cloth and dry with softcloth. Do this as often as the leather becomessolled.

During tanning operations, sufficient oils areincorporated through processing that noneneedbe applied during the life of the leather. Ollapplled to the finlshed surface will in no wayhelp the leather and may do more harm thangood. Vamishes and fumiture pollshes shouldnever be used under any conditions.

E040C01A-AAT

Cleaning the CarpetsUse a foam-type carpet cleaner. Cleaners ofthis type are available in aerosol cans in liquidfomn or powder. Read the instructions and fol-low them exactly. Using a vacuum cleaner withthe appropriate attachment, remove as muchdirt from the carpets as possible. Apply thefoam following the manufacturer's directions, then rub in overlapping circles. Do not addwater. These cleaners work best when thecarpet is kept as dry as possible.

E040O01AAAT

Cleaning the Seat BeltsTo clean the seat belts, use a cloth or spongewith mild soap or detergent and warm water. Donot use strong detergents, dye, bleach orabra-sive materials on the seat belts as this mayweaken the fabric. While Cleaning the belts, inspect them for ex-cessive wear, cuts, fraying or other signs ofdamage and replace them if necessary.

E040E01A-AAT

Cleaning the WindowsYou may use any household window cleaner onthe windows. However, when cleaning the in-side of the rear window be careful not to dam-age the rear window defroster wiring.

1. Remove the oil filler cap by tuming it counter-clockwise.

2. Add oil, then check the level again. Oo notoverfill.

3. Replace the cap by tuming it clockwise.

The distance between the "F" and V marks isequal to about 1 liter of oil.

G360A01A-GAT

ENGINE OIL CONSUMPTIONFunction of Engine OilEngine oil has the primary function of lubricat-ing and cooling the inside of the engine.

Engine oil consumptionIt is normal that an engine should consumesome engine oil while normal driving. The causeof oil consumption in a normal engine are asfollows;

o Engine oil is used to lubricate pistons, pistonrings and cylinders.

o A thin film of oil is left on the cylinder wallwhen a piston moves downwards in thecylinder. High negative pressure generatedduring engine operation sucks some of theoil into the combustion chamber. This oil with some oil of the cylinder wall isbumed by the high temperature combustiongases during the combustion process.

o The engine oil consumption is strongly ef-fected by the viscosity and quality of oil, engine rpm and driving condition etc. Theengine oil is more consumed under severedriving conditions such as high speeds andf requent acceleration and deceleration thannormal driving condition.

CHECKING AND REPLACINGFUSESReplacing a Fusible Link

A fusible link will melt if the electrical circuitsfrom the battery are ever overtoaded, thus pre-venting damage to the entire wiring hamess.(This could be caused by a short in the systemdrawing too much current.) If this ever happens, have a Hyundai dealer determine the cause, repair the system and replace the fusible link. The fusible links are located in a relay box foreasy inspection.

CAUTION:When replacing a fusible link, never useanything but a new fusible link with thesame or lower amperage rating. Never use apiece of wire or a higher-rated fusible link. This could result in serlous damage andcreate a fire hazard.

G200601A-AAT

Replacing Accessory Fuse

The fuse box for the lights and other electricalaccessories will be found low on the dashboardon the driver's side. Inside the box you will finda list showing the circuits protected by eachfuse. If any of your car's lights or other electricalaccessories stop working, a blown fuse couldbe the reason. If the fuse has bumed out, youwill see that the metal strip inside the fuse hasbumed through. If you suspect a blown fuse, followthis procedure:

1. Tum off the ignition and all other switches.2. Open the fuse box and examine each fuse.

Remove each fuse by pulling it toward you(a small "fuse puller" tool is contained in thefuse box to simplify this operation).

3. Be sure to check all other fuses even if youfind one that appears to have bumed out.

6-15

Page 120: Hyundai Accent

4. Replace the blown fuse by pressing a newfuse of the same rating into place. The fuseshould be a snug fit. If it is not, have the fuseclip repaired or replaced by a Hyundai deal-er. If you do not have a spare fuse, you maybe able to borrow a fuse of the same orlower rating from an accessory you cantemporarily get along without (the radio orcigarette lighter, for example). Always re-member to replace the borrowed fuse.

CAUTION:A burned-out fuse indicates that there is aproblem in the electrical circuit. If you re-place a fuse and it blows as soon as theaccessory is turned on, the problem Is serl-ous and should be referred to a Hyundaidealer for diagnosls and repair. Never re-place a fuse wlth anythlng except a fusewlth the same or a lower amperage ratlng. Ahlgher capaclty fuse could cause damageand create a f Ire hazard.

EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM

ZHOOOA1-A

7. EMISSION CON-TROL SYSTEM

H010A01A-GAT

EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM(If Installed)Your Hyundai is equipped with an emissioncontrol system to meet all requirements of theEmission prohibition rules of your province,There are three emission control systems whichare as follows.

1) Crankcase emission control system2) Evaporative emission control system3) Exhaust emission control system

In order to assure the proper function of theemission control systems, it is recommendedthat you have your car inspected and main-tained by an authorized Hyundai dealer in ac-cordance with the maintenance schedule in thismanual.

H010B01A-AAT

1. CRANKCASE EMISSION CONTROLSYSTEM

The positive crankcase ventilation system isemployed to prevent air pollution caused byblow-by gases being emitted from the crank-case. This system supplies fresh air to the

crankcase through the air cleaner. Inside thecrankcase, the fresh air mixes with blow-bygases, then passes through the PCV valve intothe induction system.

H010C02A-GAT

2. EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONCONTROL SYSTEM (If installed)

The Evaporative Emission Control System isdesigned to prevent fuel vapors from escapinginto the atmosphere.

CanisterWhile the engine is inoperative, fuel vaporsgenerated inside the fuel tank are absorbed andstored in the canister. When the engine isrunning, the fuel vapors absorbed in the canis-ter are drawn into the induction system throughthe purge control solenoid valve.

Purge Control Solenoid ValveThe purge control solenoid valve is controlledby the ECM; when the engine coolant temper-ature is low, and during idling, it closes, so thatevaporated fuel is not taken into the surge tank. After engine warm-up, during ordinary driving, itopens so as to introduce evaporated fuel to thesurge tank.

H010O01A-AAT

3. Exhaust Emission Control SystemThe exhaust emission control system is a high-ly effective system which controls exhaust emis-sion while maintaining good vehicle perfor-mance.

H020A01A-GAT

CATALYTIC CONVERTER (If Installed)

Catalytic Converter

The catalytic converter is part of the exhaustemission control system. Its purpose is to re-move certain engine emission products fromthe engine's exhaust. It looks something like amuffler and is located undemeath the car in theexhaust system.

Page 126: Hyundai Accent

EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM

H020B01A-GAT

About the Catalytic ConverterExhaust gases passing through the catalyticconverter cause it to operate at very high tem-peratures. As a result, the introduction of largeamounts of unburned gasoline may cause it tooverheat and create a fire hazard. This can be avoided by observhig the foltowing:

o Use unleaded fuel only.o Maintain your engine in good condition. Ex-

tremely high converter temperatures canresult f rom improper operation of the electri-cal, ignition or fuel injection systems.

o If your engine stalls, pings, knocks, or ishard to start, take your car to your Hyundaidealer as soon as possible and have thedifficulty corrected.

o Avoid driving with a very low fuel level. If yourun out of gasoline, it could cause the engineto misfire and result in excessive loading ofthe catalytic converter.

o Avoid idling the engine for periods longerthanlOminutes.

o Your Hyundai should not be either pushedor pulled to get it started. This can cause the catalytic converter tooverioad.

o Take care not to stop your Hyundai over anycombustible material such as grass, paper, leaves or rags. As these materials couldcome in contact with the catalytic converterand could cause a fire.

Do not touch the catalytic converter or anyother part of the exhaust system while theengine is running as it is very hot and couldresult in bums.Remember that your Hyundai dealer is yourbest source of assistance.

RECOMMENDED INFLATIONPRESSURES

—rThe tire label located in the glove box gives thetire pressures recommended for your car. Thesepressures were chosen to provide the mostsatisfactory combination of ride comfort, tirewear and stability under normal conditions.Tire pressures should be checked at leastmonthly. Proper tire inflation pressures shouldbe maintained for these reasons:

o Lower-than-recommended tire pressurescause uneven tread wear and poor han-dling.

o Higher-than-recommended tire pressures in-crease the chance of damage from impactsand cause uneven tread wear.

8-1

Page 128: Hyundai Accent

CONSUMER INFORMATION

CAUTION:Always observe the following:

o Check pressures when the tires are cold. That is, after the car has been parked f orat least three hours and hasn't beendrlven more than one mile or 1.6 kmsince starting up.

o Check the pressure of your spare tireeach time you check the pressure ofother tires.

o Never overload your car. Be especiallycareful about overloading if you equipyour car with a luggage rack or car topcarrier.

I040A01A-QAT

SNOW TIRESIf you equip your car with snow tires, theyshould be the same size and have the sameload capacity as the original tires. Snow tiresshould be installed on all four wheels; other-wise, poor handling may result.Snow tires should carry 4 psi (28 kPa) more airpressure than the pressure recommended forthe standard tires on the tire label on the glovebox, or up to the maximum pressure shown onthe tire sidewall whichever is less.Oo not drive faster than the speed limit whenyour car is equipped with snow tires.

8-2

I050A02A-QAT

TIRE CHAINSTire chains should be installed on the frontwheels. Be sure that the chains are the properspace and that they are installed in accordancewith the manufacturer's instructions.

To minimize tire and chain wear, do not con-tinue to use tire chains when they are no longerneeded.

WARNING:When driving on roads covered with snowor ice, drive at less than 30 km/h (20 mph).

I060A01A-GAT

TIRE ROTATION

Tires should be rotated every 10,000 km (6,000miles). If you notice that tires are wearing un-evenly between rotations, have the car checkedby a Hyundai dealer so the cause may becorrected.

After rotating, adjust the tire pressures and besure to check wheel nut tightness.

WARNING:Do not mix bias-ply and radial-ply under anycircumstances. This may cause dangerous handling char-acteristics.

TIRE BALANCINGA tire that is out of balance may affect handlingand tire wear. The tires on your Hyundai werebalanced before the car was delivered but mayneed balancing again during the years you ownthe car.Whenever a tire is dismounted for repair, itshould be rebalanced before being reinstalledon the car.

I080A01A-AAT

TIRE TRACTIONTire traction can be reduced if you drive onworn tires, tires that are improperiy inflated oron slippery road surfaces. Tires should be re-placed when tread wear indicators appear. Toreduce the possibility of losing control, slowdown whenever there is rain, snow or ice on theroad.

WHEN TO REPLACE TIRES

1.6mm (0.06 in.)

WARNING:o Driving on worn-out tires is dangerous!

Worn-out tires can cause loss of braklngeffectiveness, steering control and trac-tion. When replacing tires, never mlx ra-dial and bias-ply tires on the same car. Ifyou replace radial ttres with blas-ply tires, they must be installed in sets of four.

o Using tires and wheels of other than therecommended sizes may cause unusualhandling characteristics that may causedeath, serious injury or property dam-age.

The original tires on your car have tread wearindicators. The tread wear indicators appearwhen the tread depth is 1.6 mm (0.06 in.). Thetire should be replaced when these appear as a

solid bar across two or more grooves of thetread. Always replace your tires with those ofthe recommended size. If you change wheels, the new wheel's rim width and offset must meetHyundai specification.
