NABL Aspects

The concept of laboratory accreditation was developed to provide a means for third party

Certification of the technical and general competence of the laboratory. It is the formal

recognition of competence of the laboratory by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and

Calibration Laboratories (NABL). NABL is an autonomous body under the aegis of Department of

Science and Technology, Govt. of India. Government of India has authorized NABL as a sole

accreditation body for testing laboratories. NABL provides laboratory accreditation services to

the laboratories that are performing the tests in accordance with NABL criteria based on

internationally accepted standards for laboratory accreditation ISO/IEC 17025: 2005.

Why use an accredited laboratory?

Laboratory accreditation provides formal recognition of technical competence of the laboratory,

thus providing a ready means for the customers to find reliable testing services in order to meet

their testing requirements. Laboratory accreditation enhances the customer confidence in

accepting the test results.

NABL certification is different from the ISO certification. ISO certification is on quality

management system only, where the NABL accreditation gives formal recognition to technical as

well as quality system and the required competence. NABL accreditation is an elevated level

activity than the system certification. Although ISO certification will give you the confidence of

the laboratory’s quality system, it tells nothing about the technical competence or its ability to

generate reliable and accurate test results that will be accepted by the customer. Proper

technical evolution requires the use of technical experts who can assess the laboratory against

the internationally accepted criteria. These criteria are embraced globally in a document called

ISO/IEC 17025: 2005.

CONCRETE MIX DESIGN

Concrete mix design is the science of deciding relative proportions of ingredients of concrete, to

achieve the desired properties in the most economical way.

Concrete is an extremely versatile building material because, it can be designed for strength

ranging from M10 (10MPa) to M100 (100 MPa) and workability ranging from 0 slump to 150mm

slump. In all these cases the basic ingredients of concrete are the same, but it is their relative

proportioning that makes the difference.

Basic Ingredients of Concrete: -

1. Cement – It is the basic binding material in concrete.

2. Water – It hydrates cement and also makes concrete workable.

3. Coarse Aggregate – It is the basic building component of concrete.

4. Fine Aggregate – Along with cement paste it forms mortar grout and fills the voids in the

Coarse aggregates.

5. Admixtures – They enhance certain properties of concrete e.g. gain of strength,

workability, Setting Characteristics, imperviousness etc.

STEEL- PHYSICAL TESTING

Steel Physical Testing is done to check mechanical properties indicates the quality of steel to be

used in buildings. The sample must meet the requirements as stated in the respective IS clauses.

Following are the tests done in our laboratory.

• Tensile Strength & Percentage Elongation

• Weight per Meter

• 90 degree/180-degree Bend Test

• 135 degree/157.5 degree Re-bend Test

• Splice Bar/Coupler

CEMENT TESTING

Unsound cement indicates overall inferior and lack of dimensional stability. Cement testing is

carried out to check the quality, grade of cement, and its dimensional stability. Testing is quick

indicator of quality of cement (for identification). This test is also done to classify the cement in

to grades for mix design.

Test done in our laboratory are as under:

• Standard Consistency

• Fineness by Dry Sieving

• Fineness by Blain’s Air permeability

• Soundness by Le Chatelier’s Apparatus

• Soundness by Autoclave

• Initial and Final setting time

• Density or specific gravity

• Compressive Strength (3 cubes each) 3, 7 & 28 days

8 | P a g e

CONCRETE TESTING

Concrete cube testing is recommended for ascertaining the quality of concrete and its

compressive strength.

Test done in our laboratory are as under:

• Compressive Strength

• Dimensions and dry density

• Water permeability

CONCRETE DURABILITY TESTING

Durability test of concrete is done to determine the resistance to physical or chemical

deterioration of concrete resulting from interaction with environment (physical deterioration) or

interaction between constituents (chemical deterioration) of concrete. A durable concrete

ensures corrosion resistance of embedded steel which in turn ensures a better longevity of the

structure as a whole. Concrete in structures in the coastal areas are the most susceptible to

chemical deterioration as sea water, with high concentration of chloride ions, has quite a

detrimental effect on durability of concrete. In these cases, the lower the chloride permeability,

the better the durability of concrete.

Types of test done to know the durability of concrete are-

• Rapid Chloride Penetration Test (RCPT).

• Water Permeability of Concrete (WP).

• Initial Surface Absorption Test (ISAT).

• Water Absorption (WA).

BRICK TEST (Burnt Clay and Fly Ash)

Low strength results in wastage during handling, affects load carrying capacity of bricks which

leads to lime patches on walls after painting, affects aesthetics. Brick test is done to check the

dimensional quality of the bricks and also indicates quality of concrete used in it. Test done in

our laboratory are as under:

• Water absorption

• Compressive strength testing

• Efflorescence test

• Dimension analysis

• Density test

GYPSUM TESTING

Gypsum test helps in indicating workability and hardness of gypsum plaster and to check the

overall quality of the gypsum being used.

Tests performed in our laboratory are as under:

• Consistency

• Setting time

9 | P a g e

• Compressive Strength (5 cubes each - for 1 and 7 days)

• Loose bulk density

• Transverse test (Flexural Test)

• Dry Sieving for particle size

• Pullout Testing

TILE TESTING

This testing is done to check the quality of tiles and resistance. As irregular and non-uniform

dimensions affect aesthetic view, high value indicates poor quality control during manufacturing

of tiles.

Tests performed in laboratory are as under:

• Dimension Analysis

• Water Absorption

• Modulus of Rupture

• Crazing Resistance

• Scratch Hardness

• Linear Thermal Expansion

• Resistance to Thermal Shock

• Wet Transverse Test

• Surface Flatness & Surface quality

NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING (NDT)

Non-Destructive Test is done for ascertaining quality of concrete which can be assessed in terms

of uniformity and integrity by UPV and Rebound hammer tests. In situ strength of concrete can

also be predicted by using advanced statistical models.

Test done in our laboratory are as under:

• Ultrasonic Concrete Testing

• Mechanical Sclerometer Test (N Type Proceq rebound Hammer)

• Half Cell Potentiometer Test

• Carbonation Test

CONCRETE CORE TESTING

Core tests are recommended for acceptance of work in event of failure of cube strength. Tests

performed in laboratory are as under.

• Locating Steel bars in RCC

• Core cutting at safe location without affecting steel bars

• Compressive Strength

JACKETING AND REPAIRS FOR RETROFITTING OF STRUCTURAL MEMBERS

Retrofitting is basically restoration of structure with objective of extending the life of Structure

and also to restrict further deterioration. In retrofitting ‘jacket’ is most common uses technique.

Types of jacketing techniques we conduct are as follows: -

• Concrete Reinforcement Jacketing.

• Carbon Fiber Reinforcement Polymer Jacketing.

• Steel Reinforcement Jacketing.

• Corrosion repairs of Reinforcement of steel or Structure Steel.
