Adobe’s Creative Cloud solution was launched last month in India. We spoke with Craig Tegel (President, Adobe Japan & Asia Pacific) and Umang Bedi (Managing Director-South Asia, Adobe) to find out why its price matches the value it delivers...

— Srinivasan Vishwanathan

Q: How does the Cloud play a part in Adobe’s “Creative Cloud” suite?Tegel: The programs will not be hosted in the cloud, but you will be downloading the apps from the cloud to the desktop. There are 3 main ways in which the cloud comes into play. Firstly, the cloud is used as the mechanism to get access to every new feature and func on that is developed for the crea ve cloud. Once or twice a month, the so ware automa cally checks for updates, and either the apps can be allowed to automa cally update themselves or can be manually updated. Secondly, having cloud storage means that users never have to worry about losing their files or space to store the media-heavy files, as it will be automa cally uploaded to Adobe’s servers. Thirdly, the cloud provides the Adobe community and technical service that you can share any of your crea ve material with, and no other product will offer such an involved community.

Q: How secure is the sharing of content from Creative Cloud?Bedi: When you look at Internet banking in India 5 years ago, it was pre y much non-existent. However, now

using OTP and HTTPS encryp on, transac ons are being done securely. We believe our data is offering security equal to those used by the department of defence, as no-one has been able to crack 256-bit encryp on un l now. Firstly, all of the data being shared from the cloud is transmi ed using 256-bit HTTPS protocol. Addi onally, the actual data is also encrypted with a 256-bit key at rest. The moment you stored any Adobe files in the cloud, you can use Crea ve Cloud (CC) Team to collaborate, by making comments on the file, giving feedback, and even downloading and altering it. The CC Team also uses versioning, so even if a collaborator downloads, recreates the design and uploads it to the cloud, the originator will have to accept the changes to overwrite the original file. The system maintains versions of the file so rollback can be performed. This is an important security feature that cannot be overlooked.

Q: What are the key differences between CC for teams and CC for individuals?Tegel: If a large design agency is working on a project, they will have different personnel who are responsible

With the phenomenon of “Internet Of Everything” gaining prominence, more and more devices have been infused with artificial intelligence to provide the “smart” experience. We look at 5 smart devices that will revolutionize 2013....

— Srinivasan Viswanathan

5 Smart DevicesTo Watch Out For In 2013

1) Google Glass“Wearable Compu ng” is the next wave of technology that will come to the fore in 2013, and Google’s Project Glass will lead the way. It is basically a pair of spectacles that will have a “head-mounted display”, which can display informa on like a smartphone hands-free. The Glass will have a 5MP camera that will be capable of taking 720P HD video. According to the tech specs, the display will be the equivalent of a “ 25 inch high defini on screen from eight feet away.” The glass will be able to u lize exis ng Google services such as Maps, Google Now, Google+ and Gmail to display no fica ons and informa on in the user’s peripheral vision. If it is widely used, it may even make mounted GPS systems obsolete as drivers can just say “Ok, Glass, Give Direc ons to [place]” and will be able to follow direc ons through the wearable glasses itself! Google has picked 8,000 contestants from a contest to purchase the glasses at a price of $1500. Since it will be in the hands of end users by May, it will be interes ng to observe the prac cal applica ons it has.

2) Smart WatchesJust one device cannot be pinpointed, as news is coming thick and fast that Microso , Google and Apple are planning to release some kind of smartwatch device. The latest rumor mill says that Microso has been in touch with manufacturers in Asia to order ny “watch-sized” displays. Apple supposedly has more than 75 patents in “wearable compu ng” technology, and could make a device with ght blue-tooth integra on with the iPhone/iPad. However, a smartwatch is not necessarily revolu onary, as Sony has already released a SmartWatch that can provide discreet no fica ons of incoming calls, messages, emails and social networking informa on. The Sony product can be ed with

any Android device, but does not work with iOS. Moreover, it needs to be charged on a daily basis. It is highly likely that Apple’s version would have many of these same capabili es, perhaps even with a touch of “Siri” to add smart AI to the device.

3) Samsung’s T9000This smart refrigerator brings Android to the most commonly-used kitchen appliance, which has a 10 inch Wi-Fi enabled touchscreen with in-built apps such as Evernote (to capture notes such as items needed) and Epicurious (to search for recipes). While you could do the same on your smartphone, many consumers are craving the pervasive connec vity in their own home. Things like checking the weather, twee ng and facebooking can be done through the interface on the fridge itself.

The recent news that WhatsApp has over 200 million active monthly users just emphasizes the demand for immersive instant messengers in the mobile space. We have a look at the top 5 IMs on smartphones that are making waves...

— Srinivasan Viswanathan

5 Mobile IMs To KeepYou Connected On The Go!

1) WeChatAvailable On: iOS,Android, Windows Phone, Blackberry, Symbian

Primarily a text and voice messaging service, WeChat is popular for its flexibility in sending messages through a variety of various mul media types. It facilitates

voice chat, where users “hold to talk” and record messages that they can send to the chat they are having. Social “moments” allows you to take pictures and

share them instantly with a friend. This is unique as the app allows for various levels of privacy, so a user could have their own small group chat and share

pictures among themselves. “Shake” is a feature that uses the loca on of the user to enable mee ng other WeChat users in the vicinity, who can

send “gree ngs” to each other to make new friends! Another similar feature is “Dri Bo le”, that allows a user to “throw” out a message

and meet new people who reply to their messages. It is currently being promoted in India through Ibibo.com, and has 300 million

users as of January 2013.

2) WhatsAppAvailable On: iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, Symbian, Windows Phone, Nokia S40This IM service is making waves, with its CEO recently announcing that it has well over 200 million users on a monthly basis. The app uses the open standard XMPP protocol, and u lizes one’s phone number as a unique iden fier. Similarly to WeChat, WhatsApp allows for text, video and audio messages to be sent to contacts. Unfortunately, conversa on history and se ngs are not stored on the cloud, but on the local storage of the smartphone, and hence users have to manually transfer data if they switch to a new device. While WeChat depends on Facebook Connect or Tencent registra on, WhatsApp relies on using the registered phone number to ac vate the profile on a phone. WhatsApp also provides group chat, where private conversa ons with a group can be held. An advantage with WhatsApp is the lack of ads, and the company’s strong stance against using adver sing in the app to make revenue. While the app is free on on most of the pla orms, an annual $0.99 subscrip on plan will be phased in, and is already present on the iOS pla orm.
