Dresden
Burning
27 people were arrested in Dresden village near Burgersfort next
to the Ohrigstad road earlier this week when trouble broke out
between residents and the Police.
Apparently the trouble started on Monday when a man started
erecting a shack without the consent of the traditional leader in
the a rea, who some residents sa y, is anyway self-styled. Later in
the evening r esidents s ay th ey saw people spilling a can of diesel,
presum able obtain ed from the communitys water pu mp, ourund
the ma ns new corru gated iron house and set ting the diesel alight.
According to residents the diesel started burning, and while
people sta rted t o quench the flames, resident s called the Police atabout 21:00. Bu t, appar ently they did not respond to the call out.
According to residents t hey only respinded about th ree hours
later, did nothing left again and return ed a few hours after that
with a large nu mber of vehicles. Residents sa y the Police, through
their action ma de it clear t hat they are n ot interested in serving
the community and star ted barring access roads to Dresden, this
time to keep t he Police out.
A crowd gathered who became very agitaed an a skirmish with
the Police broke out. According t o reports some Policemen were
injured and th e 27 people were taken int o custody. When
Platinum Gazette visited the area on Tuesday morning, tyres were
still burning and rocks prevented acces, while the road through
the dry river bed, leading towards the burned shack, was
completely inaccessable. The atmospher e was tense, but quiet. A
few Police vehicles were gath ered at the en tra nce to the village
(top photograph), while the Fire Brigade quenched the burning
tyres next to the main road to Prakt iseer.
Later tha t afternoon, the newspaper again visited the area.
Most of the tyres stopped burning at th at sta ge and the burn t
dwelling was visited. Not damage wa s done as t he diesel fire could
be quenched before it sta rted t o burn in full force. The wifes,
relatives and girlfriends of those arrested were gathered under a
tree next t o the prima ry school (bottom photograph) where th ey
made plans for transport to visit their friends and family and to
travel to Burgersfort for their court appearance.
However, those arrested were later released and war ned to
appear in court yesterday morning. They were charged with public
violence and the case was rema nded to a later date.

Case withdrawn
We are glad that the case against u s has been withdrawn, but we still do not ha ve
services in our villages.
That was the comment of a number of members of the Greater Tubatse Activists
Forum when t hey heard in t he Magistrates Court in Burgersfort on Wednesday that
charges of intimidation against them has been withdrawn. The case stems from a the
individuals alleged conduct when they disputed th e fact tha t the Great er Tubat se
Municipal Manager refused permission for a march they planned against servicedelivery.
They allegedly threatened people, were disorderly and intimidated personnel in the
mun icipal building in Burgersfort. When th ey appeared in court on char ges of
intimidation on Wednesday, the st ate prosecutor told the court that charges against
them have been withdr awn. No official reasons were given. The whole issue of the case
against them is also interlinked with their dissatisfaction about service delivery, an
interdict against them organising and marching in Burgersfort, as well as court action
by them setting aside the indertict after they marched illegally.
The group say they are still not satisfied and that they still plan protest action for
the futu re, because the plight of people in their villages has not impr oved.
The road to MasevenUnseen by the passers-by on th e main r oads passing , Ga-Malekane, Ngwaabe an d the
traffic to Jane Fu rse, a n ew tarred road is u nder construction between Ngwaabe and
Maseven.
The exact route of the road run s basically from the t he J ane F urse r oad (a couple of
kilometres after crossing the steel bridge from the R555) parr allel with t he R555 until it
will join th e R555 just a fter the bridge over the Steelpoort River when you travel from
Steelpoort.
The road, wh en completed, will not only improve access to t he villiages on the r oute,
but it will also leaasen congestion of the one lane steel bridge.
What is important, the Greater Tu batse Business Forum (GTBF) says, is that the
contr actor building the r oad MPRN Constr uction, is sub-contra cting to local small
businesses from sur rounding villages, and should be commen ded for their commun ityinvolvement. Cha irman of the Foru m, Mr Steve Mokota, says some of these s mall
businesses are members of the forum and they mainly supply labour for the stone
pitching at the new road. Mr Mokota says the success of the venture can be attributed to
the contra ctors egagement with a Community Liaiss on Officer elected by member s of the
community themselves.
He says structures in t he community is very important and th at th ey as the GTBF is
is more than comfortable in working with community structures such as ward committees
and councillors. He, however, said the role of the t riditional leadership sh ould be more
clearly defined with regard development and business development in rural areas, as it is
the GTBFs experience that traditional leaders tend interfere where they have no
mandate, sometimes ham pering development in their ar eas.
