Stephen’s Ministry Proposal

Problem: The extent of Pastor Lee and Pastor Ryan’s care is limited. We are now a church with well over 2500 members. Even if we focused our time solely on care there would not be enough time to reach the people we can. The people who need focused care are; grieving families, members who are sick, hospital care, divorce, etc. More than 25 hours a week is spent by Pastor Ryan, at this time, on those members. However, even within those 25 hours many people can still be neglected. The main reason is people do not reach out to Pastor Lee and Pastor Ryan due to worries about them not having enough time or even being able to provide proper care.

At least in the near future there is no path to hiring a new pastor. On top of that the cost of a new pastor would be well over what our current budget could allow. Because, of this we need a new way to help broaden the scope of Pastoral Care at Our Savior Lutheran Church.

While many people will still want to see Pastor Ryan or Pastor Lee this will help us care for even more people at Our Savior Lutheran Church.

Solution: Stephen’s Ministry is a program to train lay members (congregational members) to help in the care for those in our church that are in need. Stephen Ministers are laypeople—Christian men and women—trained to provide one-to-one care to people experiencing a difficult time in life, such as grief, divorce, job loss, chronic or terminal illness, relocation, or separation due to military deployment.

Stephen Ministers come from all walks of life. Their commonality? A passion for bringing Christ’s love and care to people during a time of need.

Process: Stephen Ministers are trained via a Stephen ministry team leader who identifies people who can help in this care.

They are then trained over a period of 50 hours by the leader through continuing education to help those in need. They meet twice a month every month for the time of their service. While this might add more work to Pastor Ryan’s plate it is well worth it to help those in need.

Witness: Our Savior Lutheran Church has been a bold witness of care within our community. How much more might we be able to do with 10 focused people working on care. People who are cared for tell others where they can receive it if they have been neglected. This will help us witness to the larger community of Northeast Nebraska.

Cost: Startup cost is steep the one-time lifetime enrollment fee for our church is 1,675 dollars. The training for this would be anywhere between 1100-1500 dollars. Meaning it would be 3175 dollars to help expand the pastoral care at Our Savior. However, that is a fraction of the cost of that of a new pastor.

Proposal: Send Pastor Ryan to Stephen Ministry Leadership training this summer. This training will help him develop Stephen Ministers within Our Savior Lutheran Church. These men and women will help broaden the scope of care the pastoral staff can achieve. This is no way means that after this training is done Pastor Ryan would work less on care. It would only mean an expanded reach of the church to those who are broken and hurting.
