New Zealand Certificates in English Language (NZCEL)
Successful completion of NZCEL levels 3, 4 and 5 offers you an academic pathway to further study at EIT. You will also receive a nationally recognised certificate.
The New Zealand Certificates in English Language (NZCEL) programmes are designed to help students “Live the Language.” You will learn practical and academic English skills, how to communicate with people in a variety of familiar and unfamiliar contexts, work to widen vocabulary knowledge and gain confidence in using English whatever your level.
English Language Training Schemes (General English)
The English Language Training Schemes offer a flexible option for students who wish to study English but do not require a qualification. General English courses can be used for personal development; for example, to help you communicate better while you live in New Zealand or to help you get a better job. Students who choose to study General English can be at any level and will learn alongside NZCEL students.
IELTS Preparation Classes
IELTS Preparation Classes can be studied at the same time as the NZCEL Level 3 and Level 4 programmes. IELTS preparation classes are designed to improve students’ test-taking strategies, to familiarise students with the IELTS test format, and to improve their English level prior to taking the test.
EIT Napier is an accredited IELTS Examination Centre and offers IELTS examinations on campus throughout the year.
English Plus Cookery
During this programme you will prepare for cookery studies through a blend of general and cookery English. You will improve your confidence in living in an English-speaking environment, and learn the language and skills you need for your hospitality studies and your career as a chef. (Please note: Classes are subject to minimum numbers.)
Minimum entry for this course is an IELTS score of 4.0 in all bands.

NEW ZEALAND CERTIFICATE IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE (NZCEL) & ENGLISH LANGUAGE TRAINING
The EIT English Language Proficiency Test is an assessment that can be used as an alternative to IELTS for admissions purposes into an EIT academic programme. Students who have not met our English language entry requirements (IELTS, PTE or other recognised test) may take the ELPT as an alternative to meet the requirements. Students in this position are either contacted by EIT directly during the applications process or may contact EIT for information about taking the test and their eligibility to do so.
NEW ZEALAND CERTIFICATE IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE (NZCEL):
EIT’s English Language Centre has established a reputation for excellence for teaching international students and new immigrants. EIT offers a range of programmes to meet your needs for general language development and for preparing you for further study.
Study may be class based, in the language lab and also offsite visits giving you the opportunity to “live the language”. Subject areas:

ASSESSMENTSAssessments vary for each course, but include assignments, practical and written assessments, role-plays, verbal presentations. Assessment assistance is available through the EIT Learning Hub for everyone to prepare and perform well.
Some courses include assessment against National Qualifications Framework unit standards.
ENTRY POINTStudents will take an online test before starting the programme to determine English level and entry point.
On arrival, students will have an oral and written assessment to confirm their level of English in order for them to be placed in an appropriate class.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE TRAINING SCHEMES: For students who wish to study English but do not require a qualification and wish to study for different time periods to NZCEL. Students will be studying alongside NZCEL students. Course content is the same as NZCEL.

IELTS PREPARATION PROGRAMME (PART-TIME): IELTS preparation classes are designed to improve students’ test taking strategies, to familiarise students with the IELTS test format and to improve their English level prior to taking the test. Students can join the IELTS programme as part of full time study or study part time. Out of class study is strongly encouraged, to include practice in Tasks One and Two of the Writing Module as well as reading and listening tests.
Near their exam date, each candidate is given a practice speaking test.
As EIT is a registered British Council IELTS Centre, students can sit the IELTS test at EIT. Subject Areas:
