PROGRAMME STRUCTURE & WORKLOADThis programme is delivered full time over one year.

Students who enrol in this progamme of study ‘full-time’ will have timetabled classes in the workshop and/or classroom to carry out specialist automotive training as well as complete any formative and summative assessments.

FURTHER STUDY PATHWAYSGraduates of the New Zealand Certificate in Automotive Engineering (Level 3) will be eligible to progress the pathway into the New Zealand Certificate in Automotive Engineering (Level 4), Light Vehicle or the New Zealand Certificate in Automotive Engineering (Level 4) Heavy Vehicle.

WHAT WILL YOU STUDY ?Get a head-start on your mechanical engineering apprenticeship with TPP’s New Zealand Certificate in Mechanical Engineering (Level 3). You’ll learn the foundation skills covered in the first year of a mechanical engineering apprenticeship, including machining operations, welding, CAD drawing and operations completed within an engineering workshop.

Graduates will be able to work in an area of specialisation of their choice (under supervision) having gained the knowledge and skill in health and safety, numeracy, communication and team work as well as general knowledge with engineering tools, machinery and equipment, as well as worksite processes and principles.

CORE ELEMENTSGraduates of this qualification will be able to:

• Work safely, applying an understanding of relevant Health and Safety requirements and safety culture, when carrying out engineering tasks

• Apply basic trade related numeracy, literacy and visualisation skills to perform engineering tasks

• Perform a defined range of engineering tasks according to instructions using relevant materials, tools and equipment

• Set up and carry out a single process engineering job according to instructions

• Apply an understanding of effective and efficient processes and principles to the engineering jobs being undertaken

• Take responsibility for the appropriate quality of own engineering work and make corrections as required

• Participate and communicate effectively within an engineering team

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE AND WORKLOADThis programme is delivered over one year with students undertaking both theory and practical activities. The programme course components reflect the Mechanical Engineering industry and use authentic practical learning and assessment methods to prepare students for a pre-trade qualification and/or employment.

The delivery methods integrate theory and practical instruction using a mix of face to face, time-tabled tutor-facilitated classroom and engineering workshop sessions as well as on-line teaching and learning interactions.

Over the duration of the programme, students are encouraged to become independent students and compile portfolios to evidence their learning progression and to scaffold on the tutor-directed activities. Evidence is captured through classroom activity participation, completion of tasks, some research, and reflection as well as via the student’s formative and summative assessments. The portfolio and project work are the major source of evidence for summative assessment purposes and tutor feedback is recorded.

FURTHER STUDY PATHS Graduates of the New Zealand Certificate in Mechanical Engineering (Level 3) will be eligible to progress and pathway into the New Zealand Certificate in Mechanical Engineering (Trade) (Level 4), New Zealand Certificate in Mechanical Building Services (Trade) (Level 4) or the New Zealand Certificate in Dairy Systems (Engineering) (Level 4).

It is also recognised by the New Zealand Master Builders’ Association.

Topics are based on unit standards for ease of study.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE AND WORKLOADThe programme is divided into nine courses which will even out the workload throughout the year.

The rationale used to structure the teaching and learning hours, workshop hours and supervised practice is based on students having more tutor directed learning at the start of the programme which will decrease as the programme progresses to more self directed learning.

Courses with a high technical content will have more tutor directed hours to reflect the complexities of the topic.

WHAT WILL YOU STUDY ?This part time, 12 - 18 month programme, contains five separate five-day block courses held at Shantytown, Greymouth. There is generally two to three months between each block course. You will gain 40 credits including 10 elective credits.This hands-on programme has been designed to prepare you with the skills to enter the heritage rail and steam industries. Graduates also have the potential to move into rail transport, steam plant or engineering. Topics based on unit standards are broken down into modules for easier understanding:

ASSESSMENTAssessment is at the completion of each block course with written assessments, by site based “workplace” verification and at the completion of training manual and final hands-on assessment.

LOCATIONThis programme is based at Shantytown, Greymouth. Transport is available each day to and from Shantytown. Students will meet each morning at the Greymouth campus.

• Applicants for whom English is a second language must meet IELTS (or equivalent) Level 5 with no band lower than 5.

CERTIFICATE IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERINGApplicants must meet the following criteria:• A minimum of 10 credits in literacy

and numeracy (algebra, trigonometry and measurement recommended) NCEA Level 1 or be able to demonstrate suitable knowledge, skills or work experience.

• Be physically capable of meeting the programmes requirements.

• Applicants for whom English is a second language must meet IELTS (or equivalent) Level 5 with no band lower than 5.

CONSTRUCTION• Ideally applicants will have a

minimum of three years secondary schooling and NCEA Level 2

• Literacy and numeracy at Level 2, although assistance will be given if required.

ENTRY CRITERIA

CERTIFICATE IN STEAM-POWERED VEHICLESApplicants must meet the following criteria:• Successfully achieved NCEA Level 1

(or equivalent).• Be 16 years of age or over.• Applicants for whom English is a

second language must meet IELTS (or equivalent) Level 5.5.

Special Notes:• Special entry may be granted where

evidence exists that the applicant can successfully complete the programme. Please contact the Polytechnic for details.

• Some courses within this programme require specific levels of physical ability.
