Sitting Meditation - Cultivating Mindfulness

To be friend with your breath.Feel the air moving in and out of your nose.Locate the most vivid sensations - moment by

moment.Rest in the awareness of breathing - outside of time.Don’t judge when your mind is wandering.Just note what is on your mind as bystander.Let the thought be part of your awareness in the

moment; no need to stop it.Sitting on the bank of the thought stream, listening

to the gurgling but not so caught up in the torrent.

Cultivating Mindfulness

Remember don’t fall into the thought stream and get caught up in the future (worrying, planning) and the past (remembering, blaming, pining) and in reactive and often painful emotions.

Just as if you are sitting on the bank of water stream with appreciation of your breathing and scenery.

Upon the moment of appreciation, you aware once again you’re listening and seeing the “dependent origination”.

Repeat this a million times. Peace is with you.

The effort is directed to letting go, to developing a

mind that inclines to abandoning….

Do not think about your work, your family, your

commitments, your history, …during meditation.

You become someone who has no history during

the time that you meditate.

When any thought hits the wall of the 'padded

cell', it does not bounce back again.

The reality of the “silent now” becomes

magnificent and awesome.

You achieved “mindfullness sustained only in the

present moment”.

Sustained Attention on the Present Moment

Silent Awareness of the Present Moment

1. Develop inner silence by giving up great burden of random thoughts.

2. Develop silent awareness by recognizing the space between thoughts and between periods of inner chatter.

3. Silence is so much more productive of wisdom and clarity than reactive thinking.

4. Abandon the inner speech and abide in silent awareness of the present moment long enough, you will realize how delightful it is.

5. You realize that most of our thinking is really pointless, that it gets you nowhere, only giving you many headaches and distresses.

6. You gladly and easily spend much time in inner quiet and peace.

Chapter ThreeGautama Buddha (2) –Final Words

All compounded things, all experiences (mental and physical), all phenomena by their very nature decay and die, and are disappointing: it is through being not-blind-drunk on, obsessed by, or infatuated with, the objects of the senses that you succeed in awakening, or obtain liberation.

Chapter ThreeGautama Buddha (2)

The Five Periods of Buddha Teaching by Tientai School ( 天臺宗 )

1. The Flower Garland period( 華嚴時 ), which only lasted a few weeks from the enlightenment of the Buddha. He taught the Flower Garland Sutra, speaking directly from his enlightenment, but people couldn't understand him, so he realized he had to apply skilful means in his teaching.

In the future, Maitreya Bodhisattva will be born on earth, teaching Dharma to the heaven and human beings including all followers of Shakyamuni Buddha.

He is not a Buddha yet. But he’s already a Bodhisattva Mahasattva of the highest level, who will be born just one more time to attain Buddhahood.

Maitreya is his surname. His first name is Ajita, meaning Unsurpassed or Unconquered.

His name Maitreya means Kindness. In one life, after he heard the Sutra of Kindness Samadhi from the

Ancient Maitreya Buddha he decided to cultivate the Bodhisattva path and become a Buddha himself.

He also said when he attained Buddhahood, the world would be peaceful and beautiful.

In another life, when he was young Upasaka Fu, he would release all the fish after he had caught them. Then in another life in the Liang Dynasty, at Feng Fa, he was the Cloth Bag Monk. When people asked him about Buddha’s teaching, he just let his bag fall onto the ground, picked it up and walked away. Here dropping the bag means “letting go”, forgive and forget. Picking up the bag and walked away means he would take the responsibility of propagating the Dharma.

He was one of The Buddha’s disciples. He died before The Buddha and was born in the inner court of the Tushita Heaven. He will be there for 4000 heaven years (57.6 billions years on earth) before descending to the earth. People now honor him as “The honorable Buddha Maitreya who will be born in the distant future”

He will attain Buddhahood under the Dragon Flower Tree. And there will be 3 Dragon Flowers Assemblies:

– In the First Assembly, he will cross over 9600 million people.

– In the Second Assembly, he will cross over 9400 million people.

– In the Third Assembly, he will cross over 9200 million people. He will live on earth for 84,000 years before entering nirvana. His Dharma will remain on earth for another 84,000years.

You can be born and receive Maitreya Bodhisattva’s teaching in the Inner Court of the Tushita Heaven if you follow the Pure Land Practice such as reciting Maitrey Bodhisattva’s name and upholding the precepts.

There are 3 sutras about Maitreya Bodhisattva:

– The Sutra Of Maitreya Bodhisattva Ascending Tushita Heaven

– The Sutra On The Descend Of Maitreya Buddha

– The Sutra Of Maitreya Bodhisattva’s Attainment of Buddhahood
