The Next Generation Jazz Orchestra is the most prestigious of the MJFeducational opportunities, and offers students the opportunity to play onthe Arena stage at the Monterey Jazz Festival and to tour internationallywith a group of the most outstanding student jazz musicians in the country.

The MJF in Noto started in 1989. For nearly three decades, the MontereyJazz Festival has been sending our best student jazz musicians to Japan toserve as cultural ambassadors, and to receive a cultural experience equal to

a study abroad program. In addition, students gain a realistic and insightfulunderstanding of what “being on the road” as a professional performingartists involves.

In addition to the MJF in Noto, our Next Generation Jazz Orchestra hasperformed in Amagasaki, Isesaki, Kanazawa, Kurashiki, at the Kutchan JazzFestival (on the island of Hokkaido), in Maebashi, Nagano, Nagoya,Okayama, Osaka, Saitama, Tateshina, Tokyo, Tomisato, Yokohama, and inmany other cities.

This year the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra will tour Japan from July24- August 8. MJF welcomes corporate partners who are looking for theopportunity to support the development of the next generation of jazzlegends and to share in the benefits of a distinctive and exemplaryinternational exchange.

Everyone says ‘music is the universallanguage,’ but I reallyknow this to be true.I met some of myclosest friends duringthose trips to Japan. The importance of aprogram like this goesfar beyond music and lands on humanityitself.”— AMBROSE AKINMUSIRE NGJO Alumnus, 1999, 2000
