About Dovecot

Dovecot Gallery is a landmark centre for contemporary art, craft and design built around a leading international Tapestry Studio. Dovecot Tapestry Studio would not be able to continue its commitment to creating new artworks for the future, and honouring the legacy of the founding Master Weavers, without the support of Dovecot Foundation. This charitable organisation is committed to the advancement of tapestry weaving, visual arts, craft and design through Dovecot Gallery’s cross discipline exhibition programme and Studio apprenticeships.

All proceeds from our exhibitions, café and venue hire are used to continue Dovecot’s century-long heritage of making and collaboration with leading contemporary artists. If you are interested in commissioning or purchasing a tapestry or rug, please email our Chief Operating Officer: [email protected]

5 What’s on at Dovecot July – December 2016

This multi-layered thematic exhibition curated by Bill Hare and Andrew Patrizio of The University of Edinburgh, produced in collaboration with Dovecot Gallery and with support from Creative Scotland and Dovecot Foundation, presents a comprehensive and complex approach to the challenging concerns which have obsessed many of the most important and innovative Scottish artists since the end of World War Two.

The Scottish Endarkenment engages with a wide and varied range of demanding topics from ever-escalating communal and international conflicts, social inequalities and consumer materialism to threatened gender identities, filial traumas and sexual prejudices. These issues are also related to the dialectical tensions which seethe within the Scottish psyche – moral struggles between good and evil, Self and the Other, Jekyll and Hyde. These different, but interrelated themes are imaginatively treated within a wide range of interpretative approaches and experimental practices – through painting to performance; from the overtly horrific to the darkly satirical. Amongst the forty plus exhibits are some rarely seen works by major Scottish artists such as Alan Davie, Joan Eardley, Eduardo Paolozzi, Ian Hamilton Finlay, Boyle Family, John Bellany, Joyce Cairns, Steven Campbell, Alison Watt, Douglas Gordon, Christine Borland, Kenny Hunter and David Shrigley. Along with these established figures there are also notable contributions by younger and emerging artists like Katie Paterson, Kevin Harman, Georgia Horgan and Jonathan Owen. Specially commissioned new works by Shona Macnaughton and the artistic duo Beagles & Ramsay also feature.

The rug Diagrams of Love: Marriage of Eyes created in collaboration with British artist Linder was commissioned with support from the Dovecot Foundation and Creative Scotland, for inclusion in the Hayward Touring British Art Show 8 which opened at Leeds City Art Gallery and tours Edinburgh, Norwich and Southampton. The Marriage of Eyes rug is also the ‘eighth dancer’ in a new ballet by Linder titled Children of the Mantic Stain, choreographed by Kenneth Tindall, music by Maxwell Sterling, performed by Northern Ballet and signature sportswear designed by Christopher Shannon.

The Children of the Mantic Stain ballet was performed on the Weaving Floor at Dovecot in March, for one night only in Scotland to a sell-out audience, and now continues its tour around the British Art Show 8 host cities as well as an additional appearance on Wednesday 10 August at the Southbank Centre in London.

The Marriage of Eyes rug was created at Dovecot Tapestry Studio by Master Weaver Jonathan Cleaver and tufters Dennis Reinmüller and Kristi Vana.

Dazzle Jewellery returns to Dovecot for the fifth time, in its thirty-third year as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Featured this year are designers new to Dazzle in Edinburgh including Karolina Baines, Lynne MacLachlan, Morna Darling and Stacey Bentley who all have connections with Scotland. One designer to watch is Dublin based trained musician Genevieve Howard. A statement neckpiece by her, in this selling jewellery exhibition at Dovecot, is inspired by the musical notation of the old Irish air, Song of the Chanter. The shapes are a graphical representation of the musical score and the piece is made of laser cut Japanese linen card.

Dazzle’s selection of some of Europe’s leading contemporary jewellers will be supplemented by an exhibition of photography exploring the city of Edinburgh by Lynn and Paul Henni and the sumptuous silk scarves of Ekta Kaul.

Curated by Amanda Game this exhibition explores the people, place and work of North Lands Creative Glass, creating a portrait of the organisation in its twentieth year. North Lands is based in Caithness on the North East Coast of Scotland, and is one of the world’s most prestigious centres for the study and development of glass as an artform, providing excellent facilities, opportunities and inspiration to artists working with glass from all over the world.

This exhibition delves into the North Lands archives and combines works from their study collection, then opens out to showcase major works by ten invited master glass makers: Maria Bang Espersen, Alison Kinnaird, Tobias Mohl, Magdalene Odundo, David Reekie, Colin Reid, Richard Slee, Petr Stanicky, Emma Woffenden and Udo Zembok.

The exhibition is part of a broader programme including a three day conference titled A Luddite Convention: Making, Technology and Nature at Edinburgh College of Art from 16 to 18 September. The conference aims to connect ideas formed during the industrial revolution, to the present technological time.

Conference speaker, award winning glass artist and Edinburgh College of Art lecturer Geoffrey Mann, will also unveil a site specific installation at Dovecot developed in collaboration with Susanna Beaumont.

North Lands Creative Glass: A Portrait at 20 is presented at Dovecot Gallery with support from Dovecot Foundation, Creative Scotland, Bullseye Glass, Turtleton Charitable Trust and Phebe Miller Olcay in memory of her husband John Olcay.

Exhibition highlighting the relationship between colour and light in recent Dovecot projects. From projection to pigment, there are a myriad of different ways that the weaver can use the subtle effects of light on colour to bring textile to life. The importance of light in successful colour blending is a vital element in the production of all the textile art produced at Dovecot Tapestry Studio; but with experience and skill the weaver can also make light the subject and focus for the work itself.

Exhibition open: Mon-Sat 10.30am-5.30pm

COLOUR AND LIGHT5 November - 28 January

Dovecot announces a new digital project in collaboration with the Institute of Informatics and Digital Innovation and the Disney Research Lab at Napier University. We aim to create a virtual weaving studio, using virtual reality headsets or tablet devices located in the building and on the Dovecot website.

The aim of this project is to deepen the understanding of Dovecot Tapestry Studio by allowing visitors to see further into the process of tapestry and rug making than ever before. This exploration makes connections between digital technology and the traditional skill of weaving, to create a new tool for you to explore the common threads that inform these processes.

>The official launch will be announced on Dovecot’s News page at www.dovecotstudios.com
