Dear Member, We have received many messages from members appreciating the improvements in the Dovecot. Thank you very much for these. Some of you wrote in to say that you had difficulty reading the President’s message in last month’s issue because of the small font used. I apologise for this and will ensure that this does not happen again. February was highlighted by the visit of the Secunderabad Club sports team & Committee members. We have published pictures of the various events held during their visit and I am happy to inform you that, this time around, Bangalore Club were the winners of all the trophies. The games were played in true sportsman- like spirit and were enjoyed by one and all. We had the Valentine’s Dance on the 12 th with Krosswindz, a band from Kolkatta, in attendance. The event was a success and was specially appreciated by our guests from Secunderabad. The HLM lunch on the 19 th saw a good turnout of our senior members and their spouses. While enjoying the fine lunch, specially prepared by our staff, they were able to catch up with fellow long-standing members. Members of our Club visited the Titan watch & jewellery factories on the 12 th . They were impressed with the world-class manufacturing facilities at both units. A visit to the Toyota car factory is being organized in March. The Book Exchange programme continued to draw a good response. The Ladies Evening on the 26 th had interesting programmes. Mark Rego conducted a quiz entitled “Booze & Brains” & Mrs. Marolla gave a demonstration on ‘line dancing’. This was followed by some lively music and dance. Besides the monthly cooking demonstration conducted by Mrs. Nimi Ravindranath, we had a special Japanese cooking demonstration. Both these were well attended. Transactions in the Club are much faster with these new cards. We have already e-mailed details of the vacation travel programmes, prepared exclusively for our Club members. Such of the members who have not registered their e-mail addresses with the Club for notifications on these matters may contact the Assistant Secretary for details. Dear Member,

We have received many messages from members appreciating the improvements in the Dovecot.

The games were played in true sportsman-like spirit and were enjoyed by one and all.

We had the Valentine’s Dance on the 12th with Krosswindz, a band from Kolkatta, in attendance. The event was a success and was specially appreciated by our guests from Secunderabad.

The HLM lunch on the 19th saw a good turnout of our senior members and their spouses. While enjoying the fine lunch, specially prepared by our staff, they were able to catch up with fellow long-standing members.

Members of our Club visited the Titan watch & jewellery factories on the 12th. They were impressed with the world-class manufacturing facilities at both units. A visit to the Toyota car factory is being organized in March.

The Book Exchange programme continued to draw a good response.

The Ladies Evening on the 26th had interesting programmes.

A recipe from one of these events is published in this issue.

The change over to the new contactless RFID cards from the 14th onwards was a smooth affair. Transactions in the Club are much faster with these new cards.

We have already e-mailed details of the vacation travel programmes, prepared exclusively for our Club members. Such of the members who have not registered their e-mail addresses with the Club for notifications on these matters may contact the Assistant Secretary for details.

I am sure a large number of our members will be buying new cars in March, especially to avail tax benefits. We are working with the major car manufacturers to get you special discounts, possible due to bulk buying. Can you please write in to the Secretary indicating the model of the car that you would be interested in buying so that we can consolidate all the orders and get you the best possible price?

Food Lovers (Tested Recipes) - Peppa Zzing Chicken Burger:

Ingredients:

500g Lean Chicken Mince100g Finely Chopped Onions2 Eggs1 tbsp Maida1 tsp Corn Flour1 tsp Red Chili Powder 1 tsp Garam Masala Powder ¼ tsp Pepper Powder2 tsps Salt1 tbsp Ginger-Garlic Paste Bread crumbs or Egg for binding.

Additional requirements:

Finely Chopped Iceberg Lettuce Lightly Fried Onions Mayonnaise English Mustard Mushrooms Lightly Sautéed Tomato Slices Processed Cheese Slices

Method:

Mix all ingredients together in a deep vessel till the mixture is firm enough to make into patties. If the mixture is too hard then break an egg into it and mix again. If it is too soft then add some Maida and mix again. Shape into patties. Heat a pan, add a spoon of vegetable oil and place the burger patty on top. Turn the patty from side to side till golden brown on both sides.

Remove from pan and do not press the patty with the cooking spoon as all the delicious juices will spill out. Cut the burger bun in half and lightly heat the bun on the inside surfaces. Liberally spread the mayonnaise mixed with the lightly fried onion on the lower half and plain mayonnaise on the top half. On the lower half of the bun, spread finely chopped iceberg lettuce and place the cooked patty on top.

Place a slice of processed cheese on the patty, a teaspoon of sautéed mushrooms and onions. Top it all with a spoon of English mustard and 2 slices of tomato. Cover this all with the top half of the burger bun.

Serve with French fries or crispy wafers.

Italian Shoes By Henning Mankell

This is a quietly beautiful book with rare insights into the psyche of the hero, a surgeon who runs away to hide on an ice-locked island. He is escaping from a nightmare mistake he made which results in the amputation of the patient’s wrong limb. He is so lost to the world that he cuts a hole in the ice every morning and lowers himself into it to feel alive.

The stasis he is in even allows for an anthill to grow in one of the rooms in his house. Then an unexpected visitor enters his life- his old love Harriet whom he has inexplicably abandoned almost 40 years ago. Through her last demand (she is doomed to die from cancer) that he fulfil an early promise to take her to a forest pool, he embarks on a remarkable journey of the soul, when he is forced to look at himself. It is a moving tale of loss and redemption, with unexpected discoveries, mysteries and a reawakening.

The language is bleak and beautiful, just like the Scandinavian landscapes that Mankell writes about in his Wallander mysteries. It is a heart-thawing tale told in a sombre, ruthlessly honest way.

Book Review - by Maya Jayapal...From the President’s Desk (Contd)

A wine boutique will be opened in the shopping area, shortly. A variety of wines, cheeses and wine accessories will be available. We are planning to have regular wine appreciation sessions & wine festivals, shortly.

Two major events to look forward to in March are the ever-popular programme of old Hindi songs, Bhuli Hui Yadeein, on the 19th and the inaugural edition of the Bangalore Club Golf Championship, arranged exclusively for Bangalore Club members.

The Bangalore Club Golf Championship will be played on the 10th & the 11th at the Bangalore Golf Club. The Golf event, initially planned for the 11th, with 100 players from Bangalore Club, had to be expanded as we received 100 registrations in the first two days itself! Registrations have since been closed as the maximum number of players we could accommodate has been reached. After the game, we are planning a gala prize distribution ceremony accompanied with a good entertainment programme, cocktails and dinner at the Bangalore Club on the 11th evening. This is open to all members and guests. Please register early to avoid disappointment.

We would be glad to have your feedback and suggestions in our continuing endeavour to make your experience at the Club an enjoyable one.

With warm regards,

Yours sincerely,

Amarnath Kamath

How Can I Move the Carbon Needle?

1. Change your light bulb – one a month – to CFL (compact fluorescent light bulbs). They provide the same lumens at 1/5th the wattage.

2. Do an energy audit in your home. Electricity, gas, water, air-conditioning. Start with switching off electrical equipment at the plug point when not in use.

3. Say no to plastic bags. Annually we use 500 billion bags of which only 3% are recycled. The rest land up in landfills and take a thousand years to biodegrade. Can you imagine that?

4. Turn off lights, computers, TV, anything that draws electricity.

5. Help end waste of paper. 900 million trees are cut down to make paper every year. Recycled paper uses 60% less energy that virgin paper. Each ton of recycled paper saves 4,400 kwh of energy, 30,000 liters of water and 19 trees. Each tree has the capacity to filter 27 kg of pollutants from the air.

6. Think about the outside packaging. Paper, plastics, printers, magazines. Retain and give it to the kabadiwala. It will get recycled.

7. Think before you drive. Take a friend along, load up, plan your trip to avoid wastage and repetition or walk.

8. Plant a tree. It can absorb about a ton of CO2 in its lifetime.

9. Consume less, share more, buy less, think more, and live simply.

10. Meditate. Borrow when you need. Lend when asked.

It is all your Actions that have high impact on the Planet. Act now & enjoy the high feel good factor.

The Witty and the Wise (A section of well known humorists)

Mark TwainHe sifted through the American landscape and handed us back verbal nuggets of pure gold. Samuel Clemens spent his early teen years in Hannibal, Missouri, operating a country newspaper with two brothers. He yearned for wider experience, however,

and by age 18 his wanderlust held sway. He became a riverboat pilot and plied that trade for a few years, learning every bend and turn of the Mississippi River. The Civil War ended that career, and Sam drifted to the West, where he split his time between prospecting and journalism. Using the pseudonym Mark Twain – a river-piloting term – Sam eventually gained a nationwide reputation as a humorist.

Clemens put down stakes in New York State and Connecticut. In the 1870s and 1880s, he produced such classic books as Tom Sawyer, The Prince and the Pauper, Huckleberry Finn and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court. He became the centre of a literary universe, and visiting foreign dignitaries made a point of stopping at his home. Despite such success, he struggled with personal woes – including the death of a daughter and disastrous investments – and his later works became increasingly bitter.

He spent much of the 1890s living in Europe and with his financial problems finally set aright, he died in Connecticut in 1910. He remains one of America’s most-quoted writers.

Here are two of Mark Twain’s witticisms:

“If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you. This is the principal difference between a dog and a man.”

“It is curious – curious that physical courage should be so common in the world, and moral courage so rare.”

A man gave his identical twin brother a birthday gift of a bottle of wine on the day they share a birthday.

The next day he gave his identical twin brother a birthday gift of a bottle of gin and the brother gave him a gift, apologizing for it being a day late.

How can you explain this?

(Answer in next month’s Dovecot!)

TRAVEL: Cruising – the ultimate holiday experience (By Nikhil Gupta)

Top 10 benefits of taking a cruise this summer:1 A Cruise Vacation offers Great Value The cost of your cruise is all-inclusive. You pay once for

almost everything – accommodation, ocean transportation, meals, daily entertainment and more. All this from under US$ 100 per person, per night, which is much cheaper than you’d spend for a hotel, meals and a show. On many cruises, kids sail free or at heavily discounted rates.

2 Unpack only once ….and see the world! Get on board. Unpack. And travel from one exotic

destination to another. Every morning, you’ll wake up in a new place. Imagine being pampered at a luxurious resort and waking up each morning to a brand new, stunning view of the world.

3 Cruise Ships are Family Friendly From tots to teens, grandparents to grand kids, cruises are

fun for all ages. And there are cruises that cater to every vacation type.

4 Variety of Cruising options Take your pick from family friendly mega ships to intimate

boutique ships to river cruises and ice - strengthened expedition ships.

5 Variety of onboard activities Fill your days with activities or fill them with nothing. You can

pamper yourself at the spa while your companion hits the casino. Lounge by the pool. Watch a dance extravaganza. Go ice-skating or rock climbing. Practice yoga. Learn exotic cooking. Play video games. Do what you want, when you want.

6 Cruise for Cuisine Cruise liners generally offer 5 meals a day – breakfast,

lunch, evening snack, dinner and a midnight snack. And the spreads are lavish with a range of cuisines to tantalize your taste buds.

7 Cruise Vacations are easy to plan Pick your perfect itinerary, pick your cabin and leave the

rest to the travel agent.

8 Explore the world A cruise is one of the best ways to see the most exotic

destinations at a relaxed pace. Itineraries offer stops at major cities, beach towns and picturesque villages - destinations like Alaska, Europe, Antarctica and the Caribbean are best covered on a cruise.

9 Cruising is Social Cruising provides a wonderful opportunity to make new

friends. On board, you’ll meet people at your dinner table, at the piano bar or by the pool. Kids will also find playmates their own age during youth activities & in children play areas.

10 Cruising is Romantic There is an element of romance to sea travel. The wind in

your hair, the vistas of endless ocean, the stars twinkling above all set the mood for love – they maybe clichés, but they are real experiences onboard!

Secunderabad Club – Bangalore Club Annual Inter Club Tournament 2011 held at Bangalore Club

Sports

The members of the Secunderabad Club visiting Bangalore for the 31st Inter Club visit were received at the Cantonment Railway station early on the 11th morning by the General Committee members, the Secretary, Sports Sub-committee members, Captains of the teams and many team members. 5 ladies formed part of the 42 member team from Secunderabad.

Started in 1979 by Mr. Bhaktavatsala, the then President, the Inter Club visit is now an annual event with each club visiting the other in alternate years. The unbroken string of these exchange visits is the result of the warm relationship built up by the players over the years. Bangalore Club took the Championship Trophy, having won in all disciplines, this year. The visitors enjoyed the Retro music with the Club team and Committee members on Friday and the Valentine’s Dance on Saturday.

Here are some excerpts from a letter received from The Hon. Mr. Justice Charles Quin, Judge of the Grand Court in the Cayman Islands about the hospitality of our Club:

I am a long standing member of the Royal Overseas League in St. James London (No.7114912) and have been visiting India to attend the 17th Commonwealth Law Conference in Hyderabad. I took the opportunity to visit Bangalore……… I have been fortunate to stay at your wonderful Club from the 9th until the 14th February. I have had a most relaxing and enjoyable time, enjoyed the delicious food in the elegant dining hall, the quiet ambience of the Library, your superb swimming pool and well equipped gym. I arrived very tired and left feeling completely refreshed and rejuvenated! I was very well looked after by the staff and the housekeeping for my room was excellent. Mr. Reddy of the Library was very accommodating and in particular I would like to compliment Mr. Guruprasad, Mr. R. Shekar and Mrs. Radhika who were always so courteous and helpful……… The Cayman Islands unfortunately do not have a club like your lovely Bangalore Club, but if you ever find yourself there, please contact me. My card is enclosed.

With many thanks for a most enjoyable stay,

Yours sincerelySd/- Charles Quin

Feedback

Letter written by Mrs. Shelagh Foster Comments of the President of Secunderabad Club in our visitors book.

Titan Factory Visit

“ I personally found it a fascinating visit. It is a company that in many ways has adopted International standard practices and culture.

The talk was very interesting, the factory visit (in particular in the Tanishq Jewellery section) was very illuminating, and for the first time in my life I actually held Rs.1.2 Crores in my hand! (6kg Gold strip). The meal was very tasty, and the Transport bus very smooth, quiet and comfortable.

Vikram (Member and former VP at Titan) accompanied us and was a very articulate and knowledgeable companion. I also understand that the President had a personal hand in the arrangements and my thanks to him also.” - Murari Kaushik

Honorary Member’s Lunch:

“ Everyone has appreciated the wonderful opportunity to catchup with old associations, to share good food & company and the cordial atmosphere.” - Lalitha Ubhayakar

“ An Occasion worth attending and the food was better than all years!!, Thank you.” - M. Lasrado

“ Everything was perfect. The service, company and the warmth of the Committee. The food was the best in 5 years as an HLM.” - Y L Sajnani
